Coming up on Junior Vets... | 0:00:02 | 0:00:04
There's a double emergency at vet school... | 0:00:04 | 0:00:06
Go, go, go. | 0:00:06 | 0:00:08
..as alarm bells ring in the middle of surgery. | 0:00:08 | 0:00:11
And junior vets get to grips with a sick cow. | 0:00:12 | 0:00:15
When pets are poorly, wildlife gets wounded or farm animals feel unwell, | 0:00:21 | 0:00:25
they need top vet help. | 0:00:25 | 0:00:27
The really lucky ones come here, | 0:00:29 | 0:00:30
to Edinburgh University's amazing super high-tech vet school. | 0:00:30 | 0:00:34
And now, six kids chosen from 1,000 | 0:00:41 | 0:00:44
have become the first ever children allowed to enrol here... | 0:00:44 | 0:00:47
All ready. | 0:00:49 | 0:00:50
..and work alongside the school's top vets. | 0:00:50 | 0:00:53
Who wants to take this cow's urine? | 0:00:53 | 0:00:56
They're facing an intense training programme... | 0:00:57 | 0:01:00
-Have you done anaesthetic before? -What is this? What's that? | 0:01:00 | 0:01:02
..and are being pushed to the limit at animal hospitals, | 0:01:02 | 0:01:06
vet practices, wildlife parks and working farms. | 0:01:06 | 0:01:10
I'm Paul Manktelow. | 0:01:10 | 0:01:12
And it took me five hard years to train to be a vet | 0:01:12 | 0:01:15
but this lot have only weeks to show me what they're made of. | 0:01:15 | 0:01:19
My junior vets have hardly been around animals before. | 0:01:19 | 0:01:23
That's so cool. | 0:01:23 | 0:01:24
Now they're facing real heavy-duty vet work. | 0:01:24 | 0:01:28
It's like everything's just so bonkers. | 0:01:28 | 0:01:31
-That is amazing. -That's cool. | 0:01:34 | 0:01:36
Have they got the stomach to succeed? | 0:01:36 | 0:01:38
I feel like a real vet. | 0:01:38 | 0:01:40
And can they stay calm under extreme pressure? | 0:01:40 | 0:01:43
Six raw recruits... | 0:01:46 | 0:01:48
But I can only choose | 0:01:51 | 0:01:54
one winner. | 0:01:54 | 0:01:56
The first ever junior vet to win the prestigious head vet title...is... | 0:01:56 | 0:02:03
It's day eight and my junior vets are notching up some | 0:02:13 | 0:02:17
awesome veterinary experiences. | 0:02:17 | 0:02:20
Junior vets, welcome back to vet school. Today's working pairs are... | 0:02:22 | 0:02:26
..Morgan And Will. Lauren and Sam. Amblessed and Saira. | 0:02:28 | 0:02:33
Let's get down to business. | 0:02:33 | 0:02:34
Business is full-on real world vet work. | 0:02:36 | 0:02:39
And real animal emergencies are the order of the day today | 0:02:39 | 0:02:42
for my junior vets. | 0:02:42 | 0:02:43
I'll be keeping tabs on everything they do. | 0:02:46 | 0:02:48
Only those who really stand out will be in with a chance of winning | 0:02:48 | 0:02:51
one of my vital vet work awards. | 0:02:51 | 0:02:54
The competition for my head vet title is now opening up. | 0:02:54 | 0:02:57
Lauren, Saira and Will have each won an impressive four | 0:02:59 | 0:03:02
vital vet work awards. | 0:03:02 | 0:03:04
They're closely followed by Sam and Morgan who have three awards each. | 0:03:04 | 0:03:08
And while Amblessed only got two... | 0:03:08 | 0:03:10
..she's won four vet skills credits, | 0:03:12 | 0:03:15
more than any other junior vet. | 0:03:15 | 0:03:17
Now she needs to turn her star performances in the training zone | 0:03:17 | 0:03:21
into top-level vet work in the real world. | 0:03:21 | 0:03:23
That's perfect. | 0:03:23 | 0:03:25
She consistently proves she can pick things up fast and | 0:03:25 | 0:03:28
is technically skilful. | 0:03:28 | 0:03:29
But can she handle the unpredictable nature of veterinary life? | 0:03:29 | 0:03:32
If Sam wants to fulfil his dream of becoming a vet, | 0:03:34 | 0:03:37
he needs to prove to me that he can be more confident around animals. | 0:03:37 | 0:03:41
It's good experience but it's just really scary. | 0:03:41 | 0:03:44
He's right up there with the leaders. | 0:03:44 | 0:03:47
Now I want to see whether he can handle the unusual | 0:03:47 | 0:03:49
and the unexpected. | 0:03:49 | 0:03:51
Not only does vet school have it's own animal hospitals | 0:03:59 | 0:04:02
