-CHUCKLING -Oh, hello! Great to see you. | 0:00:43 | 0:00:45
I'm having a rummage in the Doodle Drawers. | 0:00:45 | 0:00:49
I'm looking for... | 0:00:49 | 0:00:50
some...aha! ..wool! Here it is. | 0:00:50 | 0:00:54
Now, it's my auntie Mildred Maker's birthday, | 0:00:54 | 0:00:58
so I'm going to knit her a scarf. She'd really like that, yeah. | 0:00:58 | 0:01:02
HE CHUCKLES | 0:01:02 | 0:01:04
BAA! | 0:01:05 | 0:01:06 | |
I'm sure the end's not far away. | 0:01:06 | 0:01:09
BAA! | 0:01:10 | 0:01:11 | |
Oh, right. I'll just give it a little pull. | 0:01:11 | 0:01:16
Oh! At last! | 0:01:27 | 0:01:29
-I've found the end of the wool. Ha! -BAA! | 0:01:29 | 0:01:32
Oh. But I might be a bit tangled up. | 0:01:32 | 0:01:36
HE CHUCKLES | 0:01:36 | 0:01:37
Never mind though, | 0:01:37 | 0:01:39
this has given me a great idea! | 0:01:39 | 0:01:42
DING! | 0:01:42 | 0:01:43 | |
Let's try something! | 0:01:43 | 0:01:44
Try making a wonderful, woolly, winding picture. | 0:01:45 | 0:01:49
First, we need to tidy up... | 0:01:49 | 0:01:51
Whoo! Ha-ha-ha! | 0:01:53 | 0:01:55
Let's make it! We'll need some things from the Doodle Drawers. | 0:01:55 | 0:01:59
Some cotton reels. | 0:02:00 | 0:02:03
-Some coloured wool... -BAA! | 0:02:06 | 0:02:09
..some gloopy PVA glue... | 0:02:12 | 0:02:15
..and some card. | 0:02:17 | 0:02:20
Whoa! Look at this wonderful, | 0:02:21 | 0:02:24
woolly, winding picture. To make one of your very own, | 0:02:24 | 0:02:28
you need some coloured card. And you also need some cotton reels. | 0:02:28 | 0:02:34
You can use as many as you like, | 0:02:34 | 0:02:37
but it looks really good if you use at least six. | 0:02:37 | 0:02:41
Place your cotton reels around the card, | 0:02:41 | 0:02:44
and make sure they're spaced out, like this. | 0:02:44 | 0:02:47
When you're happy with the position of your reels, | 0:02:47 | 0:02:51
stick them down with gloopy glue. | 0:02:51 | 0:02:53
When the reels have dried firmly in place, | 0:02:59 | 0:03:02
attach a piece of thin wool to one of the reels with a knot, | 0:03:02 | 0:03:07
like this. This can be a bit tricky, | 0:03:07 | 0:03:10
so you might want to ask an adult to help you. | 0:03:10 | 0:03:14
Now we're going to start winding the wool around | 0:03:16 | 0:03:21
all of the cotton reels. | 0:03:21 | 0:03:22
Just wrap it around each one in a loop, | 0:03:22 | 0:03:25
then move on to the next one and do the same. | 0:03:25 | 0:03:28
Keep going until you've gone round each reel, and you're at the start. | 0:03:28 | 0:03:33
Tie another knot, | 0:03:33 | 0:03:34
and then snip off any extra bits of wool that you don't need. | 0:03:34 | 0:03:38
But be careful, because scissors are sharp. | 0:03:38 | 0:03:41
-Oooh! -SNARLING | 0:03:41 | 0:03:43
Do exactly the same, but with a different coloured wool. | 0:03:46 | 0:03:50
I think blue will look good. | 0:03:50 | 0:03:52
This time, we're going to start from a different reel. | 0:03:52 | 0:03:56
Let's wrap it round, and tie a knot again. | 0:03:56 | 0:04:00
There. Nice and secure. | 0:04:03 | 0:04:06
We'll wind around all the reels again, | 0:04:06 | 0:04:08
but wrap your wool around in a different order. | 0:04:08 | 0:04:12
Ensure you go round them all. | 0:04:12 | 0:04:14
And remember to finish up... | 0:04:14 | 0:04:16
