Hello, and Welcome to The One Show,
with Matt Baker... | 0:00:18 | 0:00:20
And Angela Scanlon. | 0:00:20 | 0:00:22
Today is Blue Monday - some say
the most miserable day of the year. | 0:00:22 | 0:00:27
Well, not this year it's not. | 0:00:27 | 0:00:29
Who could watch this and not feel
an irrational surge of happiness? | 0:00:29 | 0:00:35
This is good, look at this! Magical
stuff! Oh, yes! | 0:00:35 | 0:00:43
This is what happens when pet cats
watch Big Cats on BBC One. | 0:00:43 | 0:00:48
Plenty more from them later. | 0:00:48 | 0:00:49
And topical comedian
Matt Forde's here. | 0:00:49 | 0:00:53
What's it like when you see things
like Spitting Image, or | 0:00:53 | 0:01:00
impersonation is on TV, they have
picked up the mannerisms what... | 0:01:00 | 0:01:09
He'll be putting his spin on 2018. | 0:01:09 | 0:01:10
Our sofa guests tonight

which is appropriate! | 0:01:12 | 0:01:14
It's Emilia Fox and Liz Carr! | 0:01:14 | 0:01:15
APPLAUSE. | 0:01:15 | 0:01:21
Louw to you both. -- hello to you
both. | 0:01:21 | 0:01:27 | |
Welcome back. | 0:01:27 | 0:01:28
Has Blue Monday got the best of you? | 0:01:28 | 0:01:31
I don't agree with that, it's more
gloom January or early February? -- | 0:01:31 | 0:01:39
or Luke February. I think by the end
of March... | 0:01:39 | 0:01:44
LAUGHTER
The most exciting thing for you | 0:01:44 | 0:01:52
today? I've come here!
APPLAUSE | 0:01:52 | 0:01:56
The green couch is a bit of a lift.
We are not going to disappoint! | 0:01:56 | 0:02:00
We are going to catch up with One
Show viewers... | 0:02:00 | 0:02:08
Let's start by catching up
with a group of One Show viewers | 0:02:08 | 0:02:11
who we turn to when we need
new technology tested | 0:02:11 | 0:02:13
and no-nonsense questions asked. | 0:02:13 | 0:02:14
So far, they've tackled smart tech,
online security and electric | 0:02:14 | 0:02:16
cars on your behalf.
Now, they're entering the world | 0:02:16 | 0:02:19
of crypto-currencies. | 0:02:19 | 0:02:20
So have we pushed them
too far this time? | 0:02:20 | 0:02:22
You can't physically touch Bitcoin.
Does this thing actually exist? It's | 0:02:22 | 0:02:31
not actually money. The One Show
viewers know next to nothing about | 0:02:31 | 0:02:36
Bitcoin, so we set them a challenge,
to see if they can make it big in | 0:02:36 | 0:02:42
the Bitcoin world. That an ordinary
cash machine, that's not it. Their | 0:02:42 | 0:02:48
first task is to get their hands on
some. Frank and Annie are at one of | 0:02:48 | 0:02:54
the few Bitcoin ATMs. I've got to
get this done! As Bitcoin only this | 0:02:54 | 0:03:01
online, they have to use a
smartphone to receive their currency | 0:03:01 | 0:03:06
digitally. -- Bitcoin only exists
online. Dunnett! We can put the | 0:03:06 | 0:03:14
money in a now -- done it. Yes, I've
done that. They call for back-up. | 0:03:14 | 0:03:22
You just need to get up this code,
which looks like this. Insert that. | 0:03:22 | 0:03:31
And again! The exchange rate is a
whopping £13,500 to one Bitcoin. | 0:03:31 | 0:03:46
Where are we going now? I don't
no... Lets go and have a coffee! | 0:03:46 | 0:03:51
Bitcoin at the ready. They are keen
to have a go as spending it. Do you | 0:03:51 | 0:03:59
take Bitcoins, love? Do you take
them in payment? Is it like | 0:03:59 | 0:04:06
contactless? Do you except Bitcoin?
