to form a new Government and I accepted. Together, we will build

:00:17.:00:28.

Denise Day has decided to put her house up for auction following the

:00:29.:11:39.

floods in December last year. She is fed up and she wants out. Who would

:11:40.:11:45.

want to live here? Not you anymore. Not me. Denise is one of a number of

:11:46.:11:50.

people in Carlisle going to the auction rooms, after money from the

:11:51.:11:56.

insurance company made it possible. Instead of existing homeowners

:11:57.:11:58.

waiting while the contract is repaired properties, they are giving

:11:59.:12:02.

them lump sums, so Denise and others like her, can choose to take the

:12:03.:12:08.

money and move on. But is selling at auction a financial risk? What price

:12:09.:12:11.

do you have to sell it for to avoid losing money? We bought it for 140

:12:12.:12:17.

53 years ago and the insurance gave us 40. You need 105 to break even?

:12:18.:12:24.

We have it on at 175 star Price. Even if you stay and do the house up

:12:25.:12:28.

we will not sell it for what we bought it for, so I just want rid.

:12:29.:12:32.

When she bought this three bed terraced Denise believed the ?38

:12:33.:12:36.

million improvements of Carlisle's flood defences in 2010 meant her

:12:37.:12:41.

home was safe. It was only a week before the Flood and I had said, it

:12:42.:12:46.

would flood, we got the barriers. We were still naively believing, even

:12:47.:12:52.

on the night I was adamant that ours would hold and it was my partner who

:12:53.:13:00.

said, we best start getting things upstairs. Everyone said the Flood is

:13:01.:13:06.

just the beginning. Dealing with the insurance, and the thought of coming

:13:07.:13:10.

back in is a nightmare. Absolutely awful. This has broke me completely.

:13:11.:13:18.

We will find out what price Denise gets for her house at auction a

:13:19.:13:21.

little later. Alison Taylor works for a charity

:13:22.:13:26.

that houses vulnerable people. They bought a house that was damaged in

:13:27.:13:32.

the floods last year. She paid just ?132,000 at auction for this five

:13:33.:13:37.

bedroom town house. That's 110,000 less than its pre-flood value.

:13:38.:13:43.

Some people would say you're crazy, Alison, for buying a house in an

:13:44.:13:46.

area which is notorious for flooding.

:13:47.:13:49.

To be honest, we would not have been able to buy a house like this

:13:50.:13:52.

anywhere else in the city and we think it is a risk worth taking.

:13:53.:13:56.

Do you not feel there is a slightly predatory element to that? That you

:13:57.:14:01.

have benefited from someone else's misfortune?

:14:02.:14:04.

Yes, in some cases I do feel that is not very nice for the people if they

:14:05.:14:08.

have lost out, but from what I'm hearing people have not lost out.

:14:09.:14:11.

The auctions of these flood damaged homes have been conducted by Colin

:14:12.:14:15.

West. Who are the winners and losers in all of

:14:16.:14:20.

I would argue that it is a win - win. The vendor has the flexibility

:14:21.:14:24.

to sell as is now in the auction combined with the sediment from the

:14:25.:14:27.

insurance company and the buyer is buying a property at a price he'd

:14:28.:14:31.

never have been able to buy it at before, do it up and hopefully

:14:32.:14:34.

prices will recover, or he does it up and rents it out but it depends

:14:35.:14:38.

on the prices achieved at auction and tomorrow it will tell. Colin

:14:39.:14:43.

also says the Flood read scheme set by the government and insurers to

:14:44.:14:46.

keep insurance affordable for those in high flood risk areas has helped

:14:47.:14:50.

encourage buyers looking to bag a bargain at auction. But it doesn't

:14:51.:14:55.

help everyone. Buy-to-lets and business properties are not

:14:56.:15:00.

eligible. It is D-Day for Denise and she needs her home to raise at least

:15:01.:15:06.

105,000 at auction to break even. Well, Denise, the auction is filling

:15:07.:15:10.

up, how do you feel? Nervous, very nervous.

:15:11.:15:13.

What about the worst-case scenario, it doesn't sell at all?

:15:14.:15:18.

We will have two refurbish it and redo everything and move back in and

:15:19.:15:22.

live with the threat of more flooding.

:15:23.:15:26.

That's the last thing you want. The last thing I want.

:15:27.:15:30.

The auction gets underway and three other flood damaged homes are sold

:15:31.:15:33.

for around 50% of the pre-flood value.

:15:34.:15:37.

Time for Denise's property. Here we go. 64, 68, 70, 75, all

:15:38.:15:42.

done. It's not great news for Denise, as

:15:43.:15:54.

her three bed is sold for the reserve price of just ?75,000.

:15:55.:15:58.

I'm really sorry for you, where does that leave you?

:15:59.:16:04.

It leaves us with a ?30,000 loss, so it leaves as renegotiating our

:16:05.:16:07.

mortgage, looking at smaller properties, but I'm still pleased we

:16:08.:16:12.

sold and we are out of the Flood area.

:16:13.:16:14.