at the reel you started with. Tie a knot, | 0:04:16 | 0:04:20
and snip off any extra bits. | 0:04:20 | 0:04:22
It's looking good! You can make it look even better | 0:04:28 | 0:04:32
by doing the same, using different colours, | 0:04:32 | 0:04:35
and winding around in different ways. | 0:04:35 | 0:04:38
What a great effect! It's a wonderful, woolly, winding picture. | 0:04:38 | 0:04:43
There are lots of colours and designs you can try. | 0:04:43 | 0:04:47
This one is made by sticking the cotton reels in a circle shape. | 0:04:47 | 0:04:52
And this big one is made by using lots of cotton reels, | 0:04:54 | 0:04:57
and lots of different coloured wool. | 0:04:57 | 0:05:00
And talking of lots and lots of wool, | 0:05:00 | 0:05:03
where did I put all that wool from earlier? | 0:05:03 | 0:05:06
Oh! Ha-ha! There it is! | 0:05:06 | 0:05:08
-BAA! -Ha-ha! | 0:05:09 | 0:05:11
-SNORING -Oh, what's that noise? It's a... | 0:05:11 | 0:05:14
Ah, it's coming from the shelves. Come on! | 0:05:14 | 0:05:17
It's the Shapes. They're asleep again. | 0:05:18 | 0:05:22
Let's wake them up! | 0:05:22 | 0:05:23
SNUFFLING | 0:05:26 | 0:05:28
Oh, oh. | 0:05:28 | 0:05:30
CIRCLE GIGGLES | 0:05:30 | 0:05:32
THEY ALL SHOUT | 0:05:32 | 0:05:34
ALL: Whee! | 0:05:36 | 0:05:38
# I am a shape | 0:05:44 | 0:05:45
# La, la, la, la | 0:05:45 | 0:05:46
# I am a shape | 0:05:48 | 0:05:50
# La, la, la, la | 0:05:50 | 0:05:51
# I am a circle | 0:05:53 | 0:05:55
# I am a triangle | 0:05:58 | 0:06:00
# I am a square | 0:06:03 | 0:06:05
# I am a rectangle | 0:06:08 | 0:06:10
# I am a shape | 0:06:13 | 0:06:14
# I am a triangle. # | 0:06:16 | 0:06:19
What are the triangles making today? | 0:06:21 | 0:06:24
Can you guess? | 0:06:28 | 0:06:30
It's a cockerel! | 0:06:33 | 0:06:34
Well done, triangle. Time to get back on the shelf! | 0:06:34 | 0:06:38
ALL: Whee! | 0:06:38 | 0:06:40
LAUGHTER | 0:06:40 | 0:06:42
ALL: Oh, oh, oh. | 0:06:42 | 0:06:44
SNORING | 0:06:49 | 0:06:50
Ho-ho, now, that was a puzzling puzzle, wasn't it? | 0:06:50 | 0:06:54
CLATTERING | 0:06:54 | 0:06:55
Tocky here! Minute Make Time! | 0:06:55 | 0:06:58
Oh, great! It's Minute Make Time! | 0:06:58 | 0:07:01
Here's what we're going to make. | 0:07:04 | 0:07:06
A clacker drum! | 0:07:06 | 0:07:09
It's great fun, look! | 0:07:09 | 0:07:11
Hee-hee! And to make one, you will need... | 0:07:13 | 0:07:16
some sticky tape, a pencil, an empty cheese box - | 0:07:16 | 0:07:21
you need one with a lid, like that. | 0:07:21 | 0:07:23
A piece of string - that's got to be twice the length of your cheese box. | 0:07:23 | 0:07:28
You need a ball of sticky tack, | 0:07:28 | 0:07:32
and two large beads. | 0:07:32 | 0:07:34
Do you think it's possible to make this in just one minute? | 0:07:34 | 0:07:38
-No way! -I can't believe you're saying that, Tocky. | 0:07:38 | 0:07:42
I think I can do it! Although I will have to move very quickly. | 0:07:42 | 0:07:46
Don't worry though, I'll remind you how to do it at the end. | 0:07:46 | 0:07:50
-Let's make it in a minute! -Start the clock! | 0:07:50 | 0:07:54
Let's go! Let's get our box, and a pencil, | 0:07:54 | 0:07:57
and, very carefully, push to make a hole with the pencil, | 0:07:57 | 0:08:01
then get our ball of tack, squidge it in place, | 0:08:01 | 0:08:04