and vet practices, it also has it's very own working dairy farm, | 0:04:02 | 0:04:06
which is home to over 400 cows. | 0:04:06 | 0:04:09
Today, junior vets Sam and Lauren have a busy shift ahead of them | 0:04:12 | 0:04:15
as they join up with farm vet Isabelle who needs to make sure | 0:04:15 | 0:04:18
her cows are healthy. | 0:04:18 | 0:04:20
The plan for today is that we'll go into the parlour and we'll | 0:04:20 | 0:04:23
help the dairy men and the process of preparing the cows for milking. | 0:04:23 | 0:04:28
I'm a vegetarian and I don't particularly like the idea | 0:04:28 | 0:04:32
of animals being made to produce things for us. | 0:04:32 | 0:04:36
So I felt quite worried and wary about going to a dairy farm. | 0:04:36 | 0:04:41
Opinions aside, Lauren's right to be wary, working with any | 0:04:41 | 0:04:45
farm animal can be hazardous. | 0:04:45 | 0:04:47
They're clearly very large animals and they're not necessarily | 0:04:47 | 0:04:50
aggressive, but they could be potentially dangerous. | 0:04:50 | 0:04:53
So be aware as to where you stand. | 0:04:53 | 0:04:56
Make sure that you don't get knocked over or you're | 0:04:58 | 0:05:00
not in a position where you get kicked by a cow. | 0:05:00 | 0:05:03
Cows are very big, | 0:05:03 | 0:05:06
much bigger than I thought they were going to be, and Sam picked up | 0:05:06 | 0:05:09
on that quite a lot and he was quite worried, as well. | 0:05:09 | 0:05:11
So if we stand to the side and then the cows will walk past us | 0:05:11 | 0:05:15
-in a minute. If you just stand... -What? | 0:05:15 | 0:05:17
I was quite scared when they were just, like, there | 0:05:19 | 0:05:23
and they're all bashing about and pooing everywhere. | 0:05:23 | 0:05:27
I was a bit scared. | 0:05:27 | 0:05:29
That's massive. | 0:05:33 | 0:05:34
The herd are coming in for milking. | 0:05:34 | 0:05:36
This is the ideal opportunity for the junior vets to spot any | 0:05:36 | 0:05:40
poorly-looking animals as they file past. | 0:05:40 | 0:05:42
Just come across. | 0:05:45 | 0:05:47
-Oh, oh, oh! -It's OK. | 0:05:47 | 0:05:49
-They're not going to attack you, Sam. -That's OK. You're not going | 0:05:49 | 0:05:52
to get hurt by them. Right, just come over here. | 0:05:52 | 0:05:55
They're more scared of you. | 0:05:57 | 0:05:59
At first glance, the herd seem perfectly healthy | 0:06:01 | 0:06:04
and head to the milking stalls. | 0:06:04 | 0:06:07
Isabelle wants Sam and Lauren to be more confident around cows | 0:06:07 | 0:06:10
and suggests they help farmer Steve with the milking today. | 0:06:10 | 0:06:14
Great work, Lauren. | 0:06:15 | 0:06:17
And despite his nerves, Sam seems willing to get stuck in. | 0:06:17 | 0:06:20
-That's it. Easy-peasy, eh? -Yeah. | 0:06:21 | 0:06:24
Yet again, he's facing up to his anxieties and is working well | 0:06:25 | 0:06:29
with these huge animals. | 0:06:29 | 0:06:30
Lauren, what's it like being this close to cows? | 0:06:32 | 0:06:34
It's mad, it's really cool, just because they're | 0:06:34 | 0:06:37
so big, it's just really weird, because they're just beautiful. | 0:06:37 | 0:06:42
They're absolutely gorgeous. | 0:06:42 | 0:06:43
I'm finding it a bit nerve-wracking, scary, cos they're just big animals. | 0:06:43 | 0:06:48
I've seen cows before, but once you're this close to them, | 0:06:48 | 0:06:52
-they're huge. -Have they told you what to do when their tails go up? | 0:06:52 | 0:06:55
-Run. -Oh. Oh, OK, I get it. | 0:06:57 | 0:07:00
Later, the junior vets hunt for clues to a cow's mystery illness. | 0:07:02 | 0:07:07
Who wants to take this cow's urine? | 0:07:07 | 0:07:09
Late last night, a very poorly patient was admitted to the | 0:07:14 | 0:07:18
vet school's small animal hospital. | 0:07:18 | 0:07:20
Ferret Edward had been brought in by his worried owner. | 0:07:21 | 0:07:24
He'd stopped eating and had lost so much weight that he was | 0:07:24 | 0:07:27
nearly unconscious. | 0:07:27 | 0:07:29
Vet Emma Keeble gave him emergency treatment and though he | 0:07:29 | 0:07:33
survived the night, he is still very poorly. | 0:07:33 | 0:07:35
Junior vets Morgan and Will have been called in | 0:07:40 | 0:07:43
