Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome to the first One Show of 20...

:00:22.:00:24.

Matt 'Bulls Eye' Baker and Alex 'The Bumpinator' Jones.

:00:25.:00:39.

How, everyone. Nice to see you. That is absolutely perfect.

:00:40.:00:51.

And Al, many will be surprised you're here for one more week rather

:00:52.:01:02.

This is the thing. You know what I am like. I thought, I will risk it

:01:03.:01:15.

all a biscuit. Whether we get to Friday, who knows? I have been doing

:01:16.:01:21.

a bit of lambing and I have the hand sanitiser.

:01:22.:01:25.

Darts announcer Little Richard is here because we're going to be

:01:26.:01:28.

meeting a surprising rising star of the darts world later.

:01:29.:01:30.

But now let's meet the first two guests of the year.

:01:31.:01:33.

Two men who don't have much in common.

:01:34.:01:36.

Whilst one lives a healthy lifestyle as a young man,

:01:37.:01:39.

the other has a history of behaving badly.

:01:40.:01:43.

Please welcome Tom Daley, and Martin Clunes!

:01:44.:01:48.

Welcome. You have a bit in your hair still. That is why I like you. He

:01:49.:02:02.

did not say anything. Happy New Year. Our U-boat? Very good. We are

:02:03.:02:14.

very good. We heard you had 17 for Christmas. -- how are you both? We

:02:15.:02:20.

ended up doing a ten kilograms turkey on the barbecue. Four and a

:02:21.:02:28.

half hours. We had herbs, butter and bacon on top. It was cooked right

:02:29.:02:33.

through. It was the most moist turkey you have tasted. The food

:02:34.:02:40.

looks amazing and your house. We like to think it can cook. Looks

:02:41.:02:46.

like you can. How did your Christmas dinner compared? Lovely, thank you.

:02:47.:02:53.

We had ten in the house. We were five short this year. There are

:02:54.:03:01.

usually 15. Is it right you are the meat monitor? My brother and sister

:03:02.:03:05.

in law bring the turkey each year but I was gravely monitor. Also

:03:06.:03:09.

running the farm, feeding the carols. Of course.

:03:10.:03:14.

Talking of barbecues, we're looking forward to hearing

:03:15.:03:17.

about your new series down under later on, Martin,

:03:18.:03:21.

make 2017 better for people. Having more time. Having less litter on the

:03:22.:03:43.

streets and people being more pleasant. That will improve my life

:03:44.:03:49.

immeasurably. What will help you improve your life in 2017? I think,

:03:50.:03:55.

personally, putting a smile on someone's is always the best way to

:03:56.:03:59.

go full if you can do that every debt, it would be great. If there is

:04:00.:04:05.

one thing I could wish for this year it is for people to not use their

:04:06.:04:10.

mobile phones while they are driving. I would like someone to

:04:11.:04:16.

approach me on the taxi rank and offer me some edges and Coffey for

:04:17.:04:26.

free. I would like ?5 million. That would help me buy a house probably

:04:27.:04:33.

set my own business. I would like to see young people get on the housing

:04:34.:04:36.

ladder much easier than what they can now. I would like to improve

:04:37.:04:44.

things for my health. Last year I had a slight stroke. What I would

:04:45.:04:48.

like to say is, it you just have to enjoy your life. I would like to see

:04:49.:04:56.

cheaper healthy food. Eat five a day. More days in the week and more

:04:57.:05:01.

hours in the day to spend time with my family and friends. One thing

:05:02.:05:05.

which would improve my life is a car that would drive me to work so I can

:05:06.:05:12.

nap on the way in. Don't throw your litter anywhere. Respect our

:05:13.:05:18.

country. We like it to look nice. It is hard to find a job because most

:05:19.:05:23.

jobs require experience, which I do not have. I think there should be

:05:24.:05:28.

more jobs available to young people. I would like to see more people

:05:29.:05:34.

enjoying the small things and not be self obsessed with technology and

:05:35.:05:36.

bumping in to people while looking at their phones. I would like a four

:05:37.:05:49.

day weekend. A four day weekend! APPLAUSE

:05:50.:05:50.

