CBeebies Bedtime Story. | 0:18:03 | 0:18:05
Where did all of this come from? | 0:18:06 | 0:18:09
Hello! | 0:18:10 | 0:18:11
I'm Meera. | 0:18:11 | 0:18:13
Look at all of these treasures under the bed. | 0:18:13 | 0:18:17
There are shells... | 0:18:17 | 0:18:21
and buttons... | 0:18:21 | 0:18:24
and beads, | 0:18:24 | 0:18:25
with lots and lots of storybooks. | 0:18:25 | 0:18:29
Do you know who put them there? | 0:18:29 | 0:18:31
I do. | 0:18:31 | 0:18:32 | |
I think it was Weevil, Floot and Ferdinand. | 0:18:32 | 0:18:36
They are storytellers | 0:18:36 | 0:18:38
and I am going to tell you their story now. | 0:18:38 | 0:18:42
It's by Jenny Nimmo and Gwen Millward | 0:18:42 | 0:18:45
and it's called The Beasties. | 0:18:45 | 0:18:48
The Beasties came to Daisy's house on a night when she couldn't sleep. | 0:18:51 | 0:18:56
Her new room was too strange and her new bed was too big. | 0:18:56 | 0:19:02
As she lay awake, listening to the sounds in the street, | 0:19:02 | 0:19:06
she didn't see Weevil, Floot and Ferdinand | 0:19:06 | 0:19:10
creep into her room. | 0:19:10 | 0:19:12
She didn't see them spread their treasures underneath her bed. | 0:19:12 | 0:19:17
There were shells and buttons, feathers and pearls, | 0:19:17 | 0:19:23
beans and flowers, | 0:19:23 | 0:19:26
silver and gold. | 0:19:26 | 0:19:28
As Daisy stared into the dark, | 0:19:28 | 0:19:31
she heard a clicking sound. | 0:19:31 | 0:19:34
"Huh! What was that?" Daisy's heart went pitter-pat. | 0:19:34 | 0:19:39
Was it a tree, tapping at the window? | 0:19:39 | 0:19:42
No. | 0:19:42 | 0:19:44 | |
It sounded like... | 0:19:44 | 0:19:47
a story. | 0:19:47 | 0:19:48
CLICK, CLICK, CLICK, CLICK! | 0:19:48 | 0:19:51
"This feather belonged to a beautiful bird," said Weevil, | 0:19:51 | 0:19:57
in his clickety voice. Click-click-click. | 0:19:57 | 0:20:00
"When I was young, I travelled on a sailing ship. | 0:20:00 | 0:20:04
"I used to feed a beautiful bird with crumbs from a biscuit tin. | 0:20:04 | 0:20:09
"When the ship was wrecked in a terrible storm, | 0:20:09 | 0:20:13
"the sailors escaped in their boats. | 0:20:13 | 0:20:17
"But I was left alone on a shore, where dangerous creatures lived. | 0:20:17 | 0:20:23
"But then, down came my friend, the beautiful bird, | 0:20:23 | 0:20:28
"just in time to rescue me. | 0:20:28 | 0:20:31
"She gave me this feather, for friendship | 0:20:31 | 0:20:35
"and that's the end of my story." Click-click-click. | 0:20:35 | 0:20:40
Daisy closed her eyes. | 0:20:41 | 0:20:43
She dreamed that she was in the sky, | 0:20:43 | 0:20:46
flying with the beautiful bird. | 0:20:46 | 0:20:49
The very next night, as Daisy lay awake, | 0:20:50 | 0:20:53
she heard a musical sound. | 0:20:53 | 0:20:55
"Oh! What was that?" | 0:20:55 | 0:20:58
Daisy's heart went pitter-pat. | 0:20:58 | 0:21:00
Was it someone whistling a tune? | 0:21:00 | 0:21:03
No. | 0:21:03 | 0:21:05 | |
It sounded like... | 0:21:05 | 0:21:07
a story. | 0:21:07 | 0:21:09
"This button was stitched to a princess's coat," piped Floot, | 0:21:11 | 0:21:16
in his musical voice. | 0:21:16 | 0:21:18
"When the princess was small, | 0:21:18 | 0:21:20
"I used to sing her to sleep. | 0:21:20 | 0:21:23
"One day, in a game of hide and seek, | 0:21:23 | 0:21:27
"the princess disappeared. | 0:21:27 | 0:21:31
"I searched for my princess everywhere. | 0:21:31 | 0:21:34
"I thought she was lost for ever. | 0:21:34 | 0:21:38
"And then, in the forest, | 0:21:38 | 0:21:41
