Coming up on Junior Vets...

0:00:020:00:04

Homeless Finbar is tested for deadly diseases...

0:00:040:00:07

..a pony in pain needs top level surgery...

0:00:080:00:11

..and a VIP patient comes in for some high-tech treatment.

0:00:130:00:16

When pets are poorly, wildlife gets wounded or farm animals feel unwell,

0:00:210:00:25

they need top vet help.

0:00:250:00:27

The really lucky ones come here,

0:00:290:00:31

to Edinburgh University's amazing super high-tech vet school.

0:00:310:00:34

And now, six kids, chosen from 1,000,

0:00:410:00:44

have become the first ever children allowed to enrol here...

0:00:440:00:47

I'm all ready.

0:00:490:00:50

..and work alongside the school's top vets.

0:00:500:00:54

Who wants to take this cow's urine?

0:00:540:00:57

They're facing an intense training programme...

0:00:570:00:59

-Have you done that anaesthetic before?

-What's that? What's that?

0:00:590:01:03

..and are being pushed to the limit at animal hospitals,

0:01:030:01:06

vet practices, wildlife parks and working farms.

0:01:060:01:11

I'm Paul Manktelow.

0:01:110:01:12

It took me five hard years to train to be a vet,

0:01:120:01:15

but this lot have only weeks to show me what they're made of.

0:01:150:01:20

My junior vets have hardly been around animals before.

0:01:200:01:23

That's so cool.

0:01:230:01:24

Now they are facing real heavy duty vet work.

0:01:240:01:27

It's, like, everything's just so bonkers.

0:01:280:01:31

-That is amazing.

-That's cool.

0:01:340:01:36

Have they got the stomach to succeed?

0:01:360:01:38

I feel like a real vet.

0:01:380:01:40

And can they stay calm under extreme pressure?

0:01:400:01:43

Six raw recruits...

0:01:460:01:48

..but...I can only choose...

0:01:510:01:54

one winner.

0:01:540:01:56

The first ever junior vet to win the prestigious head vet title...

0:01:560:02:02

..is...

0:02:020:02:03

It's day five... and we're nearly half-way

0:02:130:02:17

to finding out who will be named my head vet.

0:02:170:02:20

My junior vets have come a long way already,

0:02:200:02:23

but they're just about to find out how tough vet work can get.

0:02:230:02:27

Junior vets, welcome back to vet school,

0:02:270:02:29

are you enjoying the experience?

0:02:290:02:31

-ALL: Yeah.

-OK, today's teams are...

0:02:310:02:34

..Morgan and Amblessed... Sam and Will...Lauren and Saira.

0:02:350:02:40

Let's get down to business.

0:02:400:02:42

Today, some of them will be working with the top vets here at vet school

0:02:420:02:45

and one team is going out to a specialist horse hospital.

0:02:450:02:49

They'll all be dealing with real animals that need their help.

0:02:490:02:54

I'll be keeping a close eye on them all day.

0:02:540:02:56

Only those who really impress me will be in with a chance of winning

0:02:560:02:59

a vital vet work award,

0:02:590:03:01

and moving one step closer to being named head vet.

0:03:010:03:05

Pack leader so far is Saira.

0:03:050:03:08

She came to vet school really scared of big dogs,

0:03:080:03:11

but she's conquered her fears...

0:03:110:03:12

Hello.

0:03:120:03:14

..and she's now thinking like a vet

0:03:140:03:16

and handling her patients and their owners brilliantly.

0:03:160:03:19

I'm one of the junior vets today. It's good news.

0:03:190:03:22

But she needs to watch out for Will.

0:03:220:03:24

He's flying and fancies his chances of taking the top title.

0:03:240:03:28

With three operations under his belt, he's building up some serious

0:03:280:03:32

surgical experience.

0:03:320:03:33

-Another clamp. Same style clamp again.

-This one?

-That will be fine.

0:03:330:03:36

And he's keen to take on bigger challenges.

0:03:360:03:39

Awesome!

0:03:390:03:40

But how will he perform when he eventually gets his wish?

0:03:400:03:43

Let's find out.

0:03:430:03:45

At the horse hospital in Northumberland,

0:03:520:03:54

ten-year-old pony, Henry, faces a critical day.

