Do you know what 'jabber-jubber-nou-pou-lou' means?

You don't? No, neither do I.

I've looked in the dictionary, the encyclopaedia, the phrasebook,

I've searched online. Nothing, I don't even know what language it is.

Do you?

Maybe tonight's bedtime story will help.

The story is by Gary Parsons and it's called Krong!

Carl, and his dog Armando,

were playing in the garden when a spaceship landed.

Out stepped an alien, and an alien dog.

"Hello," said Carl.

"Woof," said Armando.

"Krong," said the alien.

"Zoff," said the alien dog.

Carl ran into the house to get Mum.

"Mum!" Carl shouted.

"There's someone in the garden

"who doesn't speak English and he's got a dog."

"Perhaps he speaks French," said Carl's mum.

Carl ran back into the garden.

"Bonjour," said Carl. That's 'hello' in French.

"Ouah, ouah," said Armando.

"Jabber-choober," said the alien.

"Zoff," said the alien dog.

"Dad!" Carl shouted.

"There's someone in the garden

"who doesn't speak English or French and he's got a dog."

"Well, perhaps he speaks Spanish," said Carl's dad.

Carl ran back into the garden.

"Hola," said Carl. That's 'hello' in Spanish.

"Guau, guau," said Armando.

"Nabber-nou-ba-nou," said the alien.

"Zoff," said the alien dog.

"Mum, Dad!" Carl shouted,

"The person in the garden doesn't speak English, or French,

"or Spanish, nor does his dog!"

"Perhaps he speaks Japanese," said Carl's mum and dad.

Carl ran back into the garden.

"Konnichiwa," said Carl. That's 'hello' in Japanese.

"Won, won," said Armando.

"Jabber-jubber-nou-pou-lou," said the alien, holding out a present.

"Mum! Dad!" shouted Carl.

"The person doesn't speak English, or French, or Spanish,

"or Japanese and nor does his dog,

"but he's got a present, and it might be for me!"

"Has he got one eye, yellow skin,

"four fingers and a spaceship?" asked Carl's dad.

"Uh-huh," said Carl.

"And a dog that only says 'Zoff'?" said Mum.

"That's right!" said Carl.

"Well, that'll be your uncle Phil from the planet Nou," said Dad.

"He's come to visit," said Mum. "And he speaks Noubenese."

Carl raced back outside.

"Krong!" said Carl. That's 'hello' in Noubenese.

"Krong," said uncle Phil.

"Zoff," said uncle Phil's dog.

"Zoff," said Armando.

"Wow!"

And that story was called Krong!

That's why I couldn't find out what 'jabber-jubber-nou-pou-lou' meant,

I didn't have a Noubenese dictionary.

Ah! Here's the right one.

It means, "I'm sorry, I don't speak anything other than Noubenese."

Well, this translatathon helped.

It would have been very helpful for that story.

I wonder what the Noubenese is for 'goodnight'.
