Hello. You're watching Newsround with Hayley and Ore.

:00:20.:00:23.

Finally, it's 1st December. Christmas is on its way, but it'll

:00:23.:00:26.

feel like Santa's come early, because we've got a programme full

:00:26.:00:30.

of newsy pressies for you tonight. Coming up: Why toads might be able

:00:30.:00:35.

to predict earthquakes. And, the story of the spaceship

:00:35.:00:40.

that nearly never made it home. But first Afghanistan. Improving

:00:40.:00:43.

women's rights there was a key target of British and American

:00:43.:00:47.

troops after they brought down the Taliban ten years ago. The Taliban

:00:47.:00:50.

had been ruling the country and under their strict regime women

:00:50.:00:53.

weren't allowed to do basic things like go to school. But

:00:53.:00:55.

international troops are now getting ready to leave Afghanistan

:00:55.:00:59.

and women there are really worried that things will go back to how

:00:59.:01:07.

they used to be. Here's Nell with more. This is Shahazad. She wanted

:01:07.:01:12.

to be an aerospace engineer. Ten years ago a dream like hers would

:01:12.:01:16.

never have become a reality. Under the rule of the Taliban, women in

:01:16.:01:21.

Afghanistan were denied their basic rights. Girls like Shahazad were

:01:22.:01:26.

forbidden from going to school and women weren't allowed to have jobs.

:01:26.:01:29.

Now campaigners say that the terrible conditions they faced will

:01:29.:01:37.

return if the Taliban are back. In 2001 American and British troops

:01:37.:01:41.

invaded Afghanistan and the Taliban were overthrown. Over the last ten

:01:41.:01:47.

years, women's lives have slowly improved. But coalition forces are

:01:47.:01:50.

now preparing to leave the country and negotiations are under way

:01:50.:01:56.

about who will run the country. There are areas still under Taliban

:01:56.:02:01.

control which are known for their terrible treatment of women. Like

:02:01.:02:05.

like Fawzia are very worried. They've been speaking out about the

:02:05.:02:09.

way the Taliban treat women and are scared they could become real

:02:09.:02:13.

targets if the Taliban regain any power. This factory is owned by

:02:13.:02:16.

Hassina, a woman, something which would be impossible under the

:02:16.:02:20.

Taliban. She's worried that girls who have been going school and

:02:20.:02:24.

women who've been working there will be punished by the Taliban,

:02:24.:02:29.

because she says they haven't changed. We are fooling ourselves

:02:29.:02:36.

if we believe that the Taliban has changed their mandate, their view

:02:36.:02:39.

has changed and their philosophy has changed, because they haven't

:02:39.:02:44.

claimed that they have changed and that they are going to be different.

:02:44.:02:47.

World leaders have meeting this month to discuss Afghanistan's

:02:47.:02:50.

future, but women here believe their needs will once again be

:02:50.:02:55.

ignored. Nell has come to speak to us now.

:02:55.:02:59.

Hi, is it right thaw used to live in Afghanistan? Yes. And you have

:02:59.:03:03.

recently been there to make a documentary about what it is like?

:03:04.:03:10.

Yes. How is the life of girls and women there? Under the Taliban it

:03:10.:03:15.

is really strict and women suffered immensely. My aunty was a teacher

:03:15.:03:21.

and under the Taliban she was forced to do it secretly. My uncle

:03:21.:03:28.

went to a secret school just to learn to read. So when the troops

:03:28.:03:33.

were there did it change people's live? Yes, people were able to play,

:03:33.:03:38.

to go to school or get a job. The worry now is that did they won't be

:03:38.:03:42.

able to do it once the troops leave. What's the biggest risk they've

:03:42.:03:46.

got? It is that they could be punished for doing the very things

:03:46.:03:50.

that they enjoy doing. Otherwise they will be forced to stay at home

:03:50.:03:55.

and be completely ignored. Thank you for that.

:03:55.:03:58.

Moving on. A notebook has been sold at auction today for 250,000. But

:03:58.:04:02.

this ain't no ordinary notebook, oh no. This one made history when it

:04:02.:04:08.

went into space and very nearly stayed there. Intrigued? Watch this.

:04:08.:04:14.

We have commitment and we have lift-off at 2.13... 41 years ago

:04:14.:04:21.

Apollo 13 set off on a mission to the Moon, but two days later an

:04:21.:04:25.

oxygen tank exploded creating a very dangerous situation. It left

:04:25.:04:29.

the astronauts desperately short of water, oxygen and power. They were

:04:29.:04:35.

trapped in space. Houston we have a problem here... The Moon landing

:04:35.:04:40.

was aborted and the race was on to get them back. The crew of three

:04:40.:04:45.

was manned by commander Jim Lovell. With the help of his detailed

:04:45.:04:50.

calculations they head Ford Earth. Four days after takeoff they landed

:04:50.:04:54.

in the sea and were rescued. They were treat like heroes. The

:04:54.:05:00.

notebook had played a vital part in getting the astronauts safely home.

:05:00.:05:03.

That is what you call an historic notebook!

:05:03.:05:06.

Next, another big win for Wayne Rooney, but this one is off the

:05:06.:05:09.

pitch The England man has won the latest round of a multi-million

:05:09.:05:12.

pound legal fight with a company that used to look after him.

:05:12.:05:14.

Proactive wanted 4.3 million from the Manchester United striker,

:05:14.:05:18.

saying he owed it to them. This was the word from Wayne. He said he

:05:18.:05:22.

"never wanted to go to court in the first place. But you just have to

:05:22.:05:27.

fight for what's right in life. That's what I've always done." Very

:05:27.:05:30.

moral there, Wayne. So, there's only another 24 days

:05:30.:05:33.

until lots of you will be getting stuck into your Christmas dinner

:05:33.:05:36.

with all the trimmings. But what's on the menu for our animal friends?

:05:36.:05:46.
:05:46.:05:52.

We sent Leah to Chester Zoo to find out. Crisp vegetables, juicy fruit,

:05:52.:05:57.

freshly-boiled eggs and... Meal worms? This is not just food. This

:05:57.:06:03.

is zoo food. It is meal time here at Chester zoo. I've got my recipe

:06:03.:06:09.

book and it's time to find out what's on the menu. We are just

:06:09.:06:15.

about to feed some red pandas. We had some delicious rather

:06:15.:06:18.

scrumptious panda cakes. To keep it really superhealthy we have some

:06:18.:06:28.
:06:28.:06:31.

These guys get four meal as day, each expertly prepared by the cooks.

:06:31.:06:36.

But some recipes in the book don't take much preparation at all. In

:06:36.:06:41.

the wild, giraffes eat for about 12 hours a day, so I think right now

:06:41.:06:45.

it's time for them to have something to eat. Today's choice is

:06:45.:06:51.

twigs and some branches. The zoo makes sure they get lots of green

:06:51.:06:56.

leaves, even in the winter, to keep them healthy. What proof do you

:06:56.:06:59.

have that it is actually benefiting the animals? The animals themselves

:06:59.:07:04.

tell us that, so if we have got healthy animals, if they are

:07:04.:07:07.

behaving normally, if they are healthy and if they are having

:07:07.:07:11.

babies and reproducing, that's the sign of a good diet. There are

:07:11.:07:16.

7,000 recipes in the book and each animal has its own profile. So if

:07:16.:07:19.

they leave this zoo their new keepers will know exactly what to

:07:19.:07:22.

feed them. Scientists say they may have

:07:22.:07:24.

discovered how toads could predict an earthquake. In 2009, toads

:07:24.:07:27.

disappeared from a pond in L'Aquila, in Italy, just days before a

:07:27.:07:29.
