Homeless Finbar is tested for deadly diseases... | 0:00:04 | 0:00:07
..a pony in pain needs top level surgery... | 0:00:08 | 0:00:11
..and a VIP patient comes in for some high-tech treatment. | 0:00:13 | 0:00:16
When pets are poorly, wildlife gets wounded or farm animals feel unwell, | 0:00:21 | 0:00:25
they need top vet help. | 0:00:25 | 0:00:27
The really lucky ones come here, | 0:00:29 | 0:00:31
to Edinburgh University's amazing super high-tech vet school. | 0:00:31 | 0:00:34
And now, six kids, chosen from 1,000, | 0:00:41 | 0:00:44
have become the first ever children allowed to enrol here... | 0:00:44 | 0:00:47
I'm all ready. | 0:00:49 | 0:00:50
..and work alongside the school's top vets. | 0:00:50 | 0:00:54
Who wants to take this cow's urine? | 0:00:54 | 0:00:57
They're facing an intense training programme... | 0:00:57 | 0:00:59
-Have you done that anaesthetic before? -What's that? What's that? | 0:00:59 | 0:01:03
..and are being pushed to the limit at animal hospitals, | 0:01:03 | 0:01:06
vet practices, wildlife parks and working farms. | 0:01:06 | 0:01:11
I'm Paul Manktelow. | 0:01:11 | 0:01:12
It took me five hard years to train to be a vet, | 0:01:12 | 0:01:15
but this lot have only weeks to show me what they're made of. | 0:01:15 | 0:01:20
My junior vets have hardly been around animals before. | 0:01:20 | 0:01:23
That's so cool. | 0:01:23 | 0:01:24
Now they are facing real heavy duty vet work. | 0:01:24 | 0:01:27
It's, like, everything's just so bonkers. | 0:01:28 | 0:01:31
-That is amazing. -That's cool. | 0:01:34 | 0:01:36
Have they got the stomach to succeed? | 0:01:36 | 0:01:38
I feel like a real vet. | 0:01:38 | 0:01:40
And can they stay calm under extreme pressure? | 0:01:40 | 0:01:43
Six raw recruits... | 0:01:46 | 0:01:48
..but...I can only choose... | 0:01:51 | 0:01:54
one winner. | 0:01:54 | 0:01:56
The first ever junior vet to win the prestigious head vet title... | 0:01:56 | 0:02:02
..is... | 0:02:02 | 0:02:03
It's day five... and we're nearly half-way | 0:02:13 | 0:02:17
to finding out who will be named my head vet. | 0:02:17 | 0:02:20
My junior vets have come a long way already, | 0:02:20 | 0:02:23
but they're just about to find out how tough vet work can get. | 0:02:23 | 0:02:27
Junior vets, welcome back to vet school, | 0:02:27 | 0:02:29
are you enjoying the experience? | 0:02:29 | 0:02:31
-ALL: Yeah. -OK, today's teams are... | 0:02:31 | 0:02:34
..Morgan and Amblessed... Sam and Will...Lauren and Saira. | 0:02:35 | 0:02:40
Let's get down to business. | 0:02:40 | 0:02:42
Today, some of them will be working with the top vets here at vet school | 0:02:42 | 0:02:45
and one team is going out to a specialist horse hospital. | 0:02:45 | 0:02:49
They'll all be dealing with real animals that need their help. | 0:02:49 | 0:02:54
I'll be keeping a close eye on them all day. | 0:02:54 | 0:02:56
Only those who really impress me will be in with a chance of winning | 0:02:56 | 0:02:59
a vital vet work award, | 0:02:59 | 0:03:01
and moving one step closer to being named head vet. | 0:03:01 | 0:03:05
Pack leader so far is Saira. | 0:03:05 | 0:03:08
She came to vet school really scared of big dogs, | 0:03:08 | 0:03:11
but she's conquered her fears... | 0:03:11 | 0:03:12
Hello. | 0:03:12 | 0:03:14
..and she's now thinking like a vet | 0:03:14 | 0:03:16
and handling her patients and their owners brilliantly. | 0:03:16 | 0:03:19
I'm one of the junior vets today. It's good news. | 0:03:19 | 0:03:22
But she needs to watch out for Will. | 0:03:22 | 0:03:24
He's flying and fancies his chances of taking the top title. | 0:03:24 | 0:03:28
With three operations under his belt, he's building up some serious | 0:03:28 | 0:03:32
surgical experience. | 0:03:32 | 0:03:33
-Another clamp. Same style clamp again. -This one? -That will be fine. | 0:03:33 | 0:03:36
And he's keen to take on bigger challenges. | 0:03:36 | 0:03:39
Awesome! | 0:03:39 | 0:03:40
But how will he perform when he eventually gets his wish? | 0:03:40 | 0:03:43
Let's find out. | 0:03:43 | 0:03:45
