Hello and welcome to The One Show with Matt Baker and Alex Jones. Now,

:00:20.:00:27.

there is no putting the showbiz gloss on tonight's guest. She has

:00:27.:00:31.

battled the bottle and battled the blokes, it's Denise Welch! APPLAUSE.

:00:31.:00:37.

Good to see you. Now, hang about, we mentioned at the end of last

:00:37.:00:41.

night's show, you were to joined by your husband, Tim Healy. You have

:00:41.:00:48.

not had a row? No, for once. He is poorly? He is poorly. It is

:00:48.:00:52.

not man flu, otherwise I would have kicked him up the bottom, but he

:00:52.:00:57.

has a poorly leg. He has to go to hospital. He was struggling this

:00:57.:01:01.

morning. So, obviously, he sends his apologies. The idea was to be

:01:01.:01:05.

here together. We do know he is watching. Earlier

:01:05.:01:09.

we nipped to your house in Cheshire, he recorded this special message

:01:09.:01:14.

for you. Did he, really? Here we go.

:01:14.:01:19.

Matt, Alex. I'm sorry I cannot be with you tonight. I have a gamy leg,

:01:19.:01:27.

but the Mrs Is on, the mouth of the Tyne. I would not get a word in

:01:27.:01:36.

edgeways with her! He is so polite. Gob of the Tyne, what a cheek! An

:01:36.:01:40.

affectionate term. We wish him all the best. What we love about you

:01:40.:01:44.

two is that off screen you are just a normal couple, but have a look at

:01:44.:01:50.

this... There you are on holiday. We would like to clarify that this

:01:50.:01:56.

is you two in Benidorm? It is us in Benidorm, but you may or may not

:01:56.:02:06.
:02:06.:02:08.

know that my dad used to be a drag act called Rakel wechwech. So I

:02:08.:02:16.

have been living in drag hell. My son did not flinch when he saw

:02:16.:02:25.

his dad in drag, as he is so used to it! We interested in the toe

:02:25.:02:29.

nails, they were matching! Yes, we like that.

:02:29.:02:39.

Do you fancy him he is dressed like that Well, I do ask him to bring

:02:39.:02:45.

the outfits home! No! Now, thanks to the internet, there are many

:02:45.:02:48.

more jobs to do from the home with the use of nothing more than a

:02:48.:02:53.

mouse, not that sort, and a key board, but as Dom discovered not

:02:53.:02:59.

all are what they seem, even if advertised through the jobcentre.

:02:59.:03:03.

We are living in difficult times. Jobs are becoming very hard to

:03:03.:03:08.

combi. But these days, the unemployed are

:03:08.:03:14.

facing a new, sinister menace. Fake jobs, advertised by crooks that

:03:15.:03:19.

could implicate unsuss pecting employees in a criminal scam.

:03:19.:03:25.

Single mum, Kara knows how easy it is to get sucked in. She was

:03:25.:03:28.

delighted for an add, a job that seemed perfect.

:03:28.:03:32.

The money was really tight. So I have been looking for a job. This

:03:32.:03:36.

job really appealed to me. It was working from home. The hours were

:03:36.:03:40.

to suit. So I could do it whenever I had free time.

:03:40.:03:46.

The job involved selling products through eBay, the auction website

:03:46.:03:50.

that allows people to buy and sell. She was to be the middle man

:03:50.:03:54.

selling goods on behalf of the company.

:03:54.:03:57.

I searched the company's name. There was even financial

:03:57.:04:02.

information that I looked up. Everything seemed legitimate to me.

:04:02.:04:09.

But, they were just fake sites. The scamers have a cover story. She

:04:09.:04:14.

applied via an e-mail and a woman calling herself Leah offered her

:04:14.:04:18.

the job. I was over the moon. So excited.

:04:18.:04:21.

I said I could start as soon as possible.

:04:21.:04:28.

The scammers sent Kara a list of what they wanted her to sell on

:04:28.:04:33.

eBay. She was asked to send the money to the employers.

:04:33.:04:38.

