Hello and welcome to a Halloween themed One Show with | :00:18. | :00:23.
Mwoo-ha-ha-ha-ha-att Baker. And Aaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhh!...lex Jones. | :00:24. | :00:30.
Joining us for our Halloween special is comedian and star of The Indian | :00:31. | :00:35.
Doctor and Meet The Kumars, it is Sanjeev Askar! -- Sanjeev Bhaskar! | :00:36. | :00:48.
Happy Halloween, and happy birthday! Ugh, yes! You are | :00:49. | :01:00.
obviously delighted about it. That is the applause that has well done | :01:01. | :01:03.
for walking over here and sitting down. Was it a good day? It has been | :01:04. | :01:10.
fine. My son, who is seven, got me up this morning and said, you are | :01:11. | :01:15.
not that old. I said, thank you . then he repeated it through the day, | :01:16. | :01:19.
and it got to the point where I started to doubt him. Is your Centre | :01:20. | :01:28.
Court treating tonight? He is, dressed as a zombie, with a severed | :01:29. | :01:37.
leg. Not a real one. Did you help him with a bottle of tomato ketchup? | :01:38. | :01:42.
We did not want to use him as bait. Well, we want to see your pictures | :01:43. | :01:47.
tonight if you are dressed up and going out to trick or treating or | :01:48. | :01:51.
having a fancy dress party. And if you are staying in and not answering | :01:52. | :01:57.
the door, we would like to see your pictures, too. Princess Michael of | :01:58. | :02:04.
Kent recently said that she and her husband felt fresher after sleeping | :02:05. | :02:09.
in separate bedrooms, all quarters, as she put it. Many of us may find | :02:10. | :02:14.
it hard to sleep with bonfire night and Halloween on the horizon, but | :02:15. | :02:18.
which do you prefer? So, does sleeping solo spell the end | :02:19. | :02:23.
of a relationship, or does it mean marital Bliss? We took to the | :02:24. | :02:32.
streets to find out. So, do you think sleeping in separate bedrooms | :02:33. | :02:34.
would spell the end of a relationship? It probably signifies | :02:35. | :02:41.
the end of romance. You get better sleep when you are alone? Yeah. It | :02:42. | :02:47.
is more the cuddling. I get very hot. All men do. We have been | :02:48. | :02:53.
married to seven years. The only time we stopped sleeping in the same | :02:54. | :02:57.
bed was if one of us had a really bad cough or cold, and it was | :02:58. | :03:03.
keeping the other awake. We sleep better together. Would you not like | :03:04. | :03:08.
to sleep on your own? It would not bother me. It is just about sleep, | :03:09. | :03:18.
isn't it? I would love some sleep, yes! We share a house with six or | :03:19. | :03:27.
seven people. When you go to bed, it is spending time together. Would you | :03:28. | :03:34.
find it difficult to sleep alone? Yes. She can't sleep if I am working | :03:35. | :03:38.
nights. She needs a couple to get off to sleep. So if your girlfriend | :03:39. | :03:44.
said, I am thinking about sleeping in the spare room, you would think, | :03:45. | :03:52.
what? Yeah. Doesn't spell the end of a relationship if you sleep | :03:53. | :03:56.
separately? I love you enough to sleep in another room so that you | :03:57. | :04:11.
get a good night's sleep! That looks comfy. There is | :04:12. | :04:17.
scientific research in this. Apparently, women put on weight if | :04:18. | :04:20.
they do not sleep enough, and men become more stupid. Does that | :04:21. | :04:26.
surprise you? Both of those things happened to me! I have got in touch | :04:27. | :04:34.
with my feminine side, obviously. The thing about men does not | :04:35. | :04:38.
surprise me, that lack of sleep, I thought it made everyone stupid. Do | :04:39. | :04:44.
you have a double bed or separate beds? When I am on a plane, I like | :04:45. | :04:50.
to sleep alone. And in hospital, I like a single bed. But at home, we | :04:51. | :04:57.
have double beds. On that theme of hospitals and doctors, the third | :04:58. | :05:03.