At the horse hospital in Northumberland, | 0:03:52 | 0:03:54
ten-year-old pony, Henry, faces a critical day. | 0:03:54 | 0:03:57
He's normally a prize-winning show pony, but today he's a non-runner. | 0:03:59 | 0:04:04
Poor Henry has a painfully swollen ankle and he needs urgent help. | 0:04:04 | 0:04:07
Thankfully Henry's got a top team on his side. | 0:04:10 | 0:04:13
International super vet Cedric Chan travels the world healing horses | 0:04:13 | 0:04:17
and today, Will and Sam have left vet school to help him. | 0:04:17 | 0:04:20
Cedric is a really cool guy, | 0:04:20 | 0:04:22
because he's sort of flying around the world. | 0:04:22 | 0:04:24
He'd just come back from France and I think he was going to Singapore. | 0:04:24 | 0:04:27
Yeah, he's amazing that guy. | 0:04:27 | 0:04:30
This is Henry. He's our patient for today. | 0:04:30 | 0:04:33
We know he's got a problem in his left hind leg and an arthritic | 0:04:33 | 0:04:36
problem in his ankle joint, they call it the "hock" in horses. | 0:04:36 | 0:04:39
What we're going to do today is an operation to try | 0:04:39 | 0:04:41
and get that arthritis better. | 0:04:41 | 0:04:43
Arthritis is a nasty condition that results in sore | 0:04:45 | 0:04:48
and swollen bone joints. | 0:04:48 | 0:04:50
In extreme cases, it can be incredibly painful. | 0:04:50 | 0:04:53
This is the X-ray of Henry's ankle. | 0:04:53 | 0:04:57
Now, can you see that black line running across here? | 0:04:57 | 0:05:00
Normally, that should be a beautiful, clear black line, but can you see | 0:05:00 | 0:05:03
-there are bits that have been lost there across that line? -Yeah. | 0:05:03 | 0:05:06
Cedric and his team are going to drill away tissue called cartilage | 0:05:08 | 0:05:12
in Henry's ankle joint. | 0:05:12 | 0:05:14
It may sound strange, but when the bones fuse together, | 0:05:14 | 0:05:17
the pain Henry is currently feeling will hopefully disappear. | 0:05:17 | 0:05:21
It's extreme surgery that no other junior vet has faced before. | 0:05:23 | 0:05:27
Go on, Henry. | 0:05:27 | 0:05:28
Will and Sam are leading Henry to the biggest operation of his life. | 0:05:28 | 0:05:32
And as Henry is anaesthetised, his legs will give way, | 0:05:35 | 0:05:38
so they must ensure he doesn't hurt himself as he falls. | 0:05:38 | 0:05:41
First, Henry's feet and legs are covered in sterile drapes | 0:05:48 | 0:05:51
to protect him from germs during surgery. | 0:05:51 | 0:05:53
Then a tube is put into his windpipe that pumps a gas into his lungs. | 0:05:56 | 0:06:00
This will help him breathe and keep him unconscious for the entire op. | 0:06:00 | 0:06:04
Now Henry is asleep, the junior vets need to quickly get him | 0:06:04 | 0:06:07
onto a huge horse-sized operating table, | 0:06:07 | 0:06:09
and with Henry weighing in at a whopping 300 kilos, | 0:06:09 | 0:06:12
they need specialised lifting kit to get him there. | 0:06:12 | 0:06:15
When I saw Henry upside-down and moving along the room, it was | 0:06:15 | 0:06:19
really weird, and the fact that I was in charge of putting him | 0:06:19 | 0:06:24
safely down on the operating table, as well... | 0:06:24 | 0:06:26
And then Will makes sure he's nice and secure. | 0:06:27 | 0:06:30
With Henry in position for the op, Will and Sam must make sure | 0:06:35 | 0:06:39
they're fully scrubbed and gowned for surgery. | 0:06:39 | 0:06:41
Any germs or dirt could be really dangerous. | 0:06:41 | 0:06:44
That's good, just drop it down. That will do perfect. | 0:06:48 | 0:06:50
If today's operation is successful, | 0:06:50 | 0:06:52
it will save Henry from years of pain. | 0:06:52 | 0:06:55
I'm pleased to see Will is really starting to think like a vet now. | 0:06:56 | 0:07:00
Where will the holes be going? | 0:07:00 | 0:07:01
You feel the bump on the inside of the ankle, the hock, there, | 0:07:01 | 0:07:04
that's approximately where we're going to drill. | 0:07:04 | 0:07:06
And will this operation guarantee to actually fix all of these problems? | 0:07:06 | 0:07:12
