Do your family holidays fail to take off?

reaching for the emergency exit?

Well, I'm Captain Joe Swash, and it's time to take control.

Fasten Mum and Dad's seatbelts and check in to Gimme A Break,

the show where you take control of your family holiday.

Parents, prepare for turbulence.

On Gimme A Break, it's the kids who decide where to go and what to do.

Parents don't get a look-in, especially

when it comes to the holiday rules.

Breaking the rules can only lead to one thing - trouble!

Today, I'm in Hereford, and the lucky family who are about to be

given a dream break are the Campbells.

Animal-loving eight-year-old Kaitlyn,

13-year-old sister Callie, who loves art,

ironing enthusiast Dad, and Beyonce wannabe Mum.

So, why do Kaitlyn and Callie deserve to be given a break?

We need to be given a break

cos we always go camping and we're sick to death of it!

It's always wet and muddy and smelly.

We've camped in every weather, and I love it.

The horrible thing about our tent is when it rains, if you accidentally

touch the sides just once, all of the rain just goes, "Whoosh."

Mum and Dad are always kissing, especially on holidays,

cos they're together for more time than usual.

Mum goes, "All right, baby!"

-It's just nice to be together.

-It's the romance of camping.

Dad is obsessed with ironing.

He never, ever, ever will wear something creased.

I actually did take my iron away with us on the last trip.

We go glamping now, which is a glamorous type of camping,

cos Dad desperately needs electricity so he can iron all of his clothes!

I don't want anything crinkled on my holiday, including my socks

and underpants!

My mum cannot live without her high heels.

She always has to take them everywhere she goes.

Even if it's camping.

I'm only five foot, I love my heels. I have to take them everywhere.

Mum and Dad had better watch out.

When we're in charge,

things are going to be a little bit different!

We're going to enjoy this holiday, and there'll be plenty more of this.

Right, Mum and Dad, I've been speaking to the girls -

they're sick of camping!

They're fed up of the rain. Am I right?

-GIRLS: Yep!

-Had enough of this?

GIRLS: Yes!

Well, it's that time of the show

that has parents quaking in their boots.

-GIRLS: Yes!

-Are you ready to boss Mum and Dad about?

Well, before we go off and talk about our break, Dad, look.

My mum ain't been about, so if you could do

my ironing, that would be fantastic.

-No probs!

-Thanks! Come on, girls!

Shall we go and talk about the breaks? Come on!

Now, remember, you're the bosses, all right?

Mum and Dad have to do as you say.

So what I need to know is what you want from a holiday.

-I think we'd like something different.

-Yeah.

-Either something hot or cold.

-OK.

I know you want extreme weather, but what about extreme activities?

-Skiing.

-Skiing!

-Snowboarding.

-Snowboarding!

I like arty stuff and animals.

OK, so I feel I've got quite a lot to go on.

'I've listened to what Kaitlyn and Callie have had to say.'

I've put together two brilliant breaks for them to choose from,

but first, I need to work out what's on offer by cracking

a selection of cunning clues.

Let's see how they get on with break number one.

Look, a card!

He's a composer. He must come from the Alps.

I've heard of Mozart before from old teachers, and I've heard

his music, and I think most definitely he lives in Switzerland.

Those old teachers don't know their geography

if they think that Mozart's from Switzerland.

It's on a mountain.

It says "boarding pass", so it's snowboarding or something.

These girls are good, but can they to work out

what a fish donned with diamonds is all about?

Mountain again!

"I'm a skate!"

It's a skate, a blingy skate.

Yeah. We could go shopping.

-Mmm, that'd be good.

-Shopping for bling?

These girls have expensive taste,

and they're also way out with that guess!

Will they fare any better with the clues for break number two?

Pick up the card.

"Ride the skateboards to find your next clue.

"Could this sandy break be the one for you?"

Sandpaper's on the board. Sandboarding.

I think it's sandboarding,

and I think that'll be ace, because none of us have done it before.

By the looks of their techniques,

I'm not convinced they've ever been skateboarding before either.

But at least it's got them to the next clue safe and sound.

Kites, Kaitlyn. "Pow!" and "Ergh!"

Power!

Clever!

-Power - para-gliding.

-Paragliding, eh?