Oh, yes. On Wednesday we will be looking

:05:51.:06:05.

ahead at your hopes and dreams. Do you have any New Year's resolutions?

:06:06.:06:10.

So far to stop biting my nails. I have stopped biting but it does not

:06:11.:06:18.

stop me picking. We did kind of hope... I love the Olympic ring. I

:06:19.:06:24.

am going to cover them up. I am self-conscious about my nails. We

:06:25.:06:30.

were hoping you would say that. You have a look! This could help. With

:06:31.:06:35.

the nail bite stuff, you end up liking the taste of it. How about

:06:36.:06:41.

the hot sauce? The gloves will probably be the best. You can gaffer

:06:42.:06:47.

taped them to your wrists so they will not come upon your diving. This

:06:48.:06:52.

could be a handy thought. I think we are onto a winner will stop the stop

:06:53.:07:03.

biting nail kit box. Any resolutions, Martin? I have given up

:07:04.:07:11.

drinking till March. Good! My wife said, you say that every year. I

:07:12.:07:17.

said, do I question I will do it this time. So far so good? So far so

:07:18.:07:24.

good. You must give yourself a treat at the end of it. I have to get fit

:07:25.:07:30.

for Doc Martin. I must pass my medical as well. We will get onto

:07:31.:07:38.

that in a while Tom, let's talk about your book.

:07:39.:07:47.

You have got meditation. How did it all come about? At the beginning of

:07:48.:07:58.

the year, last year, I started doing some work-out videos on YouTube with

:07:59.:08:02.

fitness tips and things I do which helped me feel better which I

:08:03.:08:05.

thought might work for other people. The idea of the book happened and I

:08:06.:08:09.

did not know if I had enough to figure other than food and fitness.

:08:10.:08:14.

Ends like goal setting and helping you to sleep, I do ten minutes of

:08:15.:08:20.

meditation every morning. At the beginning I was really sceptical.

:08:21.:08:26.

Surely not. It has really helped me with my sport and going into

:08:27.:08:30.

competitions, being able to focus. I thought it was something that people

:08:31.:08:34.

could do, going to work were going to school, a job interview, having

:08:35.:08:41.

the right fuel in your body. You do that every day? Yes. Mental health

:08:42.:08:46.

is just as important as physical well-being. You say ten minutes of

:08:47.:08:52.

meditation, is that like hitting the snooze button? If you give yourself

:08:53.:08:57.

ten minutes every morning just to sit there, close your eyes, focus on

:08:58.:09:02.

your breath and being able to have that moment to set yourself up for

:09:03.:09:07.

the day. People will probably be listening and thinking, ten minutes

:09:08.:09:12.

of meditation. It can help you feel refreshed. If you get into stressful

:09:13.:09:20.

situations quickly can bring it back to that moment, knowing there is

:09:21.:09:23.

blue sky. There is always that area of peace. You have already told us

:09:24.:09:27.

about the turkey on the barbecue, which is fantastic. That is not in

:09:28.:09:33.

the book. What other menu treats are there? Food has always been a

:09:34.:09:37.

massive part of my life. If I am not diving and sleeping, food is there.

:09:38.:09:44.

From as long as I could remember, as a kid, at my grandmothers, we would

:09:45.:09:52.

always cook. Making cakes and then a pasta bake. That is in the book. I

:09:53.:09:57.

went to cookery school for six weeks. You have the qualifications.

:09:58.:10:04.

I am not a chef. I do not try to make things look really pretty but

:10:05.:10:09.

having the right balance of food are making it tasty and something you

:10:10.:10:14.

can maintain as well. Not just being on a diet, having it as a lifestyle

:10:15.:10:18.

are making sure you get variety. There are some lovely exercises and

:10:19.:10:24.

lovely recipes. Really simple stuff that people can have a go at. We

:10:25.:10:28.

thought might turn might like to have a go at some of these. Very

:10:29.:10:35.

straightforward. This is a knees up job. It is really hard to get a

:10:36.:10:43.

photo. I like that. Exercise number two. Talk us through this one. Just

:10:44.:10:49.

some warm up stretchers. Good. Very doable. This one is a very sexy

:10:50.:11:00.

pose. Oh, no. Don't tell me. There we go. How do you feel? I am going

:11:01.:11:10.

to bring out a fitness book. Love it. The book is very much out now.

