It's something very old.

Millions of years old.

That's older than the oldest sock under my bed.

It's called a fossil.

A what-il?

Let me explain.

Fossils are made when a plant or an animal falls on soft land

and doesn't move again.

Usually, somewhere near water.

This plant or animal is then covered over with mud or clay and sand.

Over millions of years,

the original object fades.

Water dries up.

But the minerals form the shape of the plant or animal that was there.

Then this shape goes really hard.

Hard as a rock.

So, what you're left with is a fossil.

A rock version of what fell there millions of years ago.

Balabalaboomboom.

The fossil of a leaf is the perfect thing to decorate a sandcastle.

I don't think this is a leaf, Messy.

It's curved.

Maybe it's the fossil of a banana.

Or a boomerang.

Er, no. I don't think it's any of those things.

Maybe it's just a little piece of something bigger.

Ah, yes.

Scientists called palaeontologists

dig for fossils and match the pieces together like a puzzle.

Then they can work out what it used to be.

I was looking for a dinosaur before but I couldn't find one.

That's because they lived in Okido millions of years ago

before the climate changed and made it difficult for them to live here.

In fact, the only way we know about them

is from the fossils that were left behind.

So that's why I've never seen a dinosaur.

They all lived a long time ago.

The sea's coming in and washing away our sandcastles.

Oh, and it's going to wash away our fossil.

What if we put it somewhere where everybody could see it?
