Happy Friday afternoon. I'm Ricky, here is what's coming up. Stop | :00:13. | :00:20.
killing birds. We meet the school kids trying to save sea birds. The | :00:20. | :00:29.
rubber duck - you don't want a new bathroom - this is Newsround. | :00:29. | :00:35.
First, to a chemical spill that the RSPB is calling one of the worst in | :00:36. | :00:40.
decades. Twice on the south coast of England, sea birds have washed | :00:40. | :00:48.
up on beaches covered in a sticky substance. 2,500 have died. It is a | :00:48. | :00:57.
chemical found in chewing gum to tyres. It is called PIB. | :00:57. | :01:03.
Sea birds - beautiful, agile hunters that we rarely get to see. | :01:03. | :01:07.
Since January thousands have washed up on beaches like this because of | :01:07. | :01:10.
pollution. Thousands of birds out there have suffered as a | :01:10. | :01:15.
consequence of this being in the water. It is very sticky. When it | :01:15. | :01:22.
mixes with sea water it becomes very sticky and it matts the bird's | :01:22. | :01:26.
feather, so they cannot swim. They suffer very quickly. Scientists | :01:26. | :01:31.
here at the University of Plymouth have worked out this could be the | :01:31. | :01:35.
substance causing all the problems. It is a type of PIB. As you can see, | :01:35. | :01:40.
it is very sticky. It is thought this type of PIB is used in ship | :01:41. | :01:46.
engines. It is legal to release it into sea under certain conditions. | :01:46. | :01:50.
The Maritime and Coastguard Agency is investigating where the chemical | :01:50. | :01:55.
has come from, but admits it is unlikely they will be able to find | :01:55. | :02:03.
the ship or ships responsible. Children at this school in Cornwall | :02:03. | :02:06.
are seeing for themselves the dead birds washing up on the beaches | :02:06. | :02:11.
they are playing on. They have started a campaign to do something | :02:11. | :02:16.
about it. We live near the beaches. We don't like to see dead birds. | :02:16. | :02:20.
They haven't done anything to us. Why should we harm them? All these | :02:20. | :02:26.
birds are dying, so we want to change the law to ban PIB. What are | :02:26. | :02:32.
you doing to try and stop this happening? We have written to the | :02:32. | :02:37.
Government, an MP and Prince Charles. We don't have a reply yet | :02:37. | :02:41.
and we feel quite angry. shipping minister has told | :02:41. | :02:51.
:02:51. | :03:03. | ||
These guillemots here are in the final stages of rehabilitation. | :03:03. | :03:07.
Questions remain unanswered about what happened out in the waters. | :03:07. | :03:12.
Thank you. Over on the Newsround website you can see a sea birds rap | :03:12. | :03:16.
the children have done. We will follow that for you to see how | :03:16. | :03:21.
their campaign goes. Are you more like this, or this? Well, a head | :03:21. | :03:25.
teacher from London has people talking about encouraging pupils | :03:25. | :03:29.
not to have best friends and have big groups of friends instead. He | :03:29. | :03:33.
has told a newspaper having just one mate can make other kids feel | :03:33. | :03:43.
:03:43. | :03:54. | ||
left out and upset. On the website, I know I've had one of these in my | :03:54. | :03:59.
baths before. I bet you guys have too. I am not sure you will find a | :03:59. | :04:07.
bath big enough for this! This 16- metre rubber duck was pulled across | :04:07. | :04:11.
Victoria Harbour in Hong Kong. It has been around the world and the | :04:11. | :04:16.
artist wants it to inspire peace and harmony. Bring on the bank | :04:16. | :04:20.
holiday. It is a megaweekend with three days off school. The good | :04:20. | :04:27.
news - most of you will have some sunshine. During this bank holiday | :04:27. | :04:33.
weekend it seems we'll see a big contrast in temperatures. Strong | :04:33. | :04:39.
sunshine in May. Where will it be warmest? Northern areas, | :04:39. | :04:42.
particularly Scotland and Northern Ireland will be breezy with rain at | :04:42. | :04:51. |
