Hello. My name's Ben. I wonder if you can help me. | 0:51:07 | 0:51:10
I'm trying to decide which hat I should wear. | 0:51:10 | 0:51:12
This one is quite nice, sparkly. | 0:51:12 | 0:51:14
But there's this red one. | 0:51:14 | 0:51:16
There's lots to choose from. | 0:51:16 | 0:51:18
Tonight's story is all about a little pig who loves wearing hats. | 0:51:18 | 0:51:22
Would you like to hear it? Great! | 0:51:22 | 0:51:25
It's called Hamilton's Hats by Martine Oborne and Axel Scheffler. | 0:51:25 | 0:51:30
Hamilton the Pig was very fond of hats. | 0:51:31 | 0:51:35
He had big hats, small hats, | 0:51:35 | 0:51:38
tall hats, floppy hats, | 0:51:38 | 0:51:40
stripy hats, feathery hats and | 0:51:40 | 0:51:42
-suitable-for-every-and-any-occasion sort of hats. -BOING! | 0:51:42 | 0:51:46
In fact, he had so many hats | 0:51:46 | 0:51:48
that you would need more than all your fingers and toes to count them. | 0:51:48 | 0:51:53
When Hamilton the Pig's mum | 0:51:53 | 0:51:55
saw Hamilton messing about in his hats, she worried. | 0:51:55 | 0:51:58
"Hamilton," she would say, "You are a very vain little pig | 0:51:58 | 0:52:02
"and I do not know what is to become of you. | 0:52:02 | 0:52:05
"You have many lessons to learn in life | 0:52:05 | 0:52:07
"and will learn none of them from hats." | 0:52:07 | 0:52:10
But Hamilton did not listen. | 0:52:10 | 0:52:12
He was too busy tipping and cocking, raising and straightening | 0:52:12 | 0:52:16
and doing all the other things you do with hats. | 0:52:16 | 0:52:19
One day, Hamilton the Pig was out and about | 0:52:19 | 0:52:22
when he bumped into a giraffe. | 0:52:22 | 0:52:25
Hamilton was wearing a tall, | 0:52:25 | 0:52:27
teetering, high-as-a-chimney sort of hat. | 0:52:27 | 0:52:30
"My hat makes me almost as tall as you," he said to the giraffe. | 0:52:30 | 0:52:35
The giraffe snorted, and with one fell swoop snatched up | 0:52:35 | 0:52:39
the hat and flipped it onto her head. | 0:52:39 | 0:52:42
"Hmm, indeed. A very fine hat," she said, | 0:52:42 | 0:52:45
ignoring the hot cross piglet below. | 0:52:45 | 0:52:48
"I should like to keep it for myself. | 0:52:48 | 0:52:50
"But if you are really determined to get your hat back, | 0:52:50 | 0:52:54
"you must climb up my long, long neck to get it." | 0:52:54 | 0:52:57
Hamilton looked up at the giraffe's long, long legs and long, long neck. | 0:52:57 | 0:53:01
It is not easy for little pigs to climb, | 0:53:01 | 0:53:04
but Hamilton did want his hat back. | 0:53:04 | 0:53:06
And so he decided to do it. | 0:53:06 | 0:53:09
It was horrid. | 0:53:09 | 0:53:11
The giraffe kept wriggling her neck | 0:53:11 | 0:53:14
because she said Hamilton was so tickly. | 0:53:14 | 0:53:17
But Hamilton was determined. | 0:53:17 | 0:53:19
And so at last he got his hat. | 0:53:19 | 0:53:23
"Whee!" he cried, as he slid down the back of the giraffe's neck | 0:53:23 | 0:53:27
and bumped down to the ground. | 0:53:27 | 0:53:29
"I am a very determined pig and I have my hat." | 0:53:29 | 0:53:34
The next day, Hamilton the Pig was out and about | 0:53:34 | 0:53:37
when he came across a crocodile. | 0:53:37 | 0:53:41
Hamilton was wearing a fierce, pointy, | 0:53:41 | 0:53:44
snap-your-tail-off sort of hat. | 0:53:44 | 0:53:46
"My hat makes me almost as fierce as you," he said to the crocodile. | 0:53:46 | 0:53:51
The crocodile yawned, and with a quick slurpity-slurp, | 0:53:51 | 0:53:55
snaffled the hat deep inside his mouth. | 0:53:55 | 0:53:58
"Slurp! Hmm, indeed. A very gobblesome hat. | 0:53:58 | 0:54:01
"I should like to eat it for my dinner," drooled the crocodile, | 0:54:01 | 0:54:05
ignoring the raging pink piglet. | 0:54:05 | 0:54:07
"But if you are really brave enough to get your hat back, | 0:54:07 | 0:54:10
"you must come inside my hungry, hungry jaws to get it." | 0:54:10 | 0:54:14
Hamilton looked at the crocodile's hungry, hungry jaws | 0:54:14 | 0:54:18
and his hungry, hungry smile. | 0:54:18 | 0:54:19
It is not easy for little pigs to jump inside a crocodile's mouth, | 0:54:19 | 0:54:24
but Hamilton did want his hat back. | 0:54:24 | 0:54:26
