Welcome to Airmageddon.

The show that dines out on tension,

makes a meal of mechanised entertainment

and has an appetite for airborne annihilation.

What's on the menu today, Rach?

Well, for starters we've got

four fast, furious and flavoursome helpings of the Airsault Course.

Mmm, delicious. Then we'll be tucking into our main course,

a tasty new game called Bottle Bashers.

Before finishing up with a head-to-head battle

for supremacy in the sky.

Yes, it will be just desserts for one team

and sweet victory for the other in our final Dogfight.

-Will, I think I can hear our guest arriving.

-Oh, right.

Well, let's meet our aviators.

First coming this way in is team This Way Up,

brothers Thomas and Toby.

Next up it's the Doom Dragons led by Holly with her dad, Stuart.

Third is Joe and his wingman dad, Anthony, AKA the Camodragons.

And last applying to the Airena are The Kestrels,

best friends Aran and Sam.

-Here are the teams. Are you feeling good?

-ALL:

-Yes!

Excellent. So, Aran and Sam, The Kestrels,

are you feeling confident or is this all a bit overwhelming?

In a way, it is overwhelming but I'm really excited to be here.

It's an amazing adventure

and I can't wait to fly the drones around the obstacle course.

-Brilliant.

-And the Camodragons, are you excited, Joe?

-Yeah.

I'm excited to be here and fly the drones.

Just having a fun time.

Definitely. Anyway, our teams, well, we think they're ready.

Yes, and so too is the first of our challenges.

-How do you know that, Will?

-Oh, a little PIG told me

and he's about fly the course for us.

So, P-I-G, over to you.

Welcome to the Airsault Airena.

Big enough to fit all the tea in China in.

It needs to be large cos our drones are as big as this cute fella

and they need to gallop around the Airsault Course thusly.

Our drones need to jump over four gates.

The gates are two metres wide, the drones are 1.7 metres wide.

You do the maths. Tight squeeze.

After Nelson's Column-esque Pillars,

it's time to post themselves through the Letterboxes.

Trip up and they'll hit the mat,

three quarters of a large tree below.

Then it's the Foggy Corridor, which is more difficult to see through

than your teenage cousin's funny moods.

The Vortex then blows hot air upwards

with the force of a giant's hairdryer.

Then, hopefully, across the finish line unscathed and in good time.

Good luck, everyone.

If that isn't enough to give you vertigo,

then maybe one of our resident drones is.

Let's find out who's defending the Airsault Course.

-AIR MARSHALL:

Soft, warm and cuddly,

these are not words you would use to describe this drone.

Hail to the GUARD.

First to face the Airsault Course is The Kestrel team.

Aran is a bit of a techno-guy.

He'd better "tech-no" prisoners on this Airsault today.

HE LAUGHS

Best friend, Sam, loves canoeing and water polo.

Lots of transferable wingchum skills there.

And because the drones hover mid-air, they're called Kestrel.

How confident are you

that you're going to set a good time on the Airsault Course?

I don't want to say I'm 100% confident

because if I say that, something will go wrong

but at the same time,

I am pretty confident that we're going to set a good time.

-Excellent. I'm glad to hear it.

-Thanks.

-And have you got your wingman chat down?

-Probably, yeah. I hope so.

-Hope so. All right, guys, are you ready?

-Yes, I am ready.

All right, then. Aviators, stand by.

you're clear for takeoff.

The GUARD and Air Marshall are both at altitude waiting with attitude

for the first of the Airsaults.

Let's do this.

-Kestrels, launch in three, two, one.

-BUZZER SOUNDS

Kestrels take flight.

Towards the hoop! Towards the hoop!

Left, left, left and come out.

Left. Up, up, up.

Forward, forward, forward. Yes.

Forward and quicker, quicker.

-Quicker.

Go right down.

Down beneath the yellow lines.

Already getting really stuck in

as the wingman. It's great.

Sam claims to talk well under pressure

and he's doing just that.

Don't touch the floor.

All right, go left. Go back.

Now, come towards the Letterbox.

Slightly higher. Higher. Towards us. Towards us.

You don't want to hit that.

You don't want to hit that.

He's right, Aran. Listen to your wingchum.