0:03:540:03:57

He's normally a prize-winning show pony, but today he's a non-runner.

0:03:590:04:04

Poor Henry has a painfully swollen ankle and he needs urgent help.

0:04:040:04:07

Thankfully Henry's got a top team on his side.

0:04:100:04:13

International super vet Cedric Chan travels the world healing horses

0:04:130:04:17

and today, Will and Sam have left vet school to help him.

0:04:170:04:20

Cedric is a really cool guy,

0:04:200:04:22

because he's sort of flying around the world.

0:04:220:04:24

He'd just come back from France and I think he was going to Singapore.

0:04:240:04:27

Yeah, he's amazing that guy.

0:04:270:04:30

This is Henry. He's our patient for today.

0:04:300:04:33

We know he's got a problem in his left hind leg and an arthritic

0:04:330:04:36

problem in his ankle joint, they call it the "hock" in horses.

0:04:360:04:39

What we're going to do today is an operation to try

0:04:390:04:41

and get that arthritis better.

0:04:410:04:43

Arthritis is a nasty condition that results in sore

0:04:450:04:48

and swollen bone joints.

0:04:480:04:50

In extreme cases, it can be incredibly painful.

0:04:500:04:53

This is the X-ray of Henry's ankle.

0:04:530:04:57

Now, can you see that black line running across here?

0:04:570:05:00

Normally, that should be a beautiful, clear black line, but can you see

0:05:000:05:03

-there are bits that have been lost there across that line?

-Yeah.

0:05:030:05:06

Cedric and his team are going to drill away tissue called cartilage

0:05:080:05:12

in Henry's ankle joint.

0:05:120:05:14

It may sound strange, but when the bones fuse together,

0:05:140:05:17

the pain Henry is currently feeling will hopefully disappear.

0:05:170:05:21

It's extreme surgery that no other junior vet has faced before.

0:05:230:05:27

Go on, Henry.

0:05:270:05:28

Will and Sam are leading Henry to the biggest operation of his life.

0:05:280:05:32

And as Henry is anaesthetised, his legs will give way,

0:05:350:05:38

so they must ensure he doesn't hurt himself as he falls.

0:05:380:05:41

First, Henry's feet and legs are covered in sterile drapes

0:05:480:05:51

to protect him from germs during surgery.

0:05:510:05:53

Then a tube is put into his windpipe that pumps a gas into his lungs.

0:05:560:06:00

This will help him breathe and keep him unconscious for the entire op.

0:06:000:06:04

Now Henry is asleep, the junior vets need to quickly get him

0:06:040:06:07

onto a huge horse-sized operating table,

0:06:070:06:09

and with Henry weighing in at a whopping 300 kilos,

0:06:090:06:12

they need specialised lifting kit to get him there.

0:06:120:06:15

When I saw Henry upside-down and moving along the room, it was

0:06:150:06:19

really weird, and the fact that I was in charge of putting him

0:06:190:06:24

safely down on the operating table, as well...

0:06:240:06:26

And then Will makes sure he's nice and secure.

0:06:270:06:30

With Henry in position for the op, Will and Sam must make sure

0:06:350:06:39

they're fully scrubbed and gowned for surgery.

0:06:390:06:41

Any germs or dirt could be really dangerous.

0:06:410:06:44

That's good, just drop it down. That will do perfect.

0:06:480:06:50

If today's operation is successful,

0:06:500:06:52

it will save Henry from years of pain.

0:06:520:06:55

I'm pleased to see Will is really starting to think like a vet now.

0:06:560:07:00

Where will the holes be going?

0:07:000:07:01

You feel the bump on the inside of the ankle, the hock, there,

0:07:010:07:04

that's approximately where we're going to drill.

0:07:040:07:06

And will this operation guarantee to actually fix all of these problems?

0:07:060:07:12

It's never a 100% guarantee, but we normally give the owner

0:07:120:07:16

a prognosis of about 70 to 80% for this procedure.

0:07:160:07:19

Right then, we're ready to go.

0:07:190:07:22

Cedric's ready...but are Sam and Will ready to help him help Henry?

