Oh, hello. I'm Sheila. | 0:28:09 | 0:28:11
I was just looking up at the moon. | 0:28:11 | 0:28:15
It looks so big and round and bright. | 0:28:15 | 0:28:20
Sometimes when you stand on tiptoe and reach up, | 0:28:20 | 0:28:24
you think you can nearly touch it. | 0:28:24 | 0:28:26
Well, there's a moon in tonight's story, | 0:28:26 | 0:28:30
it's by David Conway and Dubravka Kolanovic. | 0:28:30 | 0:28:34
And the story is called Shine Moon Shine. | 0:28:34 | 0:28:38
One snowy night in a great big city, | 0:28:40 | 0:28:44
the moon fell from the sky | 0:28:44 | 0:28:47
and landed on top of a very tall building. | 0:28:47 | 0:28:51
The people in the neighbourhood tried to put the moon back into the sky | 0:28:51 | 0:28:56
but every time they tried, the moon fell again. | 0:28:56 | 0:29:00
That night, a young boy named Ata sat with the moon to keep it company. | 0:29:00 | 0:29:06
the moon warmed towards Ata for his kindness | 0:29:06 | 0:29:09
and told him why it had fallen out of the night sky | 0:29:09 | 0:29:12
and why it did not want to return. | 0:29:12 | 0:29:15
"It's so dark up there," the moon told Ata. | 0:29:15 | 0:29:19
"It makes me feel so lonely." | 0:29:19 | 0:29:21
Ata wanted to help the moon so the following morning | 0:29:21 | 0:29:25
he got up early and captured sunbeams in a bucket | 0:29:25 | 0:29:29
and that night, he carried them to the very tall building. | 0:29:29 | 0:29:33
Ata climbed the stairs higher and higher, | 0:29:33 | 0:29:36
and when he reached the top where the moon sat pale and pensive, | 0:29:36 | 0:29:40
he released the sunbeams into the inky sky. | 0:29:40 | 0:29:45
When this was done, the dark night didn't look so dark any more. | 0:29:45 | 0:29:50
But the sunbeams didn't stay, and as quickly as they had appeared, | 0:29:50 | 0:29:54
they melted away. | 0:29:54 | 0:29:57
The next day, Ata found a box of old torches | 0:29:57 | 0:30:01
and carried them to the very tall building. | 0:30:01 | 0:30:04
Again, Ata climbed the stairs higher and higher, | 0:30:04 | 0:30:08
and when he reached the very top, | 0:30:08 | 0:30:10
Ata filled the night with beacons of light. | 0:30:10 | 0:30:14
When this was done, the dark night didn't look so dark any more. | 0:30:14 | 0:30:20
But, the beacons of light began to wane and slowly grew dimmer. | 0:30:20 | 0:30:25
Then one by one, they all went out. | 0:30:25 | 0:30:29
On the third day, Ata found a ladder | 0:30:29 | 0:30:33
and carried this to the very tall building. | 0:30:33 | 0:30:36
Once again, Ata climbed the stairs higher and higher, | 0:30:36 | 0:30:40
and when he reached the very top, Ata pushed his hands | 0:30:40 | 0:30:44
through the cold dark night and made holes to let the daylight in. | 0:30:44 | 0:30:49
But the holes in the tender night didn't stay | 0:30:49 | 0:30:52
and slowly began to close until the sky was very dark again. | 0:30:52 | 0:30:59
Ata sat in the roof's cold snow, | 0:30:59 | 0:31:02
sad that the night could not have a moon, | 0:31:02 | 0:31:05
and sad that the moon would never have a home. | 0:31:05 | 0:31:09
As the tears fell from his eyes and landed on the soft white snow, | 0:31:09 | 0:31:14
they became cold, so cold, that they began to freeze. | 0:31:14 | 0:31:20
When Ata noticed this he stopped crying | 0:31:20 | 0:31:23
and picked up one of his frozen tears. | 0:31:23 | 0:31:26
As it glistened in the darkness, he had an idea. | 0:31:26 | 0:31:30
Ata gathered up his frozen tears from the soft white snow | 0:31:30 | 0:31:34
and threw them far and wide into the inky sky. | 0:31:34 | 0:31:39
"If you go back home now," said Ata to the moon, | 0:31:39 | 0:31:43
"You'll never be lonely again." | 0:31:43 | 0:31:46
The moon trusted Ata | 0:31:46 | 0:31:48
and slowly but surely sailed away up into the darkness. | 0:31:48 | 0:31:55
Then Ata cried at the top of his voice, "Shine, moon, shine!" | 0:31:55 | 0:32:02
As Ata said this, | 0:32:02 | 0:32:04
the moon's bright beams poured into the frozen tears, | 0:32:04 | 0:32:09
filling them with such rich moonlight | 0:32:09 | 0:32:12
that they lit up the night in a spectacular display. | 0:32:12 | 0:32:15
All the people in the neighbourhood cheered and sang and clapped | 0:32:15 | 0:32:20
and danced as the moon illuminated a new night sky. | 0:32:20 | 0:32:25
For now the night didn't look so dark any more | 0:32:25 | 0:32:28
and thanks to Ata and his frozen tears, | 0:32:28 | 0:32:32
the moon was never lonely again. | 0:32:32 | 0:32:36
That story was called Shine Moon Shine. | 0:32:36 | 0:32:41
Well, now the moon is happy, it must be time for you to go to bed. | 0:32:41 | 0:32:47
I'll see you soon for another story. | 0:32:47 | 0:32:49
Night-night. I'm just going to go and say goodnight to the moon. | 0:32:49 | 0:32:54
Goodnight, moon. | 0:32:58 | 0:33:00