Aran. All right, good.

Up a bit more. Up, up, up.

Slightly, yes. Slow down, slow down.

Go down, down. Go left.

That way. That way. Yeah.

I'm trying, I'm trying.

It sounds like Sam may be trying Aran's patience.

HE LAUGHS

OK, carry on, straight through. Up.

Now forwards. Through that hoop.

This show has been going long enough

for you to know that that is a gate, not a plastic hoop.

Now.

All right, take it down. No, forward! Forward!

-AIR MARSHALL:

-Warning.

-Oh, God.

What's this? How has this happened?

Look at that. I've never seen a drone dangling like that before.

Like a pair of pants on a washing line.

Oh, dear.

They'd been going so well

but perhaps overconfidence played a part in this mishap.

I bet they couldn't do that again if they tried.

But hang on, The Kestrels are somehow back in the game.

-Go back, go back.

-I did not see that coming.

But what's that done to the rotors, I wonder?

Go forward. No, up, up, up.

They've got to keep it together.

They mustn't waste this second chance.

Carry on, Aran. Aran, don't use the camera.

Oh, no.

-Catastrophe.

-Oh, what a flip there!

It looked like Aran was looking at the camera

instead of watching the Airsault Course.

And The Kestrels hit the pillar there with some gusto

which you can see from the drone cam.

It left them stranded like a tortoise on its shell.

-Look what you've done to that drone.

-That's pretty bad.

That is pretty bad. Take a close look.

But it looked like you were slightly out of control

at the beginning as well.

At the beginning, I think I was just going a bit too quickly

and not thinking properly and obviously managed to do that.

While The Kestrels get their sticky tape out,

we'll welcome the Camodragons.

Man City fan Joe does archery in his spare time

so he's used to firing dangerous objects into the air.

Dad Anthony works as an account manager,

a job which doesn't lend itself to many jokes.

So, I don't know what to say.

Camodragon is so-called because Joe likes Komodo dragons and camouflage.

Simple.

Joe and Anthony, Camodragon, you guys are up next.

Now, Joe, I've heard that your dad coaches you at football.

-Is he a good coach?

-No.

-WILL CHUCKLES

-No?

-No.

-Not at all?

-No.

Is he going to be a good wingman?

No.

I don't know.

Don't worry too much about what he's saying,

the focus is making sure you're flying well.

-Are you feeling confident?

-Yes.

Excellent. That's what we like to hear.

All right, then, Joe, I think you're ready to go. Aviators, stand by.

Chatty Joe and Anthony are doing their final checks

and here comes the Air Marshall. How are you today?

-AIR MARSHALL:

-I'm not talking to you.

-You weren't nice to me in rehearsals.

Listen, mate, I was hot, the air con was broken

and I needed to cool down.

I am not offended, I am a drone.

Well, you do drone on sometimes. Shall we do this?

Camodragons, launch in three, two, one.

BUZZER SOUNDS

Kestrels watch on anxiously.

OK, come in for the hoop.

And remember, the Camodragons don't know what has gone before them.

Nice droning there by Joe

who wants to be a zoologist when he's older.

I don't blame him, I love zoos.

Oh, it's like fire.

Can you come a bit quicker?

Can you come higher?

I can see Joe is really trying to avoid that fire.

Which is probably a sensible thing to do.

So far, so good as he comes through the first Letterbox.

All Air Marshall can do is watch on

as the Camodragons smoothly sweep down.

Very careful through the Letterboxes.

Just try and get it over that way a little bit.

Go on. Go on, you're clear there.

This is good.

And then straight up to the hoop.

They may be Camodragons but the camo is not all that,

I can see them easily.

-There they are.

-Do you need to turn?

-HE LAUGHS

-No, I'm all right.

-Are you going to go sideways?

-Watch that post.

-This is good wingmanery.

Bit closer. Go on.

He seems to be waiting for the smoke to clear.

Sensible but it might cost him time.

That's right. That smoke will never clear.

But you need to get the right balance between speed and control.

We all saw what happened to The Kestrels.

Yeah, you're clear. And then straight up to this pole here.

And talking of The Kestrels,

they now know the Camodragons have passed where they crashed out.