Most Bitcoin transactions occur | 0:04:06 | 0:04:13
online, but they find one of only
three places on the High Street in | 0:04:13 | 0:04:16
Leeds which take it. Meal finished,
it's time to settle the bill. I have | 0:04:16 | 0:04:23
generated the receipt in pounds. It
will automatically convert it into | 0:04:23 | 0:04:28
Bitcoin. It incurs a charge. A hefty
transaction fee adds another £13 45 | 0:04:28 | 0:04:35
to their bill. It was virtually
double what was on the menu. | 0:04:35 | 0:04:40
Absolutely stupid, in my eyes. I'll
let you into a sequel, I will never | 0:04:40 | 0:04:44
Bitcoin ever again! -- a secret.
Spending Bitcoin comes at a cost, | 0:04:44 | 0:04:53
but what about investing it? | 0:04:53 | 0:04:59
but what about investing it? Linda
and Dave are meeting and investment | 0:04:59 | 0:05:02
director and Bitcoin sceptic. This
is a potential get rich quick | 0:05:02 | 0:05:07
scheme, in all fairness, it's worked
incredibly well. It is not an | 0:05:07 | 0:05:11
investment, for me. What happens if
it goes wrong? Can I afford to lose | 0:05:11 | 0:05:16
the money, permanently? You are not
compensated by the mine and services | 0:05:16 | 0:05:23
compensation scheme. What's gone is
gone. In the spirit of our is -- | 0:05:23 | 0:05:31
experiment, they take the risk. With
such little regulation, you could be | 0:05:31 | 0:05:36
at risk of identity fraud. Dave and
Linda are using a reputable website. | 0:05:36 | 0:05:42
It's going to go up, and we are
going to make money, this is what we | 0:05:42 | 0:05:45
hope! The key to making money from
any investment is timing. The price | 0:05:45 | 0:05:51
of the | 0:05:51 | 0:05:56 | |
of the coin -- Bitcoin has
plummeted. It can go up or down by | 0:05:57 | 0:06:00
thousands. That is what your £40 is
now worth. £31 57. Groups! It's time | 0:06:00 | 0:06:09
to cash out. In the months since
they have bought their Bitcoin, it | 0:06:09 | 0:06:13
has dropped to ten point £5,000.
Dave and Linda's at Gwent website | 0:06:13 | 0:06:19
doesn't pay out in sterling, they
end up with 27 euros. It is easy to | 0:06:19 | 0:06:25
put the money in, but getting it out
has proved mega problems. After | 0:06:25 | 0:06:32
fees, Frank and Annie have just £17.
We have lost half of the money. Nora | 0:06:32 | 0:06:40
has been stung with more charges.
They have taken someone money out of | 0:06:40 | 0:06:46
my account. Not a very good
investment, as far as I'm concerned. | 0:06:46 | 0:06:54
Banks, team. | 0:06:54 | 0:06:57
-- thanks. | 0:06:57 | 0:06:58
Gavin Brown is here -
a bitcoin expert and Senior Lecturer | 0:06:58 | 0:07:01
in Financial Economics
at Manchester Metropolitan | 0:07:01 | 0:07:02
University. | 0:07:02 | 0:07:03
And you have invested some of your
own money in Bitcoin. As we saw from | 0:07:03 | 0:07:07
the video, is not great for
day-to-day, Bitcoin. | 0:07:07 | 0:07:10
So, apart from drug dealers
and other shady types, | 0:07:10 | 0:07:12
is there any reason for anybody
to actually use bitcoin? | 0:07:12 | 0:07:17
That's a good point. For small level
transactions on a day-to-day basis, | 0:07:17 | 0:07:22
it cannot be efficient in terms of
time and transaction costs, it has a | 0:07:22 | 0:07:27
lot of connotations with the
criminal element and that sort of | 0:07:27 | 0:07:29
thing. But Bitcoin itself is a
fantastic innovation. It allows you | 0:07:29 | 0:07:35
to do banking without the need for a
bank. You can move money around | 0:07:35 | 0:07:40
instantly without any transaction
fees, regulatory oversight, tax | 0:07:40 | 0:07:46