series of The Indian Doctor is back. This is you settling into the Welsh | :05:04. | :05:10.
valleys. The first series had a bad colliery miners, then smallpox in | :05:11. | :05:14.
the second series. The owners of a coal mine were being a right pain in | :05:15. | :05:19.
the first series. Then you had the smallpox epidemic. What happens in | :05:20. | :05:24.
the third? We have gone to a light at tone. With smallpox, there are | :05:25. | :05:28.
not many jokes you can do without looking really bad. So it is more | :05:29. | :05:36.
about the fear of progress. A lot of small towns in the 60s had not | :05:37. | :05:40.
caught up. They were still stuck at the end of the 50s. So a couple of | :05:41. | :05:50.
brothers come back with a promise of the excitement of the 60s and a new | :05:51. | :05:55.
town, with indoor toilets and washing machine is and central | :05:56. | :05:59.
heating. The series is about people being stuck in their ways and not | :06:00. | :06:03.
being able to move on. My character can't move on because he can't | :06:04. | :06:08.
discuss the future or his ambitions or particularly having a family. | :06:09. | :06:13.
Let's have a look at you meeting the two conniving brothers in Monday's | :06:14. | :06:21.
episode. Good morning. I was not sure I got the time right. You were | :06:22. | :06:27.
expecting me? Yes, to show me the house. Estate agents, no? IC. No, we | :06:28. | :06:34.
are the owners. I am Basil, and this is my brother. Doctor Prem Sharma. | :06:35. | :06:41.
What a coincidence. My brother is a doctor also. The local GP, I | :06:42. | :06:47.
presume? I am sure you will get along famously. It is beautifully | :06:48. | :06:54.
shot, box office daytime telly. Thank you. What is great is that the | :06:55. | :07:06.
crews in Wales are all confident of the back of the success of Doctor | :07:07. | :07:09.
Who and Sherlock, and they have all worked with each other for ages. So | :07:10. | :07:14.
there is a great, collegiate atmosphere onset. And now all warm | :07:15. | :07:20.
and friendly. You said lots of the actors you work with our fluent | :07:21. | :07:24.
Welsh speakers. You said they are more emotional than other actors you | :07:25. | :07:29.
have worked with? Are you going to hit me in a minute? Sounds like a | :07:30. | :07:36.
loaded question. It was a compliment! Absolutely. As opposed | :07:37. | :07:45.
to is Celtic blood. -- I suppose it is Celtic blood. It is about having | :07:46. | :07:49.
an opinion and being able to share it. In our land, it would be the | :07:50. | :07:52.
idea of getting together and talking. That still seems very | :07:53. | :07:58.
vibrant in Wales and less so in parts of England. The Indian Doctor | :07:59. | :08:03.
is on every day next week on BBC One at 2:15pm. Now, the story of a woman | :08:04. | :08:08.
who became headline news for her uncanny ability to photograph the | :08:09. | :08:12.
spirits of the dead. But it turned out to be a trick, so why worse | :08:13. | :08:22.
people so quick to fall for it? The early 1900s were a golden age of | :08:23. | :08:26.
spiritualism, the belief that the dead reside in a spirit world around | :08:27. | :08:33.
us. In 1924, there was one bizarre event that catapulted spiritualism | :08:34. | :08:37.
into the headlines. And it happened right here on Whitehall. It was the | :08:38. | :08:43.
11th of November, 1924, remembrance day. The First World War had ended | :08:44. | :08:47.
six years earlier and the newly built cenotaph had become a focus of | :08:48. | :08:52.
national mourning. Whilst the crowds gathered, a small, middle-aged woman | :08:53. | :08:59.
stood here and took some photos of the scene. At that time, the | :09:00. | :09:03.
cenotaph was not covered in scaffolding and plastic. Here are | :09:04. | :09:07.
the photos. There is the cenotaph and the crowds, but what is all | :09:08. | :09:14.
this? Would it be a host of spirits? The voters claimed to show the faces | :09:15. | :09:21.