And then through.

Yeah, we're through.

No problem there through the next gate

and it's now down, down, down...

-Oh!

-Whoops, not that far down, Joe.

But it's cool, hitting the deck is allowed.

Just go forward now.

Into The Vortex.

Up The Vortex.

Good flying in The Vortex.

That's right and now he needs

ultimate skills

-to dodge the GUARD who's blocking his path.

-Through, through, through.

-And then over through them hoops.

-No problem.

Joe has smoothly worked his way around

each and every obstacle in his way.

Go, go, go. Yay! Well done.

Amazing, almost a perfect round

and it was very nearly spoilt there as Joe descended too quickly

and nearly came a cropper on the Airena floor.

Time confirmed.

As The Kestrels failed to finish,

the Camodragons are currently in first place with a time of 2.49,

but can they stay there?

Or can our next Airsault challengers take the top spot?

-How was it out there?

-It was intense.

-Yeah?

-I thought I was going to crash.

-But you didn't crash.

Do you think that was because you had a great wingman here?

No.

-I was.

-Joe!

-We did well. He did really well.

He did really, really well.

Really, really, really well.

More dragons now but they are Doom Dragons this time.

Holly says she's the three Cs - competitive, confident and cocky.

As long as she's not the fourth C - come last - she'll be OK.

Wingman Stuart loves all things remote control and his daughter.

Holly looked to myths for inspiration for their drone

but will Doom Dragons become legends on the course today?

Holly and Stuart, AKA Doom Dragons.

Yes, it's embroidered on their caps.

How are you guys feeling?

Really nervous.

Cos in all of the other series, all the girls went out first.

Except the girls that made it to the semifinals.

That's what you've got to focus on. That's what you've got to aim for.

And I tell you what, no matter when anyone else went out,

nobody else was wearing wicked caps.

So, in a way, you're already the winners. OK?

-All right, are you ready to go?

She is our only drone-ess today

but it doesn't matter if you're Holly or Ollie,

it's how welly you flelly - fly. I don't know.

-AIR MARSHALL:

BUZZER SOUNDS Off they go.

Move round so you're in front of the circle.

Slow down, Dad.

-OK, sorry, darling.

-That is a formidable-looking drone.

And a formidable-sounding Holly

letting her wingman know who's boss.

You're doing brilliant.

You need a bit of height.

Yeah, that's what I'm getting.

-She knows what she's doing.

-That's it.

Yeah, but a little bit more, maybe.

The Doom Dragons working as a team here.

That's right. You've got to try and avoid this ending in doom, please.

Holly takes her dog on agility training,

lots of relevant and transferable skills for today's shenanigans.

A bit more height. That's it. Brilliant.

Lots of obstacles to go over, under and around.

-But no dogs, obviously.

Pigs though, there's pigs. A PIG.

-Then come down now.

-I can't see anything.

-Put your fog lamps on, Holly.

-You're right in the right place there.

She's struggling to see, he's being confident in his directions, good.

But is it?

Doom Dragon is so close to the pillar where The Kestrels crashed.

But they can breathe a fiery sigh of relief

as, unknown to them, they're through to Round Two.

That was very close.

-A bit towards us slightly.

-I can't!

OK, don't worry. Don't worry. Calm down.

The stress is starting to get to the Doom Dragons.

And they've spun.

-Never seen that before.

-Me neither.

-But Holly has things back under control.

-Down.

So much smoke, so little visibility, so hard.

-Slightly lower.

-The Vortex next.

What will happen here?

That's it. Take Doom to The Vortex.

-And as soon as you are over it, let's go up.

-Good wingmanery here.

That's it. Brilliant.

The GUARD is getting into position for a block manoeuvre.

Good. Slightly more height.

That's what the wingman is for.

A slight adjustment was needed

so Holly just hops through the last gate.

Now into the flames.

The Dragon will like that.

Maybe but its motor won't if it gets burnt.

Now it's the sprint for the line.

Go on, all the way. Brilliant!

-And done!

-Look at that. Well done.

-Excellent work. Great wingmanery.

Holly had a couple of close shaves over the course

but good communication and a calm head was key in the end.

-AIR MARSHALL:

-Times confirmed.