to help with the investigation. | 0:07:43 | 0:07:45
It's a bit of a detective case this one, | 0:07:46 | 0:07:48
because we don't exactly know what's wrong with him. | 0:07:48 | 0:07:51
He came in yesterday really not very well at all. | 0:07:51 | 0:07:54
In fact, we actually thought he was going to die. | 0:07:54 | 0:07:56
And he has had fluids, he's had some pain relief. | 0:07:56 | 0:07:59
So what we're needing to find out today is why he's not been eating. | 0:07:59 | 0:08:04
One thought is possibly his mouth. | 0:08:04 | 0:08:06
So we'll need to have a look in there and see. | 0:08:06 | 0:08:08
My junior vets have learnt how to handle most kinds of animals, | 0:08:08 | 0:08:11
and they know the right questions to ask before they touch anything | 0:08:11 | 0:08:14
-potentially dangerous. -Is he a biter? | 0:08:14 | 0:08:17
No, he doesn't bite at all, he's very friendly. | 0:08:17 | 0:08:20
-Would you like to hold him? -Yeah. -This is a first for Morgan. | 0:08:20 | 0:08:23
He's never seen a live ferret before, | 0:08:23 | 0:08:25
but he really wants to help poorly Edward. | 0:08:25 | 0:08:29
I've always wanted to actually hold a ferret. | 0:08:29 | 0:08:32
Edward's in the best possible hands, but the team need to know why | 0:08:32 | 0:08:36
he's lost his appetite and need to get him eating again. | 0:08:36 | 0:08:39
Come here, sweetheart. | 0:08:39 | 0:08:41
Emma has a good idea where to look first. | 0:08:41 | 0:08:44
Little bit worried about his mouth. | 0:08:44 | 0:08:45
And maybe I could get you guys to find anything | 0:08:45 | 0:08:48
that you're worried about there. | 0:08:48 | 0:08:50
What would be the worst case? | 0:08:50 | 0:08:51
Well, I suppose the worst thing that could happen with his mouth | 0:08:51 | 0:08:54
is we could find that his teeth are really rotten and falling out. | 0:08:54 | 0:08:57
Toothache might not seem that serious, | 0:08:57 | 0:09:00
but if it's stopping Edward eating, it could be life-threatening. | 0:09:00 | 0:09:03
As an owner, what can you do to make sure the ferret has clean teeth? | 0:09:03 | 0:09:07
Owners can actually get the ferret used to cleaning teeth | 0:09:07 | 0:09:11
and we have little toothbrushes that fit onto a finger. | 0:09:11 | 0:09:14
And we also have meat-flavoured toothpaste, | 0:09:14 | 0:09:16
so they can get used to that. | 0:09:16 | 0:09:18
The other thing is feeding a dry food diet can really help. | 0:09:18 | 0:09:21
To get a really good look inside Edward's mouth, he needs to | 0:09:22 | 0:09:25
be unconscious for the delicate procedure. | 0:09:25 | 0:09:28
But giving anaesthetic to a small, weak animal is very risky. | 0:09:28 | 0:09:32
He isn't a brilliant candidate for an anaesthetic | 0:09:32 | 0:09:35
so we're going to have to be quite quick with this and get on. | 0:09:35 | 0:09:38
And later, the junior vets get to the root of Edward's problem. | 0:09:40 | 0:09:44
-Can you see that that tooth there is quite wobbly? -Oh, yeah. | 0:09:44 | 0:09:47
Look at that. Wow. | 0:09:47 | 0:09:48
In the small animal hospital... | 0:09:53 | 0:09:55
Hey, darling. | 0:09:55 | 0:09:56
..new arrival, Coco the African Grey Parrot is waiting to be seen | 0:09:56 | 0:10:00
with owner, Glenda. | 0:10:00 | 0:10:02
Normally chatty, Coco's lost her voice and is sounding very poorly. | 0:10:02 | 0:10:06
She's making a rattling noise and we don't know what that noise is yet. | 0:10:06 | 0:10:10
But she's still a bit nippy. | 0:10:10 | 0:10:12
You show him your tongue, he'll bite it. | 0:10:12 | 0:10:14
Junior vets Saira and Amblessed are on hand to take care of Coco today. | 0:10:17 | 0:10:21
African grey. Well, I love parrots. | 0:10:21 | 0:10:24
I was amazed when I first saw Coco. I wouldn't think that | 0:10:24 | 0:10:26
I would be working with an African grey and I was just quite shocked. | 0:10:26 | 0:10:30
Wow, he looks really friendly. | 0:10:30 | 0:10:32
Does it bite? | 0:10:32 | 0:10:34
What, Coco? Never(!) | 0:10:34 | 0:10:35
Coco is under the care of exotics expert, Kevin Eatwell. | 0:10:37 | 0:10:40
