Hi, I'm George Lewis. Welcome to Extra Gear.

0:00:020:00:04

What a great show we have in store for you tonight.

0:00:040:00:06

We show you how to keep up with a DB11

0:00:060:00:08

screaming down the Dunsfold runway.

0:00:080:00:10

We find out where Rory's love of the hatchback started.

0:00:120:00:14

My first-ever car was in 1978 Fiesta.

0:00:140:00:18

Sabine drops by to tell us how much she enjoyed

0:00:180:00:21

scaring the crap out of Rory on the Green Hill.

0:00:210:00:24

So much power.

0:00:240:00:26

And Chris takes the driver's seat in our reasonably fast car

0:00:260:00:30

and shows us what it can really do.

0:00:300:00:32

That's right, this is Extra Gear.

0:00:320:00:35

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:00:350:00:37

So, tonight may have featured secret agent Le Bond

0:00:580:01:02

and the terrifyingly badly dressed Doctor No Hair,

0:01:020:01:05

but the real star of the show was the DB11.

0:01:050:01:08

With a top speed of 200mph,

0:01:080:01:10

it's definitely more than just a pretty face.

0:01:100:01:13

And it is a very pretty face.

0:01:130:01:15

But when a car is travelling that fast, how do you film it?

0:01:150:01:19

Hello, I'm Alex Renton, series editor of Top Gear.

0:01:260:01:30

We've got our first day of the new series down at Dunsfold.

0:01:300:01:34

It's good to be home.

0:01:340:01:36

We're testing the Aston Martin DB11 with Matt LeBlanc.

0:01:360:01:40

So, everyone's back, everyone's raring to go.

0:01:400:01:43

The idea of the kit we've got here

0:01:510:01:53

is just to track the fast DB11

0:01:530:01:56

and try to get some very fast tracking shots.

0:01:560:01:58

Normally, we have a cameraman

0:01:580:02:00

in the back of the car, and when he's in the back of the car,

0:02:000:02:03

we can only go quite slow speeds.

0:02:030:02:06

And it doesn't show fast cars at their best.

0:02:060:02:09

So, today we've got ourselves a nice fast car, this R8,

0:02:100:02:13

and we've got a pan-and-tilt head with zoom capabilities

0:02:130:02:16

on the front edge of this

0:02:160:02:18

and a low-level to try and accentuate the speed.

0:02:180:02:21

So, by using this rig,

0:02:210:02:23

we can pan, tilt, zoom and focus as we're travelling.

0:02:230:02:26

So the two cars can jockey for position

0:02:260:02:29

and capture some very interesting high-speed shots.

0:02:290:02:32

We got covered in a lot of rubber then.

0:03:170:03:19

-Yeah, it was good fun, that.

-Yeah.

0:03:200:03:23

Cameras, cut.

0:03:230:03:24

Now, let's bring on two men

0:03:250:03:27

that are all too familiar with filming fast cars.

0:03:270:03:30

It's Chris and Rory.

0:03:300:03:31

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:03:310:03:34

I loved that film because you watch this amazing driving footage,

0:03:400:03:45

but you don't really think about it, but obviously there's

0:03:450:03:47

going to be another car that's got to go equally as fast to film it.

0:03:470:03:52

-How clever you are.

-Yes! I worked it out.

0:03:520:03:54

But, the DB11, they used an R8.

0:03:540:03:58

Why's that the car of choice, Chris?

0:03:580:04:00

I think it's a very clever car because it's four-wheel drive.

0:04:000:04:03

The Aston is two-wheel drive, so it's got a traction advantage,

0:04:030:04:06

which means, when you're following close,

0:04:060:04:08

you really need a faster car than the car you're following.

0:04:080:04:11

Which is a big ask when you've got a 600 horsepower Aston Martin.

0:04:110:04:14

So the car's got the performance, it's got the traction,

0:04:140:04:17

its handling is fantastic, we know that.

0:04:170:04:19

But of course the whole thing's pointless

0:04:190:04:21

-unless you've got a great crew working with the car.

-Yes.

0:04:210:04:24

Yeah, you must have a specialist crew because there's so many things

0:04:240:04:28

they've got to handle really delicately

0:04:280:04:30

cos there's the speed, the distance, the presenters.

