Semi Finals 1 Airmageddon

Welcome to Airmageddon, the semifinals.

32 teams began this quest for air supremacy, but after crashes,

dashes and flights of fancy,

only eight of the UK's finest flyers remain.

Today, one of these four teams and their customised drones will win

a coveted place in the grand final, and the chance to take this trophy,

the title and overall glory!

But who will triumph?

Find out in Airmageddon, the semifinals.

Welcome to the semifinals here in the home of drone.

Take a look around you. This venue is hi-tech,

totally epic and truly spectacular.

But where would any sporting venue be without its competitors?

-Yeah, precisely. Yes.

So, we're going to fill it with four returning teams,

all heat winners in their own right, back for more drone-on-drone action,

taking each other on for a place in our grand final.

They're Rotortrismus.

Tom and wing-baby-bro Toby are next.

They are This Way Up, and Toby looks tired.

Our last semifinalists hoping to make a point

are Adam and Kirsty - they're Dragon Eye.

Excellent. Well, the first team to take on the Airsault course

is This Way Up, Tom and Toby.

Tom, you've been here before, right?

But how exciting is it to be back?

Yeah, it's really great. Just need to keep calm, keep focused.

You know, we nailed the first episode.

We just need to continue what we did.

Hopefully you can do it all again.

Flight Masterz, you want to make it to the final.

-Sam, how will you make that happen?

and make sure the WASP doesn't get in the way.

Surely the Airsault course needs no explanation by now?

Yes, it does. It's gone and changed.

It still comes equipped with the standard gates, pillars,

letterboxes and that fearsome foggy corridor of despair.

But this is the new Airsault Turbo XL,

so say bonjour to the new horizontal gate that needs a popping down.

Also say Guten Tag to the double windy,

double height Vortex with added crossbars.

Windy enough to blow your trolley-sized drone

to the shops and back.

Then whizz across the finish line, standard.

Four drones and one extremely difficult test

of hand-eye coordination, complete with extra gates,

an incredibly challenging new Vortex,

and one of our resident drones in full flight.

Well 'Ard Stinging Person is not what WASP stands for.

It's Weaponised Assault ShiP.

Either way, he's best avoided, because he's bad for your health.

First to return to the Airsault course are This Way Up.

Your aviator today is Bognor boy Tom,

who will be ably assisted, we hope,

by his brother Toby.

This Way Up zoomed around the Airsault course

in 1:48 in their heat.

Remember, anything sub-two minutes is supersonic.

How will they fare in today's semifinal?

How have you been preparing for this semifinal?

Well, we just put in extra practice at home.

Yeah? And obviously, it's a bit more difficult this time.

There's two extra obstacles.

Toby, as the wingman, have you been checking them out?

Well, just control,

and basically the same thing we did on the first obstacle course.

But I've heard that there's some more obstacle things.

Basically, do the same again, but a bit quicker.

Well comeback to the Airsault course, lads.

Tom, our cool, calm aviator,

and Toby, the enthusiastic wing-brother.

They were in the sub-two minute club last time around.

But how will they do with the tweaks we've made to the course?

This Way Up launch in three, two, one.

Tom's fave food is anything edible.

Good job, because he's eating up this course like a slap-up brekkie!

Oh, my God, you're going well fast.

Well fast is good, as long as you don't well crash,

because that would be well bad.

And that's bad in the bad sense, I mean.

Letterbox one taken at speed but whoa, whoa, whoa!

The metaphorical brakes are slamming on hard before letterbox two,

that was as hairy as my plughole!

Before the smoke comes, so you have to...

I think that was a touch too fast.

But they got away with it,

and Tom doesn't look too worried.

He could do this with his eyes closed, I reckon.

I sometimes commentate with my eyes closed, I'll show you.

And here we see This Way Up

approaching the...golden unicorn.

Beautifully done.

And now it's the...water jump?

-Oi! Pay attention!

Right, OK. Sorry. Foggy corridor,

not the water jump.

Exciting times here on the Airsault course,

it's the newfangled horizontal gate.

Zero problems there, and This Way Up

are setting a good standard here.

Come on, through, through. Yeah!

Down, through there.

And in the Vortex.

In the Vooortex,

as it should be now called,

as it's double the height.

Altitude sickness is a real possibility here.

Need to try that again, don't I?

Slipped out of there for a second,

but a quick re-entry and he's heading upwards.

-Yes!

-Toby's so good at the encouragement.

He's just like, "Yes!"

when he does well. It's good.

I tell you what, he's also encouraging

as they head for the last gate,

it's Mr WASP. Sparks are flying,

and he's keen to get in the way.

But Tom slips into overdrive and screams towards the chequered flag.

Divine. A near-perfect round there for This Way Up.

The only blips being when Tom had to stop himself slamming

into the letterboxes,

and the accidental side exit in the Vortex.

But a time of 1:38 is smoking.

Boys, what have you got to say about that?

-Nailed it.

-Absolutely nailed it.

