Hello and welcome to The One Show, live from Cardiff! APPLAUSE | :00:55. | :01:00.
And a very big thank you to Only Boys Aloud. They are great. | :01:00. | :01:08.
Now, then, at 6.30am, the Team Rickshaw started its epic journey | :01:08. | :01:14.
from Swansea to Cardiff, 53 miles. They have faced winds, rain, | :01:14. | :01:18.
massive hills, it has not been easy, but shortly they are riding in | :01:18. | :01:22.
through that gate over there at the entrance of the castle. To welcome | :01:23. | :01:27.
them tonight, a guest who is to make this city his home for the | :01:27. | :01:34.
next few months, it is Joe Pasquale! How are you, Joe? I have | :01:34. | :01:37.
the sniffles it is so cold. I know. | :01:37. | :01:46.
This is Wales, mind. You have the Eskimo boots and coat | :01:46. | :01:51.
I know. Now, what do you think of the challenge? I can't believe they | :01:51. | :01:56.
have done the 59 miles. In that weather, you know what the hills | :01:56. | :02:00.
are like. It is like erest here. It is tough. Do you think you could | :02:00. | :02:06.
take on a challenge like that? not on my own. It would take me a | :02:06. | :02:09.
week. I think they will get to London before Friday. | :02:09. | :02:14.
It will be tough. They will definitely get there by London it | :02:14. | :02:18.
has been a tough time, though. Here is the story so far. | :02:18. | :02:24.
Early on Saturday morning, they kick off the second day of the | :02:24. | :02:26.
rickshaw challenge. The scenery is outstanding. | :02:26. | :02:32.
This is different, isn't it? Yes, there is hardly any green where I | :02:32. | :02:36.
live it is all concrete. Would you come here again? Maybe | :02:36. | :02:43.
not on a rickshaw! But, Jamilla begins to suffer with cramps, it | :02:43. | :02:47.
means an unscheduled stop for her to recover. | :02:47. | :02:53.
Stop for a leg stretch. Lift one leg up like that. You are doing | :02:53. | :03:00.
brilliantly. Ten or 15 minutes. But she recovers and hands over to | :03:00. | :03:02.
Darren. It is nice to have the support from | :03:02. | :03:08.
the public. To know that they are behind us. That is spurring us on. | :03:08. | :03:15.
If you have not given money, why not?! The route was to cycle over | :03:15. | :03:22.
50 miles a day, up to Swansea to finish on Monday night in Cardiff. | :03:22. | :03:29.
We are travelling through the most br breathtaking landscape. It is | :03:29. | :03:34.
looks gorgeous, but it is bad news on the thighs. This morning Jamilla | :03:34. | :03:39.
did a great job, now Darren is on the saddle. Nice and gentle on the | :03:39. | :03:45.
legs. Turn slowly. That is great. Can you feel the burn? Yeah! Good | :03:45. | :03:49.
boy. Soon, even with Darren in high spirits, it all becomes a little | :03:49. | :03:52.
too much. How much do we have to go? A little | :03:52. | :03:57.
bit of a hill, but there are four people behind you, pushing! OK? Do | :03:57. | :04:06.
you want me to sing to you? # Take me home, country roads. # | :04:06. | :04:10.
Anyone got earplugs. The support from the public was | :04:10. | :04:13.
amazing. It gave James a bounce in his step. | :04:13. | :04:20.
Right, turn the legs! All right, come on. Check it out. Look at | :04:20. | :04:26.
this! Special delivery for the rain-maker. You can't beat dancing | :04:26. | :04:32.
in the rain! The rains soon came. So did the night. With a the first | :04:32. | :04:37.
major landmark reached. You have the honour of taking Team | :04:37. | :04:44.
Rickshaw over the 100 mile mark! There you go! Wow! Keep your hands | :04:44. | :04:49.
on the handle bars! That's it. We have had a few upsets within Team | :04:49. | :04:54.
Rickshaw. We have had injuries. A lot of tiredness. Jamilla has gone | :04:54. | :05:00.
into spasm. She has been with the physio. She cannot start. Team | :05:00. | :05:03.