0:04:300:04:32

Yeah, absolutely. We saw in the video

0:04:320:04:34

that one of our mini-cam specialists,

0:04:340:04:36

he has to spend so much time making sure

0:04:360:04:38

everything is perfectly secured to the car,

0:04:380:04:40

cos if you're going 180mph and something flies off,

0:04:400:04:43

A, the camera is broken,

0:04:430:04:45

and B, that turns into a high-speed projectile.

0:04:450:04:47

You've got to factor in things like

0:04:470:04:50

when they rig is on the front of the car,

0:04:500:04:52

it becomes a longer car or a wider car,

0:04:520:04:55

depending on how you mount it.

0:04:550:04:56

Also, the aerodynamics of the car change as well.

0:04:560:04:59

So if you're doing 180mph, you've got to factor in

0:04:590:05:02

the difference in handling that that kit provides to the car.

0:05:020:05:06

So they're tuned into it, they're dialled into it,

0:05:060:05:08

they understand how the car is going to react.

0:05:080:05:10

They understand how the star car driver is going to react

0:05:100:05:13

-in every given situation.

-When you get it right, it's a great feeling.

0:05:130:05:16

Because it is quite high-risk stuff. And it's not CGI.

0:05:160:05:19

When you watch the current films with computer generated stuff,

0:05:190:05:22

I love the fact we go out there and do it properly and it looks better.

0:05:220:05:25

Those shots, close cropped onto that Aston wheel, how good do they look?

0:05:250:05:28

That's real.

0:05:280:05:29

Bits of tyre flying off, that's really visceral, exciting stuff.

0:05:290:05:33

The Aston looked amazing, and this is an important car.

0:05:330:05:36

Aston Martin say that this is the most important car

0:05:360:05:39

in their 100-year history.

0:05:390:05:41

Do you agree with that?

0:05:410:05:42

I think car companies always say that. Don't they always say that?

0:05:420:05:47

The turbo engine, that's a big move. Are you for it?

0:05:470:05:51

I think, for this application, this is a fast GT car,

0:05:510:05:53

it's not an out-and-out sports car.

0:05:530:05:55

So it's more of a cruiser than it is a kind of scalpel.

0:05:550:05:58

So I think, for this, it works.

0:05:580:06:00

It's got good torque, works well with the transmission, so I'm a fan.

0:06:000:06:03

But we know it's only going one way, and it's turbo-charging all the way,

0:06:030:06:06

which ultimately I think is a shame. But in this application, it works.

0:06:060:06:10

-Story?

-It's not a shame at all.

0:06:100:06:13

Turbo-charging brings benefits.

0:06:130:06:15

-There's no drawback to turbo-charging.

-We're talking about engines, not your hairdryer.

0:06:150:06:19

Turbo-charging only brings benefits, there's no drawbacks whatsoever.

0:06:190:06:22

You start with a massive V12 engine,

0:06:220:06:24

you add a couple of turbochargers to it, and suddenly, more power.

0:06:240:06:28

Also you get the benefit of increased efficiency,

0:06:280:06:30

so the car uses less petrol.

0:06:300:06:32

Have you ever driven a naturally aspirated Aston?

0:06:320:06:35

You watch the petrol needle and it just drops

0:06:350:06:37

with every application of your right foot.

0:06:370:06:39

Whereas with this thing...

0:06:390:06:40

It drops with every application of your right foot.

0:06:400:06:43

But slightly, slightly slower than it would normally.

0:06:430:06:46

I'm going to ask you about a phrase you just said then.

0:06:460:06:48

There are no downsides to turbo-charging.

0:06:480:06:50

-Not if it's done right.

-Anyone here disagree with Rory Reid?

0:06:500:06:53

-Turbo lag.

-Yes, you see? Turbo lag.

0:06:530:06:56

Two turbos, one going off early, one going off late,

0:06:560:06:59

-no turbo lag.

-Going off?

-Fact.

0:06:590:07:02

It's the technical...description. Firing.

0:07:020:07:05

Is that what they say?

0:07:050:07:07

We saw you driving a Mercedes S63.

0:07:070:07:10

And can I just say, by the way,

0:07:100:07:12

what an amazing performance from Chris as the evil villain.

0:07:120:07:16

It was the role he was born to play.

0:07:170:07:20

Absolutely haunting. Oh, there it is.

0:07:200:07:23

So, they hijacked me three hours before we went to shoot that.

0:07:230:07:26

They said this is what you're wearing. I mean, look at it!

0:07:260:07:28

It was made of material that was one worse than polyester.

