Today, I've brought my travelling fete over to Hartlepool

and I'm off out to go meet some tiddlers.

-Hey, hello, tiddlers!

Aw! It's Jacob, Teagan and Thomas.

-Now, are you excited about today?

-ALL: Yeah.

I'm excited, I could hardly sleep last night.

We've got a bike disco going on over in that tent,

we've also got bug bingo.

That's where you run around the fete and try

and spot all kinds of creepy crawlies.

Do you know what? Do you like running about a bit?

-ALL: Yeah.

-Well, today, there's a vegetable assault course.

HE CHUCKLES

I reckon it'll be a lot of fun. I tell you what...

Mr Bloom. There's a problem with our apples!

I better get back to the veggies, I don't know what they're up to.

-Would you like to pop by the tent and meet them?

-All: Yeah.

Victor is my pet caterpillar.

I didn't know you had a pet caterpillar, Joan.

He's new. I've been training him

so that we can win a medal at the caterpillar trials.

-ALL:

-Caterpillar trials?

-Yes.

It's a competition, where your pet caterpillar

takes part in different events.

There's the three-legged race, the 27-legged race

and another one, the obedience test.

Hey, I think I've read about this!

So, if Victor performs tricks and he's well-behaved,

-you could win a medal!

-Come on, Victor,

let's practise your tricks!

-We've got a medal to win!

-Hey, this is exciting, isn't it, lads?

Oh, Mr Bloom. I've been looking at these beautiful plants.

-Ah!

-But how have they grown in such unusual shapes?

What happens is, the gardeners cut the ends of all the leaves

and branches and that changes the way the plants look.

It's even got a name, it's called topiary.

-Topiary?

-You can train and teach some of these plants

to grow into all sorts of shapes and sizes,

-if you've got the patience and the time.

-Lovely.

Hey, look, Compo's got pictures of topiary for us.

-A racing car!

-Yeah, that's right, Margaret!

-Colin would like that, wouldn't he?

-Yes.

-Look at that.

-Very good, Margaret.

Topiary is so exciting!

Can we explore the gardens and see what shapes we can spot?

He's the one who trains and teaches all these plants

-into these fantastic shapes.

-Oh, dear,

that plant isn't nearly as pretty as this one.

Yours is neat and tidy, but this needs a bit of a trim,

-how about giving me a hand?

-I'd love to.

-this is a job for grown-ups using these sharp shears.

You know that I've been trying to train Victor,

so that he can learn some tricks

-and he can win a medal at the Caterpillar trials?

I've just been told when the competition is!

But, Victor can't do any of the tricks,

because I can't train him and he won't listen

and that means we won't get an metal!

He's a very cheeky caterpillar, tiddlers.

I don't think Victor CAN be trained.

Oh look, Compo's up to something an' all.

-Hey, look, he's showing what we did earlier on.

-Oh, yes!

We saw the most beautiful gardens and some amazing plants,

-that had been trained.

-Plants?

-Oh, yes,

they were plants that had grown into amazing shapes.

-It was called topiary.

-Oh, topiary, oh yeah, I like that.

Yeah, it took lots of hard work and patience

and lots of careful trimming by the gardener,

but he managed to train those plants to grow

into all sorts of amazing shapes.

But how can we train Victor? Have you got any ideas, tiddlers?

Make an obstacle course.

An obstacle course? How did you come up with that idea?

Oh, I see, you went on the obstacle course outside!

Oh, it looks like you had great fun there! Hey, what did you have to do?

Run through it and climb up stuff and slide down stuff.

Oh, well that sounds like fun!

So, let's make some sort of obstacle course, yeah?

And we can train Victor to become a well-behaved caterpillar.

-Sound like a plan?

-ALL: Yeah.