Coco had suffered from serious breathing problems in the past. | 0:10:42 | 0:10:45
Kevin is concerned and wants the junior vets to help him examine her. | 0:10:45 | 0:10:49
If she bites you, it's going to be really painful. | 0:10:49 | 0:10:51
This beak is designed for cracking nuts. | 0:10:51 | 0:10:53
We've got to be careful how we hold her, cos if she flaps, | 0:10:53 | 0:10:56
she might injure her wing and things like that. | 0:10:56 | 0:10:58
Right, we best get going. | 0:10:58 | 0:11:01
First, Coco needs an X-ray, which means she has to be | 0:11:01 | 0:11:03
anaesthetised so she stays still for the process. | 0:11:03 | 0:11:07
And Kevin has a big job for Amblessed. | 0:11:07 | 0:11:09
We need you to be monitoring the anaesthetic and this bird | 0:11:09 | 0:11:11
continuously. So no distractions, no walking off. | 0:11:11 | 0:11:13
We need you to be listening to this heartbeat and watching it breathe. | 0:11:13 | 0:11:16
I had to measure Coco's heartbeat through the operation, | 0:11:16 | 0:11:19
cos if it dropped, she could be in serious danger. | 0:11:19 | 0:11:22
Saira's assisting with the X-ray and straps Coco down so they can | 0:11:25 | 0:11:28
take a clear picture. | 0:11:28 | 0:11:29
Need to stick the legs down, too. | 0:11:29 | 0:11:31
But Kevin's not happy with what he sees. | 0:11:32 | 0:11:35
There's a little bit of a shadow here, which might not be | 0:11:36 | 0:11:39
perfectly normal. So we're going to take her through into theatre. | 0:11:39 | 0:11:43
Something is wrong inside Coco's chest. | 0:11:43 | 0:11:46
They need to check it right now. | 0:11:47 | 0:11:50
We've just moved Coco from the room that we just took her | 0:11:50 | 0:11:53
X-rays from and we've put her into the theatre. | 0:11:53 | 0:11:57
Amblessed tries to monitor Coco's heart rate. | 0:11:57 | 0:12:00
But a parrot's heartbeat is so fast, | 0:12:00 | 0:12:02
it's tricky to detect small differences. | 0:12:02 | 0:12:05
Things are getting tense in theatre. | 0:12:05 | 0:12:07
-Have you done the anaesthetic before? -What is this? What's that? | 0:12:07 | 0:12:10
-That's the ET. -What's that? | 0:12:10 | 0:12:12
-Right, heart rate, what's happening to your heart rate? -It's slowed down. | 0:12:12 | 0:12:15
OK, so do you think that is something you should have told us? | 0:12:15 | 0:12:19
Amblessed hadn't noticed that Coco's heart rate has dropped | 0:12:19 | 0:12:22
dangerously low. Thankfully, the theatre nurse has spotted it. | 0:12:22 | 0:12:25
So she's probably too deep under anaesthetic now | 0:12:25 | 0:12:28
and if you're detecting a change in heart rate, that's something | 0:12:28 | 0:12:31
you should have told us. | 0:12:31 | 0:12:33
And things get alarming later when Coco's operation turns into a | 0:12:33 | 0:12:37
blue light situation. | 0:12:37 | 0:12:39
-You have to leave the building. -Go, go, go. | 0:12:39 | 0:12:42
My junior vets are completing an intensive training programme | 0:12:48 | 0:12:51
here at vet school. | 0:12:51 | 0:12:52
Each session is designed to prepare them for handling real animals | 0:12:54 | 0:12:57
in real situations. | 0:12:57 | 0:12:58
For impressive training zone performances, | 0:13:01 | 0:13:04
I give out vet skills credits. | 0:13:04 | 0:13:05
And along with the all-important vital vet work awards, | 0:13:05 | 0:13:09
they'll help me decide who will eventually be named head vet. | 0:13:09 | 0:13:13
Today's training zone session will test my junior vets' | 0:13:13 | 0:13:16
hand-to-eye co-ordination skills in a very unusual way. | 0:13:16 | 0:13:20
First, farm vet Isabelle is on hand to set up this | 0:13:20 | 0:13:23
mysterious-looking machine. And what is it? | 0:13:23 | 0:13:26
Oh... | 0:13:26 | 0:13:28 | |
Yep, it's a cow's behind. | 0:13:28 | 0:13:31
They're about to be trained on a model of a cow's bum, | 0:13:31 | 0:13:34
used by students at Glasgow University to perfect the art | 0:13:34 | 0:13:37
of doing internal examinations on cows. | 0:13:37 | 0:13:39
All farm vets have to complete regular pregnancy tests on cattle. | 0:13:39 | 0:13:44
