We've only got five minutes, so get ready for your Blue Peter adventure.
Chances are, you've probably seen one of these before. It's a scooter.
Loads of fun, aren't they?
You can ride to your friend's house, you can ride around town
and when you get really confident on them, you can go quite fast.
Then there are other people who take it one step further.
Well, quite a lot further.
Freestyle scooter is taking life on two wheels to the next level,
using speed and skill to perform some frankly unbelievable stunts.
And right now, the guy who has performed the world's best trick
just so happens to live in Liverpool.
Jamie Hull can do things on a scooter most of us can only dream of.
By the age of 15, he's already one of the best in the UK.
So will he be able to pass on some of those skills to me?
Jamie, let's talk about how you've got to where you are now.
I've been riding for about five or six years now.
I just won the World's Best Trick in Barcelona.
Such a big achievement.
I did a double backflip, double tailwhip. Landed it second go.
I really want to give this a go,
but I feel like I need more safety gear on.
Yeah, what I wear is a helmet, a certified helmet,
some bum pads, shin pads so the scooter doesn't hit me
in the shins, and I have ankle pads as well so it doesn't do the same.
OK, so safety gear in place. Do you reckon I can do something today?
-You can. I'm feeling confident.
-I'm glad you are.
All right, then. Let's do it.
'So with all the correct gear on, Jamie's going to show me how to get
'the most out of my scooter
'and we begin with how to set off on a ramp or "dropping in".
'Which I'm told is harder than it looks.'
Your most comfortable foot, put it on the deck and whilst it's on,
you can put the other one to the side
and just drop in like this slowly.
-Then put it back on.
-Simple as that.
'I can confirm it is harder than it looks.
'But, slowly, I get the hang of it
'so Jamie thinks I could try a bigger ramp.
'What could possibly go wrong?'
'So that's why you need the safety gear.
'I'm fine and Jamie shows me where I'm going wrong.'
Just make sure your knees act like a suspension when you drop in
and that they go down and then when you're, like, in the middle,
stand up again so you've got your balance.
OK. So knees are suspension, keep lower down.
When do we start doing backflips?
'Yeah, maybe not.'
I want you to try and jump off the side up there.
-I'll show you first.
-Just like that.
Oh, that was it!
'Yes, that is me jumping off a ramp and loving it.
'But if I'm going to take on any really big jumps,
'I need to get used to the foam pit.'
'This pit allows riders to safely practice more advanced tricks,
'so Jamie wants me
'to get used to feeling the full force of the foam on my face.'
Here we go.
How was that, Jamie?
It was really good, just a bit more practice
and then you'll be able to get it better.
-Maybe now's a good time for you to show us what you can do.
I'm going to stay here for a sec.
'What I didn't mention before is that Jamie isn't just here to help me.
'Oh, no. He's here to train,
'because tomorrow, right here, it's the European Championships
'and he's competing. No biggie, then.'
It's the next morning, it's competition day. And, as you can see,
athletes have turned up from all over the world
-and they're excited to be here, aren't they? ALL:
And what they're about to do is awesome and it all happens in here.
There are two competitions today - the amateurs and the pros.
Jamie hasn't arrived yet, he's a pro, but the amateur competitors
are warming up and getting ready to show us what they're made of.
It is one of most exciting things I've been to for a long, long time.
I'm going to shut up, we're going to watch the action. Here we go.
These are the amateurs.
What's it going to be like this afternoon
when Jamie shows us what he can do? I cannot wait.
'It really is mind-blowing what these guys can do with a scooter
'and it just gets better and better.
'Then the pros arrive and Jamie sets foot on top of the ramp
'to begin his first run and he starts with this...'
And that's how you start a pro competition. Absolutely flawless.
Every single move executed with perfection.
'With Jamie's second run, he goes even bigger, and who can blame him?
'Finish in the top five and he earns a place at the World Championships.
'So, as the judges make up their mind,
'you can really feel the tension.
'Brilliantly, he finishes fifth,
'so he is going to the World Championships.
'A great finish to a great day.'
I have been nothing short of inspired
and I've been working on my latest trick. Do you want to see it?
Here we go.
See. There you go.
It's amazing what a bit of inspiration can do for you, isn't it?
-Was that good, Barney?
-Get down, Jamie.
OK, fine, Jamie did the jump. But I was inspired. Thanks for that.
