Oh, hello! I'm Lulu. | 0:33:05 | 0:33:08
I was telling Mr Penguin that although I love the winter time, | 0:33:08 | 0:33:12
it does mean I wear extra layers of clothes to keep me warm and cosy. | 0:33:12 | 0:33:17
There are penguins in tonight's bedtime story, | 0:33:17 | 0:33:20
who are quite a long way from home. | 0:33:20 | 0:33:23
The story, by Penny Ives, is called Celestine And The Penguins. | 0:33:23 | 0:33:28
Celestine was all ready for winter. | 0:33:28 | 0:33:31
The garden was still bright with a few late flowers, | 0:33:31 | 0:33:34
and yellow leaves waving lazily from the trees. | 0:33:34 | 0:33:38
"Why won't you snow?" she shouted at the sky. | 0:33:38 | 0:33:41
"It's supposed to be cold!" | 0:33:41 | 0:33:44
The next day was just as warm when Celestine went out to play. | 0:33:44 | 0:33:48
She did her best to pretend it had snowed, | 0:33:48 | 0:33:52
but mud ducks and mud balls are horrible and brown, she decided. | 0:33:52 | 0:33:57
I'll have to make some lovely, white snow for myself. | 0:33:57 | 0:34:00
"Ta-da," cried Celestine, | 0:34:00 | 0:34:03
throwing cotton wool balls into the air. | 0:34:03 | 0:34:06
But each one fell straight to the ground. | 0:34:06 | 0:34:09
"Oh dear," she sighed. "Cotton wool is too lumpy. | 0:34:09 | 0:34:13
"What else can I try? | 0:34:13 | 0:34:15
"Hooray," sang Celestine, | 0:34:15 | 0:34:19
throwing handfuls of flour into the air. | 0:34:19 | 0:34:22
But that just made her cough. "I know," she smiled. | 0:34:22 | 0:34:25
"Little pieces of paper will be just right. | 0:34:25 | 0:34:28
"Yippee," she shouted. | 0:34:28 | 0:34:30
"It's snowing!" | 0:34:30 | 0:34:33
Just then, Celestine caught sight of something | 0:34:33 | 0:34:37
out of the corner of her eye. | 0:34:37 | 0:34:39
She stopped, and very slowly turned around. | 0:34:39 | 0:34:44
Behind her, | 0:34:45 | 0:34:47
the garden was bobbing with lots and lots | 0:34:47 | 0:34:50
and lots of baby penguins, all milling about. | 0:34:50 | 0:34:54
"Oh, my goodness," squeaked Celestine. | 0:34:54 | 0:34:58
"Where did you all come from?" | 0:34:58 | 0:35:00
"We're lost," said one little penguin. | 0:35:00 | 0:35:04
"A long way from home," sighed another. | 0:35:04 | 0:35:07
"Can we stay with you?" asked a third. | 0:35:07 | 0:35:11
"How did you get here?" asked Celestine. | 0:35:11 | 0:35:14
One penguin began to explain. | 0:35:14 | 0:35:16
"We come from a cold place, far away | 0:35:16 | 0:35:20
"and we were huddled fast asleep in our nursery," he began. | 0:35:20 | 0:35:24
"Our mums and dads had gone fishing for dinner when a storm began. | 0:35:24 | 0:35:28
"The wind blew, the sea roared, and then, crack, | 0:35:28 | 0:35:32
"the ice split in two and we were adrift. | 0:35:32 | 0:35:35
"We were carried on the waves, | 0:35:35 | 0:35:38
"further and further from home, up and down, up and down. | 0:35:38 | 0:35:43
"We called and called and as the sea got warmer and warmer, | 0:35:43 | 0:35:48
"our iceberg got smaller and smaller and smaller! | 0:35:48 | 0:35:52
"But, just in time, we landed on a little beach. | 0:35:52 | 0:35:56
"Straight away, we set off to look for snow. | 0:35:56 | 0:35:59
"We walked and walked and walked | 0:35:59 | 0:36:02
"and walked, until we found your lovely white garden. | 0:36:02 | 0:36:07
"But this isn't real snow," said one of the baby penguins sadly. | 0:36:07 | 0:36:12
"It's not cold and crunchy, or sparkly or slidy. | 0:36:12 | 0:36:16
"And now we're too hot | 0:36:16 | 0:36:19
"and we want to go home," wailed the littlest penguin. | 0:36:19 | 0:36:23
"I'm very sorry," sighed Celestine, looking at the pieces of paper. | 0:36:23 | 0:36:28
"I did my best." | 0:36:28 | 0:36:30
She sat down and thought for a moment. | 0:36:30 | 0:36:33