:11:11.:11:17.

It is a great read. Tomorrow I will do my ten minutes when I wake up.

:11:18.:11:28.

Let's just say the culprits got what they deserved and there is such

:11:29.:11:35.

This shows dogs taunting a caged box. Moments later a terrier is put

:11:36.:11:43.

into the cage for a fight to the death. In 2015 I had a glimpse of

:11:44.:11:50.

this criminal underworld of dogfighting or badger baiting and

:11:51.:11:55.

animal cruelty. We filmed in network of people across the country who

:11:56.:12:00.

were using dogs to fight wild animals. The target of this raid had

:12:01.:12:07.

already scarpered but a search found medical skin staplers, it used to

:12:08.:12:14.

treat injured dogs. Basically, evidence of patching up animals.

:12:15.:12:20.

Potentially, yes. A second residential address and a shed used

:12:21.:12:25.

to kennel seven dogs, some with suspicious injuries. The search

:12:26.:12:32.

turned up lumping equipment for hunting animals at night and a DIY

:12:33.:12:40.

butchery. This knife has been used to cut up whatever has been caught.

:12:41.:12:49.

And then lots of meat. A man was later charged with animal cruelty

:12:50.:12:54.

offences. The dogs were left with RSPCA officers. What we found in

:12:55.:13:00.

that day's raids was just the beginning. Chief Inspector Ian

:13:01.:13:05.

Briggs from the special operations unit oversaw the investigation. The

:13:06.:13:10.

raids that took place uncovered a network of people involved in

:13:11.:13:16.

targeting wild animals with their dogs, for no legitimate reason than

:13:17.:13:24.

men like for killing things. The man who organised the illegal hunts and

:13:25.:13:30.

fights was Graham from Devon. When officers raided his property, they

:13:31.:13:35.

made a grim discovery. There remains of animals killed by his dogs. On

:13:36.:13:41.

his mobile phone, they found tens of thousands of images and videos.

:13:42.:13:48.

There were also text messages in which Coombs boasted his dogs have

:13:49.:13:54.

killed more than 1000 animals in six months. At the home of an associate

:13:55.:14:01.

of Coombs, dogs including these two were found locked up. The dog is

:14:02.:14:08.

going for veterinary examination now. The owner is charged with

:14:09.:14:13.

cruelty, keeping them in such poor conditions. After months of

:14:14.:14:18.

investigation, 11 men were sentenced for 27 fences. The judge described

:14:19.:14:26.

their crimes as bloodlust. In court, the ringleader, Coombs, was jailed

:14:27.:14:29.

for five months and banned from keeping dogs for life. These people

:14:30.:14:35.

will try to dress up their activities as lawful pest control

:14:36.:14:39.

and could not be further from the truth. They like to see their dogs

:14:40.:14:46.

killing things. It could be a badger, a fox or a pet dog. They are

:14:47.:14:50.

depraved, sick individuals. The dogs are well on the road to recovery,

:14:51.:14:57.

thanks to RSPCA officers like Marie Noble. All the dogs we have had were

:14:58.:15:04.

shut down to human attention. He has done really well. She is very

:15:05.:15:10.

trusting, one she has got to know someone. What are their chances of

:15:11.:15:14.

rehabilitation so they can be settled with a family? The chances

:15:15.:15:20.

are good. They will need experienced owners, kind and patient owners. We

:15:21.:15:25.

do not know if they have ever lived in a normal environment. They are at

:15:26.:15:29.

the point when they can forget the past and the horrid times they have

:15:30.:15:33.

had and look forward to the future. So, the new year is looking a whole

:15:34.:15:36.

lot brighter. And, it is never really the fault of

:15:37.:15:47.

the dog, they are trained to do it. It is not what they want to do, I

:15:48.:15:51.

cannot believe the mindset where they think they will do that with

:15:52.:15:54.

that animal when they have so much more to offer. Let's hope the

:15:55.:15:57.

five-month sentence in jail makes him think.