so the pencil stays firm. Put the lid back on like that. | 0:08:04 | 0:08:08
Lay our string | 0:08:08 | 0:08:09
on top. We can stick that in position with some tape, | 0:08:09 | 0:08:14
right across the middle, there. | 0:08:14 | 0:08:16
Let's get one of our beads, | 0:08:16 | 0:08:18
and feed it onto one end, there we go. | 0:08:18 | 0:08:21
Then tie a knot...there we are. | 0:08:21 | 0:08:26
Let's do the same on the other side. | 0:08:26 | 0:08:29
There's the other bead. Like this. | 0:08:29 | 0:08:31
Let's feed it on here. | 0:08:31 | 0:08:33
Through it goes, like that. Go on, through you go! | 0:08:33 | 0:08:38
There we are. | 0:08:38 | 0:08:39
Let's tie a knot on this end as well. | 0:08:39 | 0:08:42
And once I've done that... | 0:08:42 | 0:08:43
Get a move on! | 0:08:43 | 0:08:46
I'm going as fast as I can, Tocky! | 0:08:46 | 0:08:48
There's the other knot, and I have done it! | 0:08:48 | 0:08:51
Woo! | 0:08:51 | 0:08:53 | |
Only just! | 0:08:53 | 0:08:55
Yes, and if you've got more than a minute, you can decorate your drum! | 0:08:55 | 0:09:00
Look at this one here. It's got a circle of paper on each side. | 0:09:00 | 0:09:05
In fact, you can make all sorts of clacker drums in the same way. | 0:09:05 | 0:09:09
Oooh! | 0:09:09 | 0:09:10 | |
This one's painted with a swirly pattern. | 0:09:12 | 0:09:15
Ho-ho! | 0:09:15 | 0:09:18
Look at this brightly-coloured clacker drum with lots of beads! | 0:09:18 | 0:09:22
Clacker drums made in a minute! Why don't you make one? | 0:09:22 | 0:09:26
Here's a reminder of how to do it. | 0:09:26 | 0:09:29
Let's go back to the beginning and take another look. | 0:09:29 | 0:09:32
Push a hole in the side of a cheese box with a pencil, | 0:09:34 | 0:09:38
and hold it steady with sticky tack. | 0:09:38 | 0:09:41
Put the lid back on, | 0:09:41 | 0:09:42
and tape the string across the middle. | 0:09:42 | 0:09:45
Tie a bead to both ends of the string to finish your drum! | 0:09:45 | 0:09:49
Why don't you try and make it in a minute? Ha-ha! | 0:09:53 | 0:09:57
ALL: Hello, Mister Maker! | 0:09:57 | 0:10:00
ALL: Guess what we're making today? | 0:10:00 | 0:10:03
I don't know. Why don't you tell us? | 0:10:03 | 0:10:06
CHILDREN LAUGH | 0:10:06 | 0:10:08
I'm dark blue. | 0:10:12 | 0:10:14
I'm grey. | 0:10:15 | 0:10:17
I am green. | 0:10:26 | 0:10:27
I am brown. | 0:10:33 | 0:10:35
I am black. | 0:10:40 | 0:10:41
ALL: It's a koala bear! | 0:10:49 | 0:10:52
Well done, everyone! See you soon! | 0:10:52 | 0:10:54
Now it's time to frame it! | 0:10:54 | 0:10:56
Frame it! | 0:10:57 | 0:10:59
Frame it! | 0:11:00 | 0:11:01
Now, take a look at this. | 0:11:03 | 0:11:05
What a brilliant picture, made by drawing in paint on shiny paper. | 0:11:07 | 0:11:12
It's very easy to do, and looks so good, you'll be able to frame it. | 0:11:12 | 0:11:16
You will need some card, shiny silver paper, | 0:11:16 | 0:11:20
a pencil with a rubber at the end, glue, paint, and a paintbrush. | 0:11:20 | 0:11:24
First, stick a piece of shiny paper to some card. | 0:11:25 | 0:11:28
Then cover the shiny paper in dark-coloured paint. | 0:11:28 | 0:11:33
Now, draw in the wet paint using the rubber at the end of the pencil, | 0:11:36 | 0:11:41
making sure you press down firmly. | 0:11:41 | 0:11:43