Rickshaw has gone from six riders to seven.. We are bringing in | :05:03. | :05:08.
Shannon. Morning, lads! Feel happy, Shannon? | :05:08. | :05:12.
Yep. Good! That is the first hill for | :05:12. | :05:18.
Shannon. Then I thought it was about time that I showed my support. | :05:18. | :05:22.
Thank you, ladies, it is much appreciated. | :05:22. | :05:30.
The got the team to drop by my aunt and uncle's house for refreshments. | :05:30. | :05:34.
Then, Team Rickshaw were soon back to strength. | :05:34. | :05:40.
Feeling more confident? Yes. Before that was a lot for me. I was crying | :05:40. | :05:47.
after it. Not of pain, of overwhelm ing feelings. I have never felt | :05:47. | :05:52.
that before. What did it feel like? You know when you were a wee kid | :05:52. | :06:02.
:06:02. | :06:07. | ||
and you felt so good in yourself, like, with riding a bike? Yes? | :06:07. | :06:17.
:06:17. | :06:21. | ||
Go Team GB! Go Team GB! -- go Teem Rickshaw! Indeed, go Teem Rickshaw. | :06:21. | :06:25.
Tonight Ciaran is finishing today's leg riding in that gate. So I am | :06:25. | :06:33.
joined by Sam, Ciaran's mother, Danny, Ciaran's brother and | :06:33. | :06:36.
Ciaran's headteacher. As a family can you believe what Ciaran has | :06:36. | :06:42.
been able to achieve over the last four days? No, but I should not be | :06:42. | :06:48.
a -- in such surprise, he has always been a fighter, but he has | :06:48. | :06:53.
passed all expectations again. It has been hugely emotional, we | :06:53. | :06:58.
had a cry in the Singleton Hospital earlier on? Yes, we met the nurses | :06:58. | :07:02.
who nursed Ciaran 17 years ago when he was born. I have not seen them | :07:02. | :07:06.
for 17 years. That was hugely emotional. | :07:06. | :07:11.
What do you make of this, Danny? is great, unbelievable. | :07:11. | :07:15.
Did you know that yaur brother could do this from the word -- that | :07:15. | :07:21.
your brother could do this from the word go? I had a feeling, but he | :07:21. | :07:25.
has been brave. Well, I have a feeling that the | :07:25. | :07:29.
riders are coming over that bridge. Everybody, give them a huge round | :07:29. | :07:37.
of applause, please. Come on, Ciaran! Ciaran! Ciaran! | :07:37. | :07:41.
Yes! Here he is. Now, how does it feel to see your | :07:42. | :07:48.
boy coming over that bridge with a Welsh flag around his neck? I have | :07:48. | :07:52.
goose pimples all over me. I am shaking. It is like a dream. It is | :07:52. | :07:56.
unreal. It is absolutely amazing. I want to | :07:56. | :08:06.
run to him. Well, we can! We can go over! | :08:06. | :08:16.
:08:16. | :08:25. | ||
Ciaran... Go on. Go on, get in there. | :08:25. | :08:31.
Do you want to get off, Ciaran? Is that what you want to do? You get | :08:31. | :08:37.
off. Let me help you with those legs. My word, Teem Rickshaw, | :08:37. | :08:44.
gather around. Jack you are on this side, you | :08:44. | :08:48.
started it off this morning. Now there were a lot of roundabouts and | :08:48. | :08:53.
a lot of traffic coming out of Swansea? Yes, there was it was | :08:53. | :08:58.
tricky. Traffic on either side. for two days you got up early and | :08:58. | :09:01.
you cycled for how long? 14 miles each morning. | :09:01. | :09:08.
Then you had the rest of the day off? Yes! He has it good here, | :09:08. | :09:14.
hasn't he, Darren? Yeah! We are don day four. We have four days to go. | :09:14. | :09:23.
All we have to do is do what you have already done?! Yep! Ciaran, | :09:23. | :09:32.
you did the last six to seven miles? Yes. | :09:32. | :09:37.
It is great here in Cardiff. It is a really good feeling. We are | :09:38. | :09:46.
halfway there already. It has flown by. Thank you to all of these guys. | :09:46. | :09:51.