0:07:220:07:26

I'm really excited about what I'm about to do, because it's

0:07:260:07:29

really different. I've never done anything like it before.

0:07:290:07:31

It makes me feel like a real vet.

0:07:310:07:34

Later, the junior vets are primed for action

0:07:340:07:37

in case Henry needs their help.

0:07:370:07:39

I think he's just a bit still shaky, so we'll just see how it unfolds.

0:07:390:07:44

On his way to vet school from a local dog and cat home

0:07:480:07:51

is stray cat Finbar.

0:07:510:07:53

And waiting to receive him at the small animal hospital

0:07:530:07:56

are junior vets Lauren and Saira.

0:07:560:07:58

There's our cat.

0:07:580:08:00

Homeless Finbar faces two critical tests today.

0:08:010:08:05

-Hello.

-You can take Finbar, then.

0:08:050:08:07

We needed to make sure he didn't have any diseases

0:08:070:08:12

that could be transferred to any other animals.

0:08:120:08:16

If the results are good, he could be up for re-homing.

0:08:160:08:19

But if it's bad news Finbar will spend the rest of his life

0:08:190:08:22

living indoors.

0:08:220:08:24

Today, Saira and Lauren will be assisting vet Jane Brown.

0:08:240:08:27

Hello, there.

0:08:270:08:29

Hello.

0:08:290:08:30

Hello, Finbar.

0:08:300:08:32

Their first job is to relax Finbar for an external examination.

0:08:320:08:36

Yes, he's enjoying that, isn't he?

0:08:360:08:38

He looks OK,

0:08:380:08:39

but the team now need to test him for two contagious diseases

0:08:390:08:43

called feline immunodeficiency virus and feline leukaemia virus.

0:08:430:08:48

Both are harmless to humans but can be deadly to cats.

0:08:480:08:51

If he has either, it will be very difficult to find him a new home.

0:08:510:08:55

Finbar's a really lovely cat, he's nice and playful.

0:08:550:08:58

He's just really nice. I really love him.

0:08:580:09:01

-He likes you!

-Tell you what, I'm keeping you.

0:09:010:09:05

He's cute and gentle now, but Finbar arrived with a feisty reputation.

0:09:050:09:09

Stray cats often have to scrap to survive,

0:09:090:09:12

and serious diseases are passed on by bites and scratches.

0:09:120:09:16

Now, have you noticed on Finbar's face what he's got over his nose?

0:09:160:09:19

He's got a scratch on his nose.

0:09:190:09:21

Yeah, he's a stray and he's a big lad

0:09:210:09:23

and he's been out defending his territory.

0:09:230:09:26

A blood sample is taken...

0:09:260:09:28

That's a good boy.

0:09:280:09:29

..then Saira carefully transfers the blood from the syringe

0:09:290:09:32

to a sample tube so it can be tested.

0:09:320:09:35

Perfect, OK. That will be fine.

0:09:350:09:37

These results really will be life changing for Finbar.

0:09:370:09:40

I need to have an important chat with my junior vets.

0:09:400:09:43

Both of these viruses are highly contiguous,

0:09:430:09:46

and if Finbar has got these diseases he wouldn't get a new home.

0:09:460:09:50

It would be really difficult to re-home him.

0:09:500:09:52

-Is there any cure to it, or...?

-No.

0:09:520:09:55

If the tests came back positive for Finbar,

0:09:580:10:01

it wouldn't have been a very nice life for him,

0:10:010:10:04

he wouldn't have been allowed outside.

0:10:040:10:06

I think because Finbar was a stray cat,

0:10:060:10:08

I knew that he had a higher chance of having these viruses.

0:10:080:10:13

First, some of Finbar's blood is mixed with a special chemical.

0:10:140:10:17

You just need one drop in each one.

0:10:170:10:20

It will take ten minutes for the chemical to react with

0:10:200:10:23

the blood and produce a final result.

0:10:230:10:25

So, one line means he's in the clear, and two lines is bad news.

0:10:250:10:31

So fingers crossed...

0:10:330:10:34

And later, Saira and Lauren discover Finbar's fate.

0:10:360:10:39

-I can see one line starting to appear, can you?

-Yeah.

-Oh, yeah.