of Britain's war dead. They became big news. Popular tabloid the daily | :09:22. | :09:28.
sketch paid money to publish the images, because by this point, the | :09:29. | :09:31.
mysterious lady photographer was making quite a name for herself. She | :09:32. | :09:36.
was one of Britain's leading spirit photographers. She had an unusual | :09:37. | :09:40.
talent for persuading spirits to reveal themselves on camera. To find | :09:41. | :09:44.
out how this most unlikely line of work developed, I have come to the | :09:45. | :09:49.
college of psychic studies. People in the 1920s would sit with a spirit | :09:50. | :09:55.
photographer, hoping for a photograph which had an image of | :09:56. | :09:58.
their loved ones, and then they would put them in the album. So this | :09:59. | :10:04.
is the lady herself? She was a cleaning lady in north London. Those | :10:05. | :10:08.
who knew her said she was a mild, inoffensive woman. How did she | :10:09. | :10:14.
become involved with spiritualism? She was told at a spiritualist | :10:15. | :10:17.
meeting that she had the capacity to be a spirit photography medium. You | :10:18. | :10:24.
would have paid her to do one of these sessions? That is right, and | :10:25. | :10:28.
it was probably quite a reasonable amount of money, especially compared | :10:29. | :10:35.
to the earnings of a cleaning lady. But not everyone was convinced. Ada | :10:36. | :10:40.
Dean was in fact humiliated by the newspaper which had made her a | :10:41. | :10:43.
star. The public had noticed that her cenotaph spirits bore an uncanny | :10:44. | :10:49.
resemblance to sports stars of the day, footballers, professional | :10:50. | :10:54.
boxers, all of whom were very much alive. The former cleaning lady had | :10:55. | :10:57.
been rumbled, but she maintained that the photos were genuine. Her | :10:58. | :11:03.
supporters rallied to her defence, unearthing many people who claimed | :11:04. | :11:07.
the spirits did resemble their lost loved ones. To put the matter to | :11:08. | :11:11.
bed, I have come to the camera club in London to attend my own spirit | :11:12. | :11:17.
photography. She used a camera that would take glass plates, which went | :11:18. | :11:25.
out of use 50 years ago, and we will try and reproduce it on film. This | :11:26. | :11:30.
1970s camera may be streets ahead of Ada Dean's, but film is perfect to | :11:31. | :11:34.
illustrate the trick coming now routine, but then the height of | :11:35. | :11:40.
sophisticated photographic fakery. I have never done this before. It | :11:41. | :11:48.
might be fun. I feel a little man-like. You don't look anything | :11:49. | :11:54.
like a nun! Let's get you suitably spirit looking. Now for the trick. | :11:55. | :11:58.
By removing the film canister while the film is being wound on, it is | :11:59. | :12:02.
possible to capture two images on the same piece of film. Here I am. | :12:03. | :12:17.
Let's see how that has turned out. We hope an image will appear. Oh, | :12:18. | :12:23.
yes. There is a ghostly image. So that's how she did it. You look very | :12:24. | :12:33.
good as a ghost. Not a bad first effort at spirit photography, but we | :12:34. | :12:38.
have conjured up just one spirit. You can only imagine the lengths Ada | :12:39. | :12:42.
Dean must have gone to to create her famous scene at the cenotaph. | :12:43. | :12:47.
Perhaps the truth is not the most important thing. The fascinating | :12:48. | :12:50.
thing is that masses of people believed in Ada Dean. Back in the | :12:51. | :12:55.
1920s, after the trauma of the great War, Britain was ready to believe. I | :12:56. | :13:02.
am still a believer. Even after all that. It would be nice to think she | :13:03. | :13:15.
did that. Do you believe? In? Anyway, as we mentioned, your other | :13:16. | :13:20.
award-winning series is back, The Kumars, but you have moved to number | :13:21. | :13:25.