The most straightforward way to test if one is pregnant is to put | 0:13:44 | 0:13:47
your hand inside and feel around. | 0:13:47 | 0:13:49
Can we have our first junior vet? Lauren. | 0:13:50 | 0:13:54
Looking very excited, Lauren, about this challenge. | 0:13:54 | 0:13:56
Put your arm in the back of the cow. | 0:13:59 | 0:14:02
The junior vets need to learn exactly where to find each part | 0:14:02 | 0:14:05
of the cow's insides by touch alone. | 0:14:05 | 0:14:07
Move to the left and to the right. | 0:14:07 | 0:14:10
A special device hidden inside the fake cow is linked to the screen. | 0:14:11 | 0:14:14
So you're the blue dot in the middle here. | 0:14:14 | 0:14:17
When they move the mechanical arm with their finger, | 0:14:17 | 0:14:20
it moves a blue dot around. | 0:14:20 | 0:14:22
The red bit is the uterus and the green oval shapes are the ovaries. | 0:14:22 | 0:14:26
OK, off you go. You tell me when you're at your first point | 0:14:26 | 0:14:29
and your second point. | 0:14:29 | 0:14:31
My junior vets can't see the screen. | 0:14:31 | 0:14:33
What they feel is a virtual reality of the cow's insides. | 0:14:33 | 0:14:37
I think that's the uterus. | 0:14:37 | 0:14:39
OK. | 0:14:39 | 0:14:40 | |
I think that's the ovary. | 0:14:40 | 0:14:42
Lauren finds the body parts immediately. | 0:14:42 | 0:14:45
Off you go. | 0:14:46 | 0:14:48
But it's a struggle for Saira. | 0:14:48 | 0:14:50
And Sam. | 0:14:50 | 0:14:52
Is that the uterus? | 0:14:52 | 0:14:53
And neither identify any of the anatomy. | 0:14:53 | 0:14:57
The junior vets are not only judged on their ability to find | 0:14:57 | 0:15:00
the uterus and ovaries... | 0:15:00 | 0:15:02
Is that the uterus? | 0:15:02 | 0:15:03
..but also on how they use the kit. | 0:15:04 | 0:15:06
-Get yourself in the middle. Yep. -Yep. | 0:15:06 | 0:15:09
The machine is very delicate and requires small, gentle | 0:15:09 | 0:15:12
movements from Morgan. | 0:15:12 | 0:15:13
-Is that the first bit? -All right, well done. | 0:15:13 | 0:15:16
-Is that the right ovary? -Excellent. | 0:15:16 | 0:15:20
So who knows their cows inside out? | 0:15:20 | 0:15:23
Lauren, Amblessed and Morgan all identified the uterus and | 0:15:28 | 0:15:31
both ovaries, and handled the equipment brilliantly. | 0:15:31 | 0:15:34
So all three win vet skills credits. | 0:15:34 | 0:15:36
You can see how you get on as a virtual vet in the junior vets game | 0:15:39 | 0:15:42
on the CBBC website. | 0:15:42 | 0:15:45
And don't forget to look for the special game code at the end | 0:15:45 | 0:15:48
of today's show. | 0:15:48 | 0:15:49
At the vet school dairy farm, one of the cows is struggling | 0:15:57 | 0:16:00
to produce milk. | 0:16:00 | 0:16:01
Vet Isabelle is worried that it means she's in pain. | 0:16:01 | 0:16:04
Junior vets Sam and Lauren are helping her investigate the problem. | 0:16:05 | 0:16:09
First, a smelly and messy test which might just give up some clues | 0:16:09 | 0:16:12
to the cow's health problem. | 0:16:12 | 0:16:14
Who wants to take this cow's urine? | 0:16:14 | 0:16:17
-Me. -I want to do it. | 0:16:17 | 0:16:19
Oh, there seems to be a dilemma here. | 0:16:19 | 0:16:21
We're going to have to decide. | 0:16:21 | 0:16:22
We both wanted to take the wee sample. I don't know why. | 0:16:22 | 0:16:25
I wanted to get stuck in with collecting the wee from the cow. | 0:16:25 | 0:16:31
And, in fact, me and Sam had a little bit of a disagreement | 0:16:31 | 0:16:34
about who was going to do it. | 0:16:34 | 0:16:36
BOTH: Rock, paper, scissors? | 0:16:36 | 0:16:37
Go on, then. | 0:16:37 | 0:16:38
Rock, paper, scissors. | 0:16:38 | 0:16:40
Oh. Damn. | 0:16:40 | 0:16:42
So the way to try and make this cow pee is to actually give her | 0:16:44 | 0:16:49
a little bit of stimulation just under her tail. | 0:16:49 | 0:16:52
It looks strange, but this is a guaranteed way of getting that | 0:16:55 | 0:16:58
all-important wee sample. | 0:16:58 | 0:17:00
Well, to get the wee sample, I had to massage near its bum. | 0:17:02 | 0:17:06
It wasn't very nice. | 0:17:07 | 0:17:09
-Keep going. Keep going. -Well done. | 0:17:12 | 0:17:15