0:10:390:10:42

-As long as we don't get a second one.

-We don't want any more.

0:10:420:10:45

In another part of the small animal hospital,

0:10:480:10:51

Morgan and Amblessed are about to deal with a very special patient.

0:10:510:10:55

It's so important that you focus today, OK?

0:10:550:10:57

There's a really, really critical case and all eyes are on us.

0:10:570:11:02

Ingrid is a six-year-old German Shepherd cross

0:11:020:11:05

who belongs to top vet school vet Tobias Schwarz.

0:11:050:11:09

Sadly, Ingrid is a very poorly dog.

0:11:090:11:12

She has cancer and she's here to get her treatment checked.

0:11:120:11:17

What type of cancer does she have?

0:11:170:11:19

She has a cancer of her bone marrow.

0:11:190:11:22

It could end up in other parts of her body

0:11:220:11:25

and that's what we want to check today.

0:11:250:11:27

When Tobias said it was cancer, I felt really sorry for Ingrid.

0:11:270:11:30

Ingrid's cancer is not curable, but with regular checks

0:11:300:11:34

and treatment, they hope to keep it under control

0:11:340:11:37

and help Ingrid live a longer, more pain-free life.

0:11:370:11:40

So I'm going to hand over Ingrid to you,

0:11:400:11:42

and please take good care of her.

0:11:420:11:45

Goodbye, Ingrid. I'll see you later.

0:11:450:11:47

This is an incredible show of trust from Tobias.

0:11:480:11:51

He's leaving my junior vets to help prepare Ingrid for her treatment.

0:11:510:11:55

I think it was quite a lot of pressure,

0:11:550:11:57

because obviously, it's one of the top vets

0:11:570:11:59

and you want to do it really well, but then you feel quite honoured

0:11:590:12:03

because he's going to trust you enough to take care of his dog.

0:12:030:12:07

Ingrid needs an internal scan to make sure the cancer hasn't spread.

0:12:070:12:12

Amblessed keeps the patient calm as they head for the prep room.

0:12:120:12:16

So what we need to do now is to clip her up for her ultrasound scan.

0:12:160:12:20

And Morgan has some valuable advice for Amblessed.

0:12:200:12:24

If there is a bit you can't get, go in the direction

0:12:240:12:27

of what the fur's going and it will come off.

0:12:270:12:30

This is great teamwork,

0:12:300:12:31

and their confident approach is helping keep Ingrid relaxed.

0:12:310:12:35

That's perfect.

0:12:350:12:37

That's impressively neat and tidy clipping from Amblessed.

0:12:370:12:40

OK.

0:12:400:12:42

Perfect. Ingrid is now ready for her scan.

0:12:420:12:46

And later, Morgan and Amblessed give Ingrid a thorough inspection.

0:12:480:12:52

Is the black dot in the spleen abnormal?

0:12:520:12:55

My junior vets are completing an intensive training programme

0:13:010:13:04

here at vet school.

0:13:040:13:05

It's in the training zone that they'll learn essential skills

0:13:050:13:09

that will help them with veterinary work in the real world.

0:13:090:13:12

For impressive training zone performances,

0:13:120:13:16

I give out vet skill credits that,

0:13:160:13:18

along with the all-important vital vet work awards,

0:13:180:13:21

will help me decide who will eventually be crowned head vet.

0:13:210:13:26

Today's training zone session is all about reading radiographs

0:13:260:13:30

or X-ray images.

0:13:300:13:32

As Will and Sam found out with Henry the pony,

0:13:320:13:34

X-rays allow vets to see what's going on inside an animal.

0:13:340:13:38

For this test,

0:13:380:13:39

I've challenged my junior vets to study a set of X-ray images.

0:13:390:13:43

So how are we going to do this?

0:13:460:13:48

They need to identify these three mystery animals.

0:13:490:13:52

Any idea what this is?

0:13:530:13:55

I know what it could be.

0:13:550:13:57

-What?

-A tortoise.

0:13:570:13:59

Nice one, Will, it IS a tortoise.

0:13:590:14:02

And this other reptile doesn't fool any of them.

0:14:030:14:06

A snake.