:15:58.:16:03.

It does not sound like a lot. Let's talk about your series about

:16:04.:16:09.

Australia, 8,000 islands, he knew that, and you visit 16 for this

:16:10.:16:14.

great documentary. It sounds like we have scrimped a bit! It would be a

:16:15.:16:19.

long and boring series if we did them all, we cherry pick. There are

:16:20.:16:23.

not many places we do not know about the Western world but people in

:16:24.:16:27.

Australia do not know about them. We did wonder whether they had the

:16:28.:16:31.

right man to do the job. Just because when Tom landed in Adelaide,

:16:32.:16:38.

this was the reaction he had. And then we saw your arrival and we

:16:39.:16:48.

wondered... Is he the right person? That Ireland, Norfolk Island, it was

:16:49.:16:52.

on the last day they put that up and there was screaming ladies at the

:16:53.:16:58.

airport. Nobody had any cameras! This is a

:16:59.:17:06.

taster of what we can expect. He is coming up for breath right

:17:07.:17:11.

here. Some are havens for wildlife.

:17:12.:17:16.

He is really nice! Others hiding places for humans.

:17:17.:17:21.

There are islands of unspeakable beauty.

:17:22.:17:25.

Look at that balloon! And those with a dark and savage past. Tom

:17:26.:17:31.

obviously is very much looking forward to diving in. Let's talk

:17:32.:17:38.

about the people you meet. Dave looks very similar to Father

:17:39.:17:42.

Christmas. What a man he is with his dingo! He is quite extraordinary and

:17:43.:17:49.

that is Polly and I wanted to steal her, I slept with her one night! She

:17:50.:17:54.

came on a boat and I was sleeping on the deck because it was so hot and

:17:55.:17:59.

humid with mosquitoes and she came and found me and we spent the night

:18:00.:18:05.

together. Dave lives on the island on his own, that is his only

:18:06.:18:09.

company. He lost a lot of money in the bus and he chose to isolate

:18:10.:18:14.

himself and lift that island dream. Which is tough. And going. Island

:18:15.:18:19.

people, they are interesting. I know a lot of Australians and I like them

:18:20.:18:24.

and the way they do things and I have spent a lot of time there and

:18:25.:18:28.

you see them on the islands and what they deal with, their tenacity.

:18:29.:18:32.

Everybody has three jobs and the sense of community. There is nowhere

:18:33.:18:38.

to hide! If you have a wow, you fix it, you cannot run away. Could you

:18:39.:18:45.

be an island? I sort of arm, I am here! I do love going to see them

:18:46.:18:56.

and for an English Australia, they want to talk about it and it is our

:18:57.:19:00.

history because we really disgraced ourselves. Making people build their

:19:01.:19:08.

own prisons. The indigenous people wrote boats and build their own

:19:09.:19:12.

prisons and putting them in. So Egypt, that history, you can touch

:19:13.:19:19.

it. But it is so Egypt. How was I think I'll stop everybody in

:19:20.:19:26.

Australia, it was dated. It's very interesting. The series is fantastic

:19:27.:19:33.

and the scenery is beautiful. And it was made for the Australian market

:19:34.:19:37.

and it was bought by British television. Yes, it was a

:19:38.:19:41.

co-production. On ITV next Tuesday. Is it? Yes. You are trying to get

:19:42.:19:52.

fit for Doc Martin. What can you say about the new series? What can you

:19:53.:20:00.

not so you will tell us what is happening? Last series, it fell

:20:01.:20:03.

apart early on. This is my marriage in it. We got back together and it

:20:04.:20:10.

looks like we would not exist as a cover. And we will try and live

:20:11.:20:16.

together. Possibly with a dog. Good! Thank you for that. And the baby

:20:17.:20:27.

that's never ages! Caroline never ages but I am like an old Turkey!

