time for the one show -- time for The One Show with Alex Jones and the | :00:14. | :00:36.
new presenter. Don't judge me. I don't do judging any more. Of | :00:37. | :00:42.
course. Hello and welcome to The One Show with Alex Jones and Nick | :00:43. | :00:46.
Grimshaw. To my delight you have ditched the X Factor so you can do | :00:47. | :00:50.
this on Friday. That's literally why I did it! I could have kept it. Also | :00:51. | :00:58.
tonight keeping us company will be the wonderful Nadiya Hussain. I love | :00:59. | :01:05.
Nadiya. So excited she is on. We also have a special live performance | :01:06. | :01:10.
from the BBC Sound of 2016 winner, Jack Garrett. He is amazing. And | :01:11. | :01:18.
such a nice boy. He is a lovely man. Our guest couldn't stand the heat in | :01:19. | :01:23.
the kitchen so he has decided to join us, please welcome James | :01:24. | :01:30.
Martin. Back to work tomorrow. Now that Nick has stepped away from the | :01:31. | :01:34.
judging panel, are you going to put your hat in the ring? Judging? No! | :01:35. | :01:42.
We thought you would say no. I will stick to the day job. Very busy on a | :01:43. | :01:49.
Saturday. It is weird to see you in real life because I see you every | :01:50. | :01:58.
Saturday. Yes, generally hungover! It is ten years now, ten years this | :01:59. | :02:04.
Saturday! Is it? Are you having a party? No, no party. We don't have | :02:05. | :02:12.
the budget for that. It is ten years. Congratulations. And you have | :02:13. | :02:20.
a new show which we will talk about. There is a storm brewing in Cornwall | :02:21. | :02:25.
over the appearance of a new carving of Merlin. Some people have called | :02:26. | :02:30.
it Randall is, a desecration and also dumbed down populist trash. | :02:31. | :02:34.
Ajmal called it vandalism. Tell us what you really think! Rendition | :02:35. | :02:39.
Heritage says it brings the legend of Merlin to life -- English | :02:40. | :02:46.
Heritage. Tintagel on the North Cornwall coast is a mecca that has | :02:47. | :02:49.
long been associated with the legend of King Arthur. Endless Heritage to | :02:50. | :02:55.
look after a post office direct properties have embraced the legend | :02:56. | :02:59.
and commissioned a sculpture to place the face of Merlin on to one | :03:00. | :03:03.
of the rocks below, in order to get more people to visit. | :03:04. | :03:13.
I have to say it is surprisingly small, isn't it? I took a few | :03:14. | :03:20.
photographs of it and every morning it looked a bit more like Mount | :03:21. | :03:24.
Rushmore. Is the rock difficult to sculpt? It isn't easy, to be honest. | :03:25. | :03:29.
It is Slate, which has its challenges. The sculpture will be | :03:30. | :03:34.
here because it's quite discreet and also because it is one of the few | :03:35. | :03:41.
solid pieces of stone in the area. So it probably won't last forever | :03:42. | :03:45.
here? I would hope for ten years, maybe longer. The incoming tide has | :03:46. | :03:54.
forced me off the beat so it's time to go up to meet one of the locals | :03:55. | :04:04.
who finds the sculpture and outrage. And are presented from English | :04:05. | :04:09.
Heritage. The sculpture down there, how do you feel about it? I don't | :04:10. | :04:13.
think the natural rock face should have been touched. A lot of talk on | :04:14. | :04:18.
social media, I'm sorry to say that the word that is frequently used is | :04:19. | :04:23.
vandalism. It is hardly a 30 foot statue of Mickey Mouse, is it? Is it | :04:24. | :04:29.
isn't far off. You are trying to get people to come and enjoy the castle, | :04:30. | :04:34.
and this is part of it. That's right, it is part of a larger scheme | :04:35. | :04:37.
at Tintagel over the next few months. It explores the archaeology | :04:38. | :04:43.
of the site because the legend and history are part of the site, it is | :04:44. | :04:47.
to bring to life the history of why this beach was really important to | :04:48. | :04:52.
the legend. You are worried this will open up the floodgates, so to | :04:53. | :04:57.
speak? What worries me is that although the legendary heritage is | :04:58. | :05:00.
very important, it isn't as important as the actual factual | :05:01. | :05:08.
history of the place. The legend is swamping the history. There is | :05:09. | :05:13.
hardly any mention of the 300 years of Cornish royalty that lived there. | :05:14. | :05:20.