0:14:060:14:07

A lizard or a mouse, or I was thinking maybe a rat.

0:14:090:14:12

I think the second... Yeah.

0:14:120:14:13

I think that's a dog.

0:14:150:14:17

It's not a dog, it's too small to be a dog. It could be a cat?

0:14:170:14:20

Nope, not a cat or a dog. It's a hedgehog!

0:14:200:14:24

Spikes don't show up on X-rays.

0:14:240:14:26

And now I want to take them up a level.

0:14:280:14:30

Can my junior vets spot what's wrong in these X-rays?

0:14:300:14:33

-It's tricky.

-Right, so we've got one, three and five.

0:14:340:14:37

I have no idea.

0:14:370:14:39

Only eagle-eyed Morgan spots the serious injury on this X-ray.

0:14:390:14:43

I think it's a broken pelvis.

0:14:430:14:45

Brilliant spot, Morgan!

0:14:450:14:46

That's annoying me.

0:14:460:14:48

But the dog with the fractured leg doesn't fool any of them.

0:14:480:14:51

-Is that broken or dislocated?

-Yeah, broken.

0:14:510:14:54

That's been a fantastic training zone session.

0:14:550:14:58

But who solved the most X-ray mysteries?

0:14:580:15:01

I knew it would be hard, but I didn't think it would be that hard.

0:15:010:15:05

Stand-out performances from Morgan and Amblessed.

0:15:050:15:07

Their impressive detective skills gave them the highest score,

0:15:070:15:11

so I'm awarding vet skill credits to both of them.

0:15:110:15:13

You can see how you get on as a virtual vet in the Junior Vets game

0:15:150:15:18

on the CBBC website.

0:15:180:15:20

And don't forget to look for the special game code

0:15:200:15:22

at the end of today's show.

0:15:220:15:24

In the small animal hospital,

0:15:330:15:35

Finbar the stray cat has a real chance of a new life,

0:15:350:15:38

IF tests results show he does not have a highly contagious virus.

0:15:380:15:42

Junior vets Saira and Lauren have helped to take his blood

0:15:450:15:48

and the results of the test are nearly ready.

0:15:480:15:50

It was quite scary and quite nerve-wracking,

0:15:520:15:55

because I really liked Finbar and I just wanted the best for him.

0:15:550:16:00

If two lines appear in one window of the test kit,

0:16:000:16:03

it's bad news for Finbar

0:16:030:16:04

-I can see one line starting to appear, can you?

-Yeah.

-Oh, yeah.

0:16:040:16:07

One line is good.

0:16:070:16:09

-As long as we don't get a second one.

-We don't want any more!

0:16:090:16:12

-Ready...

-Yay!

-Yes!

0:16:140:16:17

'Just one line in each window. Brilliant - it's negative!

0:16:170:16:20

'The testing kit confirms Finbar is a healthy cat!'

0:16:210:16:24

Yeah, I'm very pleased that it's a negative result, because it's

0:16:260:16:30

just a great thing to know that he's not carrying a disease or anything.

0:16:300:16:34

And he can be re-homed and have a lovely life now.

0:16:340:16:36

Before Finbar leaves hospital,

0:16:400:16:42

he needs a quick operation to make sure he doesn't become a dad

0:16:420:16:45

to unwanted kittens, and then he'll be all set for a loving new home.

0:16:450:16:49

So first it's a jab to make him unconscious.

0:16:490:16:52

Finbar's putting up a bit of a fight,

0:16:520:16:54

but he's soon out for the count.

0:16:540:16:57

Lauren monitors his heart rate and breathing.

0:16:570:17:00

His heart rate and his respiration rate are going down a bit now,

0:17:000:17:03

but I've been making him blink and his colour's good, as well,

0:17:030:17:06

so he's all good.

0:17:060:17:08

Saira helps Jane at the surgery end.

0:17:080:17:11

How you feeling, Saira? Not woozy?

0:17:110:17:13

-No.

-No, she's a star.

0:17:130:17:15

And the whole operation is finished in no time.

0:17:150:17:18

I was just cleaning down and just testing to see

0:17:180:17:22

if we'd gone through anything.

0:17:220:17:24

But we haven't.

