CBeebies Bedtime Story. | 0:31:02 | 0:31:05
Really, Buttons? Right. | 0:31:06 | 0:31:08
Oh. Hello. My name's Dan. | 0:31:08 | 0:31:11
Thanks for joining me for the CBeebies Bedtime Hour. | 0:31:11 | 0:31:14
The toys were telling me about their adventures. | 0:31:14 | 0:31:17
It's very important to listen to our friends and family, isn't it? | 0:31:17 | 0:31:21
Have you ever been with someone who doesn't seem to hear | 0:31:21 | 0:31:24
a word you are saying? | 0:31:24 | 0:31:25
I know someone who feels just like that. | 0:31:25 | 0:31:28
His name is Jack and I'm going to tell you about him | 0:31:28 | 0:31:31
in tonight's Bedtime Story. | 0:31:31 | 0:31:33
It's a book by Jessica Meserve and it's called Can Anybody Hear Me? | 0:31:33 | 0:31:38
This is Jack. He is very quiet. This is Jack's family. | 0:31:38 | 0:31:44
They are very noisy. | 0:31:44 | 0:31:46
In fact, they're so noisy that no-one seems to hear Jack. | 0:31:46 | 0:31:51
Jack said to Ma, "I'm going to the mountain today." | 0:31:51 | 0:31:55
Ma said, "One or two pancakes?" Jack said, "One, please." | 0:31:55 | 0:32:00
Ma gave him two. | 0:32:00 | 0:32:01
Jack said to Granny and Gramps, | 0:32:01 | 0:32:03
"I'm going to walk to the top of the mountain today." | 0:32:03 | 0:32:06
Granny said, "I'm going to knit you a nice, new sweater. | 0:32:06 | 0:32:10
"What colour, red or blue?" | 0:32:10 | 0:32:12
Jack said, "Blue, please." Granny said, "Red is a very good choice." | 0:32:12 | 0:32:18
Gramps said, "I'm going to write a song about red." | 0:32:18 | 0:32:21
Jack said to Pa, "I'm going to the top of the mountain today." | 0:32:21 | 0:32:26
Pa said, "Are you going fishing in the creek?" | 0:32:26 | 0:32:30
Jack said, "No, I'm going to the mountain." | 0:32:30 | 0:32:34
Pa said, "Catch some big ones." | 0:32:34 | 0:32:36
Jack said to June-bug and Jim-bob, | 0:32:36 | 0:32:39
"Do you want to come to the top of the mountain?" | 0:32:39 | 0:32:42
June-bug said to Jim-bob, "Jack wants to play hide and seek." | 0:32:42 | 0:32:46
Jack said, "No, I want to go to the mountain." | 0:32:46 | 0:32:50
Jim-bob said, "Count to 50, Jack, we'll hide." | 0:32:50 | 0:32:53
"I wonder if anybody heard me say I'm going to the mountain," | 0:32:53 | 0:32:57
thought Jack. "I hope someone did." | 0:32:57 | 0:33:00
He set off on his own with just his best friend Chester for company. | 0:33:00 | 0:33:05
Past the barn. | 0:33:05 | 0:33:06
Across the pastures and over the whooshing, burbling waterfall. | 0:33:06 | 0:33:11
Up, up, up the mountain side. Until he reached the top of the mountain. | 0:33:11 | 0:33:16
The mountain top was still and quiet. | 0:33:16 | 0:33:20
Jack took a deep breath, filled his lungs | 0:33:20 | 0:33:23
and shouted with all his might, "Can anybody hear me?" | 0:33:23 | 0:33:29
Jack barely heard his voice fill the silence for a second, | 0:33:29 | 0:33:33
before it disappeared into the vast sky around him. | 0:33:33 | 0:33:37
Jack sighed, "I wish someone could hear me." | 0:33:37 | 0:33:41
Jack cuddled Chester and whispered, "You can hear me, can't you?" | 0:33:41 | 0:33:46
"Yes," said Chester, looking straight at him. | 0:33:46 | 0:33:49
"I have always heard you." | 0:33:51 | 0:33:53
Jack blinked with surprise, then smiled and said, | 0:33:53 | 0:33:56
"Do you want to play?" | 0:33:56 | 0:33:58
Chester smiled back and said, "Yes." | 0:33:58 | 0:34:01
Together, they slid down the snowy peak of the mountain | 0:34:01 | 0:34:05