Denise is looking to the future and has already booked into macro

:16:15.:16:17.

viewings in Carlisle, nowhere near the Flood risk zones. And for those

:16:18.:16:22.

who have taken advantage of buying cheap at the auctions, let's hope

:16:23.:16:26.

they stay dry with the storms coming knocking once again.

:16:27.:16:31.

It goes without saying we wish Denise and her family the best. Very

:16:32.:16:35.

disappointing result. Greg, man down is back on our

:16:36.:16:43.

screens shortly. At the end of the last series is golf and moved to

:16:44.:16:48.

America and Dan was living with his mother and his auntie.

:16:49.:17:06.

I've left him with his mum and his auntie and his mum has a new

:17:07.:17:23.

boyfriend, that is one of the things that is upsetting him. You think it

:17:24.:17:31.

can't get any worse. This was the first series I started to feel sorry

:17:32.:17:41.

for him. Look at this! He has a terrible life. He has a terrible

:17:42.:17:49.

time, he's just about to get attacked by a fox! There it is! It

:17:50.:17:56.

was a real fox! Do things get any better? Does he make any inroads to

:17:57.:18:01.

becoming an adult? For the first time he attempts to change so he

:18:02.:18:05.

does make decisions. As you can imagine, things get horrendously

:18:06.:18:08.

worse but at least he has a go at escaping. It moves on more this

:18:09.:18:10.

series and I'm excited about who's in it. You have got some Hollywood

:18:11.:18:13.

A-lister is. Everybody we asked, Tony Robinson we couldn't believe

:18:14.:18:15.

said yes and Steven Berkoff plays the school caretaker which is

:18:16.:18:17.

ludicrous! While we are talking about him, here he is. You been

:18:18.:18:28.

Serbia? It is a place of great pain! I can never return. It's my family.

:18:29.:18:38.

Lovely. All dead. I like you. How many years have you taken? How old

:18:39.:18:47.

am I? 45. Come on, pretty boy, how many? 65. LAUGHTER

:18:48.:19:02.

He is very good. That is not me having to act being frightened. And

:19:03.:19:07.

Mark Hamill as well! It is ridiculous. Luke Skywalker himself.

:19:08.:19:17.

That is not a still from Man Down! As the writer, you are sitting there

:19:18.:19:21.

watching these A-lister is deliver your lines, that must be quite an

:19:22.:19:27.

experience. It was really exciting. With Steven I was more worried! But

:19:28.:19:33.

so exciting because I studied Steven Berkoff when I was at university.

:19:34.:19:38.

Would you say doing, I would rather say you -- you say it like this? I

:19:39.:19:45.

said, whatever you want to do! But he was so naturally frightening! And

:19:46.:19:49.

that is based on a real caretaker at one of my schools who once pinned me

:19:50.:19:56.

in the corner and said, you think the headmaster runs this school, I

:19:57.:20:01.

run this school! And now he has Steven Berkoff playing him. Even in

:20:02.:20:06.

the local paper, they saw you and your mum going out for a meal and it

:20:07.:20:10.

made the local paper. It was the Shropshire Star. There you are.

:20:11.:20:22.

Great headline! Spotted in town. And they interviewed the waitress. I had

:20:23.:20:27.

forgotten about that but they did, they are lovely people at the

:20:28.:20:31.

Shropshire Star and they are always good are very kind to me but there

:20:32.:20:35.

was a great quote from the waitress, he seemed nice, he had pasta! Both

:20:36.:20:38.

are true. Man Down is on tonight

:20:39.:20:48.

at 10pm on Channel 4. Later tonight on BBC One there's

:20:49.:20:50.

a new series called Saving Lives at Sea looking at the work

:20:51.:20:53.

of the RNLI volunteers and the extreme situations

:20:54.:20:55.

they find themselves in. Here's a crew from Blackpool who get

:20:56.:20:57.

into trouble themselves whilst Helmsman Darren has not resurfaced.

:20:58.:21:37.

But in danger of being knocked unconscious by the upturned boat,

:21:38.:21:41.

there is little that crewmates Simon and Kyle can do to help him.

:21:42.:21:49.

Thankfully, Darren, who was under the boat, and the prison if he is

:21:50.:21:57.

here. APPLAUSE What was that like? How long were

:21:58.:22:01.

you underfoot? About one minute and ten seconds. And did you lose

:22:02.:22:07.

consciousness? Not at all. You could see the red flare being set of and

:22:08.:22:12.

Shaun who is alongside Elissa and Lindi, Shaun, you saw the flare but

:22:13.:22:18.

it is very rare for crew members to tip them off. Extremely rare, I had

:22:19.:22:24.

been a light but man for 20 years and a volunteer helmsman for nearly

:22:25.:22:28.