0:17:240:17:25

There's only a little bit of blood, so that seems all good.

0:17:250:17:28

Finally, the junior vets call the dog and cat home

0:17:280:17:31

where Finbar is currently staying to update them.

0:17:310:17:34

I was just calling to say that it was good news about Finbar.

0:17:340:17:37

'Oh, that's excellent.'

0:17:370:17:39

We went ahead and neutered him and he's recovering well from that.

0:17:390:17:43

-That's wonderful!

-OK, thank you, bye.

-'Thanks for the update, bye.'

0:17:430:17:46

-Well done. That was good!

-There you go.

0:17:460:17:48

Success!

0:17:480:17:50

So just time for a goodbye and a good luck to Finbar.

0:17:500:17:53

Bye, baby, bye, darling.

0:17:530:17:56

I'm seeing Saira and Lauren consistently show they can be

0:17:560:18:00

valuable members of a surgical team, but what does Jane think?

0:18:000:18:04

They handled their patient calmly, efficiently,

0:18:040:18:07

they weren't nervous of him and cats can pick that up,

0:18:070:18:10

so I think they did very well in helping keep him calm,

0:18:100:18:13

allowing the procedure to go smoothly.

0:18:130:18:15

Over the moon because he's a really nice cat. Happy days.

0:18:150:18:19

And it gets happier - Finbar now has a brand-new home.

0:18:190:18:22

In the small animal hospital,

0:18:310:18:33

much loved-pet Ingrid, the German Shepherd cross,

0:18:330:18:36

is having her monthly check-up.

0:18:360:18:38

Morgan and Amblessed need to see

0:18:400:18:41

if her cancer has spread beyond her bones.

0:18:410:18:44

-One...two...three.

-There we go.

0:18:440:18:47

When I got to know Ingrid and started working with her,

0:18:480:18:51

it made me think I really want a dog like her.

0:18:510:18:54

Treating Ingrid today is a big responsibility for my junior vets.

0:18:540:18:58

Her owner is top vet Tobias Schwarz.

0:18:580:19:01

-Hello.

-Hello, Tobias.

0:19:010:19:04

-Is she behaving?

-Very.

-Excellent.

0:19:040:19:07

The team will be using ultrasound

0:19:070:19:09

to check some of her vital organs for signs of tumours.

0:19:090:19:13

First of all we need to put the gel on.

0:19:130:19:16

-All over?

-Yeah, and you can then rub it in a bit.

0:19:160:19:21

They're looking for any suspicious-looking areas.

0:19:210:19:25

Is the black dot in the spleen abnormal?

0:19:250:19:28

I saw something quite dark on the ultrasound, which made me

0:19:280:19:32

quite worried. If it was something bad, Tobias would be quite upset.

0:19:320:19:37

There is something black here, isn't there?

0:19:370:19:40

Thankfully, Tobias's years of experience tell him

0:19:400:19:43

the black spot is a normal blood vessel.

0:19:430:19:46

So far, I'm pleased that everything is going well

0:19:460:19:48

and we've found nothing wrong.

0:19:480:19:50

P1, please.

0:19:500:19:52

Perfect. You also have to keep an eye on the hind legs.

0:19:520:19:56

They're done.

0:19:560:19:57

The cancer has not spread beyond Ingrid's bones -

0:19:580:20:01

a big relief for everyone.

0:20:010:20:03

So, Morgan, do you think everything went OK here?

0:20:040:20:06

Yeah, I'm pleased with this,

0:20:060:20:08

because we found nothing abnormal within the...stomach.

0:20:080:20:13

Great work from my junior vets, and brilliant news for Ingrid.

0:20:130:20:17

It was a relief to find that she didn't need any new treatment

0:20:170:20:20

and there was nothing wrong with her.

0:20:200:20:23

Working with Ingrid today has boosted my confidence with

0:20:230:20:25

working with the animals,

0:20:250:20:27

so if I do get an animal, I think I would be a really good pet owner.

0:20:270:20:31

There you go.

0:20:310:20:33

And they've really impressed top vet Tobias.

0:20:330:20:35

Good girl.