I tell you what, our super six riders have certainly done their | :09:52. | :09:55.
bit. Here is how you at home can help. | :09:55. | :10:01.
To show your support it really is simple, all you have to do is text | :10:01. | :10:11.
:10:11. | :10:26. | ||
Brilliant! Sit yourself down. Hello, Darren! Hello! How has today | :10:26. | :10:31.
been for you? A little hard with some of the hills, but I got there. | :10:31. | :10:35.
I did it. Now we hear, Darren, that Joe here | :10:35. | :10:41.
has taken a shine to you? Oh,? is my favourite. He has done so | :10:42. | :10:45.
well. He looks great in the ears, don't | :10:46. | :10:52.
you think? I didn't know they were not real! Put them on him! You are | :10:52. | :10:58.
going to make Cardiff your home for the next few months? Yes, I am | :10:58. | :11:02.
doing panto n at the New Theatre. We are starting on December 8th to | :11:02. | :11:09.
January 20th. You are going to come? So we start | :11:09. | :11:14.
on December 8th to January 20th. We are throwing everything out. Flying | :11:14. | :11:20.
motorbikes. It flies over the audience. I am in it. Lucy Evans is | :11:20. | :11:26.
on it. It is a great show. Have you got lots of fancy bits and | :11:26. | :11:31.
pieces? Yes, and a little built of Lycra. | :11:31. | :11:37.
Do you like that? I do, but do you like panto, Darren? I have seen | :11:37. | :11:43.
bits and pieces when I was little with my mum and dad. | :11:43. | :11:48.
I suppose, the audiences these days are quite sophisticated, but panto | :11:48. | :11:55.
is a traditional format, does it still work? You do, but there is | :11:56. | :12:01.
the new technology. There is everything thrown at you. The worst | :12:01. | :12:06.
thing about doing the 3D stuff, for the audience it looks great, but on | :12:06. | :12:13.
stage, you feel sick. You have the 3D glasses on, you do two | :12:13. | :12:18.
performances a day, by the end, you go fruit loop on it. | :12:18. | :12:23.
But for me there is no entertainment like it. The | :12:23. | :12:27.
beautiful sketches, the timing. has been going hundreds of years, | :12:27. | :12:31.
panto. It is a great British tradition. The amount of times you | :12:31. | :12:38.
rehearse it, you think it will not work, but then you get on the | :12:38. | :12:43.
theatre, then for some reason the magic happens. | :12:43. | :12:50.
I presume you are heavily involved in the script? We they let me play | :12:50. | :12:54.
with the script. Sometimes I throw it out of the window and I will | :12:54. | :13:00.
talk about him for ten minutes. Well not many people know this, but | :13:00. | :13:06.
as well as being a tremendous bike rider, Matt was also in panto? | :13:06. | :13:14.
have done panto? Yes, I loved it. Are you doing one this year? | :13:14. | :13:20.
don't have time. I love the feedback from the | :13:20. | :13:24.
audience. A lot of people knock panto, but it is the first time | :13:24. | :13:28.
that kids get to see live theatre. Everyone has a video. | :13:28. | :13:32.
I took my kids to theatre after they had been to panto, then they | :13:32. | :13:40.
started Shadow Shouting in the middle of the real theatre. It was | :13:40. | :13:46.
lovely. And in the New Year a new bird -- a | :13:46. | :13:51.
little bird tells us you are skating on ice? I don't know. It | :13:51. | :13:58.
depends on whether or not it snows. Well, there is a brailt crowd in | :13:58. | :14:03.
Cardiff -- brilliant crowd in Cardiff, isn't there? It looks like | :14:03. | :14:13.
:14:13. | :14:14. | ||
Hogwarts here. We were expecting our guest to turn | :14:14. | :14:20.
up. But he doesn't seem to be here. Do you know where he might be? | :14:20. | :14:30.
:14:30. | :14:36. | ||
Come on, take the head off. It's Mike Dilger! You two know each | :14:36. | :14:40.
other quite well, they have taken a dip together. | :14:40. | :14:44.
