I'm Gary. Merry Christmas. Are you having a good time? I love Christmas.

Can you see all these elephants? They're waiting for Papa Red.

Let me tell you about Papa Red in tonight's bedtime story.

It's by David McKee and it's called Elmer And Papa Red.

Elmer the patchwork elephant smiled.

It was two days before Papa Red's visit. The youngsters were excited.

"Take them somewhere, Elmer," said an elephant. "We'll prepare the gifts."

"Come on," Elmer called. "We'll get the tree."

The young elephants ran after Elmer. "Are we off to Papa Red?" they asked.

"Close by," said Elmer. "Have you seen him?" Elmer smiled. "Yes."

For the rest of the walk, they asked about Papa Red.

The walk went up and up.

The jungle became pine trees and then for the first time, they saw snow!

Elmer went to choose a tree.

"Hello" said a moose.

"Let them see Papa Red tomorrow, but keep them hidden. We'll be busy."

"We won't bother you," said Elmer. Elmer chose a tree.

The youngsters helped to carry it.

"Straight to bed when we get home," said Elmer.

The next day, everybody helped to decorate the tree.

"Presents!" shouted the youngsters. Presents were placed around the tree.

When it was ready, the other animals admired it. "Wonderful!" they said.

Later, the big elephants were asleep, and Elmer collected the youngsters.

"This is your chance to see Papa Red. Hide where you can see him."

The youngsters hid.

Then, out of the sky came six moose, pulling a sleigh carrying Papa Red.

Elmer helped load the presents into the sleigh. "Thanks," said Papa Red.

Then he winked. "I'm glad we weren't seen!" Papa Red flew off.

The young ones rushed out, shouting, "We saw him! He took the presents."

Elmer said, "We give.

"Papa Red takes the presents to whoever needs them the most."

Once everyone was asleep, Elmer tiptoed among the young elephants.

He left the present Papa Red had given them. Elmer smiled.

"Good old Papa Red," he said.

And that story was called Elmer And Papa Red. Time to go to sleep now.

So you're ready for more Christmas fun tomorrow.

Night-night, and merry Christmas.