0:20:370:20:38

Back at the specialist horse hospital in Northumberland,

0:20:440:20:48

Henry the pony has been prepped for surgery

0:20:480:20:50

to try and help relieve the pain in his arthritic ankle.

0:20:500:20:53

Sam and Will are away from vet school for the day to help out.

0:20:530:20:56

Cedric and the team are going to drill away tissue called cartilage

0:20:560:21:00

in Henry's ankle joint.

0:21:000:21:01

The bones will then fuse together quicker, and when they do,

0:21:010:21:05

the pain Henry is currently feeling will, hopefully, disappear.

0:21:050:21:09

So I'm going to make an incision through the skin first.

0:21:090:21:11

Give a little dab there, so you move the blood away for me. OK...lovely.

0:21:110:21:15

OK, fine.

0:21:150:21:16

First, vets Cedric and Sam need to put small needles into Henry's leg.

0:21:160:21:21

These will show up on an X-ray and act as markers for the drill.

0:21:210:21:24

Just try and keep it nice and parallel to the needle on top.

0:21:240:21:28

Good work, Sam.

0:21:280:21:29

OK, set up for a PD X-ray, please.

0:21:290:21:31

This is really cool... It's, like, everything's just so...bonkers.

0:21:330:21:37

The X-ray images show that the guide pins are in the right position,

0:21:410:21:45

and the team now know exactly where to drill.

0:21:450:21:48

All right, then, all ready to go?

0:21:480:21:49

OK, I'm going to line it up - now, tell me, at the back there, Sam,

0:21:510:21:54

does that look nice and straight?

0:21:540:21:56

-That looks nice and parallel.

-Nice and straight. Nice and parallel.

0:21:560:21:59

-Three...two...one...go.

-DRILLING

0:21:590:22:03

We were there with the drill, drilling into a horse's leg!

0:22:030:22:08

So that was really cool.

0:22:080:22:10

This is precision surgery.

0:22:120:22:14

They need to drill exactly two centimetres into Henry's leg.

0:22:140:22:18

Will checks the depth by inserting a small surgical ruler into the hole.

0:22:180:22:21

That's nearly one.

0:22:210:22:23

OK, so we need to do a bit more drilling, don't we?

0:22:230:22:25

OK, that's fine. Right, is that nice and straight?

0:22:250:22:28

-OK. Nice and straight.

-Happy?

-Yep.

-OK, off we go.

0:22:280:22:31

This might look gory,

0:22:310:22:32

but it really could help Henry walk properly again.

0:22:320:22:35

OK, check the gauge again.

0:22:350:22:38

I was working with loads of amazing new equipment

0:22:380:22:40

and different, sort of, stuff that I hadn't used before. I just

0:22:400:22:43

thought it was amazing having the opportunity to do that.

0:22:430:22:46

Just under two centimetres.

0:22:460:22:47

-OK, happy with that, guys?

-Yep.

0:22:470:22:50

OK, we're happy with that - stop the drip, please.

0:22:500:22:52

They're done.

0:22:520:22:54

Now the priority is to get Henry awake,

0:22:540:22:56

out of surgery and into recovery.

0:22:560:22:58

Cedric starts to stitch up the wound

0:22:590:23:01

and asks my junior vets to finish the job. First, Sam...

0:23:010:23:05

Push it through, that's it, perfect. That's it, you got it, there.

0:23:070:23:11

It was a big leap forward, stitching up a horse with arthritis,

0:23:110:23:16

and because Henry was sitting there, upside-down.

0:23:160:23:19

It was just amazing and I felt really pleased with myself.

0:23:190:23:23

And now Will completes Henry's stitching.

0:23:240:23:26

Just guide it through gently and it should pop round the other side,

0:23:260:23:29

that's lovely.

0:23:290:23:31

The procedure is almost complete.

0:23:310:23:33

Finally, Will and Sam help insert removable staples that will

0:23:330:23:36

help the wound heal faster.

0:23:360:23:38

Lovely.

0:23:380:23:40

And then Henry's leg is carefully bandaged up.

0:23:400:23:43

Right, let's get this pony back through to recovery, then.

0:23:430:23:46

Almost there...

0:23:460:23:47

OK, nice and slowly.