It's never a 100% guarantee, but we normally give the owner | 0:07:12 | 0:07:16
a prognosis of about 70 to 80% for this procedure. | 0:07:16 | 0:07:19
Right then, we're ready to go. | 0:07:19 | 0:07:22
Cedric's ready...but are Sam and Will ready to help him help Henry? | 0:07:22 | 0:07:26
I'm really excited about what I'm about to do, because it's | 0:07:26 | 0:07:29
really different. I've never done anything like it before. | 0:07:29 | 0:07:31
It makes me feel like a real vet. | 0:07:31 | 0:07:34
Later, the junior vets are primed for action | 0:07:34 | 0:07:37
in case Henry needs their help. | 0:07:37 | 0:07:39
I think he's just a bit still shaky, so we'll just see how it unfolds. | 0:07:39 | 0:07:44
On his way to vet school from a local dog and cat home | 0:07:48 | 0:07:51
is stray cat Finbar. | 0:07:51 | 0:07:53
And waiting to receive him at the small animal hospital | 0:07:53 | 0:07:56
are junior vets Lauren and Saira. | 0:07:56 | 0:07:58
There's our cat. | 0:07:58 | 0:08:00
Homeless Finbar faces two critical tests today. | 0:08:01 | 0:08:05
-Hello. -You can take Finbar, then. | 0:08:05 | 0:08:07
We needed to make sure he didn't have any diseases | 0:08:07 | 0:08:12
that could be transferred to any other animals. | 0:08:12 | 0:08:16
If the results are good, he could be up for re-homing. | 0:08:16 | 0:08:19
But if it's bad news Finbar will spend the rest of his life | 0:08:19 | 0:08:22
living indoors. | 0:08:22 | 0:08:24
Today, Saira and Lauren will be assisting vet Jane Brown. | 0:08:24 | 0:08:27
Hello, there. | 0:08:27 | 0:08:29
Hello. | 0:08:29 | 0:08:30
Hello, Finbar. | 0:08:30 | 0:08:32
Their first job is to relax Finbar for an external examination. | 0:08:32 | 0:08:36
Yes, he's enjoying that, isn't he? | 0:08:36 | 0:08:38
He looks OK, | 0:08:38 | 0:08:39
but the team now need to test him for two contagious diseases | 0:08:39 | 0:08:43
called feline immunodeficiency virus and feline leukaemia virus. | 0:08:43 | 0:08:48
Both are harmless to humans but can be deadly to cats. | 0:08:48 | 0:08:51
If he has either, it will be very difficult to find him a new home. | 0:08:51 | 0:08:55
Finbar's a really lovely cat, he's nice and playful. | 0:08:55 | 0:08:58
He's just really nice. I really love him. | 0:08:58 | 0:09:01
-He likes you! -Tell you what, I'm keeping you. | 0:09:01 | 0:09:05
He's cute and gentle now, but Finbar arrived with a feisty reputation. | 0:09:05 | 0:09:09
Stray cats often have to scrap to survive, | 0:09:09 | 0:09:12
and serious diseases are passed on by bites and scratches. | 0:09:12 | 0:09:16
Now, have you noticed on Finbar's face what he's got over his nose? | 0:09:16 | 0:09:19
He's got a scratch on his nose. | 0:09:19 | 0:09:21
Yeah, he's a stray and he's a big lad | 0:09:21 | 0:09:23
and he's been out defending his territory. | 0:09:23 | 0:09:26
A blood sample is taken... | 0:09:26 | 0:09:28
That's a good boy. | 0:09:28 | 0:09:29
..then Saira carefully transfers the blood from the syringe | 0:09:29 | 0:09:32
to a sample tube so it can be tested. | 0:09:32 | 0:09:35
Perfect, OK. That will be fine. | 0:09:35 | 0:09:37
These results really will be life changing for Finbar. | 0:09:37 | 0:09:40
I need to have an important chat with my junior vets. | 0:09:40 | 0:09:43
Both of these viruses are highly contiguous, | 0:09:43 | 0:09:46
and if Finbar has got these diseases he wouldn't get a new home. | 0:09:46 | 0:09:50
It would be really difficult to re-home him. | 0:09:50 | 0:09:52
-Is there any cure to it, or...? -No. | 0:09:52 | 0:09:55
If the tests came back positive for Finbar, | 0:09:58 | 0:10:01
it wouldn't have been a very nice life for him, | 0:10:01 | 0:10:04
he wouldn't have been allowed outside. | 0:10:04 | 0:10:06
I think because Finbar was a stray cat, | 0:10:06 | 0:10:08
I knew that he had a higher chance of having these viruses. | 0:10:08 | 0:10:13
First, some of Finbar's blood is mixed with a special chemical. | 0:10:14 | 0:10:17
You just need one drop in each one. | 0:10:17 | 0:10:20
It will take ten minutes for the chemical to react with | 0:10:20 | 0:10:23