"I know what to do," she said happily. | 0:36:33 | 0:36:35
"I've got a brilliant idea. Come with me." | 0:36:35 | 0:36:38
"This is called a freezer," announced Celestine. | 0:36:38 | 0:36:43
"It's very cold in here. You'll like it!" | 0:36:43 | 0:36:47
"Careful, careful, please, no pushing. | 0:36:47 | 0:36:50
"There's room for everyone if I take these things out." | 0:36:50 | 0:36:53
But there wasn't quite. "Mmm," thought Celestine. | 0:36:53 | 0:36:57
Then she had another excellent idea. | 0:36:58 | 0:37:02
"Celestine, what are you doing? | 0:37:02 | 0:37:06
"I can hear you from the hall." "Nothing... | 0:37:06 | 0:37:10
"just playing with a few baby penguins." | 0:37:10 | 0:37:13
Celestine took lollies from the freezer | 0:37:13 | 0:37:15
and found elastic bands in a drawer. | 0:37:15 | 0:37:18
"Come on," she cried, "with these slippery lollies on our feet, | 0:37:18 | 0:37:23
"we can go ice lolly skating. | 0:37:23 | 0:37:26
"How about making a pea and ice slide?" | 0:37:26 | 0:37:30
But when Celestine looked down at the floor, | 0:37:30 | 0:37:33
what a mess! | 0:37:33 | 0:37:35
It had begun to look like green soup. | 0:37:35 | 0:37:38
"Mmm," thought Celestine. | 0:37:38 | 0:37:41
"Let's play upstairs instead. Follow me to the bathroom. | 0:37:41 | 0:37:46
"I've just had the best idea yet! | 0:37:46 | 0:37:49
"Let's make ice cream bergs," said Celestine, | 0:37:49 | 0:37:53
"but this time, try not to make so much mess!" | 0:37:53 | 0:37:56
They were having a lovely, sticky, splashy time, | 0:37:56 | 0:38:01
when somebody knocked at the door. | 0:38:01 | 0:38:03
"Who's there?" asked Celestine. | 0:38:03 | 0:38:07
"It's Mummy," came the reply. | 0:38:07 | 0:38:10
Then Mummy opened the door. | 0:38:10 | 0:38:12
"Celestine, what are you doing?" she shrieked. | 0:38:12 | 0:38:17
"I told you," explained Celestine. | 0:38:17 | 0:38:20
"I was playing with baby penguins | 0:38:20 | 0:38:23
"and Mum, they've been ever so naughty!" | 0:38:23 | 0:38:28
Celestine tried to explain everything. | 0:38:28 | 0:38:31
"I see," said Mrs Duck, when Celestine had finished. | 0:38:32 | 0:38:36
"Their parents must be very, very worried. | 0:38:36 | 0:38:40
"These little penguins need to go home, straight away." | 0:38:40 | 0:38:44
Mrs Duck and Celestine | 0:38:44 | 0:38:46
squeezed all the little penguins onto the bus | 0:38:46 | 0:38:49
and together they set off towards the sea. | 0:38:49 | 0:38:52
Down at the harbour, an explorer ship was getting ready to set sail. | 0:38:52 | 0:38:58
"Don't worry, Mrs Duck," the Captain promised. | 0:38:58 | 0:39:02
"I'll see all these baby penguins safely back home." | 0:39:02 | 0:39:06
"Thank you, Celestine," called the penguins | 0:39:06 | 0:39:09
as they jumped on board, waving goodbye with their tickets. | 0:39:09 | 0:39:12
"Goodbye, goodbye," called Celestine. | 0:39:12 | 0:39:15
As the ship chugged off towards the horizon, | 0:39:15 | 0:39:19
Celestine felt something soft and cold, | 0:39:19 | 0:39:22
tickle her cheek. | 0:39:22 | 0:39:25
She looked up at the sky. | 0:39:25 | 0:39:27
Oh! It was snowing! | 0:39:28 | 0:39:31
"Hooray!" she danced. | 0:39:31 | 0:39:34
"Tomorrow I can play in the snow all day! | 0:39:34 | 0:39:38
"Of course you can," smiled mum, | 0:39:38 | 0:39:41
"after you help me clean up all that mess." | 0:39:41 | 0:39:45
And that story was called Celestine And The Penguins. | 0:39:46 | 0:39:50
I'm so glad the penguins got home safely and it finally snowed. | 0:39:50 | 0:39:54
I hope you've tidied up just like Celestine | 0:39:54 | 0:39:57
and are nice and cosy wherever you are, | 0:39:57 | 0:40:00
because it's time for you to go to bed. | 0:40:00 | 0:40:03
I'll see you soon for another story. Night night! | 0:40:03 | 0:40:07
