Hello and welcome to the show. The Oscars might have given us the best

:00:17.:00:27.

selfie ever, but our guest tonight is not afraid of posting an online

:00:28.:00:32.

selfie or two with a wide range of emotions. Very wide! Here it is the

:00:33.:00:40.

manic selfie. Here is the bad boy banana selfie. And here is the very,

:00:41.:00:48.

very bored-on-a-plane one. Please welcome the man him selfie, John

:00:49.:00:55.

Barrowman! That is the Easter selfie. That goes everywhere with

:00:56.:01:03.

me, on the plane. It has travelled all over, every place I have been.

:01:04.:01:17.

Easter, I love you! This apparently has been retweeted about 3 million

:01:18.:01:23.

times, this selfie from the Oscars. When are you going to get all of

:01:24.:01:28.

those people in one picture, ever? He is really handsome in the front,

:01:29.:01:32.

isn't he? The one in the white suit, I am talking about. Listen, that is

:01:33.:01:40.

of course 12 people crowded into one selfie, but can anybody at home beat

:01:41.:01:46.

that number? If you can, then send your selfie to us and we will show

:01:47.:01:51.

them later on. Now, it is of course Pancake Day, you have probably had

:01:52.:01:57.

yours already. John, have you had yours? Negative I haven't. I have

:01:58.:02:06.

not had one at all today. But my favourite pancakes, I loved Scotch

:02:07.:02:11.

pancakes, my Gran used to make them home-made, and when we went to her

:02:12.:02:15.

is on a Sunday, we used to have done with a little bit of butter on, a

:02:16.:02:19.

bit of strawberry jam, it is the best thing to take with T. We know

:02:20.:02:25.

this, don't we? You have not had your pancakes tonight, but here we

:02:26.:02:29.

are, let's bring in the Scotch pancakes! Just how you would like

:02:30.:02:38.

them to be. They are glorious. He delivered them without a smile! Just

:02:39.:02:45.

enjoy the pancakes. That is exactly as I would want them. Is that

:02:46.:02:53.

cream?! He is a very talented man, our pancake maker. We have got

:02:54.:02:57.

another little treat later as well. Yes, we are full of surprises. Thank

:02:58.:03:02.

you very much. I am really busy, you carry on. I think we could all agree

:03:03.:03:07.

that there is nothing lower than a conman who preys on the elderly. But

:03:08.:03:11.

thankfully, the ones that we are about to see kindly provided the

:03:12.:03:15.

police with all of the evidence they needed to put them behind bars. As

:03:16.:03:20.

Anita rani has discovered, these guys were not the Wolves of Wall

:03:21.:03:24.

Street. More like the slimy swindlers of Swansea. They do not

:03:25.:03:29.

get much lower than this. These crooks thought it was acceptable to

:03:30.:03:32.

scam the elderly out of hundreds of thousands of pounds by pretending to

:03:33.:03:40.

work for Sky. A gang of 14 from Swansea bullied people into buying

:03:41.:03:43.

bogus insurance policies for a sky TV box. And what brought them down?

:03:44.:03:48.

They were full mission after record themselves doing it.

:03:49.:04:02.

Rhys Harris was the lead investigator for trading standards,

:04:03.:04:07.

and those recorded calls helped him crack the case. But you get on a

:04:08.:04:12.

phone call is the attitude, and the way that they were speaking to the

:04:13.:04:15.

consumer. They said on their phone calls, it was for training and

:04:16.:04:21.

quality purposes, but how they would use those calls for training, I do

:04:22.:04:27.

not know. 1-10, on levels of idiocy, where would you put this one? For

:04:28.:04:34.

recording their calls, ten! Val was one of 7000 customers from across

:04:35.:04:37.

the UK to be duped into buying one of those fake insurance policies. I

:04:38.:04:42.

picked up the phone one morning and this gentleman said he was from Sky

:04:43.:04:47.

and he was saying I needed to renew my insurance. One of the recordings

:04:48.:04:52.

discovered by trading standards was hers. Hello, I am calling regarding

:04:53.:04:58.

your Sky television. Firstly... He was so sneaky by naming three

:04:59.:05:19.

digits and making you think that he had your bank details, when he had

:05:20.:05:24.

nothing whatsoever. I was sick in my stomach. The fact that I was so

:05:25.:05:29.

gullible, I just went and got it. I think my generation comes from a

:05:30.:05:32.

different era, where we trust. Perhaps you have not got to trust

:05:33.:05:37.

quite so much. The main men behind the cold calling companies were

:05:38.:05:47.