Ooh, yay! | 0:17:16 | 0:17:18
-That's one urine sample. -Yep. | 0:17:18 | 0:17:21
And if you just dip that stick in the urine for a couple of seconds. | 0:17:21 | 0:17:25
That's right. OK. | 0:17:25 | 0:17:27
Now to test the sample. | 0:17:27 | 0:17:29
So what would be the most worrying? | 0:17:31 | 0:17:33
-When they go really dark purple. -OK. -OK. | 0:17:33 | 0:17:37
The test shows up no obvious illnesses. | 0:17:37 | 0:17:39
-So that's it for a urine sample. -OK. | 0:17:39 | 0:17:42
Right. | 0:17:42 | 0:17:43
My junior vets are still no closer to working out why the cow | 0:17:43 | 0:17:46
is not producing milk properly. | 0:17:46 | 0:17:49
Now it's Lauren's turn. They need a milk sample for more tests, | 0:17:49 | 0:17:53
but it's not as easy as it sounds. | 0:17:53 | 0:17:55
Keep going. Just let it go and let it fill up again. | 0:17:55 | 0:17:59
Let it fill up. | 0:17:59 | 0:18:00
I'm not very good at this. | 0:18:03 | 0:18:05
That was Lauren's first ever try at milking a cow. | 0:18:06 | 0:18:09
I'm impressed. She gets our sample in no time. | 0:18:09 | 0:18:12
Can you do a couple more? That's it. | 0:18:12 | 0:18:15
If the cow has an udder infection, this chemical | 0:18:17 | 0:18:20
will make the milk thick. If she's OK, it will stay liquid-y. | 0:18:20 | 0:18:24
What do we want to happen? | 0:18:25 | 0:18:26
We actually just want it to just stay fluid. | 0:18:26 | 0:18:31
One of the samples turns lumpy. Not good. | 0:18:31 | 0:18:34
It indicates the cow has an infection called mastitis, | 0:18:34 | 0:18:37
an inflammation of the udders which can be really painful. | 0:18:37 | 0:18:40
So we've been able now to identify that there is a problem with | 0:18:40 | 0:18:43
this cow's udder, that she's got an infection in there, | 0:18:43 | 0:18:46
and that her two hindquarters definitely are inflamed. | 0:18:46 | 0:18:50
Thankfully, it should be easily treatable | 0:18:52 | 0:18:54
with a cow-size dose of antibiotics. | 0:18:54 | 0:18:56
What we'll do is we'll prescribe some antibiotics, the farmer | 0:18:56 | 0:19:00
will administer these over the next couple of days, | 0:19:00 | 0:19:02
and this cow should return to normal milk production. | 0:19:02 | 0:19:05
-So that's our job done here. -Brilliant. -OK, great. | 0:19:05 | 0:19:10
It's been a brilliant junior vet performance | 0:19:10 | 0:19:12
from both Lauren and Sam. | 0:19:12 | 0:19:14
Today, working on the farm has been a whole different experience. | 0:19:14 | 0:19:18
I don't know whether it's been exciting, | 0:19:18 | 0:19:21
good, or a mixture of both, but it's certainly been interesting. | 0:19:21 | 0:19:24
And an update on our cow - she's now pain-free, healthy, | 0:19:25 | 0:19:29
and producing lots of milk every day. | 0:19:29 | 0:19:31
Back over at the small animal hospital, Morgan and Will | 0:19:38 | 0:19:41
are trying to help Edward the ferret. | 0:19:41 | 0:19:43
He arrived late last night seriously ill and underweight, and there was | 0:19:43 | 0:19:46
a real worry he wouldn't survive. | 0:19:46 | 0:19:49
Vet Emma Keeble suspects that a dental problem may be the issue, | 0:19:49 | 0:19:52
and that because it's so painful to eat, Edward's been starving. | 0:19:52 | 0:19:56
This one, can you see that that tooth there is quite wobbly? | 0:19:56 | 0:20:00
-Look at that. -Oh, yeah. -Wow. | 0:20:00 | 0:20:01
The other tooth, you see that might have fractured a bit | 0:20:01 | 0:20:04
because that looks a bit dark and discoloured. | 0:20:04 | 0:20:06
So we'll have a look at that, as well. | 0:20:06 | 0:20:08
Poor Edward's teeth are in a terrible state. | 0:20:08 | 0:20:11
One is beyond repair and needs removing. | 0:20:11 | 0:20:13
So I think we may have found our problem here. | 0:20:13 | 0:20:16
It should be a quick and painless procedure. | 0:20:18 | 0:20:21
If I just give a gentle tug, we've just loosened the ligament around it. | 0:20:21 | 0:20:26
Job done. | 0:20:27 | 0:20:29
There we go. | 0:20:29 | 0:20:30
And the junior vets can get a closer look at the tiny tooth that's | 0:20:30 | 0:20:33
caused such a huge problem. | 0:20:33 | 0:20:35
