Hello, there. I'm Rosamund. | 0:00:07 | 0:00:09
Have you ever heard a noise that sounds quite scary at first | 0:00:09 | 0:00:12
and then turns out to be something quite exciting? | 0:00:12 | 0:00:16
Would you like to hear a story about a noise like that? | 0:00:16 | 0:00:19
You would? That's great. | 0:00:19 | 0:00:21
Well, this story is called The Big Splash | 0:00:21 | 0:00:24
and it's by AH Benjamin and Jon Lycett-Smith. | 0:00:24 | 0:00:28
All was quiet in the woods. | 0:00:29 | 0:00:31
Hare was enjoying a nibble, not far from his house, | 0:00:32 | 0:00:36
when... Da-domp, da-domp, da-domp! | 0:00:36 | 0:00:41
-The ground shook and shuddered. -RUMBLE | 0:00:41 | 0:00:44
Trees trembled, rocks rattled. | 0:00:44 | 0:00:47
It was a terrible noise! | 0:00:47 | 0:00:49
"It's Shaggybody!" gasped Hare, his long ears quivering nervously. | 0:00:49 | 0:00:55
He didn't even bother to hide and he sprinted off. | 0:00:55 | 0:00:59
Meanwhile, down by the river, | 0:00:59 | 0:01:02
Beaver was admiring the new dam he'd just built, when... | 0:01:02 | 0:01:06
Da-domp, da-domp, da-domp! | 0:01:06 | 0:01:10
-The ground shook and shuddered. -RUMBLE | 0:01:10 | 0:01:13
Trees trembled, rocks rattled. | 0:01:13 | 0:01:17
It was a terrible noise! | 0:01:17 | 0:01:20
"It's B-B-B-Boulderhead!" stammered Beaver, | 0:01:20 | 0:01:23
teeth chattering ten to the dozen. | 0:01:23 | 0:01:25
He was off in a flash, his flat tail bobbing up and down. | 0:01:25 | 0:01:30
A little further away, Skunk was frolicking in a flower field | 0:01:30 | 0:01:34
to freshen herself up, when... | 0:01:34 | 0:01:36
Da-domp, da-domp, da-domp! | 0:01:36 | 0:01:40
-The ground shook and shuddered. -RUMBLE | 0:01:40 | 0:01:43
Trees trembled, rocks rattled. | 0:01:43 | 0:01:46
It was a terrible noise! | 0:01:46 | 0:01:48
"It's R-R-R-Redhorns!" spluttered Skunk, shaking like a leaf. | 0:01:48 | 0:01:53
Scattering flowers left and right, | 0:01:53 | 0:01:56
she scampered off as fast as she could. | 0:01:56 | 0:01:59
Deeper in the woods, Raccoon was practising | 0:01:59 | 0:02:02
hanging upside down from his favourite tree, when... | 0:02:02 | 0:02:06
Da-domp, da-domp, da-domp! | 0:02:06 | 0:02:08
-The ground shook and shuddered. -RUMBLE | 0:02:08 | 0:02:11
Trees trembled, rocks rattled. | 0:02:11 | 0:02:14
It was a terrible noise! | 0:02:14 | 0:02:16
"It's Fire-Nostrils!" wailed Raccoon, | 0:02:16 | 0:02:21
falling from the tree with surprise - bomp - | 0:02:21 | 0:02:24
but he quickly scrambled back to his feet and ran like mad. | 0:02:24 | 0:02:29
Not too far away, | 0:02:29 | 0:02:31
Fox was busy storing food in his secret hideout, when... | 0:02:31 | 0:02:36
Da-domp, da-domp, da-domp! | 0:02:36 | 0:02:40
The ground shook and shuddered. | 0:02:40 | 0:02:42
-Trees trembled, rocks rattled. -RUMBLE | 0:02:42 | 0:02:45
It was a terrible noise! | 0:02:45 | 0:02:47
"It's Thunderhooves!" cried Fox, frozen to the spot. | 0:02:47 | 0:02:53
But not for long. Forgetting his precious food, | 0:02:53 | 0:02:56
he bolted off. | 0:02:56 | 0:02:58