The company, once the orders came in, the problems started to appear.

:04:39.:04:44.

After a coup of days I started to get e-mails from the buyers asking

:04:44.:04:50.

where the products were. So I called Leah. It was always, "I'll

:04:50.:04:59.

get back to you" Or, "I'm too busy" It was when she stopped answering

:04:59.:05:05.

the phone or the e-mails I thought that this was not good.

:05:05.:05:10.

Kara had become a part of the scam. She deducted the money from the

:05:10.:05:15.

gods she sold, but the goods were never sent.

:05:15.:05:19.

-- goods. The unhappy customers complained to

:05:19.:05:26.

eBay, they refunded the money. Even though Kara kept her 40 commission,

:05:26.:05:31.

eBay started to chase her for the 400 they had lost.

:05:31.:05:36.

It is a worry. I hate checking my e-mails. I am checking my phone. I

:05:36.:05:40.

have eBay calling me, Debt Collection. There was nothing that

:05:40.:05:44.

I could do about it. We have spoken to seven others who

:05:44.:05:49.

we believe have been tricked by the scamers who go by a number of

:05:49.:05:53.

different names. Our viewers are being chased for more than 7,000,

:05:53.:05:56.

even though the crooks have most of the money.

:05:56.:06:01.

So, where were the crooks advertising the dodgy jobs? Well,

:06:01.:06:05.

shockingly on the website of the Government-run Jobcentre Plus.

:06:05.:06:12.

Surely the last place you would expect to find unscrupulous

:06:12.:06:17.

employers? When our viewers alerted them to the scamers advert it was

:06:17.:06:22.

taken down, but a couple of days later it was up again.

:06:22.:06:27.

So, Jobcentre Plus was leading jobseeker's to fraud.

:06:27.:06:33.

Jobcentre Plus said that as soon as they become aware of a bogus add it

:06:33.:06:37.

is removed and they conduct a investigation. They say that they

:06:37.:06:41.

will check all vacancies that mention eBay before they go live.

:06:41.:06:47.

I know it seems like a stupid thing for some people, a tiny amount of

:06:47.:06:52.

money to some, but to me that, that's a lot of money.

:06:52.:06:57.

It is a nasty crime, isn't it? Horrible. I would not wish this on

:06:57.:07:02.

anyone. It is horrible. What have you learned from this?

:07:02.:07:06.

Don't apply for jobs that seem far too good to be true.

:07:06.:07:15.

Dom, they -- this debacle hit Kara hard. What is the latest? Well, the

:07:15.:07:19.

Metropolitan Police are investigating an allegations of

:07:19.:07:23.

fraud. EBay said that as soon as they were made aware of the scam,

:07:23.:07:27.

they contacted the police and the Jobcentre Plus and asked them to

:07:27.:07:32.

vet the ads. EBay and PayPal will not chase her or the others now for

:07:32.:07:36.

money. That is a good thing. That is big news.

:07:36.:07:40.

When the cameras went off, she cried her eyes out there, she

:07:40.:07:45.

cannot afford this money. She was worried. She is an honest, decent

:07:45.:07:49.

person, panicking. She doesn't have to pay anything?

:07:49.:07:53.

Not a penny. Good news, there, but what is your

:07:53.:07:57.

advice on spotting the fake adverts? Is it common sense?

:07:57.:08:01.

hit the nail on the head. If you smell a rat, there is a good chance

:08:01.:08:06.

you are dealing with one. You have to look out for, they may sound

:08:06.:08:12.

obvious, but make sure that someone has a landline phone number. If you

:08:12.:08:19.

apply for a landline with BT, they vet you thoroughly. Mobiles, they

:08:19.:08:24.

give them to anyone. If they are premium rate numbers be

:08:24.:08:30.

cautious. Try to get a face-to-face interview. If they are offering you

:08:30.:08:35.

a job, try to go to a place where they are working. Also some jobs

:08:35.:08:40.

should ship you the goods and you ship them out, but use your

:08:40.:08:43.

intuition and common sense. It is difficult. You feel

:08:43.:08:48.

vulnerable when you are unemployed, you are looking for work?

