Morning, everyone. | 0:00:03 | 0:00:04
Leah here this Tuesday morning, live with Newsround. | 0:00:04 | 0:00:06
Coming up: Jenny's in South Africa with kids who love elephants. | 0:00:06 | 0:00:13
And how elephant poo could help tackle poachers. | 0:00:13 | 0:00:18
First up, countries around the world are meeting in South Africa | 0:00:24 | 0:00:26
to decide how to protect endangered animals like elephants. | 0:00:28 | 0:00:31
Jenny's there this morning. | 0:00:31 | 0:00:33
Hi, Jenny, what have you been finding out this week so far? | 0:00:33 | 0:00:37
Hi, guys, welcome to Johannesburg - one the biggest cities | 0:00:37 | 0:00:40
in South Africa. | 0:00:40 | 0:00:42
Thousands of African elephants are being illegally killed | 0:00:42 | 0:00:44
for their ivory tusks every year. | 0:00:44 | 0:00:47
I've been spending the last week learning about | 0:00:47 | 0:00:51
these amazing creatures. | 0:00:51 | 0:00:52
As part of that, I went to speak to schoolchildren who live close | 0:00:52 | 0:00:55
to nature reserves where elephants live, to see what they think | 0:00:55 | 0:00:58
about elephants, what they feel about them being killed | 0:00:58 | 0:01:00
and to answer your questions about living near to nature's giants. | 0:01:00 | 0:01:06
In Afrikaans, olifant means elephant. | 0:01:06 | 0:01:10
Elephant in one word - amazing. | 0:01:10 | 0:01:13
Brilliant. | 0:01:13 | 0:01:14
Beautiful. | 0:01:14 | 0:01:15
Unique. | 0:01:15 | 0:01:20
These children live in Hoedspruit in South Africa. | 0:01:20 | 0:01:24
Some classes are taken outside, a lot of their lessons | 0:01:24 | 0:01:26
involve learning about animals and even their awards | 0:01:26 | 0:01:30
have a bit of a theme. | 0:01:30 | 0:01:34
Their school is only 20 minutes away from nature reserves | 0:01:34 | 0:01:37
and loads of incredible animals, including elephants, who are a big | 0:01:37 | 0:01:40
part of their lives. | 0:01:40 | 0:01:47
It is not just the children here who are interested | 0:01:47 | 0:01:56
in elephants. | 0:01:56 | 0:01:57
They are popular around the world, including at this | 0:01:57 | 0:02:00
school in the UK who have even named their class after them. | 0:02:00 | 0:02:02
ALL: We love elephants! | 0:02:02 | 0:02:03
And they've got some big questions for the children | 0:02:03 | 0:02:06
living in South Africa. | 0:02:06 | 0:02:07
What's it like living near elephants? | 0:02:07 | 0:02:08
It's nice because you get to see them a lot and you get to | 0:02:08 | 0:02:11
learn about them. | 0:02:11 | 0:02:12
It is just very nice being around them and you can often hear them | 0:02:12 | 0:02:16
communicate with each other. | 0:02:16 | 0:02:17
It is actually quite cool unless they start to wreck | 0:02:17 | 0:02:19
through your gates and stuff. | 0:02:19 | 0:02:21
What are the bad things about living around elephants? | 0:02:21 | 0:02:23
They often rip up the water pipes and we have solar panels and they | 0:02:23 | 0:02:26
often like to stand on the solar panels. | 0:02:26 | 0:02:30
We had a school tour for my class and we were actually charged | 0:02:30 | 0:02:34
by an elephant. | 0:02:34 | 0:02:36
Luckily, the bus was able to get away fast enough. | 0:02:36 | 0:02:39
I don't find that they are really bad because it is not their fault | 0:02:39 | 0:02:43
that they need food, they need water, and want to defend themselves | 0:02:43 | 0:02:46
because they feel like you are threatening them. | 0:02:46 | 0:02:48
How do elephants show their feelings? | 0:02:48 | 0:02:49
It's noises and grumbling but also by their language. | 0:02:49 | 0:02:51
When an elephant is angry or scared its tail will go up like this. | 0:02:51 | 0:03:00