the blood and produce a final result. | 0:10:23 | 0:10:25
So, one line means he's in the clear, and two lines is bad news. | 0:10:25 | 0:10:31
So fingers crossed... | 0:10:33 | 0:10:34
And later, Saira and Lauren discover Finbar's fate. | 0:10:36 | 0:10:39
-I can see one line starting to appear, can you? -Yeah. -Oh, yeah. | 0:10:39 | 0:10:42
-As long as we don't get a second one. -We don't want any more. | 0:10:42 | 0:10:45
In another part of the small animal hospital, | 0:10:48 | 0:10:51
Morgan and Amblessed are about to deal with a very special patient. | 0:10:51 | 0:10:55
It's so important that you focus today, OK? | 0:10:55 | 0:10:57
There's a really, really critical case and all eyes are on us. | 0:10:57 | 0:11:02
Ingrid is a six-year-old German Shepherd cross | 0:11:02 | 0:11:05
who belongs to top vet school vet Tobias Schwarz. | 0:11:05 | 0:11:09
Sadly, Ingrid is a very poorly dog. | 0:11:09 | 0:11:12
She has cancer and she's here to get her treatment checked. | 0:11:12 | 0:11:17
What type of cancer does she have? | 0:11:17 | 0:11:19
She has a cancer of her bone marrow. | 0:11:19 | 0:11:22
It could end up in other parts of her body | 0:11:22 | 0:11:25
and that's what we want to check today. | 0:11:25 | 0:11:27
When Tobias said it was cancer, I felt really sorry for Ingrid. | 0:11:27 | 0:11:30
Ingrid's cancer is not curable, but with regular checks | 0:11:30 | 0:11:34
and treatment, they hope to keep it under control | 0:11:34 | 0:11:37
and help Ingrid live a longer, more pain-free life. | 0:11:37 | 0:11:40
So I'm going to hand over Ingrid to you, | 0:11:40 | 0:11:42
and please take good care of her. | 0:11:42 | 0:11:45
Goodbye, Ingrid. I'll see you later. | 0:11:45 | 0:11:47
This is an incredible show of trust from Tobias. | 0:11:48 | 0:11:51
He's leaving my junior vets to help prepare Ingrid for her treatment. | 0:11:51 | 0:11:55
I think it was quite a lot of pressure, | 0:11:55 | 0:11:57
because obviously, it's one of the top vets | 0:11:57 | 0:11:59
and you want to do it really well, but then you feel quite honoured | 0:11:59 | 0:12:03
because he's going to trust you enough to take care of his dog. | 0:12:03 | 0:12:07
Ingrid needs an internal scan to make sure the cancer hasn't spread. | 0:12:07 | 0:12:12
Amblessed keeps the patient calm as they head for the prep room. | 0:12:12 | 0:12:16
So what we need to do now is to clip her up for her ultrasound scan. | 0:12:16 | 0:12:20
And Morgan has some valuable advice for Amblessed. | 0:12:20 | 0:12:24
If there is a bit you can't get, go in the direction | 0:12:24 | 0:12:27
of what the fur's going and it will come off. | 0:12:27 | 0:12:30
This is great teamwork, | 0:12:30 | 0:12:31
and their confident approach is helping keep Ingrid relaxed. | 0:12:31 | 0:12:35
That's perfect. | 0:12:35 | 0:12:37
That's impressively neat and tidy clipping from Amblessed. | 0:12:37 | 0:12:40
OK. | 0:12:40 | 0:12:42 | |
Perfect. Ingrid is now ready for her scan. | 0:12:42 | 0:12:46
And later, Morgan and Amblessed give Ingrid a thorough inspection. | 0:12:48 | 0:12:52
Is the black dot in the spleen abnormal? | 0:12:52 | 0:12:55
My junior vets are completing an intensive training programme | 0:13:01 | 0:13:04
here at vet school. | 0:13:04 | 0:13:05
It's in the training zone that they'll learn essential skills | 0:13:05 | 0:13:09
that will help them with veterinary work in the real world. | 0:13:09 | 0:13:12
For impressive training zone performances, | 0:13:12 | 0:13:16
I give out vet skill credits that, | 0:13:16 | 0:13:18
along with the all-important vital vet work awards, | 0:13:18 | 0:13:21
will help me decide who will eventually be crowned head vet. | 0:13:21 | 0:13:26
Today's training zone session is all about reading radiographs | 0:13:26 | 0:13:30
or X-ray images. | 0:13:30 | 0:13:32
As Will and Sam found out with Henry the pony, | 0:13:32 | 0:13:34
X-rays allow vets to see what's going on inside an animal. | 0:13:34 | 0:13:38
For this test, | 0:13:38 | 0:13:39
