Where is it coming from?

I just can't identify it.

We were on our way back from the mountains,

when we heard a clicking sound. It's very distracting.

We've tried everything, so we thought you could help us look.

It's an Okido long-eared bat.

Quite a young one, I'd say,

and it lives in caves in the Okido mountains.

Where we've just come back from. How did it get in?

Look. Is that how you drink? From a lake or a river?

Oh, it's dark. How's the bat going to find its way?

Bats are used to the dark.

They're awake at night rather than in the daytime

and so they use sound to find their way around and to find food.

But bat is still making that clicking noise. Why does it do that?

When bats make their clicking noise,

they're sending out tiny bits of sound called sound waves.

When those sound waves hit something, they bounce back.

-So, sound can bounce off things?

-Exactly.

Sound bounces and comes back just like a ball.

If it hits something and you're the right distance away,

you hear it coming back.

That's called an echo and now comes the clever bit.

The bat has very large ears.

The bat's ears can hear the echoes much better than we can

and then its brain uses the echoes to work out where things are

and what shape they are. Bats can tell the difference

between the size and shape and feel of things, even water,

because of the way the sound waves bounce.

Whales and dolphins can do it too and another thing

-that's very interesting is that...