Where are the details of those? Obviously people are fascinated by | :05:21. | :05:25.
Arthur and Merlin, but don't you have a responsibility to address | :05:26. | :05:29.
this Cornish history? Exactly, it's really important. We are trying to | :05:30. | :05:34.
balance them. What has been here at Tintagel for a while, people think | :05:35. | :05:37.
it is King Arthur's Castle and there is no history of what it is, so we | :05:38. | :05:42.
are telling the whole story and this carving is one aspect of the scheme. | :05:43. | :05:46.
I think people will be for it and against it but hopefully they will | :05:47. | :05:51.
come down and enjoy it. Absolutely, I have no doubt they will. Thank | :05:52. | :06:02.
you. Thanks. So, James, you have a new book out, another one. Yes, | :06:03. | :06:07.
thanks very much. She means another in a good way! It is tied into that | :06:08. | :06:15.
brilliant series, Home Comforts. Which you took part in? How was it? | :06:16. | :06:21.
Trying to steal my dog and everything is in my kitchen. So a | :06:22. | :06:27.
great TV show! It is brilliant, for cold days when you want to be | :06:28. | :06:33.
indoors. So if anybody is out there, Friday night, they haven't eaten, | :06:34. | :06:36.
what would you suggest that would be perfect? I said earlier to somebody | :06:37. | :06:41.
in the other room, steak and chips but apparently I have to say cottage | :06:42. | :06:45.
pie because there's a picture of it! So cottage pie would be amazing! | :06:46. | :06:53.
There you go, perfect. It just looks cosy, doesn't it? Yes, but it has to | :06:54. | :06:59.
be frozen peas, with a dollop of butter. Normally when we have a chef | :07:00. | :07:04.
on here, or on the radio, they always bring in something that they | :07:05. | :07:06.
have made. Have you bought something? No! Great. As well as the | :07:07. | :07:15.
book and the TV show you are going on tour? That's why, I've been | :07:16. | :07:20.
rehearsing. We start on Monday, the first two I've done, possibly the | :07:21. | :07:23.
last because I have aged over the last ten weeks since I was asked to | :07:24. | :07:28.
do it. I have been asked for 15 years to do the tour, but the right | :07:29. | :07:32.
people, it will be immense, everything I have wanted in a show. | :07:33. | :07:38.
It is 20 years of doing this, put together in one performance. In | :07:39. | :07:42.
Scotland for the next four weeks and then we are travelling around | :07:43. | :07:46.
Britain. It is called Plates, Mates and Automobiles. We know that you | :07:47. | :07:50.
love cars and food, so how are you going to combine the passions? Ten | :07:51. | :07:55.
weeks ago, I couldn't do this certain thing, I can't tell you what | :07:56. | :08:00.
it is. Four hours on Christmas Day, I have been rehearsing the final | :08:01. | :08:07.
four minutes. The finale? Some of my mates are taking part in it. They | :08:08. | :08:13.
have been teasing it, they won't tell us what it is, but it sounds | :08:14. | :08:18.
like a huge spectacle. If it doesn't work on Monday we won't do it again! | :08:19. | :08:24.
It kind of worked OK but we'll see. I wanted to do something that was | :08:25. | :08:29.
different, I did not want to say here is a score and so on. It has to | :08:30. | :08:37.
be fun and interactive -- scone. There are videos we will show for | :08:38. | :08:41.
it. We have a very famous comedian doing the voice. Can we reveal who | :08:42. | :08:47.
it is? Johnny Vegas, who I love. Because you want to Celtic it is. It | :08:48. | :08:56.
has got everybody -- cell tickets. It has everybody from a TV star to a | :08:57. | :09:03.
formula Formula 1 driver, they have all given up their time to do the | :09:04. | :09:09.
end bit. Who is going to be the guest? Is it like you do on Saturday | :09:10. | :09:15.