:08:48.:08:52.

course,s an actress I've been unemployed several times. I have

:08:52.:08:57.

had to do all sorts of dodgy. Some of them were proper dodgy. Proper!

:08:57.:09:02.

What is the worst? I worked in a holiday camp that is no longer

:09:02.:09:06.

around. I know that most of them are fantastic, but I worked in this

:09:06.:09:11.

holiday camp, I cannot tell you what went on in the kitchens. On a

:09:11.:09:16.

Wednesday... On a Wednesday we used to make rice pudding. I used to

:09:16.:09:22.

watch what went on, I had to serve it to the tune of Girls, Girls,

:09:22.:09:27.

Girls, people had actually weed in the rice pudding.

:09:27.:09:35.

Let's move on! Now, yesterday we were moved by Pauline Prescott's

:09:35.:09:39.

story by a couple that had turned to a surrogate mum to help them

:09:39.:09:44.

have a baby. Tonight she returns to take up the story as they prepare

:09:44.:09:51.

for the birth. In 2009 Tania and Douglas lost their daughter, Lola

:09:51.:09:57.

Rose during childbirth. They wanted another baby, partly in a bid to

:09:57.:10:04.

heal their family's wounds. So with Tania unable to carry a baby, they

:10:04.:10:09.

had IVF treatment and turned to a surrogate mother to have their

:10:09.:10:13.

resulting child. Their story fascinates me as I handed over a

:10:13.:10:18.

baby that I carried. My first son was adopted. Here I am in Glasgow,

:10:18.:10:23.

Cory was born five weeks ago, I'm coming to see how they are, and to

:10:23.:10:31.

bring a gift for the baby. Isn't he gorgeous?! Can I hold him?

:10:31.:10:36.

Of course. Oh, my goodness me. You were had

:10:36.:10:40.

hands-on dad? Yes. I'm not doing the night-time feeds, to be fair.

:10:40.:10:45.

Tania is doing them. As what planned, when Nikki gave

:10:45.:10:50.

birth to Cory, the biological parents, Tania and Douglas were in

:10:50.:10:56.

the delivery suite. As Cory was born, I stepped in

:10:56.:11:03.

behind and cut his chord. He was wrapped in a towell and we were

:11:03.:11:07.

sobbing, sobbing that we had a living, screaming baby this time.

:11:07.:11:13.

It was unbelievable watching this little person being born.

:11:13.:11:18.

But of course, this was an unusual situation. It was Nikki who carried

:11:18.:11:23.

the baby. To be honest, when he came out, I

:11:23.:11:29.

thought that is not my baby, he looks like Nikki, it is Nikki's

:11:29.:11:33.

baby, probably for the first 24 hours I did not believe he was here

:11:33.:11:38.

and my baby. Tania's nerves were quelled by

:11:38.:11:42.

Cory's resemblence to her other children, including her lost

:11:42.:11:45.

daughter, Lola. It is hard for Tania, she didn't

:11:45.:11:52.

carry him. You wanted to be reassured? I did.

:11:52.:11:57.

Cory has settled in with his brothers, Ian and Josh. The family

:11:57.:12:02.

has stayed in touch with Nikki. They are all firm friends and Nikki

:12:02.:12:06.

has no regrets about the surrogacy. What was it like handing the baby

:12:06.:12:10.

over? There are not really the words to describe how I feel. They

:12:10.:12:14.

don't make words like that. It is special, amazing.

:12:14.:12:19.

You seem measured, is that your defence mechanism? I knew I was

:12:19.:12:27.

doing what I was supposed to do. It was like I ticked off something on

:12:27.:12:31.

my great cosmic to do list. I just carried him for nine months. They

:12:32.:12:38.

are his mum and dad. Cory is happy at home with his

:12:38.:12:43.

genetic parents, but officially Tania is not his mother.

:12:43.:12:52.

