CBeebies Bedtime Story. | 0:20:03 | 0:20:06
This is too big, this tie! | 0:20:06 | 0:20:09
Oh, hello! I'm Simon. This tie is enormous! | 0:20:09 | 0:20:14
You see, I wanted to be smart to read you tonight's Bedtime Story. | 0:20:14 | 0:20:19
I borrowed the tie from George the Giant, but it's far too big for me. | 0:20:19 | 0:20:25
George is a very kind giant. Let me tell you about him. | 0:20:25 | 0:20:29
The story is by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler | 0:20:29 | 0:20:32
and it's called The Smartest Giant in Town. | 0:20:32 | 0:20:37
George was a giant, the scruffiest giant in town. | 0:20:37 | 0:20:41
He always wore the same pair of old brown sandals | 0:20:41 | 0:20:45
and the same old patched-up gown. | 0:20:45 | 0:20:47
"I wish I wasn't the scruffiest giant in town," he said, sadly. | 0:20:47 | 0:20:53
But one day, George noticed a new shop. | 0:20:53 | 0:20:56
It was full of smart clothes, | 0:20:56 | 0:20:59
so he bought a smart shirt, | 0:20:59 | 0:21:01
a smart pair of trousers, | 0:21:01 | 0:21:03
a smart belt, a smart stripy tie, | 0:21:03 | 0:21:07
some smart socks, with diamonds up the sides | 0:21:07 | 0:21:10
and a pair of smart shiny shoes. | 0:21:10 | 0:21:14
"Now, I'm the smartest giant in town," he said, proudly. | 0:21:14 | 0:21:20
George left his old clothes behind in the shop. | 0:21:20 | 0:21:24
He was about to go home when he heard a sound. | 0:21:24 | 0:21:26
On the pavement stood a giraffe, who was sniffing sadly. | 0:21:26 | 0:21:31
"What's the matter?" asked George. | 0:21:31 | 0:21:34
"It's my neck," said the giraffe. "It's so very long, so very cold. | 0:21:34 | 0:21:40
"I wish I had a long, warm scarf." | 0:21:40 | 0:21:43
"Cheer up," said George. And he took off his stripy tie. | 0:21:43 | 0:21:50
"It didn't match my socks, anyway," | 0:21:50 | 0:21:52
he said, as he wound it round and round the giraffe's neck. | 0:21:52 | 0:21:57
It made a wonderful scarf. "Thank you," said the giraffe. | 0:21:57 | 0:22:02
As George strode towards home, he sang to himself. | 0:22:02 | 0:22:05
# "My tie is a scarf for a cold giraffe, but look me up and down. | 0:22:05 | 0:22:12
# "I'm the smartest giant in town". | 0:22:12 | 0:22:15
George came to a river. | 0:22:15 | 0:22:17
On a boat, stood a goat, who was bleating loudly. | 0:22:17 | 0:22:21
"What's the matter?" asked George. | 0:22:21 | 0:22:24
"It's my sail," said the goat. "It blew away in the storm. | 0:22:24 | 0:22:29
"I wish I had a strong new sail for my boat." | 0:22:29 | 0:22:33
"Cheer up," said George. And he took off his new white shirt. | 0:22:33 | 0:22:39
"It kept coming untucked, anyway," | 0:22:39 | 0:22:41
he said, as he tied it to the mast of the goat's boat. | 0:22:41 | 0:22:45
It made a magnificent sail! | 0:22:45 | 0:22:48
"Thank you," said the goat. | 0:22:48 | 0:22:51
George strode on, singing to himself, | 0:22:51 | 0:22:54
# "My tie is a scarf for a cold giraffe | 0:22:54 | 0:22:57
# "My shirt's on a boat as a sail for a goat | 0:22:57 | 0:22:59
# "But look me up and down, I'm the smartest giant in town." | 0:22:59 | 0:23:05
George came to a tiny, ruined house. | 0:23:05 | 0:23:07
Beside the house stood a white mouse, with lots of baby mice. | 0:23:07 | 0:23:11
They were all squeaking. | 0:23:11 | 0:23:14
"What's the matter?" asked George. | 0:23:14 | 0:23:16
"It's our house!" squeaked the mother mouse. | 0:23:16 | 0:23:20
"It burned down and now we have nowhere to live!" | 0:23:20 | 0:23:25
"I wish we had a nice new house." | 0:23:25 | 0:23:28
"Cheer up," said George, then he took off one of his shiny shoes. | 0:23:28 | 0:23:33
"It was giving me blisters, anyway," he said, | 0:23:33 | 0:23:37
as the mouse and her babies scrambled inside. | 0:23:37 | 0:23:40
The shoe made a perfect home for them. | 0:23:40 | 0:23:44
"Thank you!" "Thank you!" they squeaked. | 0:23:44 | 0:23:47
George had to hop along the road now, but he didn't mind. | 0:23:47 | 0:23:51
As he hopped, he sang to himself, | 0:23:51 | 0:23:54
# "My tie is a scarf for a cold giraffe | 0:23:54 | 0:23:56
# "My shirt's on a boat as a sail for a goat | 0:23:56 | 0:23:59
# "My shoe is a house for a little white mouse | 0:23:59 | 0:24:02
# "But look me up and down, I'm the smartest giant in town." # | 0:24:02 | 0:24:06
George came to a campsite. | 0:24:06 | 0:24:08