Kitchen? There is that side to it but I have spent four months getting | :09:16. | :09:19.
the end video together. I hope it works. It has to works. We spent | :09:20. | :09:25.
four months rehearsing for tonight. We are killing it! You are doing all | :09:26. | :09:34.
right. So you are going to be making recipes? It is obviously food, it is | :09:35. | :09:39.
Chat, interacting with cars, we have special video for it. It is 50 | :09:40. | :09:44.
minutes, one hour, the first part and then 15 minutes in the second | :09:45. | :09:48.
part. It is a great evening where people can have a great time, it | :09:49. | :09:54.
isn't just a cooking demonstration. Everything I have learned over the | :09:55. | :09:57.
last 30 odd years put together into one format. How risky is the final | :09:58. | :10:05.
bit? Is it like, it could go wrong? A while ago I couldn't do it at all | :10:06. | :10:10.
in my life. When I told the tour organisers I suggested it and they | :10:11. | :10:14.
said, really, if you can pull it off it will be all right. Is it a big | :10:15. | :10:19.
tank, with snakes? There are petrol tanks. Ooh. Say no more. A couple of | :10:20. | :10:28.
places have sold out, including my hometown, we are all over | :10:29. | :10:31.
Manchester, Blackpool, all over the place. Check it out. Because it is | :10:32. | :10:37.
called Plates, Mates and Automobiles, I have thought about | :10:38. | :10:39.
this little competition that we might do, OK? Pretty out there. By | :10:40. | :10:45.
going to try and see who has the most famous friends in their phone. | :10:46. | :10:49.
You are both pretty well connected so at the end of the show I both | :10:50. | :10:53.
want you to call a person in your phone who you believe is the most | :10:54. | :10:58.
famous person. And get them on The One Show? It is 7:10pm, it will end | :10:59. | :11:04.
at half-past. Everyone is going to be watching us. If you are famous | :11:05. | :11:12.
and if you know us, text us. I think it is going to be either. It is a | :11:13. | :11:19.
good challenge. James's tour, Plates, Mates and Automobiles, stars | :11:20. | :11:22.
in Glasgow on Monday and is going to travel around the country until the | :11:23. | :11:26.
23rd of March and his book, More Home Comforts, is out now. Who can | :11:27. | :11:32.
forget this Bake Off show stopper? Unbelievable, this is Nadiya's cream | :11:33. | :11:37.
soda cheesecake made possible thanks to the underrated vanilla pod. It is | :11:38. | :11:43.
really everything. As Nadiya has found out, her favourite ingredient | :11:44. | :11:48.
is anything but boring. When it comes to baking there is one | :11:49. | :11:52.
ingredient I never run out of, vanilla. It is the flavourful cream | :11:53. | :11:57.
soda, sponge cakes and ice cream. These funny looking things are one | :11:58. | :12:01.
of the most complex and versatile flavours on the planet, so I can't | :12:02. | :12:05.
understand why anybody would call them plain. These beans, or pods, | :12:06. | :12:13.
are refined into vanilla extract here, and this is the senior flavour | :12:14. | :12:16.
wrist. Rennella is anything but plain. They start as an orchid. -- | :12:17. | :12:24.
Rennella. It is a long green bean and it goes through a process of | :12:25. | :12:28.
curing and drying and it takes about six months. All of that effort makes | :12:29. | :12:34.
vanilla the second most expensive spice in the world behind saffron. | :12:35. | :12:39.
