So, what's the story in Balamory? Well, today in Balamory,

you can certainly feel the weather. It's a cold day.

And everyone here is busy going to work and school.

I wonder what adventures we'll get up to today. I'll hang up my coat.

what's this envelope doing here?

"Miss Hoolie" - it's for me!

I think I know what this might be.

I'll let you into a little secret. Today is my birthday.

I hope people remember. Someone already has.

But I wonder who.

-I'm making a cardboard boat for the nursery

and I wondered if you could tell me

how many sails should a sail boat have?

-That depends on what kind of sail boat.

Well, is it a clipper or a pirate ship?

Oh, a pirate ship! That'd be great!

I've got a book about pirate ships.

That's perfect! There's one, two, three, four, five, six sails!

-I love pirate ships.

The nursery wall will look fantastic with a pirate ship.

-This will put a smile back on Miss Hoolie's face.

Well, let's just say she wasn't her normal cheery self this morning.

Oh, you'd think she would be happy. It IS her birthday.

Oh, no! I forgot Miss Hoolie's birthday!

-How could I make it up to her?

-Well...you could give her a party.

-A party?

-Yes! A pirate party! Use the pirate ship as a decoration!

That's fantastic! We can do lots of party games

and wear costumes - pirate hats and flags... Wait a minute...

That's a lot of work.

Yes, we'll need help to get it ready for this afternoon.

-The ship's almost done.

-I'll go to Pocket and Sweets for cakes.

-That leaves the pirate costumes. I don't know where to start.

Oh, no, not at all! Come on in. So, what's the story in Balamory?

Well, it all started this morning...

I went to the nursery to show Miss Hoolie the boat I was making.

I wanted her advice on how many sails it should have,

but she seemed fed-up and suggested I go see PC Plum instead.

As usual, PC Plum was a great help.

He thought I should make a pirate ship and showed me a book

full of fantastic pirate pictures.

Then he explained why Miss Hoolie might be fed-up. It's her birthday.

I forgot all about it. PC Plum suggested we cheer her up

with a surprise pirate party! But we need to do it this afternoon.

-I was wondering what to do for Miss Hoolie's birthday.

-Great!

-We'll make it the best pirate party ever!

-What do you want me to do?

-Costumes.

-Costumes? Well, let's look in my "make do" box.

Oh, look. This could be a pirate headscarf.

-Arr...

-Fantastic. Do you have any pirate hats in there?

-No, but I could make some. Using this.

-Black paper?

-I'll show you.

All you have to do...

Fold it over like this.

Cut the shape here and I'll have two of them.

There we go.

The front and the back. Get some Blu-Tack.

There we go, you see.

All it needs now is a skull and crossbone.

-There we are.

Hey!

Thank you so much for today. This is the best pirate party ever.

So, what was the story in Balamory today?

Well, today was a special day because it's my birthday.

I arrived at the nursery this morning

to find a birthday card from PC Plum.

Spencer popped in to show me the cut-out boat for the nursery wall.

He wanted some tips on the size and shape of the sails for his boat.

He'd obviously forgotten it was my birthday.

I tried not to look too hurt and suggested he see PC Plum instead,

who's mad about sailing.

PC Plum thought Spencer could make a pirate ship

and showed him a picture book to get ideas.

Then PC Plum explained why I seemed a little fed-up. It's my birthday.

Spencer had forgotten all about it.

So they decided to throw a party to cheer me up - a pirate party!

Archie agreed to help, and he and Spencer set to work

making pirate costumes, scarves and hats.

Later, Spencer returned to the nursery with his finished ship

and told me to close my eyes for a surprise.

When I opened them, I saw the fantastic pirate ship he'd made.

There was Archie and PC Plum AND the children dressed as pirates!

They all wished me a happy birthday

and we had a fabulous pirate party!

They HAD remembered my birthday after all!

And do you know what? It was the best birthday surprise ever!