"one moonlit night, | 0:21:41 | 0:21:44
"I saw a girl playing with wolves. | 0:21:44 | 0:21:49
"I sang the princess's favourite song | 0:21:49 | 0:21:52
"and she recognised the tune. | 0:21:52 | 0:21:55
"I was lost," she cried. | 0:21:55 | 0:21:58
"But now you have found me." | 0:21:58 | 0:22:00
"She gave me this button, for faithfulness." | 0:22:00 | 0:22:06
Daisy's eyes were already closed. | 0:22:06 | 0:22:09
Floot's musical voice had sung her to sleep. | 0:22:09 | 0:22:14
The following night, Daisy lay awake. | 0:22:14 | 0:22:17
wondering if a story would begin. | 0:22:17 | 0:22:20
Something rustled. | 0:22:20 | 0:22:22
"What was that?" Daisy's heart went pitter-pat. | 0:22:23 | 0:22:26
"What shall we do next?" said a growly voice. | 0:22:26 | 0:22:31
Daisy jumped. There was another rustle. | 0:22:31 | 0:22:35
Where was it coming from? | 0:22:35 | 0:22:38
Daisy was really brave. | 0:22:38 | 0:22:41
She put on her bedside light and slowly, | 0:22:41 | 0:22:44
very slowly, looked under her bed | 0:22:44 | 0:22:48
and saw... | 0:22:48 | 0:22:50
The Beasties! | 0:22:50 | 0:22:54
Daisy opened her mouth to scream, | 0:22:54 | 0:22:56
but she didn't, | 0:22:56 | 0:22:58
because The Beasties | 0:22:58 | 0:23:01
were very, very small. | 0:23:01 | 0:23:05
"Don't be afraid," said one. | 0:23:05 | 0:23:08
"We're storytellers. | 0:23:08 | 0:23:10
"My name is Weevil." | 0:23:10 | 0:23:14
"I'm Floot," piped the next Beastie. | 0:23:14 | 0:23:18
"And I'm Ferdinand," growled the last. | 0:23:18 | 0:23:22
"Don't tell anyone you've seen us." | 0:23:22 | 0:23:27
"I won't," said Daisy. | 0:23:27 | 0:23:29
"But please, can I have another story?" | 0:23:29 | 0:23:32
Floot looked thoughtful. | 0:23:33 | 0:23:36
"I think you can tell your own story," he said, | 0:23:36 | 0:23:41
and he held out a shell. | 0:23:41 | 0:23:44
"All by myself?" | 0:23:45 | 0:23:47
Daisy wasn't sure. | 0:23:47 | 0:23:49
At first, | 0:23:49 | 0:23:50
the shell looked very ordinary, | 0:23:50 | 0:23:53
but then, she put it to her ear | 0:23:53 | 0:23:55
and heard the sea. | 0:23:55 | 0:23:57
Daisy thought hard, then she said, slowly... | 0:23:57 | 0:24:03
"This shell belonged to a mermaid." | 0:24:03 | 0:24:08
"Where was the mermaid?" asked The Beasties. | 0:24:08 | 0:24:11
Daisy thought hard again. | 0:24:11 | 0:24:14
"She was in the sea | 0:24:15 | 0:24:18
"and the shell was in her hair. | 0:24:18 | 0:24:20
"She was crying, because she was caught in a net | 0:24:21 | 0:24:25
"and, so, I jumped onto a rock. I nearly fell, | 0:24:25 | 0:24:30
"but I took her hand and pulled her out." | 0:24:30 | 0:24:34
"The mermaid gave me the shell, | 0:24:34 | 0:24:37
"for saving her." | 0:24:37 | 0:24:39
Daisy smiled to herself and held the shell tight. | 0:24:39 | 0:24:44
She closed her eyes and dreamed she was the mermaid. | 0:24:45 | 0:24:49
"Night, night, Daisy," whispered The Beasties. | 0:24:50 | 0:24:55
"Your bed won't seem so big any more | 0:24:55 | 0:24:59
"and your room won't seem so strange. | 0:24:59 | 0:25:03
"You can tell your own stories now." | 0:25:03 | 0:25:07
And they crept out of her room. | 0:25:08 | 0:25:11
That story was called The Beasties. | 0:25:13 | 0:25:16
I hope you dream of mermaids, princesses, | 0:25:17 | 0:25:20
beautiful birds and wonderful stories by The Beasties tonight, | 0:25:20 | 0:25:25
when you snuggle down to sleep. | 0:25:25 | 0:25:28
And I'll see you soon for another story. | 0:25:28 | 0:25:31
Night, night. | 0:25:32 | 0:25:33