-That's what you kept saying. Wow.

-Definitely really good.

-Good time.

-How does it feel out there?

Really nervous, but because I've done it before, you know,

it's not as nerve-racking.

Look at this guy's face. You seem so chilled out.

"Well, I've done it before."

Set cabin doors to manual,

because Leo and wing-uncle Scott

are next up with Rotortrismus.

In their heat, the lads completed the Airsault

in two minutes 26 before

going on to win the Dogfight 4-0.

But will Christmas come early for Rotortrismus today?

Yeah? How are you going to raise your game

to make sure you get through to the Dogfight?

Well, a wise man said YOLO.

And he's absolutely right.

Wearing blue, hoping not to feel blue if they do well today,

it's Rotortrismus.

Air Marshall, what makes you feel blue?

Thinking about my long-lost brother.

The Air Commodore? I've not seen him for years.

he's engineering a positive vibe here.

But WASP isn't enjoying Scott's banter.

I ain't your mum. That was a close shave on the second letterbox.

But Rotortrismus are going so well.

What could possibly go wrong here?

Much quicker through here than last time, yeah?

Scott looking for an improvement in the foggy corridor.

Easier said than done.

Wannabe farmer Leo ploughed his way through that. Oo-arr!

Poke your head up through it.

That's the same instructions you'd find

in a "how to put on a jumper" manual.

But Scott's talking about

the horizontal gate, I hope.

Yes, he was, and Leo has complied.

Over to the path.

The what? Do we have a path on the course?

Doesn't sound tricky.

This is smooth.

He's definitely flowing round nicely.

I don't think it's as quick as the previous round.

-But it could be quick enough.

That is an illegal Vortex entry,

the worst kind of entry, in my opinion.

Too high above the red marker.

He was carrying on like butter wouldn't melt in his mouth.

What will the Air Marshall have to say about this?

Aviator, repeat Vortex. Aviator, repeat Vortex.

-Oh, we went between the two.

Oh, I thought it was meant to go through...

Oh, no!

This is total chaos!

Leo has taken his eyes off Rotortrismus to argue his point,

and nearly crashes as a result.

Back into the Vortex for the second time, here.

Time is of the essence, mate. Go. Doesn't matter what happens.

Leo has lost a lot of time indeed so going hell for leather

seems to be his only hope.

Through. Run it, Leo. Run it full blast. Watch yourself.

Up. That's it. Down.

Get out of there. Straight through.

Get over that line.

I'll tell you something for nothing.

Leo has done amazingly to get back into the game and crosses the line.

This is the moment Rotortrismus's lives fell apart -

entering the Vortex too high.

Rules are there for a reason, people.

after their spiffing time of one minute 38.

Rotortrismus came home over a minute behind in two minutes 47.

Can one of the remaining teams save them by going slower?

How was that, Leo?

In the Vortex, there were two strips of tape,

so we just assumed we were meant to go through those but we weren't,

we were meant to go underneath the bottom one.

Scott, it sounds like you realised, didn't you?

I coaxed him there. We both made a mistake.

We shouldn't have assumed

it would be any different from the first round.

Our fault. Hopefully it's enough.

Third to take on the Airsault course are Sam and wing-dad Trevor

who go by the superhero name The Flight Masterz with a Z.

After clocking a very decent one minute 52 in their heat,

Sam went on to win the Dogfight by default

after poor old Ellie crashed out.

Worth it, though, to see Rachel's face.

Sam, you've had a little look around.

What do you make of the extra obstacles in the Airena today?

A little bit harder, especially that one over there.

Yes, the super-size Vortex.

It is going to be tricky. Trevor?

The horizontal gate, that looks quite a tricky one as well.

-What's your tactic?

-Steady, consistent

and just make sure we don't crash.

Yeah, always making sure you don't crash.

If I can give you one piece of advice,

it's make sure you don't crash.

This is fascinating from Flight Masterz.

Both teams before him have popped up

through the gate but keen swimmer Sam is going

around in order to dive through.

Minimal splash too. Excellent.

Double-size Vortex is next.

It's a whopper. But will Sam come a cropper?

He's got the basics right, unlike Leo.

which keeps This Way Up in top spot.

Rotortrismus remain bottom but with one team still to fly,

it's not game over yet.

I didn't even notice I'd got caught on the cable. I was, keep going.

He said, "cable", so I went up.

Would be easy to lose control and crash it but at least you recovered.

is Dragon Eye

led by Adam and wing-sister Kirsty.

Adam completed the course in two minutes 21

in the heat but captured the nation's hearts

with his general happiness and carefree attitudes to flight safety.

Oh, and he smashed the Dogfight 4-0 as well. Class act.

Now, Adam, I would describe your round in the heats as bouncy.

What have you been doing to make sure

that this time you're going to get through a bit smoother?

Erm... I think I've relaxed more.

I'm going to stay calmer and make sure I get better perspective.

Yeah. I think the first time,

with all the lights and the flames and stuff, kind of put us off a bit.

it was Dragon Eye who came down with a dose of the malfunctions.