0:07:280:07:31

It would just remove skin from your neck.

0:07:310:07:34

-The car, that Mercedes, is just fantastic.

-Yeah.

0:07:340:07:38

But what it doesn't do, the only thing it doesn't do,

0:07:380:07:41

is it doesn't pander to the vanity of the marketplace.

0:07:410:07:45

Because it doesn't have a badge, and actually,

0:07:450:07:47

to the untrained eye, it looks like a C Class Coupe, doesn't it?

0:07:470:07:50

Well, I think that's the problem.

0:07:500:07:51

If you buy a car with 550-plus horsepower,

0:07:510:07:54

you want people to know about it. Right?

0:07:540:07:56

I love the idea of just smoking along and no-one really knowing

0:07:560:08:00

until they see it go boom past them.

0:08:000:08:02

There's one thing you haven't mentioned,

0:08:020:08:04

which is the headlights, the Swarovski crystals.

0:08:040:08:07

Did you ever find out what they were for?

0:08:070:08:09

No. Absolutely no idea.

0:08:090:08:12

-I did.

-Can you enlighten me?

-Yes.

-Go on.

0:08:120:08:15

According to Mercedes, it's to provide striking visual highlights

0:08:150:08:20

and emphasise the unique nature of the vehicle.

0:08:200:08:23

-What? So they do nothing.

-Obviously.

-They do nothing.

0:08:230:08:27

Chris, I think you've got a little treat for us, haven't you?

0:08:270:08:31

I do indeed, George.

0:08:310:08:32

So far in this series, you've seen eight celebrities

0:08:320:08:35

get behind the wheel of our reasonably fast car.

0:08:350:08:37

Even with the traction control on,

0:08:370:08:39

the GT86 is a twitchy little number.

0:08:390:08:42

This week, it's my turn to get behind the wheel.

0:08:420:08:44

But this time with the traction control turned off.

0:08:440:08:47

This thing's only got 200 horsepower, weighs 1,250 kilograms,

0:08:510:08:55

so the numbers aren't massive.

0:08:550:08:56

But the rear tyres are straight off a Prius.

0:08:560:08:59

So it's got very little grip.

0:08:590:09:00

It's been designed to be a bit unruly,

0:09:000:09:02

that's why it's the perfect car for our celebs.

0:09:020:09:05

So if I turn in here now, I'm already...

0:09:050:09:08

look, we're sliding already.

0:09:080:09:10

God, that's a nice feeling!

0:09:100:09:12

But I have to say, it's a real challenge

0:09:120:09:14

because you have to balance the throttle quite accurately.

0:09:140:09:18

I think it's a wonderful car.

0:09:180:09:19

Because you can get on the gas early like that

0:09:190:09:22

and then just ride it all the way out.

0:09:220:09:24

But they use the traction control quite heavily there.

0:09:250:09:29

In fact, being honest,

0:09:290:09:30

they use the traction control everywhere cos they're leadfoots.

0:09:300:09:34

All of them are quite fearless. Look at the Hammerhead now, here we go.

0:09:340:09:38

If I gas it here, already we're fully, fully...

0:09:380:09:41

TYRE SCREECH DROWNS SPEECH

0:09:410:09:43

Much, much more difficult than a cee-d or something like that.

0:09:430:09:46

Yeah, James McAvoy was quite lairy through there.

0:09:460:09:50

And through this right-hander, he was, I have to say, quite fearless.

0:09:500:09:54

Oh-ho-ho!

0:09:540:09:55

95mph drift. Probably a bit much for our guests.

0:09:550:09:59

The follow-through, even safe, pretty much flat out.

0:10:000:10:03

Let the car right out to the outside

0:10:030:10:06

and then just trail-brake it in.

0:10:060:10:08

David Tennant nearly...

0:10:080:10:10

He was a worried boy.

0:10:100:10:13

But then you hit this really slippery tarmac

0:10:130:10:15

on that last corner, Gambon.

0:10:150:10:17

Gambon.

0:10:170:10:19

Oh, that was quite lairy!

0:10:190:10:21

-Scary?

-Now, on account of me liking living,

0:10:240:10:26

-traction control will stay on for all the guests from now on.

-Yes.

0:10:260:10:30

Now, Rory, when people see you and I together, they think,

0:10:300:10:33

these guys have probably got nothing in common.

0:10:330:10:36

One's cool, stylish, great at driving.