So, three of our four teams have raced the Airsault Course now.

Camodragons remain top with 2.49,

Holly's Doom Dragon is second having gone round in 3.51

but The Kestrels only hope of remaining in the contest is

if our final team crash land earlier than they did.

Obviously, definitely through to Round Two.

How does that make you feel?

Really, like, not as nervous for the next round but still nervous.

I heard you telling your dad off quite a bit out there.

-Sometimes it's a bit annoying.

-OK, Dad. Yeah.

-Yeah.

-Someone shouting in your ear. But it was help still.

-Yeah.

Last up, This Way Up,

brothers Thomas and Toby.

Thomas loves drone flying, funnily enough,

filming and editing

so he could produce the show.

That could save a few quid.

Wingman Toby is a keen footballer.

Presumably he's a wingman at that too.

This Way Up was inspired by packaging that arrives in the post.

They'll be hoping this is a first-class round.

Tom, Toby, from This Way Up,

you guys know your up from your down

but do you know your way around the Airsault Course?

-Yeah.

-So, you've got it all worked out.

-Wingman Toby, have you got any top tips for your pilot?

-Yes, I do.

-Yeah?

-So, first, you want some control and some speed

-because it's about the time.

-Exactly.

You don't want to go really slow like a slug.

-You want to go fast.

-Exactly.

I tell you, it's a competition, we're in it to win it so, yeah.

-This is great.

He's in it to win it and he doesn't want to go slow like a slug.

-It sounds to me like you guys are raring to go.

-Yeah.

Self-confessed drone addict Tom is up, up and away.

He is oozing confidence here.

Come on, Tom. You can do this.

Wingman Toby wants him to go really fast...

And he's doing just that, Will.

-..but he doesn't need to go that fast to get through.

-I know!

But it looks like he's listening to his brother here.

I hope he doesn't overdo it.

Yes, Will, if they ding an obstacle at this pace,

it will almost certainly send them crashing out.

Come on. Come on. We can do this.

Before the smoke comes, quick!

In the line! Oh, yeah, you have to go through that.

Toby needs to focus and slow down his brain.

More haste, less speed, as my mother used to say.

Wingman Toby has all the nerves and excitement for both of them.

They're first with 1.48. Amazing.

Putting Camodragons into second place.

It's not all doom and gloom for the Doom Dragons,

they're third with 3.51.

But it's feet firmly back on the floor for The Kestrels

in fourth place.

and you are definitely going through to the next.

-Kestrels, we know what that means, don't we?

-Yeah.

who are at this very moment preparing themselves

for our next challenge.

but what skills do you reckon you are going to need

I'm just going to need to keep it slow, keep calm and relaxed

and just, you know, have a special tactic

-that me and my brother have discussed.

That you obviously can't reveal here cos then everyone will do it.

All right, guys. Just basically copy what they are doing

and you'll probably be all right.

OK. I think we need to get you lot up in the air

and smashing some bottles.

Aviators and wingmen in position and looking thirsty for work.

Over to you, Air Marshall.

-AIR MARSHALL:

-Aviators, stand by.

BUZZER SOUNDS

And our three drones are up and away.

That wrecking ball really does make a difference to the controls.

It can carry the drone in any direction once momentum kicks in.

Camodragon have gone straight for the last bottle.

And that seems to be a good play, Will,

because they've gone into the lead.

Holly, meanwhile, just nudges a bottle with Doom Dragon.

Camodragon have got one.

Joe goes for another hit but the ball swung the other way.

That rocking motion really messes with the drone's centre of gravity

making controlling it so hard.

Thomas with This Way Up have finally hit a bottle. Great hit.

Our pilots have to concentrate so hard with this game

-that it makes finishing sentences difficult.

-I-It...

S-see?

-So unlucky.

-Big time, Will.

-Poor Holly.

-Did you see that?

But finally!

Everybody's got one.

-She has a direct hit.

-I've got this.

-Yes, you have, Joe.

-Yes! Well done.

Camodragons have come out of hiding

and downed another bottle.

That's it. Good, good. Keep going.

And so have This Way Up

who send another bottle crashing to the floor.

Ooh, Doom Dragons with another near miss.