:20:28.:20:34.

Get the book. Ten years younger before you know it. You don't want

:20:35.:20:43.

mine on diving. "Diving, You might have noticed the new look here, the

:20:44.:20:52.

penguins and hippos have gone. We feature real people coming together

:20:53.:20:54.

across the UK. The first was this group of open

:20:55.:20:59.

water swimmers blaming -- braving the cold and Somerset which fits in

:21:00.:21:08.

with the next story. Told by British swimmer Keri-Anne Payne.

:21:09.:21:13.

The Bristol Channel, sparkling waters separating England from South

:21:14.:21:17.

Wales. Went on opposite shores by the England result of

:21:18.:21:22.

Weston-Super-Mare and the Welsh town of Penarth. On a clear day here, you

:21:23.:21:30.

get glimpses ten miles over that way and if you are a marathon swimmer

:21:31.:21:34.

like me, you might think, could I do that, could I make it across? But

:21:35.:21:39.

these troubled waters. Lethal coroner is and the second largest

:21:40.:21:43.

tidal range in the world Channel Hellas was up -- the Channel

:21:44.:21:51.

perilous. By 1927, every man who tried to swim it had failed and then

:21:52.:21:55.

news broke a girl was going to attempt it. 21-year-old Kathleen

:21:56.:22:01.

Thomas from Penarth. I am meeting her daughter and granddaughter. What

:22:02.:22:05.

an amazing scrapbook. So this is Kathleen Dawson top yes, this is her

:22:06.:22:13.

in her early 20s. Why did she take on this challenge? Because of her

:22:14.:22:20.

upbringing. As a small child, she was left in Penarth as her family

:22:21.:22:26.

emigrated to Canada and she was sick and was left behind. She did not

:22:27.:22:31.

have children of her own so her and she kept her and adopted her. She

:22:32.:22:36.

was brought up by a strict anti-. She used her to clean the house and

:22:37.:22:42.

do all that. Like a Cinderella type story. That's possibly pushed her

:22:43.:22:47.

more and more down that road. She had the fight in her to go out on

:22:48.:22:52.

top will stop Kathleen was a strong swimmer but the Bristol Channel was

:22:53.:22:56.

thought to be impossible, especially for a girl. Women were considered

:22:57.:23:01.

inferior to men and still were fighting for the vote. Undeterred,

:23:02.:23:06.

she took to the water on September five. Today, we are retracing her

:23:07.:23:12.

route. It must have been dark at 4:50 a.m.. Yes, scary. How she knew

:23:13.:23:19.

which way to go, I do not know! Uncle Jack was feeding her beauty

:23:20.:23:23.

and water to sustain her! We can see she has a swimming hat and goggles

:23:24.:23:27.

and no wet suit! I do not know they were invented. She got stuck in a

:23:28.:23:35.

whirlpool. For about one hour. She was being pulled down and she found

:23:36.:23:38.

the only way to cope was to be really still. Halfway across, the

:23:39.:23:44.

current across the island are infamous and to find out what

:23:45.:23:47.

Kathleen was up against, I am going in. Here goes! I am scared! No going

:23:48.:23:51.

back now! Not at all! Doing this has made it more real.

:23:52.:24:07.

Four, it was what we were told was not it is a really amazing

:24:08.:24:11.

experience. Because one can understand it better. It is thank

:24:12.:24:18.

God it is not me! This current is pushing me every which way and by

:24:19.:24:24.

the time the Kathleen would have got between these islands, she would

:24:25.:24:30.

have been swimming for hours. Her body temperature would be

:24:31.:24:32.

plummeting. The strength and determination to push past the

:24:33.:24:37.

psychological barrier is incredible. Especially as a woman in the 1920s,

:24:38.:24:43.

with everybody expecting her to fail. What an incredible woman!

:24:44.:24:48.