Thanks to my positive thinking, and Adam's skill to a lesser degree,

they got home intact. Well done.

It went twisty on the Vortex.

That would be because you went so low and when you're really low,

-the ground effect can affect the turning.

-Ah!

But that was a good run.

-How did it feel?

-It was better than last time, I guess.

I think you did really well.

But let's find out from the Air Marshal how quick you were.

Sadly that means that Rotortrismus

are about to hear the two most-feared words

in the aviation industry.

and a place in our grand final.

As ever, the rules are simple but the game is unsimple.

Each team has a wrecking ball attached to their underbellies.

Using that, aviators must knock over 92 cans in their wall.

Lovely round number that.

So this is both speed and accuracy

but it's worth bearing in mind that those big balls

will make drone control a living nightmare.

Hoping to infest this semifinal and irritate the aviators

are these irksome blighters.

Evade them at all costs or they'll get in your grill.

Don't bother the BUGs.

Guys, you've got this far.

-Do you reckon you're going to get through to Dogfight?

-Yes.

Well, unfortunately, only two teams can.

Team Dragon Eye, Adam,

how much would it mean to you to get through to that round?

The hard thing in this game is not knocking the cans at the top -

that's easy - it's who has the skills to pick off

the remaining cans at the bottom.

There's more risk there of hitting the table with the wrecking balls.

Wing-dad Trev really earning his salt there.

Adam is throwing about, he's really finding his feet in the game.

Sorry, was I shouting?

He'll never get a job stacking cans

cos he's too good at knocking them over - all 92 of them.

It's Sam and the Flight Masterz.

As you'd expect from a semi,

it was a hard-fought battle for second

but This Way Up came through first, also knocking all the cans over,

meaning it's the end of the road for Dragon Eye, whose ball control

wasn't quite good enough on the day.

Unfortunately, where two teams go through,

one team is left behind and it does fall to me to say,

with genuine regret, guys, Team Dragon Eye,

you've had a great run, but unfortunately, you are grounded.

So, two surviving semifinalists with their targeting systems

locked on each other for victory.

Two gladiators of the air enter the combat zone once more.

It will be thumbs up for one and thumbs down for the other.

This is the Dogfight.

HE BARKS LIKE A DOG

That's the rules of the Dogfight in Dog for you.

For anyone not fluent in Dog, this is what must happen.

To make the grand final,

each team must zap their lasers at their opponents like fury

until they've struck their sensors four times.

Not getting hit yourself four times is the other thing to bear in mind.

Well, that and avoiding resident drones

like PIG or this cheeky chappie.

He's big, he's round, his feet are off the ground.

It's the GUARD, it's the GUARD.

Well 'ard. Don't mess, capisce?

I want to know if you've got any final words to say to each other

before the big one, the Dogfight.

OK, deep breaths, everyone.

This is the real deal.

One Dogfight, one winner,

one place in the big, shiny grand final up for grabs.

This Way Up will be heading up

five seconds after the Flight Masterz with a Z,

who have the advantage thanks to their wall-bashing success.

Air Marshall, do your thing.

Flight Masterz launch, three, two, one.

GUARD watches as Sam goes gate-bound.

Once through, his lasers become active.

Can Flight Masterz take advantage of that five seconds?

-They went out there really quick.

-Yeah!

I need to check that, but I think Tom broke the sound barrier

getting his way up through their gate.

And just like that, we're game on.

What is this tactic from Tom?

They're going for the old bouncy-bouncy technique.

-I've never seen that.

-Dodging.

It's working, though.

Tom dips down and dodges Flight Masterz's fire,

then bounces up and has a pop himself.

This bobbing technique from Tom makes them almost impossible to hit.

They chuck a laser right in Flight Masterz's face.

-Oh!

-One hit. That's great shooting.

Wing-dad Trev knows it. Look at the pain on his face there.

Their tactics are working.

I didn't expect it, but it looks like they are.

Yep, Tom and Toby are like two cool cucumbers in the fridge.

It's only 1-0, though, so it's all to play for here.

Sam shoots. He doesn't score.

Penalty, ref. Red card.

He's turning around for no reason.

Whoa, what's that?

This Way Up spin a doughnut, only narrowly missing the tower,

then bangaroo!

I thought it was coming in!

Just look at how Tom turned on a sixpence, gathered himself,

then provided Flight Masterz with a severe lasering.

2-0. Boom, boom, shake the room.

It's all too much for the GUARD. He's self-combusted!

And now they've lost a third.

That was careless. Perhaps the GUARD blowing his big end put Sam off.

Come on, we've got to get them.

Just look at Trevor's face. He's desperate to win here.

The GUARD, he's getting angry over there.

The GUARD has popped up again.

Sam misses again.

Hitting This Way Up is like trying to

grapple a slippery eel that's been covered in margarine,

because he never stays still.

It's up and down, left and right.

Correction - hitting This Way Up is achievable after all.