these three. There are staff ruthlessly targeted old and

:05:48.:05:52.

vulnerable customers. One elderly victim was sold four annual policies

:05:53.:05:58.

in just two weeks. After a lengthy investigation, police and trading

:05:59.:06:02.

standards officers raided the Swansea headquarters of the company,

:06:03.:06:05.

seizing computers and arresting staff. The gang leader watched on in

:06:06.:06:10.

handcuffs as his crooked business was dismantled. Our forensic expert

:06:11.:06:18.

was able to send us a big computer hard drive with more than 100,000

:06:19.:06:22.

calls on. It was a painstaking process but it was worth it in the

:06:23.:06:27.

end. How important were those phone calls as evidence in this case

:06:28.:06:33.

crucial they were crucial. Also it put in context how they were

:06:34.:06:36.

speaking to them, how they bullied the consumers. Three weeks ago,

:06:37.:06:41.

eight of the gang were sent to prison for a total of 22 years, and

:06:42.:06:45.

six call centre staff, the people making the cold calls, also got

:06:46.:06:50.

suspended prison sentences. The judge said the calls were chilling,

:06:51.:06:54.

and he wanted to send out a message that any business conning people

:06:55.:06:58.

over the phone could expect substantial prison sentences. They

:06:59.:07:03.

got what they had coming to them. Really, it is good that they have,

:07:04.:07:08.

because, why should they get away with it? Why should they have our

:07:09.:07:14.

money under false pretences? We heard some horrendous cases there.

:07:15.:07:20.

That is not even the worst of it. There was one old woman, her husband

:07:21.:07:24.

had just had a heart attack, she was waiting for the ambulance to arrive,

:07:25.:07:28.

and they were so persistent, they made her give them her bank details

:07:29.:07:33.

over the phone. It is disgusting. It is just incredible, these people.

:07:34.:07:39.

You cannot help but feel sorry for Val. She said she felt silly for

:07:40.:07:42.

trusting these people, but how can you tell these people are who they

:07:43.:07:46.

say they are? This is the advice from Action Fraud, which is that if

:07:47.:07:52.

somebody is trying to get you to give your bank details on the spot,

:07:53.:07:56.

do not do it, and you are perfectly within your rights just to hang up

:07:57.:08:00.

the phone. 7000 people were affected, any chance of them getting

:08:01.:08:04.

their money back? Well, 7000 people, Val got ?80 taken off her,

:08:05.:08:11.

that adds up to more than half ?1 million. Swansea trading standards

:08:12.:08:16.

are trying to get that money back, first of all to find out where it

:08:17.:08:20.

is. They have not found it yet. Until they find out, there is no

:08:21.:08:24.

real chance of compensation. But they say that anybody who thinks

:08:25.:08:27.

they might have been a victim of that scam, get in touch with

:08:28.:08:34.

citizens at the. Also, you can go to our website. -- Citizens Advice

:08:35.:08:43.

Bureau. Is it right that you were wrapped up in some kind of scam

:08:44.:08:49.

years ago? Yes, when I was starting out and money was like it is for

:08:50.:08:53.

everybody at the moment, exceptionally tight, somebody took

:08:54.:08:57.

one of my cheque-books, copied it, started forging my signature, and I

:08:58.:09:03.

lost about ?30,000. Did you get it back? I did, but I had more

:09:04.:09:06.

difficulty proving that I was me, and they want. That was just at the

:09:07.:09:15.

beginning of identity theft. But the people out there who prey on

:09:16.:09:19.

pensioners and older people, they are just disgusting. They are the

:09:20.:09:22.

scum of the earth. It is just getting so difficult. You heard Val

:09:23.:09:28.

saying that she was sick to the stomach, but people are so clever,

:09:29.:09:33.

and that is what is awful. And so convincing. You have just got to be

:09:34.:09:37.

on your guard, and do not be afraid to put the phone down. Do not ever

:09:38.:09:42.

give your numbers out, never. For the last few weeks, John has been

:09:43.:09:46.

putting the nation's canines to the test, to find one worthy of the

:09:47.:09:51.

title page of it. Tomorrow, it is the last of the semifinals of. Here

:09:52.:09:56.

is John, trying to get a word in edge ways. Here we go. Today, we

:09:57.:10:02.

have got another persuasive technique. And what is that? To try

:10:03.:10:10.

and exchange like for like. And here is where it went wrong before. Is he

:10:11.:10:16.

going to get that ball back? That is the big bastion. What is he on a

:10:17.:10:19.

hiding to nothing?! It does not look good with the clock ticking away.

:10:20.:10:26.