42 and you have changed broadcaster. Yes, we have moved to Sky one. And | :13:26. | :13:31.
we have moved home. We were in a nice house in Wembley, and the | :13:32. | :13:35.
family have come upon hard times, hit by the recession. We are now in | :13:36. | :13:40.
a flat above a shop in Hounslow in west London. Is it your shop | :13:41. | :13:46.
downstairs? We lease it from a landlady who is now part of the show | :13:47. | :13:49.
as a new character. She has a fantastic past. She has over 4000 | :13:50. | :14:00.
IMDB credits to her name. Over 2000 of them are a woman in a coma, but | :14:01. | :14:04.
nevertheless, she thinks she is a star. Speaking of the past, let's | :14:05. | :14:08.
see the last time you played Sanjeev, with your real wife playing | :14:09. | :14:13.
the grand. I am sitting next to my fantasy partner. Me, to! But you are | :14:14. | :14:30.
not, Natasha. Wait a minute! Natasha, is Sanjeev your ideal | :14:31. | :14:36.
partner? Um... On presentation of bank details, I might consider it if | :14:37. | :14:46.
I was desperate. Cutting! How is grand? She is very | :14:47. | :14:54.
good. She has not aged a bit. It is such a great series. Why did the BBC | :14:55. | :15:00.
let it go? You would have to ask whoever that person is. I did bring | :15:01. | :15:07.
it to the BBC as a new version, but nobody called me back. So it is | :15:08. | :15:11.
still the same setup, where you interview people? You don't know who | :15:12. | :15:16.
your guests are? Not at this stage. It would be great to get someone | :15:17. | :15:22.
like the Pope, or the Dalai Lama. If the Pope watches films, it would be | :15:23. | :15:28.
great to find out what he is into, what he thought of Monsters | :15:29. | :15:32.
University. Maybe he would be into zero fear and -- your new movie. I | :15:33. | :15:43.
am in it very briefly. I play a doctor. I'm getting typecast. I am | :15:44. | :15:50.
the Indian who plays them. It is Terry Gilliam, who I am a huge fan | :15:51. | :15:57.
of from Monty Python onwards. Fabulous caste. We flew into Romania | :15:58. | :16:00.
for two days with people like Matt Damon and Ben Whishaw. When can we | :16:01. | :16:10.
see this? You can come round later. But you did not mean it that way. On | :16:11. | :16:22.
the big screen. You are Welsh! You are passionate! Over the next week | :16:23. | :16:34.
we are introducing new to the members of Team Rickshaw. Each rider | :16:35. | :16:41.
has their own reason for putting themselves through this huge | :16:42. | :16:45.
challenge of riding 700 miles up all four Children in Need. Coming up is | :16:46. | :16:50.
Daniel's story. And if you would like to donate to the challenge, the | :16:51. | :16:53.
numbers coming up. I am Daniel Bailey. I'm a team. I am | :16:54. | :17:10.
training for a massive challenge for Children in Need. My uncle's farm is | :17:11. | :17:18.
a special place. I look after the animals. I fetch the cows in for the | :17:19. | :17:29.
milking. The animals have been a big help. In my recovery. I was a normal | :17:30. | :17:42.
teenager. I played Ascot all, for all. I was a happy kid. I was | :17:43. | :17:49.
confident. I would take on whatever it's me. Which I am glad about now. | :17:50. | :17:57.
Because it did take me out for quite a while. It was Christmas Eve and he | :17:58. | :18:04.
just did not feel very well. We went to see a doctor out of hours. He did | :18:05. | :18:10.
not improve so on New Year's Eve he began to hallucinate. We called | :18:11. | :18:17.
999. And the next thing he was on a trolley, they said he had | :18:18. | :18:24.
meningitis. I was 14 and I was taken into hospital. I was there for my | :18:25. | :18:32.
15th birthday. Daniel has had meningitis, which has left him with | :18:33. | :18:38.
balance -- balance problems and ADHD. He has had a lot of brain | :18:39. | :18:43.
damage. It is like having a toddler again. I had to learn everything | :18:44. | :18:50.
twice, eating and drinking, walking, running. Everything. I felt useless. | :18:51. | :19:00.
