Tonight's story is about a hippo who thinks he's one of a kind
and his best friend, a bird, who wants to be just like him.
The story is called I Am Not A Copycat,
and it is by Ann Bonwill and Simon Rickerty.
HUGO: I am Hugo the hippo. I'm one of a kind. I am unique.
BELLA: What are we doing?
HUGO: I was being unique until you came along, Bella.
BELLA: Oh. Sorry. That's quite a hat, by the way.
HUGO: Thank you! But as I was saying before I was so rudely interrupted,
I'm practising moves for my water ballet.
I don't know another hippo who can stand on his head...
BELLA: Neither do I! Love the costume.
HUGO: ..touch his toes...
BELLA: Nope. Can't think of anyone. Great goggles.
HUGO: ..or even do the splits.
BELLA: It's true. There's no-one like you,
you are unique, right down to your flippers.
HUGO: I would be, except that you keep copying me!
BELLA: Wow! Nice armbands! Where are we going?
HUGO: Not telling. And you are NOT going.
HUGO: Bella! Do you have to copy everything I do?
BELLA: Erm, yes. It's lots of fun,
and besides, I want to be unique, too, just like you!
HUGO: Argh! Time for my show. See how I can float?
BELLA: So can I!
HUGO: And dive.
BELLA: Me too!
HUGO: But only I can do a triple back flip.
BELLA: Right. Only you.
HUGO: Bella, will you stop being a copycat?
BELLA: I'm not a copycat! I'm a bird.
HUGO: Well, you're a bird who's ruining my water ballet.
"Bravo," says another hippo. "May I take your photo?
"You two are amazing synchronised swimmers."
"I agree!" says another bird. "Your team is truly unique."
BELLA: Really? See, Hugo? I wasn't ruining your ballet.
I was making it better.
HUGO: Yes... I suppose you were.
HUGO: I think we're famous!
BELLA: How about some ice cream to celebrate?
I'll have strawberry swirl with vanilla wafers and minty sprinkles.
HUGO: And I'll have...
exactly the same!
You're right, Bella, it is lots of fun to be alike.
BELLA: I guess so, sometimes.
But maybe this time I'll change mine to...
double chocolate chip...
just to be unique.
And that story was called I Am Not A Copycat.
I think Bella WAS being a copycat, really. Don't you?
But it all turned out brilliantly in the end.
And they had ice cream. Lucky them!
Now it's bedtime for hippos and birds,
and it's bedtime for you, as well.
So get yourself comfy and cosy and ready for a good night's sleep.
I'll see you again soon for another bedtime story. Night-night!