We have to see a court report, the reason to visit Nikki to ensure

:12:52.:12:57.

that she is not pressurised into this and to check we have not paid

:12:57.:13:03.

her an enormous amount of money. That is illegal. You only pay the

:13:03.:13:06.

surrogate expenses. What happens when the court is

:13:06.:13:10.

happy? A new birth certificate is issued with Tania's name as the

:13:10.:13:16.

mother and mine as the father. Memories of Lola Rose linger on in

:13:16.:13:22.

the house. The last time I came to Glasgow Lola's nursery had remained

:13:22.:13:25.

untouched since her death. Now it is Cory's room.

:13:25.:13:29.

It is beautiful. It really is. It has been

:13:29.:13:32.

beautiful? Yes. The little rose on the wall in the

:13:32.:13:38.

memory of Lola? Yes, so there is always a presence of her in here.

:13:38.:13:42.

I wonder what it would have been like to have her home, but we have

:13:42.:13:49.

you. Yes! He is ever so strong isn't he? He is very strong.

:13:49.:13:55.

Well, little man. What do you think about this, then? I feel that the

:13:55.:14:01.

family is complete now we have brought him home! Surrogacy is not

:14:01.:14:07.

for everyone, but for Douglas and Tania, young Cory has been the per

:14:07.:14:10.

effect boost after their family's loss.

:14:10.:14:14.

And Tania and Douglas are here now. He is six weeks old. Welcome to the

:14:14.:14:18.

studio. He is gorgeous. Have you had much reaction since we showed

:14:18.:14:23.

the first half of the story? have had texts, e-mails, phone

:14:23.:14:27.

calls. It has been positive.. guessing that life is very

:14:27.:14:33.

different with three? It is. It is fabulous, though, fabulous. We are

:14:33.:14:37.

just loving having the baby and in the house again.

:14:37.:14:40.

Tania, you were open in the film about talking about your concerns

:14:40.:14:44.

about not bonding, this is something that lots of women, if

:14:44.:14:48.

they have those fears they don't openly talk about? I suppose in a

:14:48.:14:52.

way, I look back now and I think that is funny to think for the

:14:52.:14:56.

first probably, the first day or two, I didn't believe he was our

:14:56.:15:02.

baby. I think I had such strong feelings

:15:02.:15:06.

of detachment during the pregnancy because I was frightened of getting

:15:06.:15:14.

emotionally attached to him. So, Nikki was the surrogate? Yes.

:15:14.:15:20.

Nuky is involved in Cory's life -- Nikki is involved in Cory's life?

:15:20.:15:24.

Will that change, will she be there always or will the situation alter?

:15:24.:15:28.

I think that we will always have a relationship with her. I don't see

:15:28.:15:34.

how we couldn't. She has given us this miracle baby. Done a wonderful

:15:34.:15:37.

thing. It is a very self-less thing to do.

:15:37.:15:40.

Completely. Do you worry that her feelings may

:15:40.:15:44.

change? No, I don't think so. Not at all. She has been positive

:15:44.:15:50.

about the fact that Cory is not her baby. Ever.

:15:50.:15:57.

She has four girls, what would she want? Denise, would you consider

:15:57.:16:00.

using a surrogate had you had trouble having children? I would

:16:00.:16:04.

have, certainly. I would not be self-less enough to be a surrogate.

:16:04.:16:10.

I think it is a wonderful thing to do, but I have one of my best

:16:10.:16:14.

school friends has two little girls from a surrogate mum. It has been

:16:14.:16:17.

the best thing that ever happened to her. I would consider that.. I

:16:17.:16:24.

think that people, I was lucky enough to have two children, I

:16:24.:16:28.

can't imagine people going through the awfulness of not having a child.

:16:28.:16:32.

I know you have the two boys, but I would encourage it. Yes.

:16:33.:16:35.

Lovely. Thank you very much to all of you.

:16:35.:16:41.

Thank you for making the journey down from Glasgow. Cory is loving

:16:41.:16:44.

the lights there. He is happy there.

:16:44.:16:48.