Ever since he was a teenager, squeaky voiced comedian Joe | :14:44. | :14:50.
Pasquale has had a love of rock. But not the music kind. I always | :14:50. | :14:55.
wanted to be a geologist when I was a kid. But I got run over when I | :14:55. | :14:57.
was 13 and I missed a year of school. I didn't get any O-levels. | :14:58. | :15:04.
I got one in metalwork and one in biology, so I could weld a frog | :15:04. | :15:08.
together and that was about it. So I've spent 25 years telling jokes | :15:08. | :15:13.
on the road. I wasted so much time, so I started a degree in geo- | :15:13. | :15:18.
science and geology. Three years into his studies, his passion has | :15:18. | :15:24.
also kick-started a love of biology. I had no interest in anything in | :15:24. | :15:27.
terms of science and allies started my course. The first year was a | :15:27. | :15:37.
:15:37. | :15:37. | ||
foundation year, I had to do biology, chemistry, astronomy. Then | :15:37. | :15:43.
you realise how many species there are. I went to Florida once and | :15:43. | :15:46.
touched a dolphin. That was nice. I'm looking forward to seeing | :15:46. | :15:50.
something British. We have come to the Isles of Scilly, home to one of | :15:50. | :15:55.
our biggest and most graceful aquatic mammals. First, a geology | :15:55. | :16:00.
lesson about the islands. Scilly Isles were formed about 300 | :16:00. | :16:06.
million years ago, through platonic intrusion. It's a load of magma | :16:06. | :16:12.
coming through the rock. It is a lava that has not come to the | :16:12. | :16:16.
surface. It's the same thing, it is just under ground. I didn't know | :16:16. | :16:20.
that, for starters. But what I do know is that the Eastern Isles of | :16:20. | :16:27.
Scilly are wear grey seals like to hang out. If you are lucky, they | :16:27. | :16:32.
will let you swim with them. There are two! Three! They are really | :16:33. | :16:37.
curious. These are all females. Looking forward to getting into the | :16:37. | :16:42.
water with them? Where are the male seals? The females are more | :16:42. | :16:49.
sociable. Are they the first ones you have seen? Yes, unless it is at | :16:49. | :16:54.
the zoo. There are some do's and don'ts before you can swim with | :16:54. | :16:59.
them. First, they don't like eye- contact. They tend to swim away | :16:59. | :17:04.
quite quickly. If you look slightly past them, or down on them, you can | :17:04. | :17:08.
often get closer. The other thing is that they have very good hearing | :17:08. | :17:12.
and they don't like high pitched, squeaking noises. What am I doing | :17:12. | :17:22.
:17:22. | :17:31. | ||
here? I'll have to start sounding They have sensitive whiskers to | :17:31. | :17:35.
pick up movements from swimming fish. And they are curious, which | :17:35. | :17:45.
:17:45. | :17:46. | ||
is probably why they are coming to They are all around us, mate. | :17:46. | :17:53.
were suing at your flipper. You see how they use their tail to propel | :17:53. | :17:58.
themselves? They are so beautiful, effortless in the water. Unlike me | :17:58. | :18:08.
:18:08. | :18:11. | ||
They hand out at sea for up to five days at a time. -- hunt. They can | :18:11. | :18:14.
dive down to 70 metres and they can stay underwater for around 12 | :18:14. | :18:19.
minutes to catch fish for dinner. Then they will return to land for a | :18:19. | :18:26.
day to rest and digest. I've seen nothing like it. I have seen it on | :18:26. | :18:30.
television, I grew up with Jack Christow. It was actually | :18:30. | :18:40.
:18:40. | :18:46. | ||
phenomenal, to get that close. Look at the pair of them. Romance! | :18:46. | :18:52.
Did you bring your wet suit? I have it on under here! It must have been | :18:52. | :18:57.
amazing to see them? I couldn't believe the size of them, 8, 9, 10 | :18:57. | :19:04.
foot tall. When he is suing at your feet, you are like, go away! | :19:04. | :19:09.
couldn't get him out of the water. This will come as a surprise, that | :19:09. | :19:14.
you are so into geology? I'm doing a degree in geo-science. I didn't | :19:14. | :19:24.