They also valuable that there is even a black market for these | :12:40. | :12:44.
vanilla pods. Traders go to great lengths to protect their crops from | :12:45. | :12:49.
thieves. Tatooine, branding, is something that the farmers who grow | :12:50. | :12:53.
the vanilla pods will do while they are growing, to identify them as | :12:54. | :13:01.
their own. Why would you turn them into an extract? If you're putting | :13:02. | :13:04.
this in a custard, entirely use the entire bean -- preferably use. We | :13:05. | :13:11.
would extract the flavour from the bean, and you can use the extract as | :13:12. | :13:16.
a liquid into your cake. And this is the vanilla extract. How do we go | :13:17. | :13:22.
from this, to this? Similar to how you make a cup of cough it you take | :13:23. | :13:26.
the beans, chop them into smaller pieces -- pick-up of coffee. We | :13:27. | :13:37.
would hate them up to various temperatures -- a cup of coffee. | :13:38. | :13:46.
Then we find out how we separate the flavour compounds from the extract. | :13:47. | :13:49.
You will find over 300 different flavour compounds. 300, that's | :13:50. | :13:55.
amazing. We can separate the extract into different flavour blocks. You | :13:56. | :14:00.
have wooden, smoky and creamy and it's only when they come together | :14:01. | :14:07.
that you get the overall impression. When separated, the flavours come as | :14:08. | :14:15.
a big surprise. There is a weird wheat. There is a creaminess, I can | :14:16. | :14:20.
smell or the boil. My goodness, that's cheese! -- smell the oil. | :14:21. | :14:27.
When you put them together, that's vanilla. That gives me an idea to | :14:28. | :14:33.
perfect a flavour of my own. I love cream soda flavour and I have had a | :14:34. | :14:38.
few attempts at making a syrup by boiling down two litres of cream | :14:39. | :14:44.
soda and I have had a lot of burnt pans. Can we reach rate the flavour | :14:45. | :14:49.
using the extract? Yes, you look around for the flavour compounds you | :14:50. | :14:54.
need to create the lemonade and ice cream profile. Let's have a go. | :14:55. | :14:59.
First we blamed together the fruity elements of the cream soda by adding | :15:00. | :15:02.
lemon to the mix. Finally we blend in the Manila and | :15:03. | :15:13.
the supposedly plain flavour is the one that makes all the difference -- | :15:14. | :15:18.
vanilla. That is the cream soda I know and love. It smells good in a | :15:19. | :15:22.
lab, but does it taste good? Staff from the kitchen have made some | :15:23. | :15:27.
doughnuts and cheesecake, using my essence of cream soda. This one | :15:28. | :15:31.
coats your mouth, it's all there. It's lovely. It's so good. That | :15:32. | :15:39.
smoking is, from the vanilla, and that flavour lasts so much longer in | :15:40. | :15:44.
your mouth. You can make the flavour more complex or more creamy. It | :15:45. | :15:50.
works well in a desert, especially Yun Wei cake dairy -based desert. | :15:51. | :15:55.
It's safe to say that vanilla isn't playing, vanilla is complex and | :15:56. | :16:00.
versatile. When I pick up of it bottle of vanilla extract it will | :16:01. | :16:05.
look very different to me now. We know you love vanilla and cream | :16:06. | :16:09.
soda and tonight you are going to make a recipe that dates back to | :16:10. | :16:14.
1852. Why was cream soda invented the first place? This recipe was | :16:15. | :16:19.
invented because they banned, in 1852 in America, they banned alcohol | :16:20. | :16:23.
consumption because there was too much boozing going on during the | :16:24. | :16:26.
day, so they created this recipe using sugar, the basic ingredients, | :16:27. | :16:34.
sugar... A little bit of sugar. A tiny bit! If you are on a diet, this | :16:35. | :16:40.
is perfect for you! You need to stay hydrated, so lots of water. Lots of | :16:41. | :16:45.
water. Do you kind of boil this down? You do, you boil the whole | :16:46. | :16:50.
thing down and you use citric acid and cream of tartar, this is not my | :16:51. | :16:55.
recipe by the way, and rock salt, and boil the whole thing down, then | :16:56. | :17:02.
you add and whisk egg and milk, I know, James is looking at me and | :17:03. | :17:07.
thinking, what? ! It doesn't sound appetising at all, does it? It | :17:08. | :17:13.
purifies it. You have added a few extra bits to make it palatable. | :17:14. | :17:19.