Now, violence this week in East Belfast has shown that a few people

:16:48.:16:53.

in Northern Ireland are reluctant to put deep-rooted prejudices

:16:53.:17:00.

behind them, but 60 miles up the road, two sides have been brought

:17:00.:17:06.

together in unity by a bridge. Anita Rani reports from Derry. Here

:17:06.:17:12.

on the Cityside is the largely Catholic community and over there,

:17:12.:17:15.

the eastside, and mainly the Protestant community, but the hope

:17:15.:17:24.

is that the divide between the two will soon be reduced by this... The

:17:24.:17:31.

Peace Bridge. Due to open this weekend, the 310

:17:31.:17:35.

metre Longbridge offers hope of a more integrated city, literally

:17:36.:17:40.

bringing it together. Phil Cunningham, a Catholic has lived

:17:40.:17:46.

his entire life on the westside. There was a summer movement in the

:17:46.:17:51.

early 197 os, the Protestant moved to the east bank and the

:17:51.:17:55.

nationalists on the east bank moved back to the nationalist areas. When

:17:55.:17:59.

the bridge was being built, people were saying that it could help to

:17:59.:18:01.

make the people meet each other in the middle of the bridge.

:18:01.:18:05.

Do you think that it will? There is a lot of peace in the town. It is

:18:05.:18:14.

not as bad as other areas, so this will help the peace bridge -- the

:18:14.:18:18.

Peace Bridge. And on the other side of the bridge,

:18:18.:18:23.

George has similar hopes. How significant is the bridge? It is

:18:23.:18:29.

tremendous. It is like a jigsaw puzzle, this is a very important

:18:29.:18:33.

part of that jigsaw. The piece that you are always looking for in a

:18:33.:18:39.

jigsaw, this is it, hopefully. I'm back on the water to meet one

:18:39.:18:43.

of the people who made the bridge possible, chief engineer, Philip

:18:43.:18:48.

Brown. So, what is the idea behind the bridge? It was not just a link

:18:48.:18:52.

from one side to the other. It was a symbol of the coming together of

:18:52.:18:57.

the two communities. You can see the mass of the Kabuls, coming out,

:18:57.:19:04.

meeting in the middle. It gives -- you can see the mass of cabeles, it

:19:05.:19:09.

gives the idea of hands shaking together to met in the middle.

:19:10.:19:14.

It is a very diplomatic bridge, then? Definitely.

:19:14.:19:18.

So, what do the people of Londonderry think of their new

:19:18.:19:23.

landmark? I think it is a fantastic piece of infrastructure that has

:19:23.:19:28.

come to the city. It is brilliant for the city to grow. What areas do

:19:28.:19:34.

you not go to, this is a change that could make that more available.

:19:34.:19:37.

Although the Derry Peace Bridge is not officially opened until

:19:37.:19:40.

Saturday, we have been granted special access to be the first

:19:40.:19:43.

civilians to cross it. So, walking across the bridge for the first

:19:43.:19:47.

time, how does it feel? It feels lovely.

:19:47.:19:52.

I will let you stay here and let you carry on across your own,

:19:52.:19:55.

George who is living on the otherside is going to meet you

:19:55.:20:00.

halfway. All the best. Hello. How are you? They have done

:20:00.:20:09.

a lovely job. It is fantastic. View. -- snfplt the view.

:20:09.:20:15.

This is a bridge over troubled waters, but it symbolises the

:20:15.:20:19.

future, not the past. Now we have loads to ask you Denise,

:20:19.:20:24.

but first of all a message from a The One Show viewer. Remember the

:20:24.:20:29.

night you offered to make me a male. You walked past the pan rack in the

:20:29.:20:33.

kitchen, that is a good one. thought he was going to say

:20:33.:20:38.

something else, then! So, what is the story? I made no issue of the

:20:38.:20:43.

fact I am not the best cook in the world. I don't like to do it. I see

:20:43.:20:46.

the kitchen as somewhere where you open wine.

:20:46.:20:52.

