Welcome to Airmageddon.

Here in the Airena, the noble art of drone on drone combat

is being taken to even greater heights. On the bill tonight,

three rounds of aerial action

and three knockouts to decide our champs.

Yes, we have four contenders for the title and they're about to step into

this ring to take each other on.

Some of them will fly like a butterfly...

But one will sting like a bee.

So, let's get ready to rumble as we meet our aviators.

OK, first up, make some noise for Ellie and Nathaniel, AKA Army Paws.

Standing to attention next are Team Hurricane, Abs and dad Abdullah.

Air Flames are also taking to the sky.

It's Paul and his dad Michael.

Sam with his dad Trevor complete our line-up with the Flight Masterz.

Our teams are here but are they ready to take on

the heavyweight challenge of Airmageddon? ALL: Yeah!

Abs, how confident are you

that you're going to just breeze through this competition?

I'm going to blow out Air Flames.

What have you got to say to Abs over there and the Hurricanes?

Well, he looks pretty confident but I'm sure we can somehow melt him.

Oh, they're going to somehow melt you! Watch out, guys!

So, they're the four of our teams who are about to go wing to wing

in the first of our challenges. Three will survive.

One will be eliminated.

And here's my good old mate, PIG, with all the rules.

OINK!

The Airsault Airena is so big,

it can house two One Direction gigs at one time.

The reason for this is simple.

Our drones are almost as big as a three-seater sofa.

But there's no sitting around.

Each drone must fly through four gates.

The gates are about as wide as a bald eagle's wingspan.

The drones are just ten centimetres narrower.

After passing round the pillars, it's letterbox time.

That one is a tight squeeze for a drone.

Lose control and that's a seven metre plunge to the ground.

Then it's the foggy corridor,

which even Superman's X-ray vision couldn't penetrate.

Head up The Vortex, which has the power of 42 leaf blowers,

then hopefully cross the finish line unscathed

and in good time. Good luck.

And making things even more difficult for our aviators

are our resident drones.

One of them will be at cruising altitude

alongside our contenders' drones,

so let's see who's up for mischief this time.

Impatient, immovable, in your face, it's the WASP.

He got out of his nest on the wrong side today and he's keen to sting.

First to face the Airsault course is Team Hurricane.

Abs loves aviation.

His grandad and great-grandad were pilots.

Did they even have planes way back then?

Wingdad Abdullah is a kung fu master so I have nothing but nice things

to say about him. He's a top guy.

Hurricane's drone has a little, blue spider atop it.

They designed it to be light so it won't upset the balance.

You're the first to go.

Now, that can be quite a lot of pressure.

Are you going to try and just go for it, break some kind of record,

or are you going to focus on getting round in one piece?

Try and break the record.

Go on! Oh, we're looking forward to seeing that!

Have you got any tips to help him do that?

Fire up your motors, rev up your rotors.

You're cleared for takeoff. Aviators ready, resident drones steady,

we are ready to go.

AIR MARSHALL: Team Hurricane.

Three, two, one.

Abs is airborne and ready to whip up a storm

in the Airena with Hurricane.

Abs is off on his record-breaking attempt.

Fingers crossed he does it.

Not you, Abs. You keep your fingers and thumbs uncrossed

and working the controls, mate.

He zips around those flames,

whizzes through the pillars and is already at the letterboxes.

Wow. Barely slowed down to go through that letterbox.

It's amazing.

Oh, this is...this is quick.

It really is. Wingdad Abdullah is a postman.

He must have given him some tips

about how to deal with the letterboxes.

Another gate penetrated with ease, and onto the foggy corridor.

Hurri-cane he do it?

Can he do it? WASP is in the air.

Uh-oh. Oh, and he's coming for him.

But can he catch him?

No, wannabe stunt pilot Abs was too tricksy for the stinger that time.

Wow. Once he gets set, he just goes for it.

He doesn't slow down for obstacles at all.

So long as he doesn't collide with anything, Will.

The slightest sting can have catastrophic consequences.

Hurricane does. He breezed past it with ease.

Another gate, a dive under the Air Marshall,

but who's this making an appearance?

The WASP is going to get in the way.

Will WASP'S position affect Abs's flight path?

