Hello. I'm Michael. Handrew and me are playing a game. | 0:15:05 | 0:15:09
I say something, and Handrew does the opposite. You watch. | 0:15:09 | 0:15:13
Up! | 0:15:13 | 0:15:14 | |
That's right, Handrew! Down is the opposite of up. | 0:15:15 | 0:15:20
Here's another one. | 0:15:20 | 0:15:21
Straight! | 0:15:21 | 0:15:23
That's right, too! Curvy is the opposite of straight. | 0:15:24 | 0:15:29
Well, in tonight's bedtime story, Nate meets an Opposite, | 0:15:29 | 0:15:34
who seems determined to get him into trouble. | 0:15:34 | 0:15:38
The story is called The Opposite. | 0:15:38 | 0:15:41
When Nate woke up one morning, | 0:15:41 | 0:15:44
the Opposite was standing on his ceiling staring down at him. | 0:15:44 | 0:15:51
"You can't stand on the ceiling!" said Nate. "Get down!" | 0:15:51 | 0:15:56
But the opposite happened, and it stayed where it was. | 0:15:56 | 0:16:03
"Dad!" cried Nate. "There's an Opposite on my ceiling!" | 0:16:03 | 0:16:08
"Where?" said Nate's dad, poking his head round the door. | 0:16:08 | 0:16:13
"There!" said Nate, pointing upwards. | 0:16:13 | 0:16:16
But the opposite had already happened, | 0:16:16 | 0:16:21
and it wasn't there any more. | 0:16:21 | 0:16:23
"Come on, Nate," said Nate's dad, | 0:16:23 | 0:16:26
"you don't usually make up stories to stay in bed." | 0:16:26 | 0:16:30
Nate came downstairs to start his breakfast. | 0:16:30 | 0:16:34
His mum poured out a bowlful of cornflakes. | 0:16:34 | 0:16:38
"You can do the milk yourself." she said. Nate always did this, | 0:16:38 | 0:16:42
it was one of the things he was best at. | 0:16:42 | 0:16:45
Nate took the milk in both hands and gently poured it over the cereal... | 0:16:45 | 0:16:51
but then the opposite happened. | 0:16:51 | 0:16:54
Instead of the milk pouring down, it poured up! Splashing all over | 0:16:54 | 0:17:01
the ceiling, then dripping down again all over the tablecloth. | 0:17:01 | 0:17:05
The Opposite grinned in the corner. | 0:17:05 | 0:17:08
"Oh, Nate!" said Nate's mum. "Look what you've done!" | 0:17:08 | 0:17:14
"It wasn't me!" cried Nate. "It was the Opposite, over there." | 0:17:14 | 0:17:20
And Nate pointed at the corner. | 0:17:20 | 0:17:22
But the opposite had already happened, | 0:17:22 | 0:17:25
and it wasn't there any more. | 0:17:25 | 0:17:28
"Come on, Nate," said Nate's mum, "you're not usually so clumsy." | 0:17:28 | 0:17:35
Nate walked into school and got ready for the first lesson. | 0:17:35 | 0:17:40
Nate's teacher asked the children | 0:17:40 | 0:17:42
to paint a picture of their favourite animal. | 0:17:42 | 0:17:46
Nate decided to paint an elephant. | 0:17:46 | 0:17:48
He took out his paint and paper and brush and made a start. | 0:17:48 | 0:17:53
But then the opposite happened. | 0:17:53 | 0:17:56
Instead of the paint going on the paper it went on Nate's head! | 0:17:56 | 0:18:01
Then on the floor, then on the walls, and then on his teacher! | 0:18:01 | 0:18:05
The paint went everywhere except on the paper | 0:18:05 | 0:18:09
which stayed as blank and clean as ever. The Opposite giggled | 0:18:09 | 0:18:14
from under the teacher's desk, right by the teacher's legs. | 0:18:14 | 0:18:20
"Oh, Nate," said Nate's teacher, "you're not usually so messy." | 0:18:20 | 0:18:26
"It wasn't me!" cried Nate. "It was the Opposite, under there." | 0:18:26 | 0:18:32
And Nate pointed at the teacher's desk, | 0:18:32 | 0:18:35
but the opposite had already happened, | 0:18:35 | 0:18:38
and it wasn't there any more. | 0:18:38 | 0:18:40
Nate stopped, and thought for a moment. | 0:18:40 | 0:18:44
Then he had an idea. | 0:18:45 | 0:18:49
Slowly, he pointed at the empty space in front of him. | 0:18:49 | 0:18:55
"I mean to say," said Nate, "that there isn't an Opposite | 0:18:57 | 0:19:03
"standing right in front of my finger." | 0:19:03 | 0:19:07
But then the opposite happened. | 0:19:07 | 0:19:09
Suddenly the Opposite WAS standing right in front of Nate, | 0:19:09 | 0:19:15
it blinked with surprise and looked a little worried. | 0:19:15 | 0:19:20
"I mean to say," said Nate, "that the work I've done today... | 0:19:20 | 0:19:27
"is messy, and untidy." | 0:19:27 | 0:19:31
But then the opposite happened. The Opposite bared its teeth. | 0:19:31 | 0:19:35
"Grr!" But it was too late. | 0:19:35 | 0:19:38
Nate's painting was now as tidy and perfect as you please. | 0:19:38 | 0:19:44
"And," said Nate, smiling, "I mean to say... | 0:19:44 | 0:19:50
"that I have so enjoyed having the Opposite with me today, | 0:19:50 | 0:19:58
"and I do hope it will stay around for ever and ever and ever!" | 0:19:58 | 0:20:04
But then the opposite happened. With a shriek... "Eek!" | 0:20:04 | 0:20:08
..and a hiss, the Opposite disappeared | 0:20:08 | 0:20:12
in a puff of green and yellow smoke. | 0:20:12 | 0:20:16
And that was that. | 0:20:16 | 0:20:17
Very quickly Nate's teacher and the rest of Nate's class | 0:20:17 | 0:20:22
persuaded themselves that they had never seen the Opposite | 0:20:22 | 0:20:26
and none of it had ever happened. But Nate knew what had happened. | 0:20:26 | 0:20:31
And now you do, too. | 0:20:31 | 0:20:34
And if you ever meet an Opposite, you'll know how to deal with it. | 0:20:34 | 0:20:39
The next morning, when Nate woke up, | 0:20:39 | 0:20:43
the Opposite was standing on the ceiling, staring down at him. | 0:20:43 | 0:20:50
"Oh good," said Nate. | 0:20:50 | 0:20:53
"I hope this story goes on for ever and EVER... | 0:20:53 | 0:20:59
"The end!" | 0:20:59 | 0:21:02
And that story was called The Opposite. | 0:21:02 | 0:21:06
You know, I think it would be really interesting to meet the Opposite. | 0:21:06 | 0:21:10
Oh, I wish that today went on for ever and ever. | 0:21:10 | 0:21:15
What? What's that, Handrew? | 0:21:15 | 0:21:18
Oh, I see. Handrew's pretending to be the Opposite and telling me | 0:21:18 | 0:21:24
that today can't go on forever because it's time to go to bed. | 0:21:24 | 0:21:29
But I'll see you soon for another story. Good night. | 0:21:30 | 0:21:35
Now, Handrew, I know another opposite. | 0:21:35 | 0:21:39
If you stay there, you're near. | 0:21:39 | 0:21:43
But if I go over here... | 0:21:43 | 0:21:46
I'm far, but the moment I say far, | 0:21:48 | 0:21:51
then the opposite is coming back right here! Yeah! See? | 0:21:51 | 0:21:54 |
