Hello, my name's Emilia. | 0:09:07 | 0:09:09
I was looking to see how far I can see. | 0:09:09 | 0:09:12
What can you see? | 0:09:12 | 0:09:14
Look... | 0:09:14 | 0:09:16
there's the bridge and the river, | 0:09:16 | 0:09:20
it's amazing. | 0:09:20 | 0:09:22
But if it was very, very dark, I don't think I would see as much, | 0:09:22 | 0:09:27
and it's very dark in tonight's Bedtime Story | 0:09:27 | 0:09:30
about a little boy called Chinoo, | 0:09:30 | 0:09:32
who lives a long way away, near the Arctic Circle. | 0:09:32 | 0:09:36
It's very cold there, and in winter the days can be so short | 0:09:36 | 0:09:40
that it doesn't really get light at all. | 0:09:40 | 0:09:43
The story's called The Big Dark. | 0:09:43 | 0:09:47
In a distant, dark, cold land, lived little Chinoo with his parents, | 0:09:49 | 0:09:54
in a house built of snow. | 0:09:54 | 0:09:56
It was winter and Chinoo was fed up. | 0:09:56 | 0:10:01
The Big Cold had frozen the sea solid, so he couldn't go fishing. | 0:10:01 | 0:10:05
The Big Wind blew nearly every day, so he couldn't play outside. | 0:10:05 | 0:10:11
And the Big Dark was everywhere... | 0:10:11 | 0:10:14
All the time. | 0:10:14 | 0:10:16
One morning, when Chinoo looked outside into the Big Dark, | 0:10:16 | 0:10:22
all was quiet and still. | 0:10:22 | 0:10:25
"Come, little Chinoo", said Mama and Papa, "It's time to go." | 0:10:25 | 0:10:30
"Where?" asked Chinoo. | 0:10:30 | 0:10:33
"To the sea," they said. | 0:10:33 | 0:10:36
So, Chinoo followed his parents' footprints through the snow. | 0:10:36 | 0:10:41
Soon, he saw some big, wide tracks. | 0:10:42 | 0:10:45
Chinoo scampered after them and found a young polar bear | 0:10:45 | 0:10:50
heading for the sea. | 0:10:50 | 0:10:52
"Want to play a game?" asked Chinoo. | 0:10:52 | 0:10:55
"Oh, yes please," said the polar bear. | 0:10:55 | 0:10:59
So, they played hide-and-seek. | 0:10:59 | 0:11:02
The polar bear hid, while Chinoo counted to ten. | 0:11:02 | 0:11:07
"One... | 0:11:07 | 0:11:10
"two, three, four, five, six... | 0:11:10 | 0:11:15
"seven, eight, nine, ten... | 0:11:15 | 0:11:20
I'm coming!" | 0:11:20 | 0:11:22
"Oh, this is easy!", thought Chinoo. "Just follow the tracks." | 0:11:22 | 0:11:27
"Found you", giggled Chinoo, now it's my go. | 0:11:27 | 0:11:32
But, before the bear could start counting, | 0:11:32 | 0:11:35
Chinoo heard his parents calling - | 0:11:35 | 0:11:38
"Come, little Chinoo, hurry up or we'll miss it." | 0:11:38 | 0:11:42
"Miss what?" asked Chinoo. | 0:11:42 | 0:11:46
"You'll see," they replied. | 0:11:46 | 0:11:50
So, Chinoo followed his parents' footprints through the snow again. | 0:11:50 | 0:11:55
Soon, he saw a set of small, round prints. | 0:11:56 | 0:12:00
He scampered after them and found... | 0:12:00 | 0:12:03
a wolf cub heading for the sea. | 0:12:03 | 0:12:07
"Want to play a game?" asked Chinoo. | 0:12:07 | 0:12:10
"Oh, yes please," replied the wolf cub. | 0:12:10 | 0:12:13
Chinoo took a ball out of his bag and threw it as far as he could. | 0:12:14 | 0:12:19
"Yippee!" said the wolf cub, | 0:12:19 | 0:12:22