and fell giggling into a heap of snow. | 0:34:05 | 0:34:07
At the bottom of the slope, they found a wolf cub all alone. | 0:34:07 | 0:34:11
"Do you think he's lost?" asked Jack. "Yes", said Chester. | 0:34:11 | 0:34:15
"We should call for his mother. | 0:34:15 | 0:34:17
"Maybe if we howl together, she'll hear us." | 0:34:17 | 0:34:20
Jack was doubtful. | 0:34:20 | 0:34:22
"No-one ever seems to hear me." "I can", said Chester. | 0:34:22 | 0:34:26
"Give it a go." | 0:34:26 | 0:34:27
So, together, they howled like wolves. | 0:34:27 | 0:34:30
"Ow, ow, ow, ooooow." | 0:34:30 | 0:34:33
Soon, over the hill, a much larger wolf bounded towards them. | 0:34:33 | 0:34:38
"There", said Chester, "I knew you could do it." | 0:34:38 | 0:34:41
Together, they walked down the mountain side towards home. | 0:34:41 | 0:34:45
Suddenly, a bear appeared on the path, towering above them. | 0:34:45 | 0:34:50
Jack and Chester froze. | 0:34:50 | 0:34:52
Chester's voice quivered, "If you look big and growl back, | 0:34:52 | 0:34:56
"you can scare him away," he said. | 0:34:56 | 0:34:58
Jack's legs were shaking, but he took a deep breath, | 0:34:58 | 0:35:02
filled his lungs and growled his biggest growl. | 0:35:02 | 0:35:05
"Grrrrr." | 0:35:05 | 0:35:08
The bear fled into the woods, Chester smiled, | 0:35:08 | 0:35:11
"You were very fierce and loud." Jack smiled back, "Thank you." | 0:35:11 | 0:35:17
Night fell. | 0:35:17 | 0:35:20
"Chester," Jack said, "I think we're lost." | 0:35:20 | 0:35:23
"If you can call a mother wolf and the scare away a bear, | 0:35:24 | 0:35:28
"you can yell for help," said Chester. | 0:35:28 | 0:35:31
Jack picked up Chester, he took a deep breath, filled his lungs | 0:35:31 | 0:35:34
and shouted out, "Can anybody hear me?" | 0:35:34 | 0:35:38
Only an owl hooted in response. | 0:35:38 | 0:35:41
"I think I'm still not noisy enough for my family to hear me," | 0:35:41 | 0:35:45
said Jack. | 0:35:45 | 0:35:46
But then, Jack saw lanterns, bobbing in the distance. | 0:35:46 | 0:35:49
He heard the voices of Ma and Pa. | 0:35:49 | 0:35:52
"Jack, where are you?" "Jack, can you hear us?" | 0:35:52 | 0:35:55
Jack called with all his might, "I'm over here, I'm over here." | 0:35:55 | 0:36:01
The voices of his family drew closer. | 0:36:01 | 0:36:03
And Jack smiled, "They can hear me, Chester, just like you." | 0:36:03 | 0:36:08
Pa cried, "We were so worried, no-one knew where you were." | 0:36:08 | 0:36:12
"Chester knew where I was," Jack said. "Chester?" Pa laughed. | 0:36:12 | 0:36:17
"Come on, it's time for supper," said Ma. | 0:36:17 | 0:36:20
Chester winked at Jack. | 0:36:20 | 0:36:23
Back at the ranch, Jack's family all talked at once, | 0:36:23 | 0:36:26
asking where he had been. | 0:36:26 | 0:36:27
Jack took a deep breath, filling his lungs | 0:36:27 | 0:36:30
and, with his biggest voice, he shouted, "Quiet please!" | 0:36:30 | 0:36:34
His family became as quiet as mice. Then Jack began his story. | 0:36:34 | 0:36:41
And this time, they all heard every word. | 0:36:41 | 0:36:44
And that story was called Can Anybody Hear Me? | 0:36:45 | 0:36:49
I'm so pleased that Jack's family finally heard him. | 0:36:49 | 0:36:52
I think I'll sit and listen to the toys for a little longer. | 0:36:52 | 0:36:56
And while I do that, I think it's time you go to sleep. | 0:36:56 | 0:37:00
Good night and I'll see you soon. | 0:37:00 | 0:37:02