I've challenged my junior vets to study a set of X-ray images. | 0:13:39 | 0:13:43
So how are we going to do this? | 0:13:46 | 0:13:48
They need to identify these three mystery animals. | 0:13:49 | 0:13:52
Any idea what this is? | 0:13:53 | 0:13:55
I know what it could be. | 0:13:55 | 0:13:57
-What? -A tortoise. | 0:13:57 | 0:13:59
Nice one, Will, it IS a tortoise. | 0:13:59 | 0:14:02
And this other reptile doesn't fool any of them. | 0:14:03 | 0:14:06
A snake. | 0:14:06 | 0:14:07
A lizard or a mouse, or I was thinking maybe a rat. | 0:14:09 | 0:14:12
I think the second... Yeah. | 0:14:12 | 0:14:13
I think that's a dog. | 0:14:15 | 0:14:17
It's not a dog, it's too small to be a dog. It could be a cat? | 0:14:17 | 0:14:20
Nope, not a cat or a dog. It's a hedgehog! | 0:14:20 | 0:14:24
Spikes don't show up on X-rays. | 0:14:24 | 0:14:26
And now I want to take them up a level. | 0:14:28 | 0:14:30
Can my junior vets spot what's wrong in these X-rays? | 0:14:30 | 0:14:33
-It's tricky. -Right, so we've got one, three and five. | 0:14:34 | 0:14:37
I have no idea. | 0:14:37 | 0:14:39
Only eagle-eyed Morgan spots the serious injury on this X-ray. | 0:14:39 | 0:14:43
I think it's a broken pelvis. | 0:14:43 | 0:14:45
Brilliant spot, Morgan! | 0:14:45 | 0:14:46
That's annoying me. | 0:14:46 | 0:14:48
But the dog with the fractured leg doesn't fool any of them. | 0:14:48 | 0:14:51
-Is that broken or dislocated? -Yeah, broken. | 0:14:51 | 0:14:54
That's been a fantastic training zone session. | 0:14:55 | 0:14:58
But who solved the most X-ray mysteries? | 0:14:58 | 0:15:01
I knew it would be hard, but I didn't think it would be that hard. | 0:15:01 | 0:15:05
Stand-out performances from Morgan and Amblessed. | 0:15:05 | 0:15:07
Their impressive detective skills gave them the highest score, | 0:15:07 | 0:15:11
so I'm awarding vet skill credits to both of them. | 0:15:11 | 0:15:13
You can see how you get on as a virtual vet in the Junior Vets game | 0:15:15 | 0:15:18
on the CBBC website. | 0:15:18 | 0:15:20
And don't forget to look for the special game code | 0:15:20 | 0:15:22
at the end of today's show. | 0:15:22 | 0:15:24
In the small animal hospital, | 0:15:33 | 0:15:35
Finbar the stray cat has a real chance of a new life, | 0:15:35 | 0:15:38
IF tests results show he does not have a highly contagious virus. | 0:15:38 | 0:15:42
Junior vets Saira and Lauren have helped to take his blood | 0:15:45 | 0:15:48
and the results of the test are nearly ready. | 0:15:48 | 0:15:50
It was quite scary and quite nerve-wracking, | 0:15:52 | 0:15:55
because I really liked Finbar and I just wanted the best for him. | 0:15:55 | 0:16:00
If two lines appear in one window of the test kit, | 0:16:00 | 0:16:03
it's bad news for Finbar | 0:16:03 | 0:16:04
-I can see one line starting to appear, can you? -Yeah. -Oh, yeah. | 0:16:04 | 0:16:07
One line is good. | 0:16:07 | 0:16:09
-As long as we don't get a second one. -We don't want any more! | 0:16:09 | 0:16:12
-Ready... -Yay! -Yes! | 0:16:14 | 0:16:17
'Just one line in each window. Brilliant - it's negative! | 0:16:17 | 0:16:20
'The testing kit confirms Finbar is a healthy cat!' | 0:16:21 | 0:16:24
Yeah, I'm very pleased that it's a negative result, because it's | 0:16:26 | 0:16:30
just a great thing to know that he's not carrying a disease or anything. | 0:16:30 | 0:16:34
And he can be re-homed and have a lovely life now. | 0:16:34 | 0:16:36
Before Finbar leaves hospital, | 0:16:40 | 0:16:42
he needs a quick operation to make sure he doesn't become a dad | 0:16:42 | 0:16:45
to unwanted kittens, and then he'll be all set for a loving new home. | 0:16:45 | 0:16:49
So first it's a jab to make him unconscious. | 0:16:49 | 0:16:52
Finbar's putting up a bit of a fight, | 0:16:52 | 0:16:54
but he's soon out for the count. | 0:16:54 | 0:16:57
Lauren monitors his heart rate and breathing. | 0:16:57 | 0:17:00
His heart rate and his respiration rate are going down a bit now, | 0:17:00 | 0:17:03
but I've been making him blink and his colour's good, as well, | 0:17:03 | 0:17:06