15 and I have never seen a flare fired by an actual crew. -- lifeboat

:22:29.:22:38.

man. Were you close by? We were searching just north of where Darren

:22:39.:22:42.

capsized and we had to go and rescue them so it was quite daunting. And

:22:43.:22:47.

it was a false alarm? Unfortunately, yes. Elissa, what spurred you on,

:22:48.:22:54.

you are in Abersoch, what spurred you do volunteer? I came from a

:22:55.:23:00.

sailing family and at 18 I decided I wanted to do something I could not

:23:01.:23:04.

afford to donate so what is more valuable than your time? Are there

:23:05.:23:10.

many females signed up? Not at my station, I am the only one but there

:23:11.:23:13.

are others with loads, Aberystwyth have a full female crew and in

:23:14.:23:20.

others it is more common. What is your day job? I am an employment

:23:21.:23:26.

list. I'm a train driver. What happened if the call comes and you

:23:27.:23:32.

are working? We work on a roster system at the station so people

:23:33.:23:36.

cover for when I'm at work. We have a a pretty big team. Lindi, we

:23:37.:23:43.

mentioned that you were rescued. We have some footage filmed by the crew

:23:44.:23:47.

of your rescue. What happened in Blackpool? I'm not quite sure how I

:23:48.:23:54.

ended up in the water, I was in a bad place at that time in my life

:23:55.:24:00.

and in my mind. I just went into the water and felt comfortable in that

:24:01.:24:04.

and I didn't want to get out. The crew came and they rescued me and

:24:05.:24:10.

they told me to get in the boat. I didn't want to but they took me to

:24:11.:24:15.

shore. I get it hard to put into words but what would you like to say

:24:16.:24:18.

to these people who put their lives on the line to rescue yours? I'm

:24:19.:24:24.

really grateful and thank you. I didn't realise they were volunteers

:24:25.:24:28.

and they had other jobs as well. They are risking their lives every

:24:29.:24:34.

day to save total strangers so I'm really grateful. To put it into

:24:35.:24:39.

perspective last year the RNLI rescued 8000 people, saving 348

:24:40.:24:44.

lives and in the last 48 hours there have been called in Cleethorpes,

:24:45.:24:52.

Brighton, Enniskillen, just a few and there are a lot more. If it what

:24:53.:24:58.

you had an incident, Greg? Did you get rescued? Not by the RNLI. I got

:24:59.:25:07.

in trouble when I was boogie boarding in Cornwall and an

:25:08.:25:11.

Australian lifeguard came out on a canoe. I was clinging on to a cliff

:25:12.:25:15.

and I thought he was going to rescue me and he just went, stop messing

:25:16.:25:21.

around! He left me! I wish you guys had been there! Elissa, you met your

:25:22.:25:30.

fiance by joining. Is he here? Yes, he is in the audience. Where is he?

:25:31.:25:37.

This is Fritz. We understand there is some kind of assessment process

:25:38.:25:43.

going on and he is your instructor. He is the senior helm on station so

:25:44.:25:49.

he is technically involved. Is he tough on you? He is a nightmare, he

:25:50.:25:53.

is so horrible! Why are you horrible? I'm not really. You are

:25:54.:26:02.

getting married in September? Yes. And it can take over your whole

:26:03.:26:06.

life, I guess that is the point for the people employing you, they have

:26:07.:26:10.

to understand that for you and everybody here, it takes over your

:26:11.:26:16.

life. It does. You ask my wife, she will tell you I'm at the boathouse

:26:17.:26:21.

more than at home or if not, at work. You have to have an

:26:22.:26:25.

understanding family, the kids know that you could drop everything leave

:26:26.:26:29.

at the dinner table, the Nativity, shopping, that's a good one! And it

:26:30.:26:34.

happened last Sunday? I had been out on the boat to welcome a new boat at

:26:35.:26:41.

the flanking stations, I was about an hour late, I walked in, we were

:26:42.:26:46.

going for lunch, we sat down in the restaurant and the pager went off so

:26:47.:26:49.

we didn't eat for another hour and a half. But she understands, she gets

:26:50.:26:56.

used to it after 20 years! And you are doing a fantastic thing by

:26:57.:27:02.

volunteering. And Fiona, later this summer, you are doing some voting?

:27:03.:27:05.

Not in the same category obviously! I'm hoping to get my daytime skipper

:27:06.:27:12.

license so you can sail in daylight hours. I started trying to learn the

:27:13.:27:17.

navigational charts yesterday and nearly had a nervous breakdown! But

:27:18.:27:21.

I want to say, we are so grateful for all that you do. We love our

:27:22.:27:25.

coastline and going out and enjoying the seat and knowing that you guys

:27:26.:27:30.

do what you do and that you choose to do it, we are hugely grateful --

:27:31.:27:35.

enjoy the seaside. And to get there so quickly, to risk everything, you

:27:36.:27:40.

must get an enormous amount out of it when you do the rescues. We do.

:27:41.:27:46.

There is no a greater buzz than knowing you are helping someone the.

:27:47.:27:51.

It is a great feeling knowing you have rescued someone. Thank you all

:27:52.:27:55.

for everything you do. APPLAUSE Saving Lives at Sea is on tonight

:27:56.:28:00.

at 9pm on BBC One and for more information on the BBC's

:28:01.:28:04.
