Hello. Welcome to Newsround with Hayley and Ore. We're live, it's | :00:20. | :00:23.
just after five and we've got everything you need to know. | :00:23. | :00:28.
Coming up: We speak to Helen Skelton as she takes her first | :00:28. | :00:33.
steps towards the South Pole. And as the dust settles on | :00:33. | :00:38.
yesterday's gale-force winds, we've got some amazing images. But before | :00:38. | :00:42.
any of that, our top story. 18 years ago teenager Stephen Lawrence | :00:42. | :00:46.
was killed in a racist attack, now two men have been sent to prison | :00:46. | :00:52.
for the murder. Gary Dobson was sentenced to 15 years and David | :00:52. | :00:55.
Norris to 14 years for a crime which the judge called terrible and | :00:55. | :01:00.
evil. Stephen's murder shocked Britain. The case has led to | :01:00. | :01:03.
changes in the law and it's had a huge impact on the way people in | :01:04. | :01:07.
this country think about race. I've been looking back at why it's taken | :01:07. | :01:11.
so long for his family to get justice. In April 1993, Stephen | :01:12. | :01:15.
Lawrence was waiting near a bus stop in London when he was killed | :01:15. | :01:20.
by a gang of white teenagers. He was just 18 when he died. Stephen's | :01:20. | :01:23.
mum and dad, Doreen and Neville, demanded justice, but the police | :01:23. | :01:32.
failed to act quickly. I have one more son and have saved well Hebe | :01:32. | :01:35.
until these killers have been caught? | :01:36. | :01:38.
It was weeks before anyone was arrested, and then there was not | :01:39. | :01:41.
enough evidence to put the suspects on trial. Across Britain people | :01:41. | :01:44.
were getting angry that not enough was being done, and many people | :01:44. | :01:47.
thought it was because Stephen was black. An inquiry into the case was | :01:48. | :01:50.
ordered and it found the officers in charge had made big mistakes. | :01:51. | :01:53.
The report also accused the police force of being racist. Eventually | :01:53. | :01:56.
three men, including Gary Dobson, were put on trial for Stephen's | :01:56. | :02:01.
murder but the case collapsed and no-one was found guilty. Under | :02:01. | :02:04.
British law at that time he couldn't be tried for the same | :02:04. | :02:07.
crime twice. But anger about this helped convince the Government to | :02:07. | :02:14.
change to law in 2005. Then in 2007 there was a breakthrough. Police | :02:14. | :02:18.
used new forensic technology to look again at all the evidence. | :02:18. | :02:21.
They examined clothes belonging to two suspects, Gary Dobson and David | :02:21. | :02:25.
Norris. On them they found tiny traces of Stephen's blood and | :02:25. | :02:35.
fibres from his clothes. The most significant finding was a stain on | :02:35. | :02:41.
the back of the collar. It was a microscopic bloodstain that would | :02:41. | :02:46.
not be apparent to the naked eye. For The change in the law meant | :02:46. | :02:49.
that Gary Dobson could be put on trial again alongside David Norris | :02:49. | :02:54.
and now they've both been jailed. It is the beginning of starting a | :02:54. | :02:57.
new life because we have been in limbo for so long. | :02:57. | :03:00.
It took nearly 20 years for Stephen's family to get justice, | :03:00. | :03:02.
but they hope it's helped change Britain's attitude to racism | :03:02. | :03:06.
forever. Now joining us is John Amaechi, the | :03:06. | :03:08.
former basketball player who now works with young people in | :03:08. | :03:13.
Manchester. It's nearly 20 years since the racist attack on Stephen | :03:13. | :03:16.
and it's always attracted lots of attention - how has it changed | :03:16. | :03:26.
:03:26. | :03:28. | ||
people's attitudes to race and racism in this country? The attack | :03:28. | :03:33.
and this trial has shone a light on how different things are now from | :03:33. | :03:37.
before. People are looking at 20 years ago, the conversations people | :03:37. | :03:44.
were having about this case as if they can't even recognise it. It is | :03:44. | :03:47.
a real positive that we have come so far that we don't recognise our | :03:47. | :03:53.
past. Do you think more needs to be done? Yes, the biggest mistake | :03:53. | :03:58.
would be to look at this trial unsafe the problem is over. There | :03:58. | :04:02.
is still so much going on. Young people in schools know that nearly | :04:02. | :04:07.
every day they will hear comments they should not be said. We have a | :04:07. | :04:11.
responsibility to make sure things keep getting better. If there is | :04:11. | :04:17.
something we can do to help stop racism, what do you think it is? | :04:17. | :04:21.
People can stop bringing assumptions to school with them. We | :04:21. | :04:26.
look at people's skin colour, the way they dress, their hair, and we | :04:26. | :04:31.
imagine we know stuff about them. Look at them like human beings and | :04:31. | :04:41.
:04:41. | :04:41. | ||
it will make the world a better place. | :04:41. | :04:43.
The Antarctic, a frozen desert where temperatures can drop to | :04:43. | :04:47.
minus 50 degrees and icy winds can reach up to 100mph. And, for now, | :04:47. | :04:57.
:04:57. | :05:05. | ||
what Blue Peter's Helen Skelton calls home. The Antarctic, here. It | :05:05. | :05:10.
is so good to hear your voice. What is the weather like in the | :05:10. | :05:15.
Antarctic right now? We have had a couple of days of being stuck in a | :05:15. | :05:20.
tent because of storms, but overall it has been cold with bright blue | :05:20. | :05:27.
skies. The weather has affected the challenge, hasn't it? Yes, because | :05:27. | :05:33.
we haven't been able to make as much progress as we like. We have | :05:33. | :05:37.
got about 20 days to get to the South Pole so the pressure is on. | :05:37. | :05:42.
The challenge was supposed to be 500 miles tracked by three modes of | :05:42. | :05:48.
transport, which sounded hard but it has got even harder, hasn't it? | :05:48. | :05:54.
It has not been windy enough to use the kite, and the snow has been too | :05:54. | :06:00.
soft for the bikes. I am determined to use it. What will help pull you | :06:00. | :06:07.
through 500 miles to the South Pole? If I can raise 10p or 10, | :06:07. | :06:14.
then it has been worth everything. We are right behind you and we | :06:14. | :06:20.
can't wait to see you come home. appreciated. I will do you proud. | :06:20. | :06:27.
She always does. An incredible person, an inspiration. | :06:27. | :06:30.
The television programme and Downton Abbey was popular over | :06:30. | :06:33.
Christmas but have you ever imagined what it would be like to | :06:33. | :06:38.
live in a castle? Meet these children who lived in | :06:39. | :06:44.
Castle Howard near York. It has been named one of the top 10 | :06:44. | :06:49.
mansions in the world. They have been showing us around so look at | :06:49. | :06:57.
the Newsround website for some behind the scenes Peking. Just | :06:57. | :07:02.
before we go, yesterday we reported on the storms that caused chaos | :07:02. | :07:07. |