0:10:360:10:39

And the other is Rory Reid.

0:10:390:10:40

LAUGHTER

0:10:400:10:42

As it turns out, we're not that different.

0:10:420:10:44

This is the Ford Fiesta ST200.

0:10:470:10:50

It will do 142mph,

0:10:500:10:52

0 to 60 in 6.7 seconds,

0:10:520:10:55

and that makes it the fastest Fiesta ever made.

0:10:550:10:59

Look, it's no secret that I'm partial to a hot hatch.

0:11:060:11:09

Come on!

0:11:120:11:14

But there's a special place in my heart for the Ford Fiesta.

0:11:140:11:18

My first-ever car was a 1978 Fiesta.

0:11:180:11:22

'Introducing Fiesta. Now imported from Germany by Ford.'

0:11:220:11:27

It was the mid-'90s and it was a crucial time for the hatchback.

0:11:270:11:31

Back then, these cars didn't roll off the production line

0:11:310:11:34

with 17-inch alloys, Recaro seats and mad body kits,

0:11:340:11:38

they were affordable and begging to be tweaked.

0:11:380:11:42

Back then was the dawn of the modified car scene.

0:11:420:11:45

And I was hooked.

0:11:450:11:47

I started going to cruises,

0:11:540:11:56

which were clandestine gatherings in empty lots or car parks

0:11:560:12:00

where people would gather to show off their modified cars.

0:12:000:12:04

And this wasn't just in South London,

0:12:070:12:09

it was happening all over the country,

0:12:090:12:11

including in Stockport, where a young George Lewis

0:12:110:12:15

was pottering around in his own majestic Fiesta.

0:12:150:12:19

I certainly was, Rory.

0:12:190:12:21

-Hello.

-Hiya, mate.

0:12:210:12:23

So what made yours so special?

0:12:230:12:25

Mine was a '95 Fiesta, third generation,

0:12:250:12:29

and I got it for 100 quid off my mate Dougie.

0:12:290:12:32

But then I had to spend the money on the mods as well,

0:12:320:12:35

-so that was another 50 quid.

-OK. 50 quid's worth of mods?

0:12:350:12:39

-Oh, yes.

-So you had some special stuff on there then, clearly.

0:12:390:12:43

Er, yeah, I had stick-on vents on the bonnet.

0:12:430:12:46

I also had a flashing blue gear stick.

0:12:460:12:49

-So, just stuff that would make me go faster, really.

-Right.

0:12:490:12:52

I've never, ever heard of a flashing gear stick

0:12:520:12:54

-helping anyone change gear faster.

-I thought you were into cars, mate.

0:12:540:12:56

Well, clearly you know more than I do.

0:12:560:12:59

Did you find yourself going to cruises?

0:12:590:13:02

I went to cruises, but I found them pretty scary places.

0:13:020:13:06

You know, you turn up and there'd be an air of menace.

0:13:060:13:09

I'd always be worried the police were going to turn up

0:13:090:13:12

and for some reason they'd arrest me.

0:13:120:13:15

THEY LAUGH

0:13:150:13:16

The guy with the flashing blue knob, he's gone too far.

0:13:160:13:19

Nowadays, kids have it so easy.

0:13:190:13:21

You can kind of perv on your favourite car using the internet.

0:13:210:13:25

-Right, yeah.

-But that then, to find a car you really lusted after,

0:13:250:13:28

-you'd have to go and see it.

-Yes.

0:13:280:13:30

-But are there still cruises then, do they still exist?

-I think they do.

0:13:300:13:34

I think they're out there,

0:13:340:13:35

you just have to look really hard to find them.

0:13:350:13:38

-I know a guy who used to write for Max Power magazine.

-Oh, yeah.

0:13:380:13:41

His name's Dan and he said that there was

0:13:410:13:44

a semblance of a cruise happening not too far from here, actually.

0:13:440:13:48

-So, if you want to go and check one out?

-Yeah.

-We can.

-OK.

0:13:480:13:51

-I'm up for it.

-Cool, let's go and check one out.

0:13:510:13:54

We're off to the Ace Cafe, which at the height of the cruise scene,

0:13:550:13:59

was the ultimate hang-out for car enthusiasts and boy racers.

0:13:590:14:03

I wonder what it's like today.

0:14:050:14:06

-Here we are.

-Yep.

-Where are all the Novas?

0:14:130:14:16

Everything's a bit less bright blue than I remember.

