Hello, I'm Jenny and you are live on CBBC.

0:00:030:00:05

Coming up on Newsround.

0:00:050:00:08

Why this wild cat could make a comeback.

0:00:080:00:11

And the doggie food bank feeding hungry hounds.

0:00:110:00:14

First, it's more than 1,000 years since this wild cat,

0:00:220:00:25

called a lynx, died out in the UK.

0:00:250:00:28

Now there's a new plan to re-introduce them

0:00:280:00:30

into the English countryside, but not everyone's happy about it.

0:00:300:00:35

A bit like a leopard, crossed with a pet cat.

0:00:360:00:40

But there's no way you've seen a lynx wild in the UK.

0:00:400:00:44

That's because they used to be hunted for their beautiful fur

0:00:440:00:47

and became extinct in the UK about 1,300 years ago.

0:00:470:00:51

A group called Lynx UK Trust wants to bring them back.

0:00:510:00:55

They'd like to release six lynx to Kielder Forest in Northumberland

0:00:550:00:58

for a five-year trial and they've been talking to local

0:00:580:01:01

students about it.

0:01:010:01:05

That's actually how big a real-life lynx is.

0:01:050:01:09

Are lynx dangerous to people?

0:01:090:01:11

Lynx live all over the world and in human history a healthy wild

0:01:110:01:15

lynx has never ever ever attacked a human anywhere in the world.

0:01:150:01:21

The Lynx Trust said the cats will help keep the deer population

0:01:210:01:24

down as well as encouraging more tourists to visit the area.

0:01:240:01:29

But sheep farmers disagree.

0:01:290:01:31

They are worried the lynx could be a threat to the sheep.

0:01:310:01:34

I think it's an absolutely stupid idea for a predator that's not been

0:01:340:01:40

in this country for 1,000 years to be released.

0:01:400:01:46

As far as I'm concerned, the lynx will go for the easy target

0:01:460:01:50

which is going to be a sheep and a lamb.

0:01:500:01:53

The decision is now in the hands of a group called Natural England

0:01:530:01:56

and if they say yes it's thought there could be eventually be

0:01:560:01:59

as many as 400 lynx living in forests across the UK.

0:01:590:02:05

A treasure hunter, from Fyfe in Scotland, has made

0:02:050:02:07

a massive discovery.

0:02:070:02:08

David was 14 when he found loads of Roman silver

0:02:080:02:11

with his metal detector.

0:02:110:02:13

Now experts say the pieces are really important,

0:02:130:02:16

because they're thought to be the oldest found outside

0:02:160:02:18

the Roman Empire.

0:02:180:02:20

His find is set to go on display at the National Museum of Scotland.

0:02:200:02:25

There was 103 metal detectorists.

0:02:250:02:28

There was three fields and nothing had come up of note

0:02:280:02:32

and all of a sudden I found a few bits of silver and I showed it to

0:02:320:02:37

a friend who said that it was Roman.

0:02:370:02:40

And after that we found another 200 pieces on the first day.

0:02:400:02:45

Now close your eyes and try to imagine what

0:02:450:02:47

you'll be doing in 2028.

0:02:470:02:51

Well it might seem a very long way away but that's when the Olympic

0:02:510:02:54

and Paralympic Games are set to be held in Los Angeles in the US.

0:02:540:02:58

LA had originally wanted the 2024 Games, but that event is now set

0:02:580:03:02

to take place in Paris.

0:03:020:03:05

Next, it's been a pretty good week for British swimmer Adam Peaty.

0:03:050:03:08

He came away with two golds, and a silver,

0:03:080:03:11

at the World Swimming Championships in Budapest, in Hungary, where

0:03:110:03:13

he even broke his own world record.

0:03:130:03:14

Twice!

0:03:140:03:21

Well, Adam will be dropping by to chat to Newsround tomorrow

0:03:210:03:23

and we want your questions!

0:03:230:03:25

So head to Newsround online and send them in.

0:03:250:03:27

Having pets is brilliant, but they can be very expensive

0:03:270:03:29

to look after and feed.

0:03:290:03:30

Well, one woman has set up a unique food bank for animals.

0:03:300:03:33

Whitney went to find out more.

0:03:330:03:37

Hi.

0:03:400:03:41

Hello.

0:03:410:03:43

Say Newsround.

0:03:430:03:45

Come on.

0:03:450:03:47

Hi, Marjorie.

0:03:470:03:48

At your rescue centre that you manage, as you can

0:03:480:03:51

hear, a lot of the dogs.

0:03:510:03:52

What exactly is a doggie food bank?

0:03:520:03:54

Something that is relatively new.

0:03:540:03:57

We've just started it and what we were finding is a lot

0:03:570:04:00

of people were ringing the rescue asking us to take their pets.

0:04:000:04:04

One of the reasons is sometimes they can't afford to keep them.

0:04:040:04:08

So that's where the idea of the doggie food bank came.

0:04:080:04:11

People donate dog food and so that when people are struggling,

0:04:110:04:15

they come here and we give them the appropriate type of food

0:04:150:04:20

for the breed of dog that they have, for the age of the dog.

0:04:200:04:24

Thanks, Marjorie.

0:04:240:04:25

This is Toto.

0:04:250:04:28

I think I've made a new friend here!

0:04:280:04:32

Now it's time for me to try and feed Toto.

0:04:320:04:34

This is an example of dry food, isn't it, Marjorie?

0:04:340:04:38

So how much food would a dog need?

0:04:380:04:41

Normally a dog on dry kibble, someone Toto's size,

0:04:410:04:44

twice a day as an adult dog.

0:04:440:04:47

A puppy you're looking at feeding more often.

0:04:470:04:49

Small quantities but more often.

0:04:490:04:52

I think Toto needs some of this food because I can feel him climbing

0:04:520:04:55

up my leg ready to eat something.

0:04:550:04:57

He's definitely hungry.

0:04:570:04:58

Is this his first feed today?

0:04:580:04:59

No, he's always like this.

0:04:590:05:00

Sounds a bit like me!

0:05:000:05:09

Next, what's the best way to put out a fire?

0:05:090:05:11

A hose?

0:05:110:05:12

Bucket of water?

0:05:120:05:13

Or how about using a speedboat?

0:05:130:05:15

Well, that's exactly what this Canadian couple did

0:05:150:05:17

when they spotted a wildfire on the river bank.

0:05:170:05:20

After calling the fire brigade, they drove

0:05:200:05:24

the speedboat close to shore spinning it so water

0:05:240:05:26

splashed the flames.

0:05:260:05:28

Next, forget all about British astronaut Tim Peake,

0:05:280:05:31

because the coolest space dude nowadays, is this guy.

0:05:310:05:33

That's right, it's a dog dressed as an astronaut!

0:05:330:05:36

Lots of dogs were dressed up in snazzy costumes,

0:05:360:05:38

from pirates to pom poms, to take part in this competition

0:05:380:05:41

in El Salvador in Central America.

0:05:410:05:45

That's all from me.

0:05:450:05:48

Newsround's back at 4.20 this afternoon with Martin.

0:05:480:05:50