Ground dog day for John. Coco has picked it up again! Dave is watching

:10:27.:10:28.

on. Finally he has got it in! Superstar Dogs: Countdown to Crufts

:10:29.:10:43.

is on at the moment. What makes a superstar dog? It is not really what

:10:44.:10:47.

makes the superstar dog, but what makes the superstar team. The dog

:10:48.:10:52.

and the owner. The dog becomes the superstar, but a lot of the time,

:10:53.:10:57.

you find that the owners are the ones who actually fail the dog,

:10:58.:11:01.

rather than the dog failing the owner. It shows about their bond,

:11:02.:11:05.

how they work together, how they have fun together, and also the

:11:06.:11:08.

trust that they have been each other. I am a dog lover, I have my

:11:09.:11:12.

own dogs, but it was very revealing to do this programme, and to see how

:11:13.:11:17.

they interact with each other, the dogs and the owners, together. You

:11:18.:11:22.

are eagerly awaiting the final. Yes, we are. But I think the winner of

:11:23.:11:28.

this evening's programme, which has already gone out, was Smurf and

:11:29.:11:33.

Sarah, and then tomorrow, they go head to head with two other couples.

:11:34.:11:41.

Which ones are the dogs and which ones are the owners?! You cannot

:11:42.:11:46.

tell, sometimes, that is what I love about it! Someone will come in with

:11:47.:11:51.

a dog, and I did One Show, and I called the owner by the dog's name

:11:52.:11:58.

and vice versa! They do say you can become similar to your dog. Yes, our

:11:59.:12:05.

dog, Scott and I, our dogs would not... Our Jack Russell would go in

:12:06.:12:13.

the water. That is them. They read and everything? They do, they read

:12:14.:12:18.

my books. Jack would jump in the water but he would not return the

:12:19.:12:21.

ball to me. And the other one would just sit in the floor and go, I am

:12:22.:12:26.

not doing this. One of them is like Scott, and one of them is like me.

:12:27.:12:30.

We are quite surprised that you went to work with animals again, because

:12:31.:12:35.

you had a really bad incident with a pantomime horse, didn't you? It was

:12:36.:12:39.

not a pantomime, as in, guys in a costume. It was a real horse. I did

:12:40.:12:47.

a whole number with a horse, and I had signs that I'd hate to get it to

:12:48.:12:53.

do things. I was riding it on stage, and all of a sudden it felt a bit

:12:54.:12:58.

jumpy, and the next thing, I was 25 feet up in the air, thinking, this

:12:59.:13:02.

is not right, and I landed on my lower back on the stage. I jumped

:13:03.:13:06.

up, finished the number, did the stuff with the horse, and then I

:13:07.:13:10.

stood up and felt dizzy, and told the audience, I have got to go and

:13:11.:13:14.

deal with this. Please do not be upset, because I do not want the

:13:15.:13:18.

horse getting upset. I went off and collapsed on the side of the stage,

:13:19.:13:24.

and that was it. As I collapsed, my cousin's son, who was my understudy,

:13:25.:13:30.

was, like, right, costume! And all the kids were going, look, money, he

:13:31.:13:37.

can fly! No wires! But I must say, it was not the fault of the horse.

:13:38.:13:41.

Those of us who know animals, it got spooked by something which was very

:13:42.:13:45.

different on that show. Back to the dogs, you can see that on Channel 4

:13:46.:13:49.

at 5.30pm every day until Thursday. And since we last saw you, we have

:13:50.:13:54.

to say congratulations, because you got married, in California. That is

:13:55.:13:59.

the lovely ring, yes. It was the day after they passed same-sex marriage,

:14:00.:14:04.

in July. It was, and we made a decision that we were going to do

:14:05.:14:09.

it. We already had a civil partnership, which we did in Wales.

:14:10.:14:12.

We decided we were going to go and get married right away, because we

:14:13.:14:16.

should be doing it, if we love each other, and also, we should... People

:14:17.:14:23.

say, is it any different? It is not, in the sense that we are still the

:14:24.:14:26.

same people, but the difference is that now we have the same rights as

:14:27.:14:31.

anybody else, and we cannot begin I'd things. If anything, God

:14:32.:14:34.

forbid, would happen to Scott, I do not have to go through a legal issue

:14:35.:14:42.

to deal with things, or vice versa. -- we cannot be denied things. We

:14:43.:14:51.

have got some treats for you. Your treats always worry me, but as long

:14:52.:14:55.

as they have got some cream on them, and some jam... It could be

:14:56.:15:00.

connected! Anyway, last year, we gave One Show viewers the chance to

:15:01.:15:07.

plan their very old garden. And the results were so blooming marvellous,

:15:08.:15:11.

we are doing it all again this year. Here is Christine, with the details.