I did get quite bad emotionally at one stage. It was really hard | :19:01. | :19:06.
learning to walk again. It was painful. It has just had such a big | :19:07. | :19:20.
impact on us. Without the charity umbrella, I did not know what | :19:21. | :19:25.
services were available what help was out there for Daniel. It | :19:26. | :19:30.
benefits so many people. Because you do not have a clue where to turn. | :19:31. | :19:39.
The funding we receive from Children in Need has allowed us to make a | :19:40. | :19:46.
difference to young people like Daniel and his friends who come | :19:47. | :19:54.
along. Umbrella has meant that I can go out | :19:55. | :20:02.
and be like a normal teenager, with independence. I was quite scared at | :20:03. | :20:08.
the start. But they all seemed really quite nice. I have made loads | :20:09. | :20:16.
of new friends. It has changed my life for ever. Are you excited about | :20:17. | :20:26.
the challenge? I cannot wait. We are so proud of you. I just cannot wait | :20:27. | :20:38.
to get to the finish! Come on, everyone. Support this amazing event | :20:39. | :20:44.
for Children in Need. Help people like me. Thank you to Daniel. And of | :20:45. | :20:53.
course good luck. We will hear more about the other members of team | :20:54. | :20:58.
rickshaw next week. Here is a reminder of how you can support the | :20:59. | :21:04.
Rexall dashed the rickshaw challenge. Text messages will cost | :21:05. | :21:13.
?5 plus your standard network charge. ?5 will go to Children in | :21:14. | :21:20.
Need. For the full terms and conditions visit the website. While | :21:21. | :21:26.
your text in you can also let us know if you have any fund raising | :21:27. | :21:31.
events planned of your own. And if they are close to the root we might | :21:32. | :21:37.
pop by and say hello. Now here is Gloria with a Halloween nightmare | :21:38. | :21:43.
for two unhappy home owners. As any home owner knows, it is not easy or | :21:44. | :21:48.
cheap to maintain a property. There are always unexpected costs. And | :21:49. | :21:55.
eventually you are going to have to call in the experts. When you do | :21:56. | :22:00.
have every right to expect value for money and a job well done. Maurice | :22:01. | :22:06.
Short from Kent and Laurie Patel were impressed by the promises of a | :22:07. | :22:12.
product called Wallshield. It promised a revolutionary paint job | :22:13. | :22:17.
on the outside of their houses, guaranteed for 15 years. So you work | :22:18. | :22:23.
attract his wide and 15 year guarantee. None of us are getting | :22:24. | :22:28.
any younger and I cannot get up to paint walls now. It ended up costing | :22:29. | :22:37.
11,000 ?640. Despite the cost, initially Maurice Short was | :22:38. | :22:41.
delighted. But after a while the paint began to crack and bubble. | :22:42. | :22:49.
Look at this, for example. It just shows how soft it is. How did you | :22:50. | :22:54.
feel when you saw this happening? Horrified. I did not know what we | :22:55. | :23:00.
were going to do. Laurie paid ?13,000 for his work. That lasted | :23:01. | :23:05.
longer but less than halfway through the guarantee, it also started to | :23:06. | :23:12.
come off. This is one area where Reid peeled off. Sheets of it. The | :23:13. | :23:24.
problem was said to be with the rendering and not with the paint. | :23:25. | :23:32.
This is Sandy. I expect it contains sand but it should also have a | :23:33. | :23:38.
cement or resident in it to bind the sand together. It will not stick to | :23:39. | :23:44.
the wall or to the paint. So I suspect this will all come off. So | :23:45. | :23:49.
thumbs down from the surveyor. But what about that 15 year guarantee? | :23:50. | :23:59.
Within 18 months, it all started to bubble again after they did come | :24:00. | :24:06.
back. Since then his contacts with the company have had no response. | :24:07. | :24:13.