When we moved into the house about ten years ago, apparently I walked

:20:52.:20:57.

into the kitchen and said, "I'm going to make something to eat

:20:57.:21:03.

tonight, where are the pans?" I had walked past a pan rack that had

:21:03.:21:07.

been there for three weeks, I had never seen it. I have selective

:21:07.:21:12.

sight in the kitchen. That is what he is on about. He is the cook. If

:21:12.:21:21.

I try my two boys do that, "Ah bless" Face! Hopefully he will have

:21:22.:21:25.

supper on the table when you get home! Yes.

:21:26.:21:31.

It is a shame he is not here, you are both starring in a new

:21:31.:21:37.

documentary? Yes. We are doing Don't Cry For Me Maradona. Tim is

:21:37.:21:41.

playing Bob Marshall-Andrews and I'm playing Lady Elsie. We are

:21:41.:21:45.

doing a tribute. Not doing impressions. It is basically a

:21:45.:21:51.

drama that is written, it comes after the wake of the famous

:21:51.:21:55.

Maradona handball incident. That devastated Bob Marshall-Andrews and

:21:55.:22:02.

people all over, but really this play -- devastated Sir Bobby Robson.

:22:02.:22:08.

It takes place on a picnic. It really shows how their love for

:22:08.:22:13.

each other, how she coaxed him out of his depression after it happened.

:22:13.:22:17.

He felt responsible, he thought that he may lose his job. It is a

:22:18.:22:22.

very endearing story. He has been a legend in the north.

:22:22.:22:26.

For us, for everybody. Since Sir Bobby Robson has died, he

:22:26.:22:30.

has become a national treasure? think that the reason is for that,

:22:30.:22:40.
:22:40.:22:41.

Matt, he was one of life's good guys. E -- he never had a bad word

:22:41.:22:51.
:22:51.:22:52.

for anybody. Paul Gascoigne, he was with us when he had died, he was

:22:52.:22:58.

like a father figure to Paul Gascoigne. On this day, our little

:22:58.:23:00.

boy luckily, got to meet him before he died.

:23:00.:23:04.

They were a devoted couple? Yes. Totally.

:23:05.:23:09.

We have a clip from Sports Personality of the Year Award, he

:23:09.:23:15.

speaks to wonderfulally about Elsie. I have to thank my wife, Elsie, who

:23:15.:23:22.

stuck with me for about 52 years, without her I wouldn't be what I

:23:22.:23:30.

am... APPLAUSE . Sir Bobby Robson there. That was

:23:30.:23:34.

2007. She's been very active in the making of this drama. It was

:23:34.:23:38.

important to me. Was it difficult with her being so

:23:38.:23:42.

close to him and you playing her? Only when I knew that she said that

:23:42.:23:46.

she loved the piece. It is a little slice of their life. It was on

:23:46.:23:52.

Tuesday and it is on again on Sunday night at 6.00pm. There you

:23:52.:23:57.

are, Radio 5 Live. Now, nothing says nature more than the sound of

:23:57.:24:01.

bird song, but throw in a pile of squawking gulls, there is another

:24:01.:24:05.

story. They have a bit of a bad reputation, especially when they

:24:05.:24:08.

pinch your chips irbgs like this one in Bridlington Harbour. There

:24:08.:24:16.

he is. Mike Dilger has met some people in

:24:16.:24:20.

Devon who are not so keen on sea gulls either.

:24:20.:24:25.

Walking down a High Street we are used to be watched by CCTV, but on

:24:25.:24:30.

this street, there are more pairs of eyes watching than you may

:24:30.:24:36.

realise. A menace has been growing and the problems have been making

:24:36.:24:41.

headline news. So, what happened to make the gulls turn nasty. For the

:24:41.:24:45.

vast majority of the year humans and gulls live cheek by bake

:24:45.:24:49.

without a problem. However, during the breeding season, all of that

:24:49.:24:55.

changes. While they nest, the gulls become extremely protective of

:24:55.:25:00.

their young. This is the one time of the year when coexisting with

:25:00.:25:03.

the humans it can have dangerous consequences.

:25:03.:25:09.