No, Abs adjusts his trajectory and soars past him.

Brilliant! Another look at how Abs swept through the letterboxes.

It illustrates perfectly how quickly Hurricane took to the Airsault.

How quickly? One minute, 35. Wow.

Amazing. Hurricane, Abs, wow!

It put me off by... when we almost crashed.

He's just super cool.

Onto our next two wannabe cool contenders, Army Paws.

Aviator Ellie is an avid gamer and hates it when people think

her best mate Nathaniel is her boyfriend.

Nathaniel is Ellie's boyfriend... I mean, wingman today.

Just kidding, Ellie! They've been friends for eight years

so I'm expecting great teamwork. Between them,

they have five cats so a cat-related design was always on the cards.

How are you feeling, Ellie? Nervous but also excited.

Yeah? On a scale of one to ten, how nervous are you?

About three. Only about three? Oh, that's not too bad.

Is that because you are very confident in your wingman? Yeah.

Nathaniel, what kind of words of encouragement have you got

to help Ellie? Just fly like you normally would. That's good.

Forget about the cameras, forget the fact that I'm going to be

standing here. Just focus on getting round.

Yeah. Let's do it.

Ellie, Nathanial and Army Paws

are just limbering up and then they'll be off.

Talking of which, how do you stay in shape, Air Marshall?

AIR MARSHALL: Frequent servicing and a healthy diet.

Oh, really? What's your five a day - grease, battery acid, ball bearings,

polish and oil? No, I'm not a monster.

I prefer chicken salad.

Dee-lish. Well, that explains a lot.

What? Chickens can't fly very well either.

Cheeky monkey.

Army Paws launch in three, two, one.

BUZZER

And Ellie is off.

With a little wobble there.

Fingers crossed for Ellie.

Air Marshall watching intently and WASP not too far away, either.

She and Nathaniel play a lot of games together

and their teamwork skills are apparent here.

Ellie is through the gate already.

It's a very fast start.

Yeah, not the smoothest ride, but she's going at a good lick.

Oh, close to the columns!

Ellie is as fearless an aviator as I ever did see.

You can tell she loves her rugby.

This could be a high impact sport, too, the way she's going.

She just zoomed straight through.

Not content with going at 100mph, Ellie's started showboating!

She's reversing through the letterboxes.

Oh, I'm getting travel sick just looking at this.

Can you pass me a bucket, please?

I'm going to lose it!

It's fine. Listen, Ellie's cool, Ellie's calm.

Calmer than I'd be out there.

These obstacles are huge, very intimidating.

You need to hold and get... Hold and move around, hold and move around.

Right, you're good there.

This...this could be just as fast.

No doubt. Annoyingly, I'm paid to say a certain amount of words

each race. I'm going to have to speed up here. Here we see Army Paws

descending before The Vortex. Can Ellie safely negotiate her way in

without any mishaps? I'm not sure. We'll have to wait and see.

This is looking good so far.

I really need to take a breath. I'm feeling faint.

HE TAKES A DEEP BREATH Oh!

It wobbles a lot.

Turn to the hoop. Not hoop, gate!

Army Paws still unscathed and flying like an out-of-control Rottweiler.

It moves fast. I'm exhausted just watching, Will.

Air Marshall can't keep up.

Wow! Well, there wasn't much air between Army Paws

and some of the obstacles on that run. Ellie was nearly knocked

from pillar to post, literally.

Wow! That was...

That was seriously quite quick. That was serious...

Did that even take you by surprise, how quick that was?

Not really. I'd normally fly them quite quick through obstacles.

Yeah. I mean, I'm not going to lie to you,

I was a little bit nervous watching, because you seemed to like going

quite close to some of the obstacles. Yeah, she scares me.

She scares you even. You're even scaring your wingman!

Flight confirmed. That was some serious girl PAW-er by Ellie,

who galloped round in one minute 43,

but Army Paws were still eight seconds behind Team Hurricane,

who remain in first place.

Next up in the air are the Flight Masterz.

Aviator Sam wants to become an aerial photographer.

Not sure why he'd want to take photos of aerials, though.

You've seen one, you've seen them all.

