CBeebies Bedtime Story. | 0:00:02 | 0:00:06
Hello. I'm Sally. | 0:00:06 | 0:00:08
I hope you're snuggled up and ready for tonight's bedtime story. | 0:00:08 | 0:00:12
It's called Bringing Down The Moon | 0:00:12 | 0:00:15
and it's by Jonathan Emmett and Vanessa Cabban. | 0:00:15 | 0:00:18
"Hot diggerty!" exclaimed Mole, | 0:00:18 | 0:00:21
as he burrowed out of the ground one night. | 0:00:21 | 0:00:24
"Whatever's that?" | 0:00:24 | 0:00:26
The moon was hanging in the sky above him like a bright silver coin. | 0:00:26 | 0:00:31
Mole thought it was the most beautiful thing | 0:00:31 | 0:00:34
that he had ever seen. | 0:00:34 | 0:00:36
"Whatever it is, I must have it," Mole said to himself. | 0:00:36 | 0:00:40
"I know, I'll jump up and pull it down." | 0:00:40 | 0:00:45
Thump! Thump! Thumpety-bump! | 0:00:45 | 0:00:47
Mole was so busy jumping, he didn't think about the noise he was making | 0:00:47 | 0:00:51
and he woke up Rabbit. | 0:00:51 | 0:00:53
"Mole!" said Rabbit. "What on earth do you think you're doing?" | 0:00:53 | 0:00:57
"Hello, Rabbit," said Mole, | 0:00:57 | 0:00:59
"I'm trying to pull down that shiny thing." | 0:00:59 | 0:01:02
"You mean the moon?" asked Rabbit. | 0:01:02 | 0:01:05
"Ah, so that's what it's called," said Mole. | 0:01:05 | 0:01:08
"You'll never do that," said Rabbit. "It's not as near as it looks." | 0:01:08 | 0:01:13
But Mole would not give up. | 0:01:13 | 0:01:16
"I know," he thought, "I'll get a stick and poke it down." | 0:01:16 | 0:01:20
He found a long stick and he poked it up at the moon. | 0:01:20 | 0:01:24
Swish! Swish! Swishety-swish! | 0:01:24 | 0:01:27
Mole was so busy poking | 0:01:27 | 0:01:29
that he tripped over Hedgehog in his bed of leaves. | 0:01:29 | 0:01:33
"Mole!" grunted Hedgehog. "What the weevil are you up to?" | 0:01:33 | 0:01:38
"Hello, Hedgehog," said Mole. "I'm trying to poke down the moon." | 0:01:38 | 0:01:42
"Oh, you'll never do that," said Hedgehog. | 0:01:42 | 0:01:45
"It's not as near as it looks." | 0:01:45 | 0:01:47
But Mole would not give up. | 0:01:47 | 0:01:50
"I know," he thought, "I'll throw something at it and knock it down." | 0:01:50 | 0:01:54
He found some acorns and threw them at the moon. | 0:01:54 | 0:01:57
Plink-plink! Plinkety-plink! | 0:01:57 | 0:02:00
"Ouch!" said Squirrel. "Mole, have you gone nuts?" | 0:02:00 | 0:02:04
"Hello, Squirrel," said Mole. | 0:02:04 | 0:02:06
"I'm trying to knock down the moon." | 0:02:06 | 0:02:08
"You'll never do that," said Squirrel. | 0:02:08 | 0:02:11
"It's not as near as it looks." | 0:02:11 | 0:02:13
But Mole wanted the moon so badly | 0:02:15 | 0:02:18
he would not give up. | 0:02:18 | 0:02:20
"I know," he thought, "I'll climb a tree and I will fetch it down." | 0:02:20 | 0:02:25
Mole had never climbed a tree before. | 0:02:25 | 0:02:28
It was hard work and he was scared to be so far from the ground. | 0:02:28 | 0:02:32
But he kept on going until he saw the moon | 0:02:32 | 0:02:35
resting in the leaves above him. | 0:02:35 | 0:02:38
Mole stretched out his paws, | 0:02:38 | 0:02:41
but just when he thought he had the moon, he slipped. | 0:02:41 | 0:02:44
"Oh! Eek! Ouch! Ooo!" | 0:02:44 | 0:02:47
Mole tumbled down | 0:02:47 | 0:02:48
and landed - splash! - in the middle of a puddle. | 0:02:48 | 0:02:52
"Hot dang diggerty drat," thought Mole. | 0:02:52 | 0:02:54
"I almost had it that time." | 0:02:54 | 0:02:56
Then he noticed something floating in the puddle beside him. | 0:02:56 | 0:03:01
It was pale... | 0:03:01 | 0:03:03
and wrinkled... | 0:03:03 | 0:03:05
but Mole recognised it at once. | 0:03:05 | 0:03:08
"Ah! The moon!" whispered Mole. | 0:03:08 | 0:03:12
"It must have fallen down with me." | 0:03:12 | 0:03:15
He reached out to pick up the moon, | 0:03:15 | 0:03:18
but as soon as he touched it, it broke into pieces and vanished. | 0:03:18 | 0:03:22
Mole sat in the puddle and cried. | 0:03:23 | 0:03:27
Rabbit, Hedgehog and Squirrel came running up. | 0:03:27 | 0:03:31
"Are you all right, Mole?" asked Rabbit. | 0:03:31 | 0:03:35
"I'm all right," sobbed Mole, "but the moon isn't." | 0:03:35 | 0:03:40
"I pulled it down and then I broke it! | 0:03:40 | 0:03:43
"And it was so beautiful! | 0:03:43 | 0:03:46
"And now I shall never see it again." | 0:03:46 | 0:03:49
"Oh, Mole," said Rabbit. | 0:03:49 | 0:03:52
"You couldn't have pulled down the moon." | 0:03:52 | 0:03:55
"And you couldn't have broken it," said Hedgehog. | 0:03:55 | 0:03:58
"And you'll certainly see it again," said Squirrel. | 0:03:58 | 0:04:01
"Look!" | 0:04:01 | 0:04:04
High up in the sky above them, | 0:04:04 | 0:04:06
the moon was coming out from behind a cloud. | 0:04:06 | 0:04:09
"Oh!" whispered Mole. | 0:04:10 | 0:04:14
"And it's just as beautiful as ever." | 0:04:16 | 0:04:19
Mole, Rabbit, Hedgehog and Squirrel | 0:04:19 | 0:04:22
stood and stared up at the moon together. | 0:04:22 | 0:04:25
"It is beautiful," said Rabbit. | 0:04:26 | 0:04:29
"Very beautiful," said Hedgehog. | 0:04:29 | 0:04:32
"Very beautiful indeed," said Squirrel. | 0:04:32 | 0:04:37
"Yes," said Mole, "but it's not as near as it looks." | 0:04:38 | 0:04:43
That story was called Bringing Down The Moon. | 0:04:45 | 0:04:49
As the big beautiful moon is shining down on us, | 0:04:49 | 0:04:53
it's time for you to go to sleep. | 0:04:53 | 0:04:55
So close your eyes and I'll see you soon for another bedtime story. | 0:04:55 | 0:05:00