After seven hours and 20 minutes, Kathleen made history when she

:24:49.:24:53.

walked the shore at Weston-Super-Mare, the first person

:24:54.:24:57.

to swim the Bristol Channel. This is where she finally landed, over here

:24:58.:25:02.

in England. The crowds on the pier and on the beach. How does it make

:25:03.:25:08.

you feel to be here now? Incredible. Really proud. Women were trying to

:25:09.:25:12.

prove they could do as well as men and they were equal and this was

:25:13.:25:16.

something really significant she had achieved. Now a hero, job offers

:25:17.:25:22.

poured in and even a chance to be a synchronised swimmer in Hollywood,

:25:23.:25:25.

but Kathleen found happiness as a swimming teacher.

:25:26.:25:30.

I have so much respect for Kathleen Thomas, not only a pioneering

:25:31.:25:33.

athlete of her time but clearly a strong woman who was not afraid to

swim against the tide. Unbelievable!

:25:40.:25:43.

What a woman, Kathleen! That was a lovely film. Well done to

:25:44.:25:53.

those who had a swim yesterday! F, Tom? No way!

:25:54.:25:56.

With the PDO World Darts Championships final tonight

:25:57.:25:58.

and the Lakeside World Darts Championships

:25:59.:26:00.

we thought we'd swap a diving board for a darts board and see how

:26:01.:26:04.

Little Richard, the rules of the game! This is the three. The

:26:05.:26:19.

challenge on The One Show! It is going to be Martin Doc Martin.

:26:20.:26:33.

Game on! Nine. Trouble 12. Nice grouping.

:26:34.:26:46.

25 scored. Our next player is Tom triple twist, double top daily.

:26:47.:26:58.

45 to beat. Five. 17. 14. That is 36. Rubbish!

:26:59.:27:05.

What are we are going to do? I think we need to add a bit of

:27:06.:27:09.

professionalism to the mix. Little Richard, can you introduce

:27:10.:27:11.

our next contender, please? Ladies and gentlemen, we now

:27:12.:27:19.

introduced the brightest young star of darts, twice a Masters finalist,

:27:20.:27:26.

the reigning European cup doubles champion, it is bow and arrow, it is

:27:27.:27:38.

Beau Greaves! Beau, you have 45 to beat by Doc

:27:39.:27:45.

Martin, game on! One. 90. Session 90. And 13, tried

:27:46.:28:01.

the treble and our champion is Doc Martin!

:28:02.:28:08.

Come on round, my dear! Things did not go so well for you there but you

:28:09.:28:15.

have had a glittering career. You are 12 years old which is absolutely

:28:16.:28:25.

incredible. This is with Michael van Gerwen who is in the final tonight.

:28:26.:28:29.

Is it like to play against world-class players at the age of

:28:30.:28:34.

12? And want to beat them but it is great experience and I enjoy it.

:28:35.:28:38.

Tom, you are interested in the training. For diving, it is not just

:28:39.:28:43.

in the swimming pool, do you just throw darts every day, what time do

:28:44.:28:49.

you do? Obviously, I practice but I like to watch people and just to see

:28:50.:28:57.

what their technique is not copy but it in to make me better. Yes. We

:28:58.:29:07.

have your mum Tracy, it is one thing to practise but most competitions

:29:08.:29:12.

would happen in a pub. Is it weird to take your daughter who was ten

:29:13.:29:17.

when she started to compete against these men, where he welcomed as a

:29:18.:29:21.

family, how did you deal with that? I hated taking her to the pub

:29:22.:29:25.

because people did pass comment. She just went and played the game and

:29:26.:29:29.

came away so she did not stay all night. A packet of crisps and a

:29:30.:29:38.

drink! Guess! Very quickly, but it into context what it is like to see

:29:39.:29:43.

Beau playing? The biggest compliment she gets is from the top lady

:29:44.:29:48.

professionals and she has reached a senior ranking final already so she

:29:49.:29:52.

is being called a future World Champion, no pressure, Beau! Thank

:29:53.:29:55.

you so much indeed. Thanks to Tom and Martin

:29:56.:29:58.

for joining us. Tomorrow, we'll be back

:29:59.:30:03.

with "Silent Witness" stars

:30:04.:30:06.