It's not the flavour we are used to, but in 1865 they patented it and | :17:20. | :17:23.
used things like vanilla and lemon and pineapple. I've gone a little | :17:24. | :17:27.
bit extra to make it more palatable, more like the cream soda we are used | :17:28. | :17:32.
to, and added some of the vanilla and lemon. It's always been an | :17:33. | :17:36.
evolving thing, it started then and now we are in 2016 and we have ice | :17:37. | :17:40.
cream soda, which I will demonstrate now. Newtown chefs, try to follow | :17:41. | :17:47.
me, all right? Right? -- you two chefs. You put lemonade in a glass. | :17:48. | :17:52.
I will do mind while you do yours. Get some ice cream... Is it just | :17:53. | :18:02.
vanilla, Nick? Well, flavour! Did you make ice cream? I bought it at | :18:03. | :18:06.
the supermarket. Pump it in, look how delicious that looks. When you | :18:07. | :18:11.
are little, colour modes was the height of excitement, doesn't it? -- | :18:12. | :18:18.
Coca-Cola floats. Oh my God, still is. Squirting cream is amazing. The | :18:19. | :18:30.
crazy chef. There you go. That's made all the difference! There you | :18:31. | :18:37.
go, look at that, James. I've got dishwater. Taste the flavour. This | :18:38. | :18:45.
is 1852 cream soda, with a few added bits and pieces. Vanilla is amazing, | :18:46. | :18:51.
when you see it growing on the trees, it's fantastic. It's OK, I've | :18:52. | :18:58.
never been that keen on cream soda, but it's all right. Thank you, Alex. | :18:59. | :19:04.
It's all right though. The salt works really well in it. You said it | :19:05. | :19:08.
wouldn't be that nice but it's all right. I was just proffering. This | :19:09. | :19:14.
is the modern version. It's going to be nice, it's just sugar. Yes, that | :19:15. | :19:28.
worked. I will let you have it. Who is the winner, James? Well... Come | :19:29. | :19:35.
on, who is the winner? I will let you both through. We are both | :19:36. | :19:37.
through! APPLAUSE | :19:38. | :19:43.
Very well done. Good, good. Loving it. Nice to see you. Now then, | :19:44. | :19:49.
phones are brilliant things, aren't they? That's a statement, isn't it! | :19:50. | :19:54.
We can do all sorts of things! With phones these days. Have you teed up | :19:55. | :20:03.
your famous mate? I'm trying to wake them more than anything else. | :20:04. | :20:10.
Interesting, could it be Kylie Minogue am Australian? Anyway, we | :20:11. | :20:13.
can do all sorts of our phones, they are really powerful, as powerful as | :20:14. | :20:19.
laptops. What do we use them for? Mainly looking at cats on the | :20:20. | :20:25.
Internet. Cats and cucumbers. Gyles wanted a piece of the action. I'm | :20:26. | :20:31.
learning so much! Ever since cat videos first appeared on YouTube a | :20:32. | :20:35.
decade ago we have got absolutely mad for them. Many of these videos | :20:36. | :20:39.
have gone viral. The Internet is full of them. Simon, take a look at | :20:40. | :20:47.
this. 80 million hits. If you can do something like this, millions of | :20:48. | :20:50.
people will be watching you and we can make millions, to. Or rather, I | :20:51. | :20:56.
can make millions, but you have to deliver. Stop scratching, get at it. | :20:57. | :21:01.
Come on. There are more than 400 million cat videos on the Internet. | :21:02. | :21:07.
So what will make my daughter's cat, Simon, stand out? Simon! Simon! Now, | :21:08. | :21:13.
Simon, now, Simon. Sit, Simon. Is it. Sit! Sit, pussy. Now, Simon, we | :21:14. | :21:20.
are going to have to do better than that. If we are going to get rich, | :21:21. | :21:28.
like Grumpy Cat. She is famous for her miserable looks and her first | :21:29. | :21:33.
video has been watched 19 million times. She now has her own book | :21:34. | :21:37.
deal, an online shop, and is reported to have earned ?60 million. | :21:38. | :21:42.