0:14:180:14:21

-Right, Dan, we're looking for Dan.

-Let's go and find him.

0:14:210:14:24

Dan Anslow is a former feature writer and photographer

0:14:310:14:35

for car mag Max Power.

0:14:350:14:36

In its heyday, it was the go-to resource

0:14:360:14:39

for performance tuning and modification.

0:14:390:14:41

Dan himself was a boy racer who got himself up to all kinds of mischief.

0:14:410:14:46

Today, he's a little different.

0:14:460:14:47

All right, chaps?

0:14:470:14:49

-Dan.

-Rory.

-Hello, fella. Long time, no see.

-I know, mate, too long.

0:14:490:14:53

-This is George.

-Hi, Dan, good to meet you.

-Nice to meet you. All right?

0:14:530:14:56

What are you rolling in today? A little Nissan?

0:14:560:14:58

-Popped down in the R32 GTR.

-Nice, nice.

0:14:580:15:01

It's my weapon of choice tonight.

0:15:010:15:02

You've got a classic blue on gold colour scheme going on.

0:15:020:15:05

Yeah, she's nice, she's pretty.

0:15:050:15:06

But she's not that wild, bit like tonight, really.

0:15:060:15:08

Speaking of which, it's been 20-odd years since the cruise scene

0:15:080:15:13

was at its peak, and this is what it's become.

0:15:130:15:16

Yeah, well, I guess last time I was at the Ace Cafe

0:15:160:15:19

having a full-on cruise was about ten years ago.

0:15:190:15:22

Thousands of people here, cars everywhere,

0:15:220:15:24

smoke from burn-outs, doughnuts, flames out of exhausts.

0:15:240:15:28

It was wild, yeah, it was totally wild, it was the Wild West,

0:15:280:15:30

-it really was.

-It all seems a bit tamer now, doesn't it?

0:15:300:15:33

Yeah, it's quiet tonight, it's sanctioned, it's nicely organised.

0:15:330:15:37

I quite like this, that it's nice and welcoming now.

0:15:370:15:39

It's like a family day out, you know what I mean?

0:15:390:15:42

I think the guys have got a really good selection of cars out.

0:15:420:15:44

You've got some real enthusiasts.

0:15:440:15:46

I saw something quite nice as I drove in,

0:15:460:15:48

it was a Sierra RS Cosworth over there.

0:15:480:15:50

Yeah, nice, a classic cruise-mobile, that is, mate.

0:15:500:15:53

That was a unicorn for me. Shall we go and have a look?

0:15:530:15:55

-Yeah, let's go.

-Let's do it, man.

0:15:550:15:57

Mick, Rory. Nice to meet you.

0:16:050:16:07

I remember back in the day rocking up to cruises in my Fiesta

0:16:070:16:11

or Astra and seeing these things, and these were the daddies, man.

0:16:110:16:15

Fair play. How long have you had this thing?

0:16:150:16:17

About seven years. Bought it off a friend.

0:16:170:16:20

Basically, he had five kids.

0:16:200:16:22

So it was time for the car to go.

0:16:220:16:26

What does he drive now?

0:16:260:16:27

A Land Rover.

0:16:270:16:29

It happens to us all, mate.

0:16:310:16:33

And do you think these things have changed quite a lot?

0:16:330:16:35

-Have cruises changed?

-Definitely.

0:16:350:16:37

I used to come up especially.

0:16:370:16:40

People were going mad outside here with this many cars.

0:16:400:16:43

-There's not enough smoke, is there?

-Well, this is it.

0:16:430:16:46

It's a slightly different affair today,

0:16:480:16:50

but it's nice to see the love of the mod hasn't changed.

0:16:500:16:53

Look, he's got the classic neons going on.

0:16:530:16:56

Yeah, this is what I remember, brightly coloured neon lights.

0:16:560:17:00

'It wouldn't be a cruise

0:17:000:17:01

'without a ridiculously over-the-top sound system.

0:17:010:17:05

'Now, this takes me back.'

0:17:050:17:06

-You've got one or two speakers in it now, I see.

-I have 68.

-68?

-Yeah.

0:17:060:17:11

-I love the way you snuck in speakers in the footwell.

-Yeah.

0:17:110:17:14

But there's literally nowhere in this car that hasn't got a speaker.

0:17:140:17:18

It looks the part, can we hear it?

0:17:180:17:20

-Of course, no problem.