0:23:470:23:49

..but they still need to move unconscious, 300-kilo Henry

0:23:490:23:53

from the operating theatre!

0:23:530:23:54

Drop down now.

0:23:540:23:56

Will stays in total control.

0:23:570:23:59

Henry's now safely positioned on the floor.

0:24:000:24:03

The junior vets apply extra bandages for added protection

0:24:030:24:06

and everyone clears the area.

0:24:060:24:08

Henry's been given lots of painkillers

0:24:120:24:14

so his leg won't be hurting.

0:24:140:24:16

But he will be confused when he wakes and needs space to recover.

0:24:160:24:20

The room is padded to protect him if he falls,

0:24:200:24:22

and ropes are used to support him as he stands.

0:24:220:24:25

Sam and Will keep a close eye on him at all times.

0:24:250:24:28

I think he's still just a bit shaky,

0:24:280:24:30

so we need to see how it unfolds.

0:24:300:24:33

But it's not long before Henry finds his feet

0:24:370:24:40

and his balance.

0:24:400:24:42

He's made it through, thanks to the help of my brilliant junior vets!

0:24:420:24:45

Will and Sam were involved in every single step of that

0:24:470:24:50

incredible operation.

0:24:500:24:52

Sam and Will did fantastically well today.

0:24:520:24:55

Both of them really have been instrumental in getting Henry

0:24:550:24:59

back to soundness again.

0:24:590:25:01

-BOTH:

-It was amazing.

-It was so exciting.

0:25:030:25:06

-It was really good.

-Yeah, it was just so good.

0:25:060:25:09

Awesome!

0:25:090:25:10

But has it helped Sam make up his mind about working

0:25:100:25:13

with humans or animals when he's older?

0:25:130:25:15

I think in terms of my decision for a doctor or a vet

0:25:150:25:18

it's so got to be a vet now after we done that operation.

0:25:180:25:21

We've actually done something to help

0:25:210:25:23

the animals, as well as having fun, which is, like, double whammy.

0:25:230:25:27

And Henry? He's on the road to recovery

0:25:270:25:29

and is now enjoying riding again with his relieved owner.

0:25:290:25:33

Each of my junior vet teams faced huge

0:25:410:25:43

and very different challenges today.

0:25:430:25:45

Now I have to decide who has done enough to win

0:25:480:25:51

a vital vet work award.

0:25:510:25:52

Morgan and Amblessed made me proud when they worked hard

0:25:530:25:57

and really focused on helping Tobias' precious pet Ingrid.

0:25:570:26:00

Saira and Lauren dealt with Finbar's test results and his operation like

0:26:010:26:05

fully qualified vets, and it's so obvious they love helping animals.

0:26:050:26:09

And Will and Sam were right in the middle of the action

0:26:110:26:14

assisting with Henry's amazing surgery.

0:26:140:26:16

It's so difficult to separate them,

0:26:180:26:21

and I think my decision is going to surprise at least a few of them.

0:26:210:26:24

This has been the most difficult decision so far.

0:26:250:26:29

Today's top junior vet is...

0:26:290:26:32

It's all of you!

0:26:380:26:40

Too close a call, but well done, guys.

0:26:430:26:45

I've been blown away by the efforts of all my junior vets today,

0:26:450:26:49

so everyone gets, and fully deserves, a vital vet work award.

0:26:490:26:53

I think we all won because, today, all of us have worked hard.

0:26:550:26:59

It was just a great day for all of us.

0:26:590:27:00

It shows we're all progressing together, as well, which is nice.

0:27:000:27:04

It's not just one person that's helping everybody else,

0:27:040:27:06

we're all sort of growing together, which is really good.

0:27:060:27:10

Think you can cut it as a top vet and make animals better?

0:27:120:27:16

Head over to the CBBC website now and use today's game code,

0:27:160:27:19

GOLD008, to unlock a special case in your very own waiting room.

0:27:190:27:26

Next time on Junior Vets...

0:27:290:27:31

Manfrieda the stray tortoise needs vital surgery.

0:27:310:27:34

Penguins and snakes are on the treatment list at the zoo.

0:27:340:27:38

And my junior vets go it alone

0:27:380:27:41

as they work with poorly Casper the boxer.