There's a fortune to be made here, cat. Like Rat-macro little Bob, with | :21:43. | :21:52.
a chat show and movie deals. Bob. Hey, Bob. How did she get so famous? | :21:53. | :22:00.
Hi, Bob. She lives with her owner, Mike, in America. I started a blog | :22:01. | :22:05.
for her. Inevitably one of those photos I posted on her blog went | :22:06. | :22:11.
viral, as they say. Thousands began looking at it. I say inevitable | :22:12. | :22:16.
because look at her. It's a unique look. You do use in the eye of the | :22:17. | :22:23.
beholder, it's an unusual book -- beauty is in the eye of the | :22:24. | :22:26.
beholder, it's an unusual look. Simon is the James Dean of cats. I | :22:27. | :22:32.
think Bob might have a crush. What is your advice if we want to become | :22:33. | :22:37.
an Internet sensation, given that he simply hasn't? He simply hasn't, | :22:38. | :22:41.
that is the first step. If you want to develop a legion of followers, be | :22:42. | :22:46.
true to your cat. I don't think you want to dress your cat up or do | :22:47. | :22:49.
anything that he wouldn't do on his own and make it interesting. What | :22:50. | :22:54.
are your talents? What can you do? We need expert help. Roger, | :22:55. | :23:00.
registered TV cat trainer, has popped over for the morning. Come | :23:01. | :23:05.
on, Simon, come back to grampa. What can we teach him to do in the | :23:06. | :23:09.
limited time we have available? We have to work on what he can already | :23:10. | :23:15.
do, and encourage that. What are his tricks and skills? He will jump on | :23:16. | :23:19.
my laptop, try and tap on the case. If I try to shut him out of my | :23:20. | :23:24.
office, he will open the door himself. So Simon can open doors and | :23:25. | :23:30.
tap keys. We can work with that. Simon, Simon. He is coming and he is | :23:31. | :23:34.
even walking like Marlon Brando. This is it! Straight on those keys. | :23:35. | :23:46.
Comeback, Simon. Simon. That's it! Training over. Simon is ready to go | :23:47. | :23:54.
global. This is Cat Fantastic. Take it away. | :23:55. | :24:01.
CAT MIAOWS that was a bit cynical. But we like it. Earlier, I set these | :24:02. | :24:32.
two a challenge, to see who has the most famous friend on their phone. | :24:33. | :24:36.
They both have friends ready, I don't know who they are. James, we | :24:37. | :24:40.
will go with you first. You are the guest. Are you ready? You live on | :24:41. | :24:46.
BBC One, do not swear! LAUGHTER | :24:47. | :24:51.
I know what you like! First of all, whereabouts are you? I'm in Gran | :24:52. | :25:00.
canaria. In Gran canaria. Whereabouts are you? I'm in Gran | :25:01. | :25:05.
canaria. Of what's your name? Mary Berry. | :25:06. | :25:12.
CHEERING AND APPLAUSE Mary! God dammit, I love Mary Berry. | :25:13. | :25:20.
Mary Berry, sunbathing in Gran canaria. Mary Berry, have a lovely | :25:21. | :25:26.
holiday. I'm having a lovely... I've just arrived. Stay out of that pub! | :25:27. | :25:34.
We have to get Nick's, we have 30 seconds left. I have someone on the | :25:35. | :25:38.
phone who we met on the show. Not Des O'Connor. Who is that on the | :25:39. | :25:47.
line? Hello. Who is it? Hello. Hello, what is your name? My name is | :25:48. | :25:55.
Kate Winslet. No! Kate Winslet. CHEERING AND APPLAUSE | :25:56. | :25:59.
Hi, Kate Winslet, you are on The One Show. I'm on The One Show, I must | :26:00. | :26:03.
tell you my two-year-old is currently... I tell you what, that's | :26:04. | :26:09.
amazing. It's a draw, we love Mary Berry as well. Thanks, James. Kate | :26:10. | :26:17.
Winslet's child is throwing Mayo. Jack Garratt, amazing. Have a | :26:18. | :26:20.
fantastic weekend. Let's go to Jack Garratt. | :26:21. | :26:24. |