so he's all good. | 0:17:06 | 0:17:08
Saira helps Jane at the surgery end. | 0:17:08 | 0:17:11
How you feeling, Saira? Not woozy? | 0:17:11 | 0:17:13
-No. -No, she's a star. | 0:17:13 | 0:17:15
And the whole operation is finished in no time. | 0:17:15 | 0:17:18
I was just cleaning down and just testing to see | 0:17:18 | 0:17:22
if we'd gone through anything. | 0:17:22 | 0:17:24
But we haven't. | 0:17:24 | 0:17:25
There's only a little bit of blood, so that seems all good. | 0:17:25 | 0:17:28
Finally, the junior vets call the dog and cat home | 0:17:28 | 0:17:31
where Finbar is currently staying to update them. | 0:17:31 | 0:17:34
I was just calling to say that it was good news about Finbar. | 0:17:34 | 0:17:37
'Oh, that's excellent.' | 0:17:37 | 0:17:39
We went ahead and neutered him and he's recovering well from that. | 0:17:39 | 0:17:43
-That's wonderful! -OK, thank you, bye. -'Thanks for the update, bye.' | 0:17:43 | 0:17:46
-Well done. That was good! -There you go. | 0:17:46 | 0:17:48
Success! | 0:17:48 | 0:17:50
So just time for a goodbye and a good luck to Finbar. | 0:17:50 | 0:17:53
Bye, baby, bye, darling. | 0:17:53 | 0:17:56
I'm seeing Saira and Lauren consistently show they can be | 0:17:56 | 0:18:00
valuable members of a surgical team, but what does Jane think? | 0:18:00 | 0:18:04
They handled their patient calmly, efficiently, | 0:18:04 | 0:18:07
they weren't nervous of him and cats can pick that up, | 0:18:07 | 0:18:10
so I think they did very well in helping keep him calm, | 0:18:10 | 0:18:13
allowing the procedure to go smoothly. | 0:18:13 | 0:18:15
Over the moon because he's a really nice cat. Happy days. | 0:18:15 | 0:18:19
And it gets happier - Finbar now has a brand-new home. | 0:18:19 | 0:18:22
In the small animal hospital, | 0:18:31 | 0:18:33
much loved-pet Ingrid, the German Shepherd cross, | 0:18:33 | 0:18:36
is having her monthly check-up. | 0:18:36 | 0:18:38
Morgan and Amblessed need to see | 0:18:40 | 0:18:41
if her cancer has spread beyond her bones. | 0:18:41 | 0:18:44
-One...two...three. -There we go. | 0:18:44 | 0:18:47
When I got to know Ingrid and started working with her, | 0:18:48 | 0:18:51
it made me think I really want a dog like her. | 0:18:51 | 0:18:54
Treating Ingrid today is a big responsibility for my junior vets. | 0:18:54 | 0:18:58
Her owner is top vet Tobias Schwarz. | 0:18:58 | 0:19:01
-Hello. -Hello, Tobias. | 0:19:01 | 0:19:04
-Is she behaving? -Very. -Excellent. | 0:19:04 | 0:19:07
The team will be using ultrasound | 0:19:07 | 0:19:09
to check some of her vital organs for signs of tumours. | 0:19:09 | 0:19:13
First of all we need to put the gel on. | 0:19:13 | 0:19:16
-All over? -Yeah, and you can then rub it in a bit. | 0:19:16 | 0:19:21
They're looking for any suspicious-looking areas. | 0:19:21 | 0:19:25
Is the black dot in the spleen abnormal? | 0:19:25 | 0:19:28
I saw something quite dark on the ultrasound, which made me | 0:19:28 | 0:19:32
quite worried. If it was something bad, Tobias would be quite upset. | 0:19:32 | 0:19:37
There is something black here, isn't there? | 0:19:37 | 0:19:40
Thankfully, Tobias's years of experience tell him | 0:19:40 | 0:19:43
the black spot is a normal blood vessel. | 0:19:43 | 0:19:46
So far, I'm pleased that everything is going well | 0:19:46 | 0:19:48
and we've found nothing wrong. | 0:19:48 | 0:19:50
P1, please. | 0:19:50 | 0:19:52
Perfect. You also have to keep an eye on the hind legs. | 0:19:52 | 0:19:56
They're done. | 0:19:56 | 0:19:57
The cancer has not spread beyond Ingrid's bones - | 0:19:58 | 0:20:01
a big relief for everyone. | 0:20:01 | 0:20:03
So, Morgan, do you think everything went OK here? | 0:20:04 | 0:20:06
Yeah, I'm pleased with this, | 0:20:06 | 0:20:08
because we found nothing abnormal within the...stomach. | 0:20:08 | 0:20:13
Great work from my junior vets, and brilliant news for Ingrid. | 0:20:13 | 0:20:17
It was a relief to find that she didn't need any new treatment | 0:20:17 | 0:20:20
and there was nothing wrong with her. | 0:20:20 | 0:20:23
