Hello, there. I'm Dan. | 0:23:08 | 0:23:10
I'm trying to learn some new tricks on my yo-yo, | 0:23:10 | 0:23:14
but as you can see it's proving harder than I thought. | 0:23:14 | 0:23:17
If I keep going, and practise really hard, | 0:23:17 | 0:23:20
I might be able to do some fancy moves. | 0:23:20 | 0:23:22
It could take me a while, though. | 0:23:22 | 0:23:24
Tonight's bedtime story is about a dragon who also tries really hard. | 0:23:24 | 0:23:28
It's called Zog. There it is. | 0:23:28 | 0:23:30
It's by Julia Donaldson, and illustrations are by Axel Scheffler. | 0:23:30 | 0:23:35
Madam dragon ran a school, many moons ago. | 0:23:35 | 0:23:39
She taught young dragons all the things that dragons need to know. | 0:23:39 | 0:23:43
Zog, the biggest dragon, was the keenest one by far. | 0:23:43 | 0:23:48
He tried his hardest every day to win a golden star. | 0:23:48 | 0:23:52
All the dragons in year one were learning how to fly. | 0:23:52 | 0:23:57
"High!" said Madame Dragon, "Way up in the sky! | 0:23:57 | 0:24:01
"Now you've been shown, you can practise on your own. | 0:24:01 | 0:24:04
"You'll all be expert flyers by the time you're fully grown." | 0:24:04 | 0:24:07
Zog went off to practise, flying fast and free. | 0:24:07 | 0:24:11
He soared and swooped and looped the loop, and crashed into a tree. | 0:24:11 | 0:24:16
Just then a little girl came by. "Oh, please don't cry!" she said. | 0:24:16 | 0:24:21
"Perhaps you'd like a nice sticky plaster for your head." | 0:24:21 | 0:24:25
"What a good idea!" said Zog, then up and off he flew. | 0:24:25 | 0:24:29
His plaster gleaming pinkly as he zig-zagged through the blue. | 0:24:29 | 0:24:34
A year went by, and in year two the dragons learned to roar. | 0:24:34 | 0:24:37
"More!" said Madame Dragon, "Louder, I implore! | 0:24:37 | 0:24:41
"Now that you've been shown, you can practise on your own, | 0:24:41 | 0:24:44
"and you'll all be champion roarers by the time you're fully grown." | 0:24:44 | 0:24:49
Zog went off to practise, he roared with fearsome force. | 0:24:49 | 0:24:53
He kept it up for hours on end, but then his throat grew hoarse. | 0:24:53 | 0:24:57
Just then the girl came by again, she said, "What rotten luck! | 0:24:57 | 0:25:01
"Perhaps you'd like a nice, soothing peppermint to suck?" | 0:25:01 | 0:25:05
"What a good idea!" said Zog, then up and off he flew. | 0:25:05 | 0:25:09
And breathing fumes of peppermint, he zig-zagged through the blue. | 0:25:09 | 0:25:14
A year went by, and in year three the dragons learned to blow. | 0:25:14 | 0:25:18
"No!" said Madame Dragon, "Breathe out fire, not snow! | 0:25:18 | 0:25:22
"Now that you've been shown, you can practise on your own. | 0:25:22 | 0:25:25
"And you'll all be breathing bonfires | 0:25:25 | 0:25:27
"by the time you're fully grown." | 0:25:27 | 0:25:30
Zog went off to practise. | 0:25:30 | 0:25:31
He blew with all his might, he twirled around in triumph, | 0:25:31 | 0:25:35
and his wingtip caught alight. | 0:25:35 | 0:25:37
Just then, the girl came by again. She said, "You poor old thing! | 0:25:37 | 0:25:42
"Perhaps you'd like a nice stretchy bandage for your wing?" | 0:25:42 | 0:25:45
"What a good idea!" said Zog, then up and off he flew, | 0:25:45 | 0:25:49
his bandage flapping wildly as he zig-zagged through the blue. | 0:25:49 | 0:25:54
The year four dragons were learning - can you guess? | 0:25:54 | 0:25:57
"Yes!" said Madame Dragon, "How to capture a princess. | 0:25:57 | 0:26:00
"Now you've been shown, you can practise on your own. | 0:26:00 | 0:26:04