:19:24. | :19:26. | ||
get any exams in school. All I got was Grade four German. All I can | :19:26. | :19:31.
say is, have you got the new Gilbert Dan Sullivan CD? Do you | :19:31. | :19:41.
:19:41. | :19:51. | ||
think that we should mention that James has a little at all? -- owl. | :19:51. | :19:55.
It's very difficult to work out which gender they are. They need to | :19:55. | :19:59.
fly Hawks, to keep the pigeons away, so they don't poo all over the | :19:59. | :20:08.
place. From a geological point of view, this is very interesting? | :20:08. | :20:13.
can go to town! There has been a castle here for hundreds of years, | :20:13. | :20:17.
starting with the Romans in 50 a day. They brought back some | :20:17. | :20:27.
limestone, from the Vale of Glamorgan, and if we go back to the | :20:27. | :20:33.
1500s, we've got the lovely motte. A wonderful structure. They even | :20:33. | :20:43.
:20:43. | :20:44. | ||
got a bear on it! The Victorian era, they added to it. And look what | :20:44. | :20:54.
:20:54. | :20:57. | ||
they're made from Carboniferous What do you think of the castle? | :20:57. | :21:02.
You are new to Cardiff, aren't you? Yes, well, it is pretty fancy, | :21:02. | :21:10.
actually. Pretty fancy? 2000 years of history, pretty fancy! This is a | :21:10. | :21:17.
lovely image, with him and more hand. -- on your hand. How does it | :21:17. | :21:22.
compare to the rickshaw ride? different. You have a lizard at | :21:22. | :21:27.
home? Yes, a little lizard. things you can talk about when you | :21:27. | :21:33.
have hours of cycling. There are a lot of animals in here as well. | :21:33. | :21:38.
From day one, really. The Romans used to have a love of exotic | :21:38. | :21:44.
animals. 2000 years ago, Lyons, possibly even elephants, monkeys, | :21:44. | :21:48.
parrots, the whole works. You think of the gladiator, the Coliseum, | :21:49. | :21:53.
they loved their animals there. In the Middle Ages, the nobility were | :21:53. | :21:59.
hunting. They would have had horses, dogs and hounds. Also, the Falcons. | :21:59. | :22:03.
That is why Falcons are still flying around, to keep the pigeons | :22:03. | :22:08.
away. Lord Bute loved his wild life so much, the motte behind, it used | :22:08. | :22:13.
to have beavers introduced. Unfortunately, they have long since | :22:14. | :22:18.
gone and they are extinct in Britain. But we still have Falcons, | :22:18. | :22:26.
thanks to the Hawkins couple that You've got to get to bed, tomorrow | :22:26. | :22:33.
we are up early. Do you know what time it is? 6:30am! We are all set | :22:33. | :22:37.
and ready to go for a day five. Over the next week, you are going | :22:37. | :22:42.
to learn a lot about our individual riders. What a bunch they are. | :22:42. | :22:48.
Tonight, it is Lauren and Ciaran's turn, whose parents are also on the | :22:48. | :22:56.
road, looking on anxiously. I can do it! I am the flying | :22:56. | :23:01.
Scotswoman! I can do what I can for Children In Need. I was run over by | :23:01. | :23:05.
a car a few years ago. When we got her home, she was just sat in the | :23:05. | :23:09.
wheelchair. She could not support her head, she had a strap across | :23:09. | :23:14.
her forehead. I haven't ridden my bike since my accident. It's been | :23:14. | :23:19.
very slowly, one step at a time, but always pushing forwards. Two | :23:19. | :23:24.
and-a-half days, already, her mindset has totally flipped. It has | :23:24. | :23:29.
went from I cannot, to I can. night, she was really tearful. She | :23:30. | :23:34.
said she was really proud of me. She has just been good support, | :23:34. | :23:44.
:23:44. | :23:46. | ||
telling me I can do it. How was that Hill? I cannot feel my arms! | :23:46. | :23:56.
:23:56. | :24:00. | ||
I feel really proud of myself. Just how much I've been able to do. | :24:00. | :24:05.