Eventually we had a letter from the company of liquidators. It said the | :24:14. | :24:18.
company had gone into liquidation and was no longer able to help. And | :24:19. | :24:25.
in your case? I've got a letter saying they had gone into | :24:26. | :24:29.
liquidation and that the guarantee was worthless. Worthless it was. The | :24:30. | :24:36.
company was no more so Morris was surprised to receive another flyer | :24:37. | :24:41.
from the company also advertising the same product and using the same | :24:42. | :24:46.
logo as before. But technically it was not the same company. The name | :24:47. | :24:51.
was slightly different. It turns out that Wallshield comes in many | :24:52. | :24:58.
shades. Wallshield Ltd. Wallshield company. The Wallshield group. It | :24:59. | :25:05.
turns out that over the years there have been numerous companies trading | :25:06. | :25:09.
on to the Wallshield name. And if you look at the official records for | :25:10. | :25:13.
these companies, there is one name that keeps cropping up. Direct your | :25:14. | :25:22.
Mike Eliasson. When one company has gone into liquidation, using the | :25:23. | :25:29.
name can be illegal. But in many cases it is not. And in the case of | :25:30. | :25:33.
Wallshield, we do not have enough evidence to say either way. It is | :25:34. | :25:39.
legally complicated. You need to look at whether the director has set | :25:40. | :25:47.
up a complete scam. You can investigate a company in | :25:48. | :25:51.
liquidation. We investigate the behaviour of the director and take | :25:52. | :25:57.
into account complaints made. If people have been behaving badly and | :25:58. | :26:02.
we get evidence as to that, we can take them to court and stop them | :26:03. | :26:05.
from acting as management of the company in the future. Unfortunately | :26:06. | :26:11.
reporting this is all that can be done. It might at least top | :26:12. | :26:17.
Wallshield from doing it again. I am extremely angry especially because | :26:18. | :26:22.
those directors of that company have just shut up shop and we are left | :26:23. | :26:30.
high and dry. An 11 thousand pounds down. | :26:31. | :26:36.
Well we have heard at length from Wallshield. They say their product | :26:37. | :26:41.
has been applied to thousands of companies for over 30 years and they | :26:42. | :26:44.
had numerous satisfied and repeat customers. The reason for creating a | :26:45. | :26:49.
number of companies was to stop others trading under their name. | :26:50. | :26:56.
They say they went into liquidation for genuine reasons because of the | :26:57. | :27:00.
economic downturn. Wallshield coating Ltd has given an undertaking | :27:01. | :27:06.
to repay its creditors in full. They say they are unaware of any | :27:07. | :27:11.
complaints put forward by Laurie. For Maurice Short, they blame his | :27:12. | :27:18.
problems on a leaking roof. But that is news to him, he says his roof | :27:19. | :27:23.
does not leak. Earlier we asked you to send us pictures if you are going | :27:24. | :27:29.
trick or treating or if you are pretending that you are not in. So | :27:30. | :27:35.
we have had a lot of trick and treating photographs. Just about to | :27:36. | :27:46.
go out there. Darcy and Shannon out trick and treating. This is Georgie | :27:47. | :27:58.
and Erika in Norfolk. This is Charlie and Sophie dressed up for | :27:59. | :28:05.
Halloween. And this is jaded and Sophie. Well we did ask for some | :28:06. | :28:13.
people pretending not to be in, but we had not had any photographs. And | :28:14. | :28:19.
a lot of people are wondering what my jumper says. It says Boo! I did | :28:20. | :28:35.
wonder! We did say you are celebrating a birthday tonight. So | :28:36. | :28:39.
we could not let you leave without a birthday cake. Have you seen this? | :28:40. | :28:48.
It is a marvellous creation. It is huge. It is quite remarkable. Igor, | :28:49. | :29:04.
where are you going? ! We cannot even get into it. Thanks ever so | :29:05. | :29:11.
much for your company this evening and on your birthday as well. We | :29:12. | :29:16.
hope you have a super night. The Indian Doctor is on every day next | :29:17. | :29:21.
week on BBC One at 2:15pm. Chris and I are back tomorrow, live at seven. | :29:22. | :29:26.
Goodbye! Happy Halloween! | :29:27. | :29:28. |