authority looking at the
transaction. For a lot of | 0:07:46 | 0:07:50
institutions, it is an empowering
thing. | 0:07:50 | 0:07:52
We saw in the film that the value
of bitcoin dropped. | 0:07:52 | 0:07:55
What makes bitcoin go
up and down in value? | 0:07:55 | 0:07:57
It is the volatility that gets the
headlines because it is such an | 0:07:57 | 0:08:02
embryonic and Newmarket. It only
takes a small announcement by a | 0:08:02 | 0:08:06
country or regulator to say
something negative or positive and | 0:08:06 | 0:08:08
the price will fluctuate wildly. I
couldn't cope with the stress! This | 0:08:08 | 0:08:18
is why you wouldn't have a lot of
your wealth in it, you wouldn't | 0:08:18 | 0:08:26
sleep at night! It was bad time for
our group, who invested at the wrong | 0:08:26 | 0:08:30
time. As soon as the cameras stopped
rolling, the price shot up again. | 0:08:30 | 0:08:36
Back in the game! In a one-month
period since we filmed that, Bitcoin | 0:08:36 | 0:08:40
lost a third of its value, but over
a 12 month period it has gone up | 0:08:40 | 0:08:46
1300%, which is significant. | 0:08:46 | 0:08:48
How is it made? | 0:08:48 | 0:08:52
What mind, as they say? There are
two choices, we could create a coin | 0:08:52 | 0:08:58
here and now, make a new coin. You
can put it onto the market in one go | 0:08:58 | 0:09:04
and hope that people started used it
as a transfer of value or release it | 0:09:04 | 0:09:08
slowly, release it in blocks, one
blogs every ten minutes. -- blocks. | 0:09:08 | 0:09:15
It is a Bitcoin inside a puzzle,
your job as a minor is to use a | 0:09:15 | 0:09:20
computer to solve the puzzle to win
the Bitcoin. You may say, what's the | 0:09:20 | 0:09:25
point in that? What that is for is
because computers cost money and | 0:09:25 | 0:09:29
have to be powered, which also costs
money. When you get out of the | 0:09:29 | 0:09:33
Bitcoin, you have spent a lot of
money getting it. That value | 0:09:33 | 0:09:37
transfers to the coin itself, which
gives the currency some values the | 0:09:37 | 0:09:41
point there's a lot of machinery
that generate this. It's huge. | 0:09:41 | 0:09:46
People are starting to shout about
this. If Bitcoin was a country, it | 0:09:46 | 0:09:52
uses more electricity in the last 12
months than 150 other countries | 0:09:52 | 0:09:56
globally. From a green perspective,
very poor. The mining will see is | 0:09:56 | 0:10:01
what the maximum number of points
are in circulation. Liz, your | 0:10:01 | 0:10:06
character's husband, Max, he is a
tech genius. Just the name of it, | 0:10:06 | 0:10:10
crypto-currency! That's really it.
Every time I want to get Max back in | 0:10:10 | 0:10:18
the series, trying to find ways of
getting him back. I think that would | 0:10:18 | 0:10:22
be a great crime that we could be
looking at, Bitcoin. Happy to have | 0:10:22 | 0:10:29
helped! Will be on the next series! | 0:10:29 | 0:10:34
In tonight's episode,
your characters are juggling solving | 0:10:34 | 0:10:36
a crime and keeping an eye
on Jack's love life. | 0:10:36 | 0:10:39
Jack, I will ask Kelly some
questions and need you to do the | 0:10:39 | 0:10:44
full number, computers, phones,
cameras... I will need to... It will | 0:10:44 | 0:10:50
my pleasure. | 0:10:50 | 0:10:56
my pleasure. And need asking price,
did he? What? Jack, not normally | 0:10:56 | 0:11:03
this attentive -- didn't need asking
price. Cancel his toxicology | 0:11:03 | 0:11:07
results. All normal except for very
high levels of... She was planning | 0:11:07 | 0:11:15
to terminate the pregnancy. Yes.