Ciaran's co-ordination is not very good. He hasn't got a great deal of | :24:05. | :24:10.
strength, so he really goes through the barrier. He is determined. My | :24:10. | :24:17.
dad has helped me through some tough times. I don't think I could | :24:17. | :24:22.
have done it without him. Knowing that I am tired, knowing that I | :24:22. | :24:27.
need to stop, knowing when I can't do any more, it is great to have | :24:27. | :24:33.
him here. I think we are gaining strength from Ciaran. He gives | :24:33. | :24:37.
people around him inspiration. He wants to raise money as well, an | :24:37. | :24:41.
awareness for other children that have any disabilities. That brings | :24:41. | :24:51.
:24:51. | :25:00. | ||
Like we said before, we are only halfway. What a four days it has | :25:00. | :25:05.
been already. They are certainly doing their part, you can help by | :25:05. | :25:15.
texting the word TEAM. You don't have to even get off the sofa. That | :25:15. | :25:21.
will cost you 5, plus the standard network charge, but the whole 5 | :25:21. | :25:25.
goes to Children In Need. Do ask the bill payers permission first. | :25:25. | :25:29.
If you want the full terms and conditions, go on to the website. | :25:29. | :25:34.
As simple as that! Now, where our Team Rickshaw? We had a total to | :25:34. | :25:44.
:25:44. | :25:44. | ||
Help Darren in, if it's a little bit dark. Here we go, the total is, | :25:44. | :25:54.
:25:54. | :26:07. | ||
so far... Some kind of drum roll! And it's only Monday! Superb! As we | :26:07. | :26:12.
said earlier, a long day for them tomorrow. We are going all the way | :26:12. | :26:17.
from Cardiff, starting at 6:30am. Set your alarm if you want to come | :26:17. | :26:21.
down and support them. John Bishop will be there, in Bath, turning on | :26:22. | :26:26.
the Christmas lights. That will be lovely. Will we talked to some | :26:26. | :26:30.
people that are doing something for Children In Need? A lot of people | :26:30. | :26:35.
are. Where it is a pedal power? What have you been doing? This is | :26:35. | :26:41.
civil, and I am from Cardiff pedal power. We have a group of young | :26:41. | :26:47.
people that also cycle. We have a physio, supported by Children In | :26:47. | :26:51.
Need, Gabriela. She gets these people started. They have cerebral | :26:51. | :26:57.
palsy, learning disabilities, autism, anything. They start at two | :26:57. | :27:01.
and-a-half. We have James that has been with us for four or five years. | :27:01. | :27:05.
He's still cycling and he's going into adult cycling. This is the | :27:05. | :27:09.
great thing, they can do it right through to adulthood. Also, as part | :27:09. | :27:16.
of a family. It's really great. James, as she was saying, you | :27:16. | :27:22.
suffer from terrible palsy, as does Ciaran. He must have been a huge | :27:22. | :27:30.
inspiration? Yes, I think pedal power is good. You go round the | :27:30. | :27:38.
track, you know that you have a good time. I think this is a good | :27:38. | :27:48.
:27:48. | :27:48. | ||
place. Thank you, James. Yes it is. I am with these top lads here. Tack | :27:48. | :27:57.
wells, yes? -- tap Wells. You have raised 156. What have you been | :27:57. | :28:02.
doing? We had buckets and we have been going around asking for money | :28:02. | :28:08.
for Children In Need. Raffles. you win anything good? Wales tops, | :28:08. | :28:13.
everything. And we have the choir around here, somewhere. What have | :28:13. | :28:23.
:28:23. | :28:23. | ||
you been doing? We have been... Singing? Yes! That was a good guess. | :28:23. | :28:28.
A bigger event going on on Friday, at the Malta. Arena. Singing with | :28:28. | :28:34.
children from South Wales. Excellent, or go a long. I think we | :28:34. | :28:42.
should have more music. We have Only Boys Aloud. Take it away, with | :28:42. | :28:52.
:28:52. | :28:54. | ||
# Never forget where you've come here from | :28:54. | :28:57.
# Never pretend that it's all real # Someday soon this will all be | :28:57. | :29:06. |