Good guess, but I think you'll find it's power kiting.

Let's see if they do any better with the next clue.

Quite a lot of birds are yellow. What about a canary? The Canary Islands!

I am very excited about this break.

I think it will be a hard decision between me and my sister,

since we don't agree on anything.

Well, the girls better learn to agree real quick,

because it's time for them to pick their favourite break.

Break number one - where did you think this break was to?

-BOTH: Switzerland.

-In Switzerland. You had some clues,

-didn't you?

-Yeah.

-You didn't get the skate. Shall I help you with this one?

-Yes, please.

OK, right. I have Mr Skate with me now.

-What's he wearing round his neck?

-Diamonds.

-Ice!

-Ice-skate!

-Ice-skate! That's right!

-Do you want to know where break number one is?

Right, I can tell you that break number one is a snowboard

adventure holiday to Austria!

-Wow!

-Let's have a look.

If you're raring for a piste of the action, then look no further than

the sensational slopes of Obergurgl in Austria.

You'll learn how to snowboard like dudes, ice-skate like

Torvill and Dean, and you'll get the chance to

ride husky sleds. Yodel-ay!

If you love golden beaches and adrenaline activities,

Fuerteventura in the Canary Islands is the place to go.

Sandboarding and power kiting are all on offer,

and you'll also make goat's cheese, an island speciality.

So, guys, there's two breaks on offer.

Is it going to be a tough decision?

We don't agree much, it's going to be hard!

So, the Campbell family are off to awesome Austria,

but how will Mum and Dad cope with the slippery slopes?

And who will win the final showdown to bag the holiday souvenir?

It's nearly holiday time,

but first, the girls have to get cracking with Mum and Dad's packing.

-Shall we take this?

-Yes, his Hawaiian shirt.

-I'm folding, I'm going to be Dad's favourite!

-No!

-I am folding!

-No!

In the past, I've pretty much ironed everything, folded it neatly,

and sometimes folded it with coat hangers as well,

ready to hang it straight up.

-Oh, my!

-All these labels!

-"I don't need this!"

Shall we give them her to torment her?

-And we won't let her wear them.

-Exactly.

I think when my girls start packing,

I'd like to think that one of them would fold it.

Ideally, that would be Callie.

But I think once Kaitlyn gets a hold of it, it's just going to be mayhem.

Callie, take it back!

The only thing that has really surprised me is

how uncomfortable I am not knowing where I'm going,

because I control more or less everything, and it's the only thing

I can't control and I haven't been able to control,

and it's doing my head in.

-We've got a big problem.

-What?

-Mum hasn't got any warm clothes.

-Yes!

-Yeah, we've done it!

-Where's the steps?

-Now that the packing is done, it's time for

Callie and Kaitlyn to reveal all to Mum and Dad.

-Do you want to know where you're going?

Now, here's a little clue!

-It's snow, Mum!

Snowy Austria? No!

The girls have done all right,

as it's all smiles in the Campbell household.

And once Mum's finished spraying everyone with snow,

it's time for their Austrian break to get going.

It's a two-hour flight to Innsbruck in Austria,

where German is the official and most widely-spoken language.

-Oh, very nice.

-It's late evening at the Obergurgl ski resort,

and the Campbells have just arrived at their luxury hotel.

After checking in, checking out their rooms

and sorting out sleeping arrangements...

-This is our room!

-GIRLS: No, it's not! No, go away!

-..it's time to unpack the bags.

Will the girls get a frosty reception when

Mum and Dad find out what's been packed?

If I was going nightclubbing somewhere,

then I'd give you probably six out of ten,

but because I'm here and I'm in a ski resort, I'll give you two.

I'm a bit surprised how you're saying what our packing's like.

-I thought it was quite good!

-I think we need a bigger thankyou!

-Do you?!

Brilliant, I think they'll have to agree to disagree on that one.

It's the first morning of the Campbells' break,

and the girls decide to take Mum and Dad out for an early-morning

stroll to reinforce who's in charge and lay down some holiday rules.

Are you all having an ice time in snowy Austria?

ALL: Yes!

So, it's time for Callie

and Kaitlyn's Gimme A Break holiday rules.

-Parents, prepare yourselves for some chilling news.

-Nightmare.