You can draw whatever you like, but this is going to be a truck. | 0:11:43 | 0:11:48
Start off at the front of the truck, add a window, | 0:11:48 | 0:11:52
and a wheel, then at the back of the truck, | 0:11:52 | 0:11:56
add two more wheels. | 0:11:56 | 0:11:58
Add some details... | 0:12:01 | 0:12:04
and go over all the lines again. | 0:12:04 | 0:12:07
And when it's dry, you can see the shiny paper through the paint! | 0:12:09 | 0:12:13
What a brilliant picture! Why don't you have a go? | 0:12:13 | 0:12:17
And then...frame it! | 0:12:17 | 0:12:19
ENGINE STARTS | 0:12:20 | 0:12:22
-Isn't that effective? -HORN BLARES | 0:12:22 | 0:12:25
And now for a messy picture! Watch this. | 0:12:26 | 0:12:29
What do you think it is? | 0:12:35 | 0:12:38
It's a squirrel! | 0:12:43 | 0:12:44
Oh, ho-ho! | 0:12:44 | 0:12:46
Fantastic! Now, what's happening here? | 0:12:46 | 0:12:51
HE LAUGHS | 0:12:52 | 0:12:54
Don't mind me, I'm just practising my silly faces! Look at this. | 0:12:54 | 0:12:59
HE LAUGHS | 0:13:01 | 0:13:02
Oh, that's a really good one. Can you make silly faces? Go on. | 0:13:02 | 0:13:07
Pull a funny face - the sillier the better. Go on. | 0:13:07 | 0:13:10
Brilliant! Ha-ha! That was a very funny face. | 0:13:10 | 0:13:13
And all of our funny, silly faces have given me a great idea. | 0:13:13 | 0:13:18
-DING! -Let's make something! | 0:13:18 | 0:13:21
Make a funny face of your own, like this great gargoyle | 0:13:21 | 0:13:25
that you can stick on your wall or door. | 0:13:25 | 0:13:27
Let's make it! We'll need some things from the Doodle Drawers. | 0:13:27 | 0:13:32
A paper plate and an old newspaper. | 0:13:34 | 0:13:38
Some scraps of cardboard, some gloopy PVA glue, | 0:13:40 | 0:13:44
and some sticky tape. | 0:13:44 | 0:13:46
And some paint. | 0:13:48 | 0:13:50
Oh-ho! | 0:13:51 | 0:13:52
Now, we also need some play sand, which you can find in a toyshop. | 0:13:52 | 0:13:58
I'll be back in a tick. | 0:13:58 | 0:13:59
CAR ENGINE, BRAKES SCREECH | 0:14:01 | 0:14:03
I've got it! | 0:14:03 | 0:14:04
Here it is, our play sand. | 0:14:06 | 0:14:08
Now, take a look | 0:14:10 | 0:14:11
at this gargoyle. A gargoyle is a funny creature | 0:14:11 | 0:14:15
made out of stone, | 0:14:15 | 0:14:17
that you might find on the front of an old building. | 0:14:17 | 0:14:21
To make one, you need to start with its mouth, and for that, | 0:14:21 | 0:14:25
we need a sheet of newspaper, | 0:14:25 | 0:14:28
and we're going to roll it up like this. | 0:14:28 | 0:14:31
Then we're going to give it a twist, | 0:14:31 | 0:14:34
and stick it together with tape. | 0:14:34 | 0:14:36
Now, we're going to bend it | 0:14:42 | 0:14:44
around into a loop shape, and stick this together with more tape. | 0:14:44 | 0:14:50
And then give it a squeeze... | 0:14:54 | 0:14:56
into a mouth shape. | 0:14:56 | 0:14:58
We need to bring in | 0:14:59 | 0:15:01
our paper plate, and turn it | 0:15:01 | 0:15:04
upside down - | 0:15:04 | 0:15:06
this will be the face. | 0:15:06 | 0:15:08
Let's put on our mouth, and stick it into position. | 0:15:08 | 0:15:12
Great! | 0:15:18 | 0:15:19
Now, to make a nose, we get another piece of newspaper, | 0:15:19 | 0:15:24
and scrunch it up into a sort of pear shape. | 0:15:24 | 0:15:28