Wingdad Trevor is keen on his DIY, which is handy,

cos I think the Airmageddon loo is blocked.

No idea how. The name Flight Masterz came about because Sam says

he is a master of flying. Yeah, tough talk!

The Flight Masterz with a Z.

Masters with a Z. Yeah. Always with a Z, of course.

Who uses Ss these days? You've had a bit more time to work out

your tactics. What are you going to go with? What's your plan?

Near the finish, I'm just going to floor it along.

Right, so flooring it along.

Yeah. All right, guys, let's get you flying.

Aviators, stand by.

Fire up your motors, rev up your rotors.

Sam is a keen bird-watcher but today he'll need to be

eagle-eyed and avoid the WASP, who's soaring in the air

with the Air Marshall ready to play chicken with the Flight Masterz.

AIR MARSHALL: Flight Masterz launch in three, two, one.

BUZZER

Sam is up and I don't mind telling you that is

textbook droning already. Smooth as you like, and I like it smooth.

Through you go.

Down.

A little bit steadier than the previous two starts.

Very smooth, very nice.

He's almost gliding around the Airena.

Sam says that he's a fast learner.

He's learned this course as quickly as I can get Air Marshall

to put the kettle on. Air Marshall, what comes after S in the alphabet?

T. Don't mind if I do.

Milk and two sugars, please!

Letterboxes now, and Air Marshall has still not put a brew on,

which is a slight disappointment.

The WASP is getting angry out there.

Angry cos he can't get close to Sam and the Flight Masterz.

They posted themselves through the letterbox with aplomb.

Right through the middle.

Trevor checking the angles for Sam there as they head towards the gate.

Down, down.

Below the yellow markers. You're straight through.

So much smoke, you can barely see the drone.

They don't call it the foggy corridor for nothing, Will.

But Sam navigates his way through.

That was quite close.

Up and through. That's it. Well done. That's nice.

He's definitely speeding up.

Sam's growing in confidence here.

The way you find it easier to do it with.

Oh, Trevor. Little do you know that there's no easy way

to tackle the Vortex. That's it.

But Sam has made that look easy.

Through this side. Now he's adopted the semi-pro side-on stance

in the tower. What a player!

Last gate has been accounted for.

Just the simple task of the final pillars and the sprint to the line.

Sorry, Sammy. Schoolboy mistake, and Sam nearly tonks a pillar,

but he doesn't and he's home and dry.

Once more, we see a pillar nearly getting the better

of our aviator, but, yet again, our aviator gets through unscathed.

Played, Sam. Well played, Sam.

Time confirmed. Oh, this is so close.

It will take a force nine effort to remove Team Hurricane

from the top spot. Ellie and Army Paws remain in second.

Flight Masterz are bottom for now but, with such a good time,

will they stay there?

How was it? Nerve-racking. How do you feel it went?

Aviator Paul speaks German.

Zat is easy, I also speak ze German mit nein difficulty.

Wingdad Michael likes to canoe and play the trumpet,

although probably not at the same time.

Their drone has flames and it goes in the air.

No idea where the name Air Flames comes from, though.

Is it German? I'm nicht sure.

Yeah, I think I'm ready.

It should be quite a good fly today.

Yeah? Yeah. You feel like the conditions are right

Paul doesn't know it but he's got some really quick times to beat.

I like to beat a quick time.

My favourite's the old drumroll.

Shadow? Is that a resident drone I've not met yet?

He's going to have to speed up.

Paul is flying a good flight,

but the other teams were ferociously quick.

It's giving me the heebie-jeebies, this.

He's going to have to go quicker.

He's got a gate, then The Vortex.

As I was saying, it's a big, old, blowy wind tunnel of doom,

Oh, no. Paul has got Air Flames stuck to the top of a pillar.

And that could be game over.

Oh, he's stuck. It's not coming off.

on that first whack and then Air Flames

slid down the pole, like a fireman, to defeat.

What a whirlwind. Team Hurricane in first.

Both Army Paws and Flight Masterz did magnificently to also record

sub-two-minute times.

But sadly the Air Flames are about to become grounded flames.

That was pretty unlucky, man.

Yeah, it was pretty stressful, but... Yeah? ..it happens.