The sea gulls in June and July are a nightmare. If there is food, they

:25:09.:25:12.

are aggressive. I don't allow them to get too close.

:25:12.:25:18.

With a wing span of up to five feet, an adult sea gull is a force to be

:25:18.:25:24.

reckoned with. So what can be done? The worst cases, the councils are

:25:24.:25:28.

able to destroy the gull nest, but only when they are a threat to

:25:28.:25:35.

safety. One man to help is professional pest controller, Andy

:25:35.:25:39.

Payne. Is it common that people are being attacked? Yes, there are

:25:39.:25:43.

gulls doing a lot of damage to properties. They are attacking

:25:43.:25:45.

children, pets, elderly people as well.

:25:46.:25:51.

What can you do? If we have gulls nesting on the roof then we look at

:25:51.:25:55.

whether the client is being attacked, visit rs to the property

:25:55.:25:59.

are being attacked, if that is the case we can remove the nest. Other

:25:59.:26:04.

than that we have to wait until the young have fledged the nest before

:26:04.:26:13.

we carry out any investigations. Removing nests or harming the gulls

:26:13.:26:18.

can land you with a heavy fine or even a prison sentence. It is

:26:18.:26:23.

illegal for me to even step foot on a roof with a suspected gull nest,

:26:23.:26:27.

so Andy has agreed to take a camera. We are going up there to see what

:26:27.:26:32.

the situation is up there, to look at seeing what we can do for them.

:26:32.:26:36.

Unfortunately for the family of this house, Andy finds a nest, the

:26:36.:26:40.

gulls may be a nuisance, but there is no clear danger to the public

:26:40.:26:45.

health. So like many of the cases, the family below have to put up

:26:45.:26:49.

with their noisy neighbours, but later in the year he can return to

:26:49.:26:53.

make the roof gull-proof. In some cases there is really no solution

:26:53.:26:59.

but to keep an eye on the sky until after the breeding season, but many

:26:59.:27:05.

gulls cause a nuisance all year- round by stealing food and raiding

:27:05.:27:10.

rubbish. The RSPB believe that changing the way that we live is

:27:10.:27:15.

the way to tackle the birds' yorb behaviour.

:27:15.:27:19.

The gulls were not nesting on the roofs but were prompted to because

:27:19.:27:25.

of the waste. We did not waste food back in the day. That changed. Then

:27:25.:27:30.

there were landfill sights to deal with this. So, lots of food around.

:27:30.:27:34.

Then the other thing is of course, if you look around the towns, all

:27:34.:27:41.

you can see with a gull's eye is a perfect nesting space it is a flat

:27:41.:27:45.

roof with shingle on. No wonder the gulls like them it is

:27:45.:27:51.

like a beach! The herring gull is decreasing in number in There is no

:27:51.:27:58.

denying that they are increasing -- the herring gull is decreasing in

:27:58.:28:01.

number? There is no denying that they are. So that is the reason

:28:01.:28:05.

that they are listed. The reason for the decline is that

:28:05.:28:12.

there are far fewer fishing waters in the -- vessels in the waters. So

:28:12.:28:16.

it is our changing habits that have pushed them away from the coasts to

:28:16.:28:22.

attract them to the towns. They are the ultimate opportunists, taking

:28:22.:28:25.

advantage of a world we have created.

:28:25.:28:32.

There you go, did you know that sea gulls can live for up to 40 years?

:28:32.:28:39.

40 years too long! I don't mean that! Obviously you not a fan! What

:28:39.:28:46.

about you, Denise? I don't like the idea of birds in the -- near me. I

:28:46.:28:55.

don't mind them from a distance. I have been attacked by a sea gull

:28:55.:29:02.

from behind. No, not fans of a sea gull.

:29:02.:29:08.

Only if they poo on your head. Then that is lucky.

:29:08.:29:14.

Thank you very much for coming along, you can listen to Tim and

:29:14.:29:17.

Denise in Don't Cry For Me Maradona on Radio 5 Live this Sunday at

:29:17.:29:21.