APPLAUSE | 0:11:15 | 0:11:23
In general, the good news is, you
are back. Emilia Clarke your | 0:11:23 | 0:11:28
character did make it, she went
through with the whole De Bock Eoin | 0:11:28 | 0:11:32
go. You must have spent so many
months with your character saying, | 0:11:32 | 0:11:36
is she alive?! -- each with the
whole De Bock. Not many people | 0:11:36 | 0:11:42
thought it was a dream. All this
past year I have had people saying, | 0:11:42 | 0:11:49
is she coming back? She was left in
the box. It was a very serial, | 0:11:49 | 0:11:54
dreamy sequence on the beach. Did it
happen or didn't it? People finally | 0:11:54 | 0:12:00
got it, and now we are back. I'm
relieved that we are back! | 0:12:00 | 0:12:05
And the first two-parter of
the new series did not disappoint. | 0:12:05 | 0:12:08
What can we look forward to tonight? | 0:12:08 | 0:12:13
Following on from the personal story
of Nikki, she is still recovering | 0:12:13 | 0:12:18
from the aftermath of Mexico. You
see a little bit about Jack and the | 0:12:18 | 0:12:24
relationship that he has with the
detective on the case. And the crime | 0:12:24 | 0:12:28
story is about the hacking of a
hospital database, and the | 0:12:28 | 0:12:31
blackmailing of patients. We often
get asked, how is it in George Weah | 0:12:31 | 0:12:40
21 series? When we were doing this
NHS data hacking case, it was | 0:12:40 | 0:12:44
happening in the news last year --
how has it endured. It is so | 0:12:44 | 0:12:49
topical, that's part of it. These
stories are written months, even one | 0:12:49 | 0:12:54
year in advance. We were doing it,
it was almost like somebody had | 0:12:54 | 0:12:59
foreseen the future! Strangely, the
last time you want, you were talking | 0:12:59 | 0:13:03
about the fact that we might get to
see more your personal life. That's | 0:13:03 | 0:13:08
going to be happening, too. Your
character is at the centre of one of | 0:13:08 | 0:13:16
the can't coming episodes. There is
an episode coming up, -- up and | 0:13:16 | 0:13:22
coming episodes. It is a disability
hate crime that takes place in care | 0:13:22 | 0:13:26
homes. We have always avoided
talking overtly about disability. I | 0:13:26 | 0:13:31
will into a scene, we know I'm a
wheelchair user, but we've not | 0:13:31 | 0:13:35
addressed that fact, I've never had
to confront it. But this time there | 0:13:35 | 0:13:40
are crimes that are around disabled
people and Clarissa can't help but | 0:13:40 | 0:13:45
get involved. There is a lot of
soul-searching, it is a painful | 0:13:45 | 0:13:49
episode. She revisits her past, as
well. On the flip side, we see | 0:13:49 | 0:13:54
Mickey having a love interest, which
doesn't happen regularly! So will we | 0:13:54 | 0:13:59
see Nikki. | 0:13:59 | 0:14:05
Is that good? A lot of people hate
the love scene thing. It is good | 0:14:07 | 0:14:12
because the relationship she had
with Harry really meant something. I | 0:14:12 | 0:14:19
get asked every series, I knew going
to have a relationship, but this | 0:14:19 | 0:14:24
series you do see her with a smile
on her face and it helps with | 0:14:24 | 0:14:29
getting through Mexico, moving on,
then we get back into Silent Witness | 0:14:29 | 0:14:33
as we know it. Is your love
interests have always died! A lot of | 0:14:33 | 0:14:41
people want you to be with Jack as
well. Yes, exactly. There have been | 0:14:41 | 0:14:47
a few moments between us. And where
do you sit, with the format of the | 0:14:47 | 0:14:56
two parter, do you enjoy that?
Because there are now so many boxed | 0:14:56 | 0:15:01
sets you can gorge on but now you
have the nation on tenterhooks until | 0:15:01 | 0:15:05
the next episode, do you enjoy that?