Working with Ingrid today has boosted my confidence with | 0:20:23 | 0:20:25
working with the animals, | 0:20:25 | 0:20:27
so if I do get an animal, I think I would be a really good pet owner. | 0:20:27 | 0:20:31
There you go. | 0:20:31 | 0:20:33
And they've really impressed top vet Tobias. | 0:20:33 | 0:20:35
Good girl. | 0:20:37 | 0:20:38
Back at the specialist horse hospital in Northumberland, | 0:20:44 | 0:20:48
Henry the pony has been prepped for surgery | 0:20:48 | 0:20:50
to try and help relieve the pain in his arthritic ankle. | 0:20:50 | 0:20:53
Sam and Will are away from vet school for the day to help out. | 0:20:53 | 0:20:56
Cedric and the team are going to drill away tissue called cartilage | 0:20:56 | 0:21:00
in Henry's ankle joint. | 0:21:00 | 0:21:01
The bones will then fuse together quicker, and when they do, | 0:21:01 | 0:21:05
the pain Henry is currently feeling will, hopefully, disappear. | 0:21:05 | 0:21:09
So I'm going to make an incision through the skin first. | 0:21:09 | 0:21:11
Give a little dab there, so you move the blood away for me. OK...lovely. | 0:21:11 | 0:21:15
OK, fine. | 0:21:15 | 0:21:16
First, vets Cedric and Sam need to put small needles into Henry's leg. | 0:21:16 | 0:21:21
These will show up on an X-ray and act as markers for the drill. | 0:21:21 | 0:21:24
Just try and keep it nice and parallel to the needle on top. | 0:21:24 | 0:21:28
Good work, Sam. | 0:21:28 | 0:21:29
OK, set up for a PD X-ray, please. | 0:21:29 | 0:21:31
This is really cool... It's, like, everything's just so...bonkers. | 0:21:33 | 0:21:37
The X-ray images show that the guide pins are in the right position, | 0:21:41 | 0:21:45
and the team now know exactly where to drill. | 0:21:45 | 0:21:48
All right, then, all ready to go? | 0:21:48 | 0:21:49
OK, I'm going to line it up - now, tell me, at the back there, Sam, | 0:21:51 | 0:21:54
does that look nice and straight? | 0:21:54 | 0:21:56
-That looks nice and parallel. -Nice and straight. Nice and parallel. | 0:21:56 | 0:21:59
-Three...two...one...go. -DRILLING | 0:21:59 | 0:22:03
We were there with the drill, drilling into a horse's leg! | 0:22:03 | 0:22:08
So that was really cool. | 0:22:08 | 0:22:10
This is precision surgery. | 0:22:12 | 0:22:14
They need to drill exactly two centimetres into Henry's leg. | 0:22:14 | 0:22:18
Will checks the depth by inserting a small surgical ruler into the hole. | 0:22:18 | 0:22:21
That's nearly one. | 0:22:21 | 0:22:23
OK, so we need to do a bit more drilling, don't we? | 0:22:23 | 0:22:25
OK, that's fine. Right, is that nice and straight? | 0:22:25 | 0:22:28
-OK. Nice and straight. -Happy? -Yep. -OK, off we go. | 0:22:28 | 0:22:31
This might look gory, | 0:22:31 | 0:22:32
but it really could help Henry walk properly again. | 0:22:32 | 0:22:35
OK, check the gauge again. | 0:22:35 | 0:22:38
I was working with loads of amazing new equipment | 0:22:38 | 0:22:40
and different, sort of, stuff that I hadn't used before. I just | 0:22:40 | 0:22:43
thought it was amazing having the opportunity to do that. | 0:22:43 | 0:22:46
Just under two centimetres. | 0:22:46 | 0:22:47
-OK, happy with that, guys? -Yep. | 0:22:47 | 0:22:50
OK, we're happy with that - stop the drip, please. | 0:22:50 | 0:22:52
They're done. | 0:22:52 | 0:22:54
Now the priority is to get Henry awake, | 0:22:54 | 0:22:56
out of surgery and into recovery. | 0:22:56 | 0:22:58
Cedric starts to stitch up the wound | 0:22:59 | 0:23:01
and asks my junior vets to finish the job. First, Sam... | 0:23:01 | 0:23:05
Push it through, that's it, perfect. That's it, you got it, there. | 0:23:07 | 0:23:11
It was a big leap forward, stitching up a horse with arthritis, | 0:23:11 | 0:23:16
and because Henry was sitting there, upside-down. | 0:23:16 | 0:23:19
It was just amazing and I felt really pleased with myself. | 0:23:19 | 0:23:23
And now Will completes Henry's stitching. | 0:23:24 | 0:23:26
Just guide it through gently and it should pop round the other side, | 0:23:26 | 0:23:29
that's lovely. | 0:23:29 | 0:23:31