"You'll need to catch a hundred by the time you're fully grown." | 0:26:04 | 0:26:08
Zog went off to practise, he tried and tried and tried, | 0:26:08 | 0:26:11
but he simply couldn't manage. | 0:26:11 | 0:26:13
"I'm no good at this!" he cried. | 0:26:13 | 0:26:15
"I'll never win a golden star." Just then, he saw the girl. | 0:26:15 | 0:26:18
"Perhaps," she said, "you'd like to capture me. I'm Princess Pearl." | 0:26:18 | 0:26:23
"What a good idea!" said Zog, then up and off he flew, | 0:26:23 | 0:26:27
the princess gripping tightly as they zig-zagged through the blue. | 0:26:27 | 0:26:32
"Ah!" said Madame Dragon. "Our first princess so far. | 0:26:32 | 0:26:35
"Congratulations, Zog, my dear. You've won a golden star." | 0:26:35 | 0:26:40
Zog was proud and happy, and Pearl felt good, as well. | 0:26:40 | 0:26:44
She took the dragons' temperatures, and nursed them when they fell. | 0:26:44 | 0:26:48
A year went by, and in year five, the dragons learned to fight. | 0:26:48 | 0:26:53
"Right!" said Madame Dragon, "Here comes a real, live knight!" | 0:26:53 | 0:26:57
Up spoke the knight. "My name," he said, "is Gadabout The Great. | 0:26:57 | 0:27:02
"I've come to rescue Princess Pearl. I hope I'm not too late." | 0:27:02 | 0:27:06
Zog breathed fire and beat his wings. | 0:27:06 | 0:27:08
"You can't, she's mine!" he roared. | 0:27:08 | 0:27:11
"Oh, no she's not!" yelled Gadabout, and waved his trusty sword. | 0:27:11 | 0:27:15
The other dragons gathered round, and watched them, all agog. | 0:27:15 | 0:27:20
Who was going to win the fight? Sir Gadabout or Zog? | 0:27:20 | 0:27:24
Then Princess Pearl stepped forward, crying, "Stop, you silly chumps! | 0:27:24 | 0:27:29
"The world's already far too full of cuts and burns and bumps. | 0:27:29 | 0:27:34
"Don't rescue me, I won't go back to being a princess. | 0:27:34 | 0:27:38
"And prancing round the palace in a silly, frilly dress. | 0:27:38 | 0:27:41
"I want to be a doctor, and travel here and there, | 0:27:41 | 0:27:44
"listening to people's chests, and giving them my care." | 0:27:44 | 0:27:48
"Me too!" Exclaimed the knight, and he took his helmet off his head. | 0:27:48 | 0:27:52
"I'd rather wear a nice, twisty stethoscope," he said. | 0:27:52 | 0:27:55
"Perhaps, Princess, you'll train me up?" | 0:27:55 | 0:27:57
And Pearl replied, "Of course, but I don't see how the two of us | 0:27:57 | 0:28:01
"could fit upon your horse." | 0:28:01 | 0:28:04
Then Zog said, "Flying doctors! I'd love to join the crew! | 0:28:04 | 0:28:08
"If you'll let me be your ambulance, then I can carry you." | 0:28:08 | 0:28:11
"Bravo!" Said Madame Dragon. "An excellent career!" | 0:28:11 | 0:28:15
And all the year five dragons gave a loud, resounding cheer. | 0:28:15 | 0:28:19
Then Madame Dragon told the horse, "I really hope you'll stay. | 0:28:19 | 0:28:23
"I'll let you be my pupils' pet, and feed you lots of hay." | 0:28:23 | 0:28:27
"What a good idea!" said Zog, then up and off he flew, | 0:28:27 | 0:28:32
the flying doctors waving as they zig-zagged through the blue. | 0:28:32 | 0:28:35
That story was called Zog, and Zog was very determined, wasn't he? | 0:28:37 | 0:28:41
He kept practising hard, | 0:28:41 | 0:28:43
and in the end, his teacher was very pleased with him. | 0:28:43 | 0:28:46
I'm going to keep practising my yo-yo skills. | 0:28:46 | 0:28:49
But for you, it's probably time you had a sleep, | 0:28:49 | 0:28:52
and a dream about what you'll practise tomorrow. | 0:28:52 | 0:28:55
See you next time. | 0:28:55 | 0:28:56 |