I think it's a luxury. There are so | 0:15:05 | 0:15:13
many series, the forerunner is
really things like CSI which is just | 0:15:13 | 0:15:17
one hour, it is not much time but we
are allowed to tell stories in two | 0:15:17 | 0:15:23
ours. We often think of them as
films. Tuesday morning must be a | 0:15:23 | 0:15:31
nightmare, do people badger you? A
lot of them wait and watch it in one | 0:15:31 | 0:15:37
go. It is nice to be doing something
different from the box set thing | 0:15:37 | 0:15:41
because you get satisfaction in the
Monday storytelling, and the fact it | 0:15:41 | 0:15:47
is two hours you get really great
guest casts coming along because | 0:15:47 | 0:15:51
they can get into the meat of their
characters. You get. It to tell. We | 0:15:51 | 0:15:58
haven't got long to wait until the
first of the two part coming in the | 0:15:58 | 0:16:02
next couple of days but we are going
to move onto another love of yours | 0:16:02 | 0:16:08
right now, c - cat owners. | 0:16:08 | 0:16:14
They have long realised
that their pets have plenty | 0:16:14 | 0:16:16
in common with their wild cousins. | 0:16:16 | 0:16:18
But until the Big Cats
series started last week, | 0:16:18 | 0:16:20
they might not have realised
exactly how much. | 0:16:20 | 0:16:22
Here's Patrick. | 0:16:22 | 0:16:28
Watching big cats on TV helps us
learn about their lives but we can | 0:16:32 | 0:16:37
see similar behaviour is a little
closer to home. | 0:16:37 | 0:16:47
closer to home. Just like their
fellow fierce felines, these | 0:16:47 | 0:16:52
13-week-old kittens use their
excellent hearing and sight to lock | 0:16:52 | 0:16:59
onto a target, closing... Before the
pounds. -- pounce. | 0:16:59 | 0:17:13
Much like lions in the wild, play
fighting is all about learning. All | 0:17:14 | 0:17:19
rules are off. Neck biting, head
locks, kick boxing are all fair | 0:17:19 | 0:17:28
tactics. These behaviours would be
used to bring down prey in the wild, | 0:17:28 | 0:17:34
but for these kittens it's about
figuring out how far one can push | 0:17:34 | 0:17:38
the other. | 0:17:38 | 0:17:45
the other. Cats will often follow up
a scrap with a clean. Up to a tenth | 0:17:45 | 0:17:51
of their waking hours are spent
grooming but it's not just about | 0:17:51 | 0:17:55
keeping their first in top
condition. Grooming helps to calm | 0:17:55 | 0:18:00
each other and creates a communal
sent to show they are part of the | 0:18:00 | 0:18:05
same gang. All cleaned up, there is
still much to explore. Climbing | 0:18:05 | 0:18:10
isn't just fun, it helps keep their
claws sharp. Solitary cats can be | 0:18:10 | 0:18:16
vulnerable to attack in the wild
which is why kittens instinctively | 0:18:16 | 0:18:22
head for high lookout points. New
objects need to be explored, | 0:18:22 | 0:18:28
ensuring their curious nature is
satisfied. Even if it means changing | 0:18:28 | 0:18:32
the channel. | 0:18:32 | 0:18:40
Cats instinctively know that Prodi
move away from them, and with | 0:18:40 | 0:18:45
razor-sharp reactions and new toy
gives them chance to practice. One | 0:18:45 | 0:18:50
giant leap for cat kind. Kittens
developed strong muscles, but by the | 0:18:50 | 0:18:58
time they are fully grown that will
help them jump vertically 2.5 metres | 0:18:58 | 0:19:04
from a standstill, which would be
used in the wild to capture an | 0:19:04 | 0:19:09
escaping meal. A burst of activity
is usually followed by an out, | 0:19:09 | 0:19:14
something that comes most naturally
to all cats. At this age, they will | 0:19:14 | 0:19:22
sleep for more than 13 hours a day,
just like their wild cousins. | 0:19:22 | 0:19:28
Dreaming of their adventures around
the house. | 0:19:28 | 0:19:34
That's what we are like on the sofa
after the One Show. Big Cats is back | 0:19:34 | 0:19:41
on Thursday on BBC One. C, we
mentioned you are cat lover and you | 0:19:41 | 0:19:49
brought in some photos. You
introduced the nation to this lovely | 0:19:49 | 0:19:54
feline. This is cat Fraser. I was
going to say, you've got a panther! | 0:19:54 | 0:20:04
Named after Matt, and like Matt,
they don't have thumbs. It's a | 0:20:04 | 0:20:14
lovely sofa, it was velvet, it is
now shreds. She is tiny, we have | 0:20:14 | 0:20:20
three cats, all black. She is the