Soon, Hare, Beaver, Skunk, Raccoon and Fox | 0:02:58 | 0:03:02
were running together. | 0:03:02 | 0:03:04
Suddenly, they came to a dead end. | 0:03:04 | 0:03:07
"What do we do now?" they shouted, panicking. | 0:03:08 | 0:03:12
It was too late to turn back. | 0:03:12 | 0:03:14
Meanwhile, the noise grew louder and more terrible. | 0:03:14 | 0:03:20
Da-domp, da-domp, da-domp! | 0:03:20 | 0:03:24
Then, from around the bend, appeared a huge, shaggy creature. | 0:03:24 | 0:03:31
His head was the size of a boulder. | 0:03:31 | 0:03:34
His horns were dreadfully long and sharp. | 0:03:34 | 0:03:38
Steam spurted out of his nostrils like fire | 0:03:38 | 0:03:42
and he pawed the ground with thunder-like hooves. | 0:03:42 | 0:03:46
"Hello, everyone!" boomed Buffalo, cheerfully. | 0:03:46 | 0:03:52
I thought I'd never catch up with you. | 0:03:52 | 0:03:55
They all stayed quiet. | 0:03:55 | 0:03:57
"Come on, let's do it!" grinned Buffalo. | 0:03:57 | 0:04:02
"W-W-W-We don't want to." they all stammered. | 0:04:02 | 0:04:08
"We saw you do it. It...it...it's scary!" | 0:04:08 | 0:04:12
"It's all right," Buffalo reassured them. "It's fun, you'll enjoy it." | 0:04:12 | 0:04:20
They all looked at each other, thinking long and hard. | 0:04:20 | 0:04:24
At last, they plucked up enough courage. | 0:04:25 | 0:04:29
"Oh, all right, then," they finally agreed. | 0:04:29 | 0:04:34
One by one, they climbed onto Buffalo's back | 0:04:34 | 0:04:38
and then, they were off, at a tremendous gallop - | 0:04:38 | 0:04:42
da-domp, da-domp, da-domp! | 0:04:42 | 0:04:45
Past Fox's secret hideout they zoomed. | 0:04:45 | 0:04:47
Under Raccoon's favourite tree they whooshed. | 0:04:47 | 0:04:51
Through Skunk's flower field they ploughed. | 0:04:51 | 0:04:54
Across Beaver's new dam they thundered. | 0:04:54 | 0:04:57
Over Hare's house they bounded, | 0:04:57 | 0:04:59
and still they kept going. | 0:04:59 | 0:05:01
"We're nearly there!" said Buffalo, at last. | 0:05:01 | 0:05:05
"Hold on tight, everyone." | 0:05:05 | 0:05:08
One moment, they were running on the ground | 0:05:08 | 0:05:11
and the next, they were sailing through the air. | 0:05:11 | 0:05:15
Then there was a big... | 0:05:16 | 0:05:19
splash! | 0:05:19 | 0:05:21
Shrieks of delight followed | 0:05:23 | 0:05:25
as they splashed happily in the warm water of the lake. | 0:05:25 | 0:05:29
"It was scary at first," they shouted excitedly, | 0:05:29 | 0:05:34
"but fun afterwards!" | 0:05:34 | 0:05:36
"I told you so," laughed Buffalo. | 0:05:36 | 0:05:40
"Shall we do that again?" | 0:05:40 | 0:05:42
"Yes, please!" they all cried. | 0:05:42 | 0:05:46
I hope you enjoyed that story, which was called The Big Splash. | 0:05:48 | 0:05:53
All the animals had lots of fun in the end, didn't they? | 0:05:53 | 0:05:56
Now, it's time for you to pull up your duvet | 0:05:56 | 0:06:00
and drift off to a woodland full of some of those animals, maybe - | 0:06:00 | 0:06:04
but definitely full of starlight and dreams. | 0:06:04 | 0:06:08
Night-night. Sleep well. | 0:06:08 | 0:06:11 |