:15:12.:15:19.

The Hampton Court Palace flower show, a riot of innovative garden

:15:20.:15:23.

design. One of the highlights from last year was this, The One Show

:15:24.:15:24.

garden. It was created by Vicki, who won our

:15:25.:15:38.

competition to create a family garden. I would love to go on and do

:15:39.:15:45.

more gardens as a professional gardener but to do that at Hampton

:15:46.:15:50.

Court was unheard of so I was honoured to have done it. Today we

:15:51.:15:58.

are launching a new competition. Once again the prize is the chance

:15:59.:16:04.

to design a show garden. This year we have made it even more of a

:16:05.:16:12.

challenge. This plot is twice the size of Vicky's, 12 metres by 12

:16:13.:16:18.

metres, more space and more opportunities to be really creative.

:16:19.:16:23.

We want you to design a garden that celebrate the area where you live,

:16:24.:16:28.

the place, the people, the history. It is entirely up to you. This is

:16:29.:16:34.

the size of the plot as you have got to play with. All you need to do is

:16:35.:16:41.

get your thinking caps on. Send us your design and one of you will have

:16:42.:16:46.

your garden created for real at Hampton Court. You will have a team

:16:47.:16:56.

of professional landscapers and Andy is one of our judges. What are you

:16:57.:17:06.

looking for? Passion, inspiration, just people to capture the essence

:17:07.:17:11.

of what is around them. Do you need to be an expert gardener to pull

:17:12.:17:18.

this off? No, the competition is aimed at amateurs so we just want to

:17:19.:17:22.

see passion on a page, someone really wants to have a go. Last year

:17:23.:17:29.

we were shocked by the quality of entries. You will need to come up

:17:30.:17:36.

with two drawings, one being planned from above, the other from the

:17:37.:17:42.

front. You can draw it by hand or on the computer. How do you transfer

:17:43.:17:48.

that plot outside onto a piece of paper? You have just got to choose a

:17:49.:17:54.

scale, I think the best one is 50-1. That means in reality that two

:17:55.:18:01.

centimetres equals one metre on the ground. You need to create a strong

:18:02.:18:08.

breeze and story, you want a visitor to turn up and get what you are

:18:09.:18:15.

trying to do. Morecambe Bay, sparkling sea, rugged landscapes,

:18:16.:18:22.

how do I get that on there? One of the biggest mistakes people make

:18:23.:18:25.

when they first start designing is that they have 20 ideas and they try

:18:26.:18:30.

to put them all on one piece of paper. As long as you have got a

:18:31.:18:36.

strong story, this is a vehicle to get your garden built. Bring it to

:18:37.:18:45.

Hampton Court and tell that story. The judges will need to know what

:18:46.:18:48.

plants you want to use in your design and what landscaping you are

:18:49.:18:54.

planning. We will need your entries by noon of March the 24th. After

:18:55.:19:00.

that amateur gardeners will compete for the grand prize, the opportunity

:19:01.:19:08.

to be at Hampton Court, showing their own garden alongside the

:19:09.:19:12.

professionals'. You can find all of the details about how to enter on

:19:13.:19:14.

our website. It is very exciting, and Christine

:19:15.:19:30.

is here now with Diarmuid Gavin. We will get to your wonderful designs

:19:31.:19:35.

shortly, but first, on a planned theme, how can you get your idea

:19:36.:19:45.

about the sea through? You think about Sherwood Forest, you think

:19:46.:19:55.

about what plants you could use to bring the garden to life. So going

:19:56.:20:02.

local is better than going for something impressive? It needs to be

:20:03.:20:10.

sparkling and house razzmatazz. Speaking of which! You are known for

:20:11.:20:15.

your amazing gardens. Where do you start? With an idea. Define what you

:20:16.:20:23.

want to say and bring some magic. It might be that my favourite movie is

:20:24.:20:30.

Willy Wonka And The Chocolate Factory, so we created a garden this

:20:31.:20:35.

that flooded in Chelsea couple of years ago but it refines right

:20:36.:20:43.

through the years so a good idea and really try to stay through to the

:20:44.:20:56.

essence you do not live in Willy Wonka And The Chocolate Factory so

:20:57.:21:01.

how do you create a garden where you do live? I live in the hills of

:21:02.:21:07.