smallest and we are terrified of | 0:20:20 | 0:20:24
her. | 0:20:24 | 0:20:28 | |
Matt Forde is here! | 0:20:28 | 0:20:31
You're about to embark
on the fourth series of Unspun - | 0:20:31 | 0:20:34
your topical political comedy chat
show on Dave. | 0:20:34 | 0:20:37
Starting shortly. | 0:20:37 | 0:20:38
What are your predictions for 2018? | 0:20:38 | 0:20:43
I should say I am all for our
predictions. I take no | 0:20:44 | 0:20:49
responsibility. Shall we not do it
then? Europe will continue to drive | 0:20:49 | 0:20:58
the Tory party apart. I think Boris
Johnson specifically will continue | 0:20:58 | 0:21:01
to misbehave. That's not a great
revelation. He will continue... It | 0:21:01 | 0:21:09
is the self-promotion. Let me just
say no, no, no what, it is to be | 0:21:09 | 0:21:19
here today. Watch him, next time
he's interviewed, always three | 0:21:19 | 0:21:23
different things going in his head
at any one point. I want to say | 0:21:23 | 0:21:27
about Jeremy Corbyn, no, no, no, the
BBC... My favourite has always been | 0:21:27 | 0:21:35
the chocolate hob knob. Not
necessarily an exclusive. I think | 0:21:35 | 0:21:44
Labour will continue to be torn
apart with Europe. Jeremy Corbyn has | 0:21:44 | 0:21:49
walked the line but increasingly he
will become more pragmatic. You have | 0:21:49 | 0:21:57
seen this with sucking Chris
Williamson who talked about council | 0:21:57 | 0:22:00
tax. My big prediction for the year,
and I talked to a lot of MPs as you | 0:22:00 | 0:22:06
know, this is a real exclusive,
there will be a general election | 0:22:06 | 0:22:11
this year, guaranteed. It will be in
Russia. If you do fancy an outside | 0:22:11 | 0:22:23
bet on a lad called Vlad Putin. What
about Nigel Farage? He could be | 0:22:24 | 0:22:30
back. The current Ukip leader is in
trouble, just days after Nigel has | 0:22:30 | 0:22:38
called for a second referendum. I
don't think there's any coincidence | 0:22:38 | 0:22:42
in that. I have interviewed him
before, Nigel. It is fair to say he | 0:22:42 | 0:22:48
will just throw grenades out there,
not literally, although let's see | 0:22:48 | 0:22:53
how desperate he gets. I interviewed
him years ago and on climate change | 0:22:53 | 0:22:58
he said this, "People talk about the
greenhouse effect. Have you seen a | 0:22:58 | 0:23:04
greenhouse? I mean stuff actually
grows in there." Oh dear! I just | 0:23:04 | 0:23:14
went, fair point. One man who has
been accused of misjudging | 0:23:14 | 0:23:20
situations and offending people,
Donald Trump. Is there any way you | 0:23:20 | 0:23:24
can spin it to a positive in the way
only Matt Forde does. Getting the | 0:23:24 | 0:23:35
next series has been helped by
strong. A lot of people would say he | 0:23:35 | 0:23:42
has kept some of his promises. He
pulled out of the Paris climate | 0:23:42 | 0:23:46
change agreement which delighted
Nigel Farage. Apart from | 0:23:46 | 0:23:49
contributing to perhaps economic
growth, so there are some positives. | 0:23:49 | 0:23:57
His greatest achievement is the
sowing of confusion, he is almost | 0:23:57 | 0:24:02
impossible to campaign against
because people never know by the way | 0:24:02 | 0:24:06
where he stands. And I want to say,
it is the norm, it is an honour to | 0:24:06 | 0:24:11
be on the top rated show on the BBC
at 7pm, it really is. | 0:24:11 | 0:24:20
at 7pm, it really is. I'm afraid we
are going to shut you up! | 0:24:20 | 0:24:35
Thanks for joining us. | 0:24:36 | 0:24:37
What sort of man refuses to pay
a ransom for his kidnapped | 0:24:37 | 0:24:40
grandson even though he has,
as the film title has it, | 0:24:40 | 0:24:43
All The Money In The World? | 0:24:43 | 0:24:44
With the film starring
Christopher Plummer expected to do | 0:24:44 | 0:24:46
well at the Baftas and Oscars,
Gyles has been delving | 0:24:46 | 0:24:49
into the world of John Paul Getty. | 0:24:49 | 0:24:50
Money is secondary. I like the
company of women, I like to think | 0:24:50 | 0:24:54
I'm average. John Paul Getty. By the
1960s, the richest person in the | 0:24:54 | 0:25:02
world, the first privately made
billionaire. He grew a vast oil | 0:25:02 | 0:25:07
empire and spawned a Dynasty still
renowned today, but he had a | 0:25:07 | 0:25:10
reputation as a miser and a
womaniser, cohort, callous and | 0:25:10 | 0:25:15