Dad, rule number one is for you.

The girls are bored of your obsession with ironing,

so on this break, ironing is forbidden.

Yeah, no ironing, Dad.

I'm not happy, but I'll put up with it for the girls.

Onto rule number two. Mum, there'll be no high heels on this break.

-What did you pack them for, then?

-Just to torment you.

-Did you?

-Yeah.

Thanks(!) That's rubbish!

And rule number three is for both Mum and Dad.

-The kids are sick of you being all lovey-dovey on family holidays.

-OK!

As of this moment, the lips are officially to be put on ice.

I think I'm too cold to kiss anyway.

There will be major consequences if either of you break these rules.

Mum, I hear you don't like ketchup.

It's horrible.

If you break either of your rules, Callie and Kaitlyn are going

to make you eat ketchup. Oof.

No, thanks.

And Dad, the girls have decided that if you break a rule,

you're going to be made to wear a crinkled outfit out in public.

Oh, the shame of it!

I think I've got the worst one! I'm not very happy.

I won't be breaking any rules.

with the first activity, some boarding action,

Now that the Campbells are kitted out and looking rad,

it's time to hook up with boarding instructor Simon

and hit the slopes.

Hello, guys.

Hi!

First lesson for the Campbells, strapping one leg to the board

to master balance, and some members of the family

are finding it harder than others.

Please help!

It's really good, fun but it's hard to stand up straight!

Check Kaitlyn out! She's the first to master it.

I love the fact that the girls are in charge today

cos we get to do things like this, and we'd never do this, camping.

Not in a million years.

Now that they've mastered boarding on one foot,

instructor Simon decides that they're ready for the next level.

Put both legs in the bindings and we're trying

to be real snowboarders, OK?

Callie's the first to give it a go with two feet.

Next up, it's Kaitlyn.

Dad's turn to give it a crack.

I love seeing him fall over!

Lovely support there from Mum, but will she do any better?

Woooo!

Nope.

My bum cheeks are killing me.

Mum keeps falling over, but I said she'd be the one to fall over most.

Go, Kaitlyn! She's got it!

On the hills now!

Oh, yeah. And a stylish crash to finish.

It's good being better than Mum and Dad

because they think they're good at everything

but it proves that they're not.

After two hours on the slopes and lots of falling over,

the family are starting to look like pro snowboarders.

I'm actually really, really enjoying it.

Something I didn't think I would ever really get enjoyment from.

But I am. Loving it.

The Campbells are doing so well that Simon decides

it's time for a challenge.

You see the sign there? It would be sweet if everyone gets to the sign.

I think the dad's going to win. That'll be me.

I've just been messing about up till now, but just watch out.

That sign's going down.

I think that Callie's going to win.

I think Kaitlyn's will win.

That's it.

The talking's over. First up, it's speed demon Kaitlyn.

Look at her go!

Oh, get in! She's made it all the way to the sign

like a snowboarding pro.

Woo hoo!

Can Callie match her? It's a good start.

Not a bad effort. Oh, but she's fallen short.

Next up, it's Mum.

And she's got off to a flyer.

Woo!

That was amazing!

Well done, Mum! Can competitive Dad make it

to the bottom without falling over? He's looking a bit wobbly.

No, he can't.

And the winner was... Kaitlyn. Kaitlyn. Awesome!

Kaitlyn won, but the prize for falling over the most is not clear.

I didn't fall the most!

You did. You fell over, like, loads of times.

Whatever!

To keep the slipping and sliding theme going,

the girls take Mum and Dad to an ice rink,

and Kaitlyn's not letting Mum forget who's the boss.

I'm in charge. Can you hurry up, please?

I'm doing the best I can! I don't know how they work!

The Campbell family have the entire ice rink to themselves,

and they'll need it, because none of them can ice-skate.

To kick things off, Simon the instructor gets them

to practice skating with a chair.

Kaitlyn and Mum are looking pretty good.

It's easier with your chair.

I'm not sure Dad and Callie are convinced.

We're scared about going on the ice, aren't we, Dad?

Yeah, I really don't want to get on the ice.

Callie's the first to overcome her fears and give it a go.

-It's slippy.

-It is.

And check out Mum! She's the first to skate chairless.