Whitlow, very to Scotland, and Wales. I think 40 shades of green, I

:21:08.:21:17.

would have natural stone, moss coloured rocks, something really

:21:18.:21:26.

trying to instil passion into it. Just to reiterate, the entrance

:21:27.:21:35.

cannot go this creative, can they? There are restrictions, no higher

:21:36.:21:41.

than two metres in height, no sound effects... What about little Gavins

:21:42.:21:53.

who want to break the rules? We have had one entry that was created in

:21:54.:21:59.

the green room five minutes before the programme. I like manicure odd

:22:00.:22:10.

things. It is upside down. It is representative of things in my life

:22:11.:22:18.

at the moment so we have Superstar Dogs, and we have pressured

:22:19.:22:22.

parlance, then you can come over here and get some arrow in your

:22:23.:22:31.

life. So we are looking for a top view, a front view, and how do

:22:32.:22:38.

people get those designs here? Through the post, through the web,

:22:39.:22:44.

and they need to be here by March the 24th. Now for some lost history.

:22:45.:22:54.

Aircraft carriers and warships are still being built at the shipyards

:22:55.:22:57.

in Glasgow, but most of the iconic cranes that have towered above the

:22:58.:23:01.

Clyde for decades are coming down. To mark their passing, the One Show

:23:02.:23:04.

commissioned a very special epitaph from Glaswegian poet Donny O'Rourke.

:23:05.:23:08.

Here it is, brought to life by the people of Glasgow. To me, they are

:23:09.:23:23.

like a zoo, a playground to wander through, a mechanical dream come

:23:24.:23:26.

true. Memory Lanes, lined with cranes. He

:23:27.:24:00.

won us two world wars. Like the bones of a dinosaur, extinct

:24:01.:24:06.

remains, no more cranes. With each heavy load they bore, they could

:24:07.:24:12.

make our spirits soar, but they will raise morale no more. Commerce

:24:13.:24:23.

gains, we lose our cranes. With a panoramic view of what

:24:24.:24:31.

skilled workers used to do, there is a museum too...

:24:32.:24:53.

In the setting sun, the Clyde still read, ideas are dead, hope sustains

:24:54.:25:10.

outlast the cranes. As the junkyard giants stoop and their mighty

:25:11.:25:18.

shoulders droop, the latest loss cannot re-coop. The last time I lay

:25:19.:25:30.

my eyes on the city's steel Horizon that the sun will never rise on, I

:25:31.:25:38.

will miss the cranes. When there is a huge hole in the sky about 100

:25:39.:25:45.

metres high, we will ask the silent River Wye Glasgow maintains only

:25:46.:25:55.

memorials to cranes. Do you remember those cranes? I did

:25:56.:26:04.

pantomime up their every year, just across from the cranes, and a member

:26:05.:26:15.

of my family used to work in those yards. I talk about Scotland and my

:26:16.:26:21.

accent goes again, someone will give me grief about it! Last time you

:26:22.:26:26.

were on the show, we spoke about long lost friends and this is what

:26:27.:26:33.

you said. There is someone I used to hang out with, his name was Scott

:26:34.:26:39.

Donald. He was younger than I was, but I remember him having blonde

:26:40.:26:42.

hair. Do you remember the man who brought

:26:43.:26:56.

in the pancakes? You are joking! Have a seat. We said to him

:26:57.:27:10.

initially, when you come in, put your head down. When is the last

:27:11.:27:18.

time you saw each other? I was nine years old because we were just about

:27:19.:27:27.

to move. That is in your house because I remember dancing with your

:27:28.:27:34.

mother in the kitchen to Save Your Kisses For Me and that is my last

:27:35.:27:40.

memory because we moved that summer. Your mum and dad still? My

:27:41.:27:50.

dad has passed away. But your mum is still around? Send her my regards. I

:27:51.:27:59.

remember that moment, Save Your Kisses For Me, and I also remember

:28:00.:28:10.

on the sofa laughing like drains about that song, all of a sudden.

:28:11.:28:20.

Laughing like drains to that. Get your camera and take a selfie. Where

:28:21.:28:31.

were you? I live in Winchester now. Your mum still in Scotland? Yes.

:28:32.:28:39.

Keep a little bit quiet because we are going to show these, this is

:28:40.:28:47.

Hayley Allen with the Aqua girls. This is Gary's gang from Whitby, ten

:28:48.:28:55.

of them all together. This is, will and the guys from Cruz 118. That is

:28:56.:29:05.

all for tonight. Thanks to John and Scott. Tomorrow we will be joined by

:29:06.:29:12.

the irrepressible Ruby Wax. You guys have a great catch up.