-All right, fire it up.

-OK.

0:17:200:17:23

MUSIC BLARES

0:17:230:17:26

Yeah, quite loud, isn't it?

0:17:290:17:31

BASS THUMPS

0:17:310:17:34

We never got stuff like this back in the day, did we?

0:17:350:17:38

-No way, look at this thing.

-Looks like it probably cost more than Fiesta.

0:17:380:17:41

Back in the day, I had a Vauxhall Nova, an old 1.2 P reg Nova,

0:17:430:17:48

and back then it was very different because you'd actually

0:17:480:17:51

have to work for it. You would modify things at home.

0:17:510:17:53

You'd get your friends to help you and it was a bit more communal,

0:17:530:17:56

whereas now people build stuff like this,

0:17:560:17:59

it's a completely different level.

0:17:590:18:01

Everything kind of rolls off the production line ready for you.

0:18:010:18:05

There's not much individuality any more.

0:18:050:18:08

It's a bit different now because manufacturers have changed things,

0:18:080:18:11

so everything's electronic, you can't necessarily put

0:18:110:18:13

a different engine from one car into another car.

0:18:130:18:16

It's very difficult to modify cars now.

0:18:160:18:18

I think a lot of people still want to do it,

0:18:180:18:20

but it's not organic like it used to be.

0:18:200:18:22

You know, it's not quite the same.

0:18:220:18:24

But I think the community is still the same.

0:18:240:18:26

Are cruises smaller now, just fewer people there?

0:18:320:18:34

Yeah, they're smaller, they're fragmented out.

0:18:340:18:37

You've got guys who love performance,

0:18:370:18:39

you got guys that love just styling only,

0:18:390:18:41

you've got guys who love Japanese cars, European cars, and I think

0:18:410:18:44

what they've done is more split out into their own little scenes.

0:18:440:18:47

They don't do anything crazy, but they just get together,

0:18:470:18:49

have a cup of tea and talk about their cars.

0:18:490:18:51

But there's none of the associated madness.

0:18:510:18:53

-It's a lot less dangerous now then.

-Yeah, it's a lot less chance

0:18:530:18:56

of getting run over now than there was back in the day.

0:18:560:19:00

Do you know what this is missing, lads?

0:19:010:19:03

I reckon we should find an old car park and do handbrake turns.

0:19:030:19:07

-I'm well up for that.

-Yeah?

0:19:070:19:09

Er, yeah, it's 9.30pm, though, we've got work in the morning, so...

0:19:090:19:12

Yeah, come on.

0:19:120:19:14

APPLAUSE

0:19:140:19:18

That was fun.

0:19:180:19:20

I mean, I wasn't worried about getting arrested this time

0:19:200:19:23

and we were back home in bed by 10pm.

0:19:230:19:26

Not together!

0:19:260:19:28

Yeah, yeah.

0:19:280:19:29

Chris, you are a more distinguished gentleman than me and Rory.

0:19:290:19:34

I mean you're a little bit older.

0:19:340:19:36

Were you ever into modding your cars, ever had a flaming exhaust?

0:19:360:19:41

Yeah, I think anyone who loves cars tweaks them and plays with them.

0:19:410:19:45

And when you start out, you have to.

0:19:450:19:47

So everything I owned for the first five or six years was, yeah,

0:19:470:19:51

played with and mostly ruined.

0:19:510:19:53

-What was your first car?

-Mini. 998 Mini. Yeah, it had to be.

0:19:530:19:55

1.5in SU, Janspeed exhaust, took the interior out

0:19:550:19:58

and drove it like an absolute knob.

0:19:580:20:01

Yes. I expect no less.

0:20:010:20:03

It's been a good night for the hatchback.

0:20:030:20:06

Rory, we saw you in the GTI Club Sport S

0:20:060:20:10

-on the Nurburgring with Sabine.

-Oh, yeah.

0:20:100:20:13

That's a worrying combination.

0:20:130:20:16

And you are a very brave man.

0:20:160:20:18

OK, OK.

0:20:180:20:21

OK, now I'm scared.

0:20:210:20:23

Aaaargh!

0:20:230:20:26

-Oh, my...!

-Don't worry.

0:20:260:20:28

Aaargh!

0:20:290:20:30

OK...

0:20:310:20:33

I'm not OK.

0:20:330:20:34

APPLAUSE

0:20:340:20:36

I said "very brave".