I was really happy that removing that tooth | 0:20:35 | 0:20:38
meant that we saved his life. | 0:20:38 | 0:20:40
With the broken tooth removed, | 0:20:40 | 0:20:42
the team take full advantage of Edward being under anaesthetic and | 0:20:42 | 0:20:46
give the rest of his teeth a good clean to prevent further problems. | 0:20:46 | 0:20:49
That's great. | 0:20:49 | 0:20:51
Will does a great job on the first few. | 0:20:51 | 0:20:54
And Morgan makes sure the others are gleaming. | 0:20:55 | 0:20:58
That's it, brilliant. | 0:20:58 | 0:20:59
With the operation successfully complete, | 0:20:59 | 0:21:03
Edward just needs an antibiotic injection before waking up. | 0:21:03 | 0:21:06
But then... | 0:21:08 | 0:21:09
..alarm bells ring. | 0:21:13 | 0:21:15
FIRE ALARM WAILS | 0:21:15 | 0:21:17
We could hear the fire alarm, I was really shocked. | 0:21:17 | 0:21:20
I thought it was a practice but it turned out to be real. | 0:21:20 | 0:21:23
Everyone needs to leave the building. Immediately. | 0:21:24 | 0:21:27
And that includes the recovering Edward. | 0:21:27 | 0:21:30
It turns out that one of the students accidentally left | 0:21:30 | 0:21:33
a piece of toast in the toaster. | 0:21:33 | 0:21:35
-I can't believe that. What day we've had! -I know. | 0:21:35 | 0:21:38
A bit nerve-wracking after we knew it was coming out of that | 0:21:38 | 0:21:40
-anaesthetic and we had to come out. -It was. Did you feel that yourselves? | 0:21:40 | 0:21:44
-Yeah. -Yeah. -Yeah, I mean, that's really on the cutting edge, isn't it? | 0:21:44 | 0:21:48
Impressive work from both junior vets. | 0:21:48 | 0:21:50
Will and Morgan stayed calm when others might have panicked. | 0:21:50 | 0:21:53
And Edward came through his eventful surgery just fine. | 0:21:53 | 0:21:57
I think the end result of Edward being OK | 0:21:57 | 0:22:00
showed that we did quite well. And although all the drama happened, | 0:22:00 | 0:22:05
we still pulled through and managed to make him OK. | 0:22:05 | 0:22:07
They were both sort of interested. | 0:22:07 | 0:22:09
They were both trying to help as much as possible | 0:22:09 | 0:22:11
and having a go with the polisher, which was brilliant. | 0:22:11 | 0:22:13
But really considering they've never done anything like that before | 0:22:13 | 0:22:16
in their life, they were both amazing. | 0:22:16 | 0:22:18
And the very latest news on Edward - he's now back to his normal weight | 0:22:18 | 0:22:22
and eating plenty. | 0:22:22 | 0:22:24
At the small animal hospital, | 0:22:32 | 0:22:34
Coco the parrot is undergoing an operation to find out | 0:22:34 | 0:22:37
what's wrong with her chest. | 0:22:37 | 0:22:39
Saira and Amblessed are assisting vet Kevin Eatwell. | 0:22:41 | 0:22:44
Earlier in the op, Coco's heart rate dropped dangerously low, | 0:22:44 | 0:22:48
but now she's stable. | 0:22:48 | 0:22:50
Kevin makes a small hole in Coco's chest so a tiny camera scope | 0:22:54 | 0:22:57
can be inserted. And it soon identifies the problem. | 0:22:57 | 0:23:02
This should be clear, the grey stuff is abnormal | 0:23:02 | 0:23:04
so we do have some airsacculitis here. | 0:23:04 | 0:23:06
It looks like air sacs in Coco's lungs are infected, | 0:23:06 | 0:23:10
and this explains why she's lost her voice and has a wheezy cough. | 0:23:10 | 0:23:13
We've had a look. Her air bags aren't looking so normal, | 0:23:13 | 0:23:17
so we're going to give her some antibiotics for that. | 0:23:17 | 0:23:19
But as the operation reaches its final stages... | 0:23:19 | 0:23:22
..the fire alarm that disrupted | 0:23:24 | 0:23:26
the end of Edward the ferret's op strikes. | 0:23:26 | 0:23:28
If you're in the middle of an operation like this, | 0:23:28 | 0:23:30
-and then it goes off...? -Providing we know where we're going to get out | 0:23:30 | 0:23:33
and we know how long it's going to take us, we can continue. | 0:23:33 | 0:23:36
Coco is still asleep and has an open wound in her chest. | 0:23:38 | 0:23:41
The team must work extremely fast. | 0:23:41 | 0:23:43
Just thinking, we've got to do some serious vet work now, | 0:23:43 | 0:23:46
