Today, I've brought my travelling fete over to Hartlepool,

and I'm off out to go and meet some tiddlers.

We're going to have a really good time today.

We've got tents full of activities.

Loads of games over there.

We've brought you some leaves from our back gardens.

I found it on the ground when we went to Cornwall.

We're all ready for the hat parade, Joan!

But Margaret, that's your space helmet.

Yes, but it's even better than a hat you see,

because it's a hat you can get INSIDE of!

Yeah-ha-ha!

But this is a homemade hat parade.

You can't wear these hats because you haven't made them.

And what about Colin? Does he know about this?

Oh yes, he's got his hat on, but I think he's a bit busy,

I just saw him trying to fly.

What?

Yeah, he's trying to use banana leaves as wings.

Ta-da! Ha-ha-ha-ha.

Aaaaagh! Ouch, oh, ooh!

What am I going to do?

All of the invites have already gone out

and none of these hats are homemade, except mine.

I'll be a laughing stock!

Don't fret, Joan.

Plenty of time to get some homemade hats sorted,

and you're in luck.

Now the fete's open, I was going to bob out and meet

some tiddlers who're experts at dressing up.

I was going to take them some old clothes.

Why would they want your old clothes?

Oh, look at that. That's a cracking scarecrow, isn't it?

But do you tiddlers know why it's standing in this field of corn?

Because it's to scare away the crows.

Spot on! You know your onions when it comes to scarecrows, don't you?

The farmers use scarecrows to scare off the crows

and all sorts of other birds to stop them eating the crops.

Tiddlers, we've seen lots of other scarecrows around the village, too.

Why are there so many here?

Because it's the Scarecrow Festival.

Oh! A scarecrow festival, Janna.

At this time of year, people like to make them

and put them outside their houses.

That sounds like so much fun.

Does that scarecrow in the field remind you of anyone?

Oh, is that so?

Shall we pretend to be scarecrows? Yeah?

So what do we need to do? Arms out straight,

feet together.

I guess we could pull some funny faces, couldn't we?

Well, maybe not, but who would they be good for?

It's great we can use things we don't need any more

and turn them into something useful like a scarecrow.

I organised a homemade hat parade

and now none of the veggies have got their hats.

Oh, look, don't fret, Joan, I'm sure we can think of something.

-Tiddlers, have you ever made a hat?

-No.

I think we need homemade hats, don't we, Joan?

But what could we make them out of?

I've used all the lovely things on my hats for these two.

We can't just use any old things, they've got to look amazing!

Look, I think Compo can help us.

This is what Margaret and I got up to earlier on.

We bumped into some unusual characters, didn't we, Margaret?

Yes, we met lots of fantastic scarecrows

and we even helped make a scarecrow ourselves!

With a little help from some expert scarecrow-makers.

What did you use?

Lots of old clothes,

old jumpers and hats that were of no use to Mr Bloom any more.

But the scarecrow looked great dressed in his old things.

Perhaps we could make hats out of something that's not needed.

I've got some cheese I don't need any more. Is that any good?

No. You would have to put it in the fridge

and it would be cold on your head.

Oh, yes.

Compo's showing us what you've been doing outside.

You've been doing some drawings. What are you using, though?

Leaves.

Leaf rubbings? Very nice.

Who would have thought you could do so much with a bunch of old leaves?

Banana leaf bean!

That's right, Colin. You've got loads of these banana leaves

and you don't need them any more.

That's it! We can make hats out of banana leaves.

Banana leaf hats? That sounds unusual. I think it could work.

But we're going to need loads more leaves from Compo.
