CBeebies Bedtime Story. | 0:15:03 | 0:15:05
Hello, my name's Tom. | 0:15:07 | 0:15:10
Are you here for a bedtime story? | 0:15:10 | 0:15:12
You are? | 0:15:12 | 0:15:13
Great, you're just in time. | 0:15:13 | 0:15:16
Tonight's story is set out at sea, | 0:15:16 | 0:15:19
so climb aboard and get yourself comfy. | 0:15:19 | 0:15:22
Ready? | 0:15:22 | 0:15:24
This story is called Captain Wag And The Polar Bears | 0:15:25 | 0:15:29
and it's by Michael Terry. | 0:15:29 | 0:15:31
Captain Wag and his crew, One-Eyed Jack and Old Scratch, | 0:15:33 | 0:15:37
were working on their new ship, The Saucy Paw, | 0:15:37 | 0:15:40
when Old Scratch saw something floating in the water. | 0:15:40 | 0:15:44
"Look, Captain, there be a bottle | 0:15:44 | 0:15:47
"and it looks like it's got a note inside," shouted Old Scratch. | 0:15:47 | 0:15:51
"Fish it out, shipmate, let's see what it says," ordered Captain Wag. | 0:15:51 | 0:15:56
Old Scratch pulled the bottle out of the water, took out the note | 0:15:56 | 0:16:00
and handed it to Captain Wag. "Shiver me timbers, lads! | 0:16:00 | 0:16:04
"It's from that dastardly cove pirate, Ginger Tom," | 0:16:04 | 0:16:07
cried Captain Wag. | 0:16:07 | 0:16:08
He read it out loud to his shipmates. | 0:16:08 | 0:16:11
"To whom may be reading this letter.... | 0:16:11 | 0:16:14
"And, oh, help! We're surrounded by hungry-looking polar bears. | 0:16:21 | 0:16:25
"Yours terrified, Pirate Ginger Tom. | 0:16:25 | 0:16:28
"PS, help!" | 0:16:28 | 0:16:30
"Stow everything we need on board and make sure there's plenty of food | 0:16:30 | 0:16:34
"and warm clothes," said Captain Wag. | 0:16:34 | 0:16:37
"That varmint Pirate Ginger Tom and his motley crew are in trouble | 0:16:37 | 0:16:41
"and we're the only ones who can rescue them." | 0:16:41 | 0:16:44
As they sailed north, the weather got colder and colder | 0:16:44 | 0:16:48
and then it started to snow so hard it became a blizzard. | 0:16:48 | 0:16:51
The snow started to settle and cover the ship | 0:16:53 | 0:16:56
but as they desperately scraped the snow, | 0:16:56 | 0:16:59
throwing it overboard, the blizzard died away | 0:16:59 | 0:17:02
and the sky cleared. | 0:17:02 | 0:17:03
Now they could see that they were surrounded by a sea of ice. | 0:17:03 | 0:17:07
Not a sound was to be heard in the freezing air, | 0:17:07 | 0:17:10
but straight ahead was a boat-shaped channel in the ice. | 0:17:10 | 0:17:15
"That must be where Pirate Ginger Tom went," declared Captain Wag. | 0:17:15 | 0:17:19
They sailed between great sheets of ice, | 0:17:19 | 0:17:21
just avoiding being crushed by towering icebergs. | 0:17:21 | 0:17:25
Sometimes they would see a walrus or a seal sitting on the ice, | 0:17:25 | 0:17:28
or swimming by their side. | 0:17:28 | 0:17:30
And then they saw Pirate Ginger Tom's ship in the distance. | 0:17:30 | 0:17:34
As they got nearer, | 0:17:34 | 0:17:36
they could see a crowd of polar bears trying to climb on board. | 0:17:36 | 0:17:39
"Come on, lads! It looks like we're just in time," cried Captain Wag. | 0:17:39 | 0:17:44
Ginger Tom's crew were running around the deck | 0:17:44 | 0:17:47
and up and down the rigging in fright, | 0:17:47 | 0:17:50
as the polar bears crowded round the ship, growling. | 0:17:50 | 0:17:53
Then Ginger Tom spotted The Saucy Paw. "It's a ship, lads! | 0:17:53 | 0:17:58
"We're saved." Captain Wag and his crew came alongside. | 0:17:58 | 0:18:02
"Get away from that ship, you varmints!" | 0:18:02 | 0:18:05
shouted Captain Wag to the polar bears. | 0:18:05 | 0:18:07
The polar bears stopped what they were doing | 0:18:07 | 0:18:10
and moved towards The Saucy Paw. | 0:18:10 | 0:18:13
Captain Wag, One-Eyed Jack and Old Scratch shook with fear | 0:18:13 | 0:18:17
as the polar bears came closer and closer. | 0:18:17 | 0:18:20
One enormous polar bear growled. | 0:18:20 | 0:18:22
"Who are you calling varmints?" | 0:18:23 | 0:18:26
Captain Wag spoke up, bravely, | 0:18:26 | 0:18:30
"I am Captain Wag and we are here to save Pirate Ginger Tom | 0:18:30 | 0:18:34
"and his crew from being eaten by you polar bears." | 0:18:34 | 0:18:38
"Eaten?" roared the bear, | 0:18:38 | 0:18:41
"Eaten? We don't want to eat those daft cats, | 0:18:41 | 0:18:44
"we just want to get this wreck off the ice, it's making such a mess. | 0:18:44 | 0:18:48
"Bits of wood, here, bits of rope, there, you can't move without | 0:18:48 | 0:18:52
"tripping over something and all those cats do is mew at us." | 0:18:52 | 0:18:56
Captain Wag was relieved and called up to Ginger Tom, | 0:18:56 | 0:19:00
"Ahoy, there, Ginger Tom, you old fool. | 0:19:00 | 0:19:03
"These bears are trying to help you, not eat you," he said, laughing. | 0:19:03 | 0:19:08
"If you come down, lend a hand, | 0:19:08 | 0:19:10
"we should be able to get your ship off this ice." | 0:19:10 | 0:19:13
So Ginger Tom and his crew sheepishly climbed down and, | 0:19:13 | 0:19:17
together with polar bears, Captain Wag, One-Eyed Jack | 0:19:17 | 0:19:21
and Old Scratch, they managed to push the ship off the ice. | 0:19:21 | 0:19:26
Ginger Tom turned to Captain Wag, "Thank you for coming | 0:19:26 | 0:19:29
"to our rescue, Wag. I will not forget such a brave deed." | 0:19:29 | 0:19:33
"You're a rogue, | 0:19:33 | 0:19:35
"but I couldn't leave you out here to freeze," | 0:19:35 | 0:19:38
said Captain Wag, putting his arm around Ginger Tom's shoulder. | 0:19:38 | 0:19:42
And Captain Wag and Pirate Ginger Tom laughed heartily and long, | 0:19:42 | 0:19:48
together. | 0:19:48 | 0:19:49
THEY LAUGH | 0:19:49 | 0:19:51
That story was called Captain Wag And The Polar Bears, | 0:19:51 | 0:19:55
I hope you enjoyed it. | 0:19:55 | 0:19:56
Now it's time for little shipmates like you to get to bed. | 0:19:56 | 0:20:01
So off you go, get tucked up and warm and cosy, | 0:20:01 | 0:20:05
I'll see you again soon for another bedtime story. | 0:20:05 | 0:20:09
Sleep tight. Night-night. | 0:20:09 | 0:20:12 |