Oh, unlucky, darling.

Oh, but a miss is as good as a mile in this game.

Thomas just got the third for This Way Up

and he's hungry for victory here.

And knock me down if they haven't got a fourth bottle too.

It's exceptional stuff here.

and keeping Tom aware of the situation

but are his nerves affecting his pilot?

-Tom missed again.

-Oh, here comes Joe and Camodragons for the victory.

-Forward, forward.

Can you believe it? It's not fallen off the pillar.

Does it heck, Joe. The bottle needs to hit the floor.

They've both tipped but they haven't fallen.

It's happened again.

Now This Way Up have tipped their bottle over

but it's still on the pillar.

A BUG definitely bugging Thomas for sure there.

Good. Now up slightly.

That's it. Good stuff. Good stuff.

Meanwhile, the Doom Dragons are still going about their business.

That's their fourth bottle.

From nowhere,

Holly from Doom Dragons caught up.

I know!

The battle of the bottles.

Goodness. Who's it going to be?

They all need one more.

Holly's is the only one still upright, big advantage here.

Who has got the bottle to finish this off?

This is really tense.

And all three pilots starting to look nervous here.

Lots of hovering, ball swinging.

I can't stress enough how much these weighted balls

can mess with the balance of a drone.

-Oh! So close from Doom Dragon.

-Oh!

Steady hands and steady minds are needed here.

It's still all to play for.

Now it's This Way Up's time to narrowly miss. Oh!

Forward, forward, forward.

This is the view from Camodragon's last bottle. He's going to hit...

No, he's not! I made a rare error there.

-No!

-Up!

Joe can't believe it.

Neither can I. I'm usually so accurate.

That's it. Good stuff. Good stuff.

Not Holly yet as she misses again.

Her wrecking ball is a wretchedly unlucky ball.

Where are you going?

Toby isn't sure what Tom's playing at

but does Tom have a plan?

He swoops down and ka-pow! Yes!

It's a two-horse race from now

for a place in the Dogfight.

Air Marshall is hampering the Camodragons here.

Move, you bot.

Do you think he's going to listen, Joe? No way.

Man City fans always dreaming.

Doom Dragons aim their last bottle at speed

-and go straight past it at speed too.

-Slow down.

Meanwhile, the Camodragons take a leaf out of This Way Up's book

and try the slam dunk approach.

And it works!

They've done it. Doom Dragons won't be happy to have come so close.

Not even a pesky BUG could stop Joe there.

-AIR MARSHALL:

-Time confirmed.

So, even though their early lead was cancelled out,

it was This Way Up who were first to bash their last bottle,

booking their place in the Dogfight.

They'll be joined there by Camodragons

who downed their last bottle just ahead of Holly of the Doom Dragons,

whose amazing comeback wasn't quite enough in the end. Too bad.

So, it is as it looked.

This Way Up, guys, you go into the Dogfight

with a five-second advantage.

Unfortunately, Holly, that does mean that you're grounded.

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

So, it comes to this, our endgame.

A ferocious battle of wits, nerve and piloting skill.

The winner flies through to our semifinals,

the loser, well, the loser doesn't.

Let's see them face off in the Dogfight.

Here's a PIG drone to explain about a dogfight

between human competitors.

Hit your opponent four times with your built-in lasers and you win

but at the same time, avoid getting hit four times yourself,

avoid the resident drones

and avoid getting burnt by the Fountains of Fire.

That will make you squeal like a pig. Oink.

Excellent. Well, I can tell you are pumped up and ready to go

so let's get this fight in the air.

All right, then, aviators, stand by.

Start your pre-flight checks.

Calibrate your sights.

This is the Dogfight, you're clear for takeoff.

This Way Up will be first into the skies

with their five-second advantage from the last game.

Air Marshall and WASP are already there looking for trouble.

-AIR MARSHALL:

Brothers Thomas and Toby are up and away

and as soon as they get through the gate, they'll be active.

-AIR MARSHALL:

-Camodragons, launch.

Camodragons are off and This Way Up are zapping already.

Keep on hitting, hitting.

Over, over, over. Now we are going. Well done.

This is furious.

then hit Camodragons on the chin.