The procedure is almost complete. | 0:23:31 | 0:23:33
Finally, Will and Sam help insert removable staples that will | 0:23:33 | 0:23:36
help the wound heal faster. | 0:23:36 | 0:23:38
Lovely. | 0:23:38 | 0:23:40
And then Henry's leg is carefully bandaged up. | 0:23:40 | 0:23:43
Right, let's get this pony back through to recovery, then. | 0:23:43 | 0:23:46
Almost there... | 0:23:46 | 0:23:47
OK, nice and slowly. | 0:23:47 | 0:23:49
..but they still need to move unconscious, 300-kilo Henry | 0:23:49 | 0:23:53
from the operating theatre! | 0:23:53 | 0:23:54
Drop down now. | 0:23:54 | 0:23:56
Will stays in total control. | 0:23:57 | 0:23:59
Henry's now safely positioned on the floor. | 0:24:00 | 0:24:03
The junior vets apply extra bandages for added protection | 0:24:03 | 0:24:06
and everyone clears the area. | 0:24:06 | 0:24:08
Henry's been given lots of painkillers | 0:24:12 | 0:24:14
so his leg won't be hurting. | 0:24:14 | 0:24:16
But he will be confused when he wakes and needs space to recover. | 0:24:16 | 0:24:20
The room is padded to protect him if he falls, | 0:24:20 | 0:24:22
and ropes are used to support him as he stands. | 0:24:22 | 0:24:25
Sam and Will keep a close eye on him at all times. | 0:24:25 | 0:24:28
I think he's still just a bit shaky, | 0:24:28 | 0:24:30
so we need to see how it unfolds. | 0:24:30 | 0:24:33
But it's not long before Henry finds his feet | 0:24:37 | 0:24:40
and his balance. | 0:24:40 | 0:24:42
He's made it through, thanks to the help of my brilliant junior vets! | 0:24:42 | 0:24:45
Will and Sam were involved in every single step of that | 0:24:47 | 0:24:50
incredible operation. | 0:24:50 | 0:24:52
Sam and Will did fantastically well today. | 0:24:52 | 0:24:55
Both of them really have been instrumental in getting Henry | 0:24:55 | 0:24:59
back to soundness again. | 0:24:59 | 0:25:01
-BOTH: -It was amazing. -It was so exciting. | 0:25:03 | 0:25:06
-It was really good. -Yeah, it was just so good. | 0:25:06 | 0:25:09
Awesome! | 0:25:09 | 0:25:10
But has it helped Sam make up his mind about working | 0:25:10 | 0:25:13
with humans or animals when he's older? | 0:25:13 | 0:25:15
I think in terms of my decision for a doctor or a vet | 0:25:15 | 0:25:18
it's so got to be a vet now after we done that operation. | 0:25:18 | 0:25:21
We've actually done something to help | 0:25:21 | 0:25:23
the animals, as well as having fun, which is, like, double whammy. | 0:25:23 | 0:25:27
And Henry? He's on the road to recovery | 0:25:27 | 0:25:29
and is now enjoying riding again with his relieved owner. | 0:25:29 | 0:25:33
Each of my junior vet teams faced huge | 0:25:41 | 0:25:43
and very different challenges today. | 0:25:43 | 0:25:45
Now I have to decide who has done enough to win | 0:25:48 | 0:25:51
a vital vet work award. | 0:25:51 | 0:25:52
Morgan and Amblessed made me proud when they worked hard | 0:25:53 | 0:25:57
and really focused on helping Tobias' precious pet Ingrid. | 0:25:57 | 0:26:00
Saira and Lauren dealt with Finbar's test results and his operation like | 0:26:01 | 0:26:05
fully qualified vets, and it's so obvious they love helping animals. | 0:26:05 | 0:26:09
And Will and Sam were right in the middle of the action | 0:26:11 | 0:26:14
assisting with Henry's amazing surgery. | 0:26:14 | 0:26:16
It's so difficult to separate them, | 0:26:18 | 0:26:21
and I think my decision is going to surprise at least a few of them. | 0:26:21 | 0:26:24
This has been the most difficult decision so far. | 0:26:25 | 0:26:29
Today's top junior vet is... | 0:26:29 | 0:26:32
It's all of you! | 0:26:38 | 0:26:40
Too close a call, but well done, guys. | 0:26:43 | 0:26:45
I've been blown away by the efforts of all my junior vets today, | 0:26:45 | 0:26:49
so everyone gets, and fully deserves, a vital vet work award. | 0:26:49 | 0:26:53
I think we all won because, today, all of us have worked hard. | 0:26:55 | 0:26:59
It was just a great day for all of us. | 0:26:59 | 0:27:00
It shows we're all progressing together, as well, which is nice. | 0:27:00 | 0:27:04