Beside a tent stood a fox, who was crying. | 0:24:08 | 0:24:12
"What's the matter?" asked George. | 0:24:12 | 0:24:15
"It's my sleeping bag," said the fox. | 0:24:15 | 0:24:18
"I dropped it in a puddle." | 0:24:18 | 0:24:20
"And I wish I had a warm, dry sleeping bag." | 0:24:20 | 0:24:24
"Cheer up," said George, | 0:24:24 | 0:24:26
and he took off one of his socks with diamonds up the side. | 0:24:26 | 0:24:31
"It was tickling my toes, anyway," he said, as the fox snuggled into it. | 0:24:31 | 0:24:37
It made a very fine sleeping bag. | 0:24:37 | 0:24:40
"Thank you," said the fox. | 0:24:40 | 0:24:42
George came to a big, squelchy bog. | 0:24:42 | 0:24:45
Beside the bog stood a dog, who was howling. | 0:24:45 | 0:24:49
"What's the matter?" asked George. | 0:24:49 | 0:24:52
"It's this bog!" said the dog. | 0:24:52 | 0:24:55
"I need to get across, but I keep getting stuck in the mud." | 0:24:55 | 0:24:59
"I wish there was a safe, dry path." | 0:24:59 | 0:25:02
"Cheer up," said George, and he took off his smart new belt. | 0:25:02 | 0:25:08
"It was squashing my tummy, anyway," | 0:25:08 | 0:25:11
he said, as he laid it down over the bog. | 0:25:11 | 0:25:14
It made an excellent path. | 0:25:14 | 0:25:16
"Thank you!" said the dog. | 0:25:16 | 0:25:18
The wind started to blow, but George didn't mind. | 0:25:18 | 0:25:22
He hopped on, singing to himself, | 0:25:22 | 0:25:25
# "My tie is a scarf for a cold giraffe | 0:25:25 | 0:25:27
# "My shirt's on a boat as a sail for a goat | 0:25:27 | 0:25:29
# "My shoe is a house for a little white mouse | 0:25:29 | 0:25:32
# "One of my socks is a bed for a fox | 0:25:32 | 0:25:34
# "My belt helped a dog who was crossing a bog | 0:25:34 | 0:25:37
# "But... # | 0:25:37 | 0:25:38
"..my trousers are falling down! I'm the coldest giant in town." | 0:25:38 | 0:25:43
Suddenly, George felt sad and shivery, and not at all smart. | 0:25:43 | 0:25:48
He stood on one foot and thought. | 0:25:48 | 0:25:50
"I have to go back to the shop and buy some more clothes," he decided. | 0:25:50 | 0:25:55
He turned round and hopped all the way back to the shop. | 0:25:55 | 0:25:59
But when he got there, it was closed. | 0:25:59 | 0:26:02
"Oh, no!" cried George. | 0:26:02 | 0:26:06
He sank down onto the doorstep and a tear ran down his nose. | 0:26:06 | 0:26:10
He felt as sad as all the animals he had met on his way home. | 0:26:10 | 0:26:15
Then, out of the corner of his eye, | 0:26:15 | 0:26:17
he saw a bag with something familiar poking out of the top. | 0:26:17 | 0:26:21
George took a closer look. | 0:26:21 | 0:26:23
"My gown!" he yelled. "My dear old gown and sandals!" | 0:26:23 | 0:26:30
George put them on. | 0:26:30 | 0:26:31
They felt wonderfully comfortable. | 0:26:31 | 0:26:34
"I'm the cosiest giant in town!" he cried, | 0:26:34 | 0:26:38
and he danced back home along the road. | 0:26:38 | 0:26:41
Outside his front door stood all the animals he had helped. | 0:26:41 | 0:26:45
They were carrying an enormous present. | 0:26:45 | 0:26:49
"Come on, George!" they said. | 0:26:49 | 0:26:52
"Open it!" | 0:26:52 | 0:26:53
George untied the ribbon. | 0:26:53 | 0:26:56
Inside, was a beautiful gold paper crown and a card. | 0:26:56 | 0:27:00
"Look inside the card, George," said the animals. | 0:27:02 | 0:27:05
George put the crown on his head and opened the card. | 0:27:05 | 0:27:10
"Your tie is a scarf for a cold giraffe, | 0:27:10 | 0:27:14
"your shirt's on a boat as a sail for a goat, | 0:27:14 | 0:27:17
"your shoe is a house for a little white mouse, | 0:27:17 | 0:27:20
"one of your socks is a bed for a fox, | 0:27:20 | 0:27:22
"your belt helped a dog who was crossing a bog, | 0:27:22 | 0:27:26
"so here is a very fine crown, to go with the sandals and gown | 0:27:26 | 0:27:30
of the kindest giant in town." | 0:27:30 | 0:27:35
That story was called The Smartest Giant in Town. | 0:27:35 | 0:27:39
Wasn't George a very generous and kind giant? | 0:27:39 | 0:27:43
Can you think of anybody you can help tomorrow, just like George? | 0:27:43 | 0:27:48
Well, while you're thinking, | 0:27:48 | 0:27:50
it's time to close your eyes and go to bed. | 0:27:50 | 0:27:52
I'll see you soon for another Bedtime Story. | 0:27:52 | 0:27:55
Goodnight. | 0:27:55 | 0:27:57
Now then, I really should take this tie back to George, | 0:27:57 | 0:28:01
he probably needs it. | 0:28:01 | 0:28:03