Tape it together... | 0:15:36 | 0:15:38
and stick it in the middle of the face! | 0:15:38 | 0:15:40
Now we can roll up two small balls of newspaper for nostrils. | 0:15:43 | 0:15:48
Then we can tape them either side of the nose. | 0:15:50 | 0:15:53
Now, for the eyes, | 0:15:56 | 0:15:58
use half a sheet of paper to make thinner twists - | 0:15:58 | 0:16:02
let's roll it up. | 0:16:02 | 0:16:03
And again, we can use some sticky tape | 0:16:03 | 0:16:06
to hold it in position. | 0:16:06 | 0:16:07
We can loop it round... | 0:16:14 | 0:16:16
You can always tear off a bit | 0:16:19 | 0:16:21
of the loop to make your eyes smaller. | 0:16:21 | 0:16:24
Then stick it together. | 0:16:24 | 0:16:26
Now, I'm going to put it... | 0:16:26 | 0:16:29
..here, next to the nose. | 0:16:32 | 0:16:36
We need a pupil in the middle. So... | 0:16:36 | 0:16:38
we need to scrunch up a ball | 0:16:38 | 0:16:40
from a smaller piece of newspaper, | 0:16:40 | 0:16:43
and that goes in the middle of the eye shape. | 0:16:43 | 0:16:46
Then do the same on the other side. | 0:16:46 | 0:16:48
He looks very silly, doesn't he? | 0:16:49 | 0:16:52
Now we can add some extra detail | 0:16:52 | 0:16:54
by cutting out some cardboard squares for gargoyle teeth, | 0:16:54 | 0:16:59
maybe some cardboard triangles for ears. | 0:16:59 | 0:17:03
Be careful though - scissors are sharp! | 0:17:03 | 0:17:06
Oh-ho! | 0:17:06 | 0:17:08
Here are my scissors. | 0:17:08 | 0:17:10
Here's my cardboard. Start with the teeth. | 0:17:10 | 0:17:13
Now, cutting cardboard | 0:17:13 | 0:17:15
can be a bit fiddly, | 0:17:15 | 0:17:17
so it might be a good idea to ask an adult to help you. Then, | 0:17:17 | 0:17:22
you can place them onto your gargoyle face, | 0:17:22 | 0:17:25
and do the same with two cardboard ears, | 0:17:25 | 0:17:28
and stick it all down... Great! | 0:17:28 | 0:17:31
Now comes the messy bit. | 0:17:31 | 0:17:33
Put your gargoyle on an old tray. | 0:17:33 | 0:17:35
There we go. | 0:17:38 | 0:17:39
We're going to cover the whole thing in a layer of gloopy glue. | 0:17:39 | 0:17:43
OK. Now, we need to be quick about this, | 0:17:48 | 0:17:51
we don't want the glue to dry. | 0:17:51 | 0:17:53
Sprinkle play sand all over it. | 0:17:53 | 0:17:56
Then, shake off the extra sand... | 0:17:59 | 0:18:02
and leave it to dry. Now... | 0:18:02 | 0:18:04
you can paint it a nice grey colour, | 0:18:04 | 0:18:07
add some white highlights and use black paint for the darker details. | 0:18:07 | 0:18:12
And there it is, | 0:18:17 | 0:18:19
your very own funny gargoyle! | 0:18:19 | 0:18:22
And you can make lots of different gargoyle faces. | 0:18:22 | 0:18:25
This one's got big ears and extra green paint, | 0:18:25 | 0:18:29
to look like there's moss growing on it. Or how about | 0:18:29 | 0:18:33
doing a big gargoyle with a sticking-out tongue? | 0:18:33 | 0:18:36
All of them are brilliant funny faces! Ha-ha! | 0:18:36 | 0:18:40
Excuse me... Well, I think you've got a very funny face too! | 0:18:40 | 0:18:45
-Oh, thank you very much. You're too kind. -Time to go! | 0:18:45 | 0:18:49
Oh! That's it for now. MY making time's over, | 0:18:49 | 0:18:52
but YOURS is just beginning. See you soon. | 0:18:52 | 0:18:55
It's time to put all this stuff back in its box! | 0:18:55 | 0:18:59