I'm sad and annoyed about elephants and how they are poached. | 0:03:00 | 0:03:04
How does that make you feel? | 0:03:04 | 0:03:06
Mainly disappointed that people would kill the animals for money. | 0:03:06 | 0:03:12
I just hate the fact that they are getting poached. | 0:03:12 | 0:03:15
It annoys me so much. | 0:03:15 | 0:03:18
The poachers, all they really want are their tusks because they use | 0:03:18 | 0:03:22
them to make ivory and stuff, | 0:03:22 | 0:03:23
so you're killing an endangered animal | 0:03:23 | 0:03:26
which is part of the big five for no reason. | 0:03:26 | 0:03:28
It makes me feel sad but angry at the same time. | 0:03:28 | 0:03:31
How would you feel if elephants died out? | 0:03:31 | 0:03:35
It would make me feel sad because in the future other people | 0:03:35 | 0:03:39
wouldn't get to see them. | 0:03:39 | 0:03:43
I think if any animal becomes extinct the world becomes | 0:03:43 | 0:03:45
a worse place. | 0:03:45 | 0:03:47
I think all animals have a role in nature. | 0:03:47 | 0:03:49
I love elephants in general. | 0:03:49 | 0:03:52
I love how important they are to the environment. | 0:03:52 | 0:03:54
I love watching them. | 0:03:54 | 0:03:58
They mean a lot to me because they are just so amazing. | 0:03:58 | 0:04:02
They are really, really brilliant creatures. | 0:04:02 | 0:04:04
I like them because they are very wise and to me they seem like, | 0:04:04 | 0:04:08
I don't know, they seem to know everything. | 0:04:08 | 0:04:14
Thanks, Newsround. | 0:04:14 | 0:04:19
As well as speaking to children, I've been to a nature reserve to try | 0:04:19 | 0:04:22
and track down some elephants myself. | 0:04:22 | 0:04:25
But it wasn't easy. | 0:04:25 | 0:04:26
Luckily, we had ranger David to help us | 0:04:26 | 0:04:28
and he had a pretty gross way of doing it - | 0:04:28 | 0:04:33
by examining their poo. | 0:04:33 | 0:04:36
Don't forget, you should never touch animal poo. | 0:04:36 | 0:04:38
David is an expert and he knows what he's doing. | 0:04:38 | 0:04:41
What is it you can find out about an elephant from the poo? | 0:04:41 | 0:04:44
You can definitely see here is a very good example. | 0:04:44 | 0:04:47
You can see some nice, fresh dung. | 0:04:47 | 0:04:53
You can still see it is nice and moist in the inside | 0:04:53 | 0:04:56
and moist on the outside. | 0:04:56 | 0:04:57
Not slimy. | 0:04:57 | 0:04:58
You can see dung, dried out. | 0:04:58 | 0:05:00
You can always follow the fresh dung and | 0:05:00 | 0:05:02
you know that the elephants are close by or not very far, often. | 0:05:02 | 0:05:05
See you can use them to track them? | 0:05:05 | 0:05:07
Yes, definitely. | 0:05:07 | 0:05:08
You can also see some nice sticks. | 0:05:08 | 0:05:10
Sticks and pieces of grass, tree bark, and that shows | 0:05:10 | 0:05:14
exactly what they were eating. | 0:05:14 | 0:05:15
And you are not afraid to touch it? | 0:05:15 | 0:05:17
No. | 0:05:17 | 0:05:18 | |
Because I'm not going to lie, I'm not very keen. | 0:05:18 | 0:05:20
It's just grass and sticks with a little bit of water in between | 0:05:20 | 0:05:24
and it has got a little bit of a smell but, yeah, | 0:05:24 | 0:05:27
it's not very gross. | 0:05:27 | 0:05:29
There you have it, elephant poo. | 0:05:29 | 0:05:32
Thanks, Jen. | 0:05:32 | 0:05:33
Finally, weather forecasters say the most | 0:05:33 | 0:05:36
powerful hurricane in the Caribbean for almost ten years will reach | 0:05:36 | 0:05:39
Haiti in the next few hours. | 0:05:39 | 0:05:40
It's predicted that Hurricane Matthew will cause winds | 0:05:40 | 0:05:43
of up to 140mph and up to 40 inches of rain. | 0:05:43 | 0:05:50
That's all from me. | 0:05:50 | 0:05:52
Newsround's back at 4:20pm with Naz. | 0:05:52 | 0:05:55
Bye. | 0:05:55 | 0:05:58 |