and then the fire alarm goes off. | 0:23:46 | 0:23:48
Human safety comes first at vet school. They can only carry on | 0:23:48 | 0:23:50
for a few more seconds. | 0:23:50 | 0:23:52
And now Coco's heart rate has dropped dangerously low again. | 0:23:54 | 0:23:57
Is the heart rate dropping? How low? | 0:23:57 | 0:23:59
I don't know, it's just gone slower. | 0:23:59 | 0:24:01
We're just checking her heart rate | 0:24:01 | 0:24:03
and her respiration rate now, checking she's still alive. | 0:24:03 | 0:24:05
-She's still breathing all right. -The chest is rising. | 0:24:05 | 0:24:08
Keep listening. Keep her ventilated. | 0:24:08 | 0:24:10
The emergency evacuation procedure kicks in. | 0:24:10 | 0:24:13
Coco's still under anaesthetic but the wound has been stitched. | 0:24:13 | 0:24:16
-Now it's time to go. -We have to leave the building. | 0:24:16 | 0:24:19
Everybody has to go. That door there. | 0:24:19 | 0:24:21
Go, go, go. | 0:24:24 | 0:24:26
Keep going. | 0:24:26 | 0:24:28
We had to rush outside while I was just about the finish the operation. | 0:24:28 | 0:24:32
We just had to make sure that the parrot was OK. | 0:24:32 | 0:24:36
Is she going to be all right? | 0:24:36 | 0:24:37
They're soon given the all clear to go back inside, | 0:24:37 | 0:24:41
and Coco is showing signs of life. | 0:24:41 | 0:24:43
I think he was just kind of slowly opening his eyes, quite unsure | 0:24:47 | 0:24:51
but then he opened his eyes and he was all right. | 0:24:51 | 0:24:53
Coco has had a traumatic experience, | 0:24:56 | 0:24:58
and is put inside an incubator to keep her nice and warm. | 0:24:58 | 0:25:02
That was an unusual day at vet school and tested my junior vets | 0:25:02 | 0:25:05
more than I ever expected. | 0:25:05 | 0:25:07
The most difficult thing for me was monitoring the heartbeat | 0:25:07 | 0:25:10
because when it was really fast, it was really hard to count. | 0:25:10 | 0:25:14
It was quite relieving to know that the bird was safe. | 0:25:14 | 0:25:17
And the good news is that despite all the drama, Coco made a | 0:25:18 | 0:25:22
full recovery and is now back home. | 0:25:22 | 0:25:24
Good vets need to be able to handle the unusual and the unexpected. | 0:25:33 | 0:25:36
Today, all of my junior vets proved they have what it takes. | 0:25:37 | 0:25:41
But my vital vet work awards are only given to performances | 0:25:41 | 0:25:44
above and beyond the call of veterinary duty. | 0:25:44 | 0:25:47
Sam and Lauren handled dairy farm vet work very well. | 0:25:47 | 0:25:50
Sam overcame his nerves and they worked together to help a cow | 0:25:50 | 0:25:53
with a painful problem. | 0:25:53 | 0:25:56
But it was a fire alarm that provided an ultimate test | 0:25:56 | 0:25:59
for two of my teams. | 0:25:59 | 0:26:01
Saira and Amblessed were brilliant with Coco | 0:26:01 | 0:26:03
and threw themselves into surgery. | 0:26:03 | 0:26:05
But a little more focus was needed on more than one occasion. | 0:26:05 | 0:26:08
Morgan and Will also had to contend with the fire alarm. | 0:26:10 | 0:26:13
They handled the pressure well and I was particularly impressed | 0:26:13 | 0:26:16
by Will's delicate touch and compassion for his patient. | 0:26:16 | 0:26:19
It's impossible to pick out an individual winner today | 0:26:21 | 0:26:24
but my decision has been made. | 0:26:24 | 0:26:26
Three junior vets stood out today. And they were... | 0:26:26 | 0:26:30
Lauren, Sam and Will. | 0:26:37 | 0:26:41
Brilliant vet work, well done, guys. | 0:26:42 | 0:26:45
All three junior vets stepped up to the mark when it was asked of them. | 0:26:45 | 0:26:48
All put their patients before themselves today and fully deserve | 0:26:48 | 0:26:52
their vital vet work awards. | 0:26:52 | 0:26:54
I think I won today because I was inquisitive, and as well as it | 0:26:54 | 0:26:57
benefiting my knowledge, it also went towards helping the ferret. | 0:26:57 | 0:27:01
I was growing in confidence with the cows | 0:27:01 | 0:27:04
and I think we did a really good job. | 0:27:04 | 0:27:06
We really enjoyed ourselves | 0:27:06 | 0:27:08