Kaitlyn's soon to follow. And be the first to fall over.

I can see a pattern emerging here.

Seven falls so far!

After seeing the rest of the family take to the ice,

Dad's finally plucked up the courage to join them.

Check out the concentration on his face,

eyes firmly focused on the chair.

Well done, Dad. What a pro.

To be honest, if the girls weren't in charge,

I probably wouldn't have tried it.

And I'm glad in a really small way that I've tried it.

We all think this is much better than our normal holidays

cos our normal holidays are, like, boring.

We've had a brilliant day and the icing on the cake's

coming here... It's brilliant.

Who else gets to have a whole ice rink to themselves?

After slipping and sliding, and a lot of falling over from Kaitlyn...

18 falls!

..I think it's safe to say that they'll be some tired legs

and bums in the Campbell camp tonight.

It's the next morning, and the girls face a family transport decision.

On this break there is no time to chill

and there are two different ways to get down this hill.

There are toboggans on offer for all if you choose

Or Mum and Dad can hike in a pair of snowshoes.

Will they choose the nippy toboggans

or will they opt for Mum and Dad to wear snowshoes?

The choice is theirs.

-Do you fancy snowshoes?

-No, I don't. I want to go on a toboggan.

-We're in charge, so you can go in the snowshoes. Deal?

-Yeah.

Right, go on, then. Go get your snow shoes on.

Decision made, and there's nothing Mum and Dad can do about it.

Although I don't think they're too happy.

This is pants.

Just stop moaning.

-I'm not moaning.

Give us a kiss, they're not watching.

Uh-oh. That's a blatant rule-break.

You'd better hope the girls didn't see it.

Oh, dear.

Mum! Dad!

They're kissing!

That rule-break will come back to haunt Mum and Dad.

But first there's some toboggan action to be had.

There's mum, Kaitlyn.

-All right, you two?

-No, we're not.

-Having fun?

I've just walked down half a mountain.

You've suffered enough. Hop on.

So, the girls decide that Mum and Dad have done enough walking,

which means it's race time.

We came second!

I love the kids being in charge, it's great.

Never had so much fun, it's like being a kid again.

After the frozen excitement of tobogganing,

Callie and Kaitlyn deal with Mum and Dad's rule break.

Ironing-mad Dad's worst nightmare has just become reality,

as he's got to wear a creased outfit for dinner. Oh, the shame of it!

I'm hoping the meal's going to be better than the clothes I'm wearing.

We're in charge, and we get to decide what we eat.

And we get to decide for you as well.

And what are we having? Crinkled chips?

-To match your shirt!

-Yeah, thanks.

-We could do, actually.

I'm going to have the Ice Burger.

I'll have the Wintry Wiener Snowy Schnitzel.

What shall we pick for Mum and Dad?

I think you can both have the fondue.

So, it's an Ice Burger for Kaitlyn, a Wiener Schnitzel for Callie,

and a Fabulous Fondue for Mum and Dad. Yum yum.

Let's eat.

That is really nice.

The mains are going down well, but it's all about to change.

Mum's also broken a rule, so she has to face the consequence.

-Ketchup!

-Disgusting.

-Sorry.

-That's enough, I'm not eating all that!

We're in charge, you broke a rule, you've got to eat it.

Oh, it's awful.

-Do I have to eat it all?

-Yes!

-Well done, Mum.

-Lesson learned there, mum.

Now it's time for the piece de resistance, the dessert.

-We'll have one of them!

-Oh, yes.

The girls have chosen a rich white and dark chocolate fondue

with a scrumptious selection of dipping delights.

Delicioso!

-Yum!

-I think that this is the best banquet

I have ever had in my whole entire life.

It looks like the chocolate dessert is a hit,

and I think Dad's even forgotten he's wearing a creased outfit.

It's the final day of the Campbells' break,

and it's also Dad's birthday.

Seeing as it's Dad's special day,

the girls have decided that the whole family deserve a treat.

Dad, we're going to be doing this.

half-husky, half-collie Meggie, Dino and Tiger,

because they're going to take you for a ride in their sled.

But first, a quick bit of advice from head musher Martin.

She's got one on her elbows, and she's got one on her hand.

What were the ones on her arms? That was from ice-skating.

She said they hurt.