who scampered after it and brought it back. | 0:12:22 | 0:12:25
But before Chinoo could throw it again, he heard his parents calling. | 0:12:25 | 0:12:30
"Come on, Chinoo, hurry or we'll miss it." | 0:12:30 | 0:12:35
"Miss what?" asked Chinoo. | 0:12:35 | 0:12:38
"You'll see," they replied. | 0:12:38 | 0:12:42
Once again, Chinoo plodded on, | 0:12:44 | 0:12:46
following his parents' footprints through the snow. | 0:12:46 | 0:12:49
Soon, he saw a set of enormous, wide tracks. | 0:12:49 | 0:12:54
He scampered after them and found... | 0:12:54 | 0:12:58
a young walrus and a daddy walrus galumphing through the snow. | 0:12:58 | 0:13:03
"Want to play a game?" asked Chinoo. | 0:13:05 | 0:13:07
"What?" huffed the daddy walrus. | 0:13:07 | 0:13:11
"No, no, no, no, no, we're going to the sea and we're very late." | 0:13:11 | 0:13:17
Chinoo's legs suddenly felt really tired. | 0:13:17 | 0:13:20
"It's such a long way to the sea," he said. | 0:13:20 | 0:13:25
"I'm tired of walking and I want to play." | 0:13:25 | 0:13:28
"How about a lift?" offered the daddy walrus. | 0:13:28 | 0:13:33
"Oh, thank you," said Chinoo. | 0:13:33 | 0:13:36
Quickly, he climbed on board. | 0:13:36 | 0:13:38
It was the wobbliest ride ever, | 0:13:38 | 0:13:41
like sitting on a giant jelly. | 0:13:41 | 0:13:45
Soon, they caught up with Mama and Papa, | 0:13:45 | 0:13:49
and together they walked on through the Big Dark. | 0:13:49 | 0:13:52
Chinoo was amazed to see so many tracks in the snow, | 0:13:54 | 0:13:57
all heading in the same direction. | 0:13:57 | 0:14:00
At last, as they rounded a corner, they saw the frozen sea. | 0:14:00 | 0:14:07
The shore was lined with animals of all sorts, | 0:14:07 | 0:14:11
all watching the lightening sky. | 0:14:11 | 0:14:15
Chinoo slid off the walrus's back. | 0:14:15 | 0:14:19
"What's happening?" he asked. | 0:14:19 | 0:14:22
"Shh," said Mama, "just watch and wait." | 0:14:22 | 0:14:28
Chinoo watched and waited... | 0:14:30 | 0:14:33
and waited and watched, | 0:14:33 | 0:14:35
and then, very, very slowly, it happened. | 0:14:35 | 0:14:40
"Oh... Oh, look!", said Chinoo. | 0:14:40 | 0:14:46
"Mmm!" said the animals. "The sun!" | 0:14:48 | 0:14:53
"At last," whispered Mama. | 0:14:55 | 0:14:57
"The Big Dark is over, the sun will shine and the ice will melt." | 0:14:57 | 0:15:03
"We can go fishing again and play outside any time," said Papa. | 0:15:03 | 0:15:08
"Yippee!" cried Chinoo. | 0:15:08 | 0:15:11
He skipped all the way home and he didn't feel tired at all. | 0:15:11 | 0:15:16
And that story was called The Big Dark. | 0:15:18 | 0:15:21
Didn't the sun reflecting on the snow look lovely? | 0:15:21 | 0:15:26
It must have been exciting seeing the sun, | 0:15:26 | 0:15:28
after it being dark for so long. | 0:15:28 | 0:15:31
I wonder what else I can see if I look over here? | 0:15:31 | 0:15:35
Maybe I can see the sun. | 0:15:36 | 0:15:38
Well, while I look, it's time for you to go to bed, | 0:15:40 | 0:15:44
and I'll see you soon for another story. | 0:15:44 | 0:15:46
Night-night. | 0:15:46 | 0:15:48
Now, what can I see over here? | 0:15:48 | 0:15:51