0:20:360:20:38

-Bravish.

-Yeah, yeah.

0:20:380:20:40

Well, now, let's bring out the woman

0:20:400:20:43

who is responsible for Rory's night terrors.

0:20:430:20:45

It's Sabine.

0:20:450:20:46

There, there.

0:20:540:20:55

Right, take a seat.

0:20:550:20:58

Sabine, that looked like it was a very fun day for you and Rory.

0:20:590:21:02

-Mainly you.

-I enjoyed it quite much. I don't know. You?

0:21:020:21:07

I'm alive, so I enjoyed it.

0:21:070:21:10

-This was Rory's first time on the Ring.

-Yeah, imagine.

0:21:110:21:14

How did it feel when he arrived? Did he looked nervous?

0:21:140:21:18

Not at all. I thought maybe he did some practice,

0:21:180:21:21

you know, on a computer game or whatever.

0:21:210:21:24

Literally, it was my first-ever time going around the Nurburgring

0:21:250:21:29

and then you get in the car with her,

0:21:290:21:30

-it's the most terrifying thing, I promise you.

-He loved it.

0:21:300:21:33

Cos you're watching it as a driver in your own head thinking,

0:21:330:21:36

I should brake there, but she brakes 50 yards further down the road.

0:21:360:21:39

You think, you can't possibly accelerate round this bend,

0:21:390:21:42

but she's got her foot to the floor, she is the queen of the Nurburgring

0:21:420:21:46

and she is quite frankly one of the best drivers

0:21:460:21:48

I've sat next to a car, she's unbelievable.

0:21:480:21:50

You did have that nervous laugh - I'm about to die!

0:21:500:21:53

Listen, that's all genuine, I had actual nightmares after that.

0:21:530:21:58

You must have your own specific bits of the track

0:21:580:22:01

that are your favourites?

0:22:010:22:03

-Oh, I like the fast parts.

-OK.

0:22:030:22:06

That's all of them.

0:22:070:22:08

Yeah! There are some tiny corners.

0:22:080:22:12

But I don't like the tiny ones,

0:22:120:22:14

I like to have a good settled car on that really high-speed area.

0:22:140:22:18

-With bumps and jumps and so on.

-Yeah.

0:22:180:22:21

I have to say, dude, you're a very brave man

0:22:210:22:24

because if I had to write down on a piece of paper

0:22:240:22:26

the worst way to be introduced to that circuit,

0:22:260:22:29

it involved her, a quiet track, a hatchback that you know

0:22:290:22:33

she's going to get on top of in about two seconds flat

0:22:330:22:36

and drive really, really fast and have massive confidence in.

0:22:360:22:39

-Yeah, I feel for you.

-I think we're making progress here.

0:22:390:22:42

Hug? Nah!

0:22:420:22:43

So, the Golf is obviously a hatchback,

0:22:430:22:45

but the Club Sport S is pretty much a sports car.

0:22:450:22:48

Interesting geek fact for you.

0:22:480:22:50

The guy that worked on the chassis and suspension for the 997 GT3 RS

0:22:500:22:55

left Porsche and went to Volkswagen.

0:22:550:22:57

And his next job was to do that car.

0:22:570:23:00

-So their DNA is linked, basically.

-Oh, OK.

0:23:000:23:02

But this car has some serious engineering in it.

0:23:020:23:05

The only thing is, when you exit a corner,

0:23:050:23:08

the inside wheel is spinning a lot,

0:23:080:23:11

so you could really make a big improvement on the time

0:23:110:23:14

when this wouldn't happen.

0:23:140:23:16

-So you think that could be faster if they change a few things?

-Yeah.

0:23:160:23:19

They have done some great work though.

0:23:190:23:21

It doesn't understeer at all.

0:23:210:23:23

You were throwing it into corners at stupid speeds. Just hanging on.

0:23:230:23:27

It's a work of art, that thing.

0:23:270:23:28

Well, that's all we have time for.

0:23:280:23:30

So, can we have a round of applause, please, for Sabine?

0:23:300:23:33

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:23:330:23:36

Rory, what have we got coming up next week?

0:23:390:23:41

We'll get the inside track on the astonishing new Bugatti Chiron

0:23:410:23:45

and if you've ever wondered how to build a life-size arcade game,

0:23:450:23:48

make sure you tune in.

0:23:480:23:50

We'll see you next week for more Extra Gear. Goodnight.