The Vortex. Everybody's worried about The Vortex

and it can claim its victims.

Yeah. Do you think your approach was wrong?

I think it was just going up. I was rushing it too much.

Yeah? I'm afraid, guys, that does mean that you are grounded.

So a knockout for one, but three teams are still in contention.

They're in their corners, waiting for the bell.

Welcome to The Drop.

Attached to each drone is a magnet.

Using that, aviators must pick up

as many payloads from the pillars as possible in the time allowed

and release them into their drop zone.

Miss or bounce out of the drop zone equals nul points - no points.

Difficulty rating - ten out of ten.

And these little blighters will barrage you from above,

from below and by your side.

They are the Bugs and are best avoided if you want to be the best.

The game has been set.

All instruments have been calibrated

and the drones are as ready as our pilots feel.

PILOTS: Yes!

Excellent. So, Abs, you were the quickest in the last round.

Yes. You must be feeling good going into this one?

Yes, very good. How are you going to make sure you can get your payload

in the target? I'm not sure I want to tell you that.

Because you don't want the others to hear?

and like you should do a good job.

Our three aviators will control the drones,

the wingmen have the controls that activate the magnet.

But overuse will run down the drone's battery,

so cue the flying vacuum cleaner.

Air Flames are up first,

then Army Paws, and Flight Masterz,

slowest out of the blocks.

Three drones in the air.

15 payloads to get into the target.

Hopefully, some of them will do it.

I can't see them getting all 15.

This is the opposite of easy,

whatever that word is.

in the undercarriage and you do not want that.

Flight Masterz are probably looking the neatest in terms of

their flying so far.

I'm going to predict that no-one will score in this game.

No, not yet. And believe me, Abs, Flight Masterz aren't going to here,

Looking back, we see Ellie and Nathanial

working beautifully together,

dipping low, then dropping their payload with only seconds remaining.

Drone-tastic.

We said at the start it wasn't going to be easy, but with time, practice,

and a great deal of patience, the Flight Masterz

and then Army Paws both dropped a payload in their drop zones.

Abs, meanwhile, failed to score, but he's about to win something -

a good grounding.

Yes! Well done.

So Ellie and Nathanial, you guys are going through, as well.

Did you enjoy that? It looked really tricky

and you had a few near misses.

I was shaking, my knees were just going like that and you're trying to

keep still. Oh, no.

That does mean, Abs, Abdullah, you guys are grounded.

using state-of-the-art targeting technology. It's the Dogfight.

Hit your opponent's sensors four times and you win.

Whilst doing that, don't get hit four times yourself.

Avoid the bothersome resident drones,

stay away from anything hot and fire-like and, as ever,

we've added laser tracers for your viewing pleasure.

Trying to make that difficult for both teams

will be one of our resident drones.

They'll be patrolling the no-fly zone, keeping order.

Let the drones off their leashes, re-holster the pooper scoopers

and put the slobbery tennis ball back in its bag.

It's time for the Dogfight.

Flight Masterz have a five-second advantage,

having dropped their payload first in the last game

but how crucial will that be? Is that waving?

Flight Masterz launch in three, two, one.

Flight Masterz make a dash for the gate.

As soon as they're through, they can start zapping Army Paws.

A look of determination from Ellie as Army Paws head up

and straight through their gate.

That was quick! That was so quick. Are you ready?

Like a gazelle of the skies,

Army Paws have cancelled out Flight Masterz' advantage.

But Sam and Trevor get off the first shots and she's hit.

Oh. Ellie was banking more than a supersaver in the city there,

but she got hit.

1-0. Army Paws, one hit, they've lost the one life.

Come back. Trying.

Ellie and Nathanial are continuing with their strategy, though -

wobble around a lot and shoot at anything.

Did they nearly hit it? Wow.

Yes, they did, Will.

And now they actually have hit.

Army Paws arced out to the left and then unleashed a laser beam

to the Masterz' vital area.

That is game, set and match to the Flight Masterz,

who win by default as Ellie lost her head and became a Flight un-Master.

Weird. That was quite a dramatic end to the Dogfight.

Ellie. There you are, Ellie's just there.

That's a very nifty piece of parking.

What went wrong? I don't know.