And so he decided to do it. | 0:54:26 | 0:54:29
It was terrifying. | 0:54:29 | 0:54:31
The crocodile kept licking his lips | 0:54:31 | 0:54:33
because he said Hamilton was so tasty. | 0:54:33 | 0:54:36
But Hamilton was brave, and so, at last, he got his hat. | 0:54:36 | 0:54:41
"Hoorah!" he shouted, as he leapt off the crocodile's tongue | 0:54:41 | 0:54:45
and ran off as fast as he could. | 0:54:45 | 0:54:47
"I am a very determined and brave pig and I have my hat!" | 0:54:47 | 0:54:52
The next day, Hamilton the Pig was out and about | 0:54:52 | 0:54:56
when he met a band of monkeys. | 0:54:56 | 0:54:58
Hamilton was wearing a round, | 0:54:58 | 0:55:00
bouncy, let's-play-catch sort of hat. | 0:55:00 | 0:55:03
"My hat makes me almost as playful as you," | 0:55:03 | 0:55:06
he said to the band of monkeys. | 0:55:06 | 0:55:08
The monkeys laughed. With a quick flick of the tail, | 0:55:08 | 0:55:11
one monkey swiped the hat and threw it to his friend. | 0:55:11 | 0:55:14
"Hmm, indeed, a very fun hat. We should play with it every day," | 0:55:14 | 0:55:19
cried the monkeys, ignoring the angry piggy in the middle. | 0:55:19 | 0:55:24
"But if you are patient, you can have it back when we are finished." | 0:55:24 | 0:55:29
Hamilton watched the monkeys throw his hat high, high into the air. | 0:55:29 | 0:55:34
It is not easy for little pigs to be patient, | 0:55:34 | 0:55:37
but Hamilton did want his hat back. | 0:55:37 | 0:55:40
And so he decided to do it. | 0:55:40 | 0:55:42
Oh, poor Hamilton. It was boring. | 0:55:43 | 0:55:47
The monkeys played for hours | 0:55:47 | 0:55:49
because they said it was such fun teasing Hamilton. | 0:55:49 | 0:55:53
But Hamilton was patient, and so, in the end, he got his hat. | 0:55:53 | 0:55:59
"At last," he sighed, | 0:55:59 | 0:56:01
as he said goodbye to the monkeys and plodded off. | 0:56:01 | 0:56:05
"I am a very determined, brave and patient pig, and I have my hat." | 0:56:05 | 0:56:10
The next day, it was cold. | 0:56:11 | 0:56:13
Hamilton the Pig was out and about as usual when he spied a tiny mouse. | 0:56:13 | 0:56:19
Hamilton was wearing a soft, teeny, let's-cuddle-up sort of hat. | 0:56:19 | 0:56:24
"My hat makes me almost as small as you," he said to the mouse. | 0:56:24 | 0:56:28
The tiny mouse sniffed and looked up at the hat. | 0:56:28 | 0:56:32
A slow, miserable tear rolled down her cheek. | 0:56:32 | 0:56:35
"What's the matter?" asked Hamilton. | 0:56:35 | 0:56:38
"I'm cold and I have no house to live in. | 0:56:38 | 0:56:41
"Your hat looks so cuddly and warm. | 0:56:41 | 0:56:43
"It would be just the thing to curl up inside on a winter's night." | 0:56:43 | 0:56:47
"You want to sleep in my hat?!" squealed Hamilton, horrified. | 0:56:47 | 0:56:51
"Oh, no," said the tiny mouse. | 0:56:51 | 0:56:53
"I could not possibly ask you to be so kind as to give me your hat." | 0:56:53 | 0:56:58
Hamilton looked at the mouse as she limped unhappily away. | 0:56:58 | 0:57:02
It is not easy for little pigs to be generous, and Hamilton did not | 0:57:02 | 0:57:07
want to give his hat away, but he decided to do it. | 0:57:07 | 0:57:11
It was nice. | 0:57:11 | 0:57:12
The mouse kept shaking his hand and saying thank you | 0:57:12 | 0:57:16
because she said Hamilton was so kind. | 0:57:16 | 0:57:19
"Ah!" said Hamilton. | 0:57:19 | 0:57:21
"I am a very determined, brave, patient and kind pig, | 0:57:21 | 0:57:25
"but I have no hat." | 0:57:25 | 0:57:27
So, happy, hungry and hatless, Hamilton the Pig arrived home | 0:57:27 | 0:57:32
and set to work on a new and very special hat. | 0:57:32 | 0:57:37
And that story was called Hamilton's Hats. | 0:57:38 | 0:57:42
I really liked Hamilton's bouncy, let's-play-catch sort of hat. | 0:57:42 | 0:57:46
Which was your favourite? Hmm? Good choice. | 0:57:46 | 0:57:50
Tonight, I would like to dream of hats. | 0:57:50 | 0:57:52
Magic hats, hats that can dance, hats maybe made of gingerbread. | 0:57:52 | 0:57:57
But now it's time for you to journey into the world of dreams. | 0:57:57 | 0:58:02
So settle down, snuggle up and sleep tight. Night-night. | 0:58:02 | 0:58:06 |