calculating. Unfortunately I cannot
interview him, he died in 1976 aged | 0:25:15 | 0:25:21
83, but I knew a man who did
interview him. | 0:25:21 | 0:25:30
interview him. I knew him well. Alan
Wicker. Deep in the BBC archives... | 0:25:30 | 0:25:33
Is an extraordinary, electric
interview with the richest man on | 0:25:33 | 0:25:36
earth, conducted at his man --
mansion in Surrey. At the time it | 0:25:36 | 0:25:44
was like being invited to the Court
of a king. Did you set out to become | 0:25:44 | 0:25:48
the richest man in the world? No, I
never had any interest. I was the | 0:25:48 | 0:25:54
only child and I had to carry all
the business. Alan wasn't just | 0:25:54 | 0:25:59
interested in how Getty inherited an
oil empire and grew it into | 0:25:59 | 0:26:03
something vast, he wanted to know
what made the man take. There are | 0:26:03 | 0:26:08
great many stories of your care with
money, for example you've installed | 0:26:08 | 0:26:12
up a telephone box to prevent your
guests abusing your hospitality by | 0:26:12 | 0:26:19
drunken calls. My guests would think
that the benefit. It is daunting | 0:26:19 | 0:26:25
when you have to put in a
long-distance call and charge your | 0:26:25 | 0:26:29
host with it. What came back was
measured, calculated, so cool that | 0:26:29 | 0:26:35
seemed devoid of everything. It does
seem you have been fairly ruthless | 0:26:35 | 0:26:40
in your personal relationships. You
left your wives at the time of the | 0:26:40 | 0:26:44
birth of your children to go back to
your business. Have you always put | 0:26:44 | 0:26:50
business first? Not any kind of
business but important business. | 0:26:50 | 0:26:54
What would be important enough to
take you away? Informed decisions | 0:26:54 | 0:26:59
have to be quickly made. They always
say business before pleasure and | 0:26:59 | 0:27:03
maybe there is too much of it in my
marriages. How do you think your | 0:27:03 | 0:27:07
relationship with other people would
change if by some catastrophe you | 0:27:07 | 0:27:12
lost all your money? I hope I would
have three or four friends laughed. | 0:27:12 | 0:27:17
Getty ran his billion-dollar
business from his 72 room mansion. | 0:27:17 | 0:27:22
Denise worked there in the 1970s,
counting the cash for one of his | 0:27:22 | 0:27:27
many companies. The own written rule
would have been you don't talk about | 0:27:27 | 0:27:34
Mystic Getty's personal life. He was
a private man and I respected his | 0:27:34 | 0:27:40
status. We would see him about the
Estates occasionally, particularly | 0:27:40 | 0:27:44
when he went to visit his lion. We
used to have an office party every | 0:27:44 | 0:27:52
year and one year he came to it, and
to an extent he was very friendly | 0:27:52 | 0:27:57
with some of his employees, those
that were above me. Eventually Alan | 0:27:57 | 0:28:03
Wicker asked the question you have
to ask the richest man on earth, | 0:28:03 | 0:28:08
does money make you happy? Using to
be a melancholy man, Mr Getty, in | 0:28:08 | 0:28:13
fact you often look so miserable
people must believe the money has | 0:28:13 | 0:28:18
not brought you much happiness? That
is the effect of responsibility. | 0:28:18 | 0:28:22
Ever since my father died, I haven't
had the buoyant feeling I had | 0:28:22 | 0:28:26
before. Presumably you believe money
doesn't buy you happiness, what else | 0:28:26 | 0:28:34
does it not buy? It cannot buy you
health. Some of the best times I had | 0:28:34 | 0:28:40
don't cost any money, down on the
beach on the surfboard, not spending | 0:28:40 | 0:28:44
any money there. | 0:28:44 | 0:28:52
Fascinating insight into
John Paul Getty, a decade before | 0:28:53 | 0:28:55
the kidnap of his grandson. | 0:28:55 | 0:28:56
Well, that's all we've got time for. | 0:28:56 | 0:28:58
A big thanks to our guests. | 0:28:58 | 0:28:59
You can see Emilia and Liz in Silent
Witness tonight at 9pm on BBC One. | 0:28:59 | 0:29:03
And to Matt Forde,
who is back with Unspun | 0:29:03 | 0:29:05
on Dave from January 28th. | 0:29:05 | 0:29:11
Before we go, we were sorry to hear
of the sad death today of the | 0:29:11 | 0:29:18
unforgettable Dolores O'Riordan. She
performed on the show with her band | 0:29:18 | 0:29:27
last year, the Cranberries. | 0:29:27 | 0:29:38
