Morning, everyone.

0:00:030:00:04

Leah here this Tuesday morning, live with Newsround.

0:00:040:00:06

Coming up: Jenny's in South Africa with kids who love elephants.

0:00:060:00:13

And how elephant poo could help tackle poachers.

0:00:130:00:18

First up, countries around the world are meeting in South Africa

0:00:240:00:26

to decide how to protect endangered animals like elephants.

0:00:280:00:31

Jenny's there this morning.

0:00:310:00:33

Hi, Jenny, what have you been finding out this week so far?

0:00:330:00:37

Hi, guys, welcome to Johannesburg - one the biggest cities

0:00:370:00:40

in South Africa.

0:00:400:00:42

Thousands of African elephants are being illegally killed

0:00:420:00:44

for their ivory tusks every year.

0:00:440:00:47

I've been spending the last week learning about

0:00:470:00:51

these amazing creatures.

0:00:510:00:52

As part of that, I went to speak to schoolchildren who live close

0:00:520:00:55

to nature reserves where elephants live, to see what they think

0:00:550:00:58

about elephants, what they feel about them being killed

0:00:580:01:00

and to answer your questions about living near to nature's giants.

0:01:000:01:06

In Afrikaans, olifant means elephant.

0:01:060:01:10

Elephant in one word - amazing.

0:01:100:01:13

Brilliant.

0:01:130:01:14

Beautiful.

0:01:140:01:15

Unique.

0:01:150:01:20

These children live in Hoedspruit in South Africa.

0:01:200:01:24

Some classes are taken outside, a lot of their lessons

0:01:240:01:26

involve learning about animals and even their awards

0:01:260:01:30

have a bit of a theme.

0:01:300:01:34

Their school is only 20 minutes away from nature reserves

0:01:340:01:37

and loads of incredible animals, including elephants, who are a big

0:01:370:01:40

part of their lives.

0:01:400:01:47

It is not just the children here who are interested

0:01:470:01:56

in elephants.

0:01:560:01:57

They are popular around the world, including at this

0:01:570:02:00

school in the UK who have even named their class after them.

0:02:000:02:02

ALL: We love elephants!

0:02:020:02:03

And they've got some big questions for the children

0:02:030:02:06

living in South Africa.

0:02:060:02:07

What's it like living near elephants?

0:02:070:02:08

It's nice because you get to see them a lot and you get to

0:02:080:02:11

learn about them.

0:02:110:02:12

It is just very nice being around them and you can often hear them

0:02:120:02:16

communicate with each other.

0:02:160:02:17

It is actually quite cool unless they start to wreck

0:02:170:02:19

through your gates and stuff.

0:02:190:02:21

What are the bad things about living around elephants?

0:02:210:02:23

They often rip up the water pipes and we have solar panels and they

0:02:230:02:26

often like to stand on the solar panels.

0:02:260:02:30

We had a school tour for my class and we were actually charged

0:02:300:02:34

by an elephant.

0:02:340:02:36

Luckily, the bus was able to get away fast enough.

0:02:360:02:39

I don't find that they are really bad because it is not their fault

0:02:390:02:43

that they need food, they need water, and want to defend themselves

0:02:430:02:46

because they feel like you are threatening them.

0:02:460:02:48

How do elephants show their feelings?

0:02:480:02:49

It's noises and grumbling but also by their language.

0:02:490:02:51

When an elephant is angry or scared its tail will go up like this.

0:02:510:03:00

I'm sad and annoyed about elephants and how they are poached.

0:03:000:03:04

How does that make you feel?

0:03:040:03:06

Mainly disappointed that people would kill the animals for money.

0:03:060:03:12

I just hate the fact that they are getting poached.

0:03:120:03:15

It annoys me so much.

0:03:150:03:18

The poachers, all they really want are their tusks because they use

0:03:180:03:22

them to make ivory and stuff,

0:03:220:03:23

so you're killing an endangered animal

0:03:230:03:26

which is part of the big five for no reason.

0:03:260:03:28

It makes me feel sad but angry at the same time.

0:03:280:03:31

How would you feel if elephants died out?

0:03:310:03:35

It would make me feel sad because in the future other people

0:03:350:03:39

wouldn't get to see them.

0:03:390:03:43

I think if any animal becomes extinct the world becomes

0:03:430:03:45

a worse place.

0:03:450:03:47

I think all animals have a role in nature.

0:03:470:03:49

I love elephants in general.

0:03:490:03:52

I love how important they are to the environment.

0:03:520:03:54

I love watching them.

0:03:540:03:58

They mean a lot to me because they are just so amazing.

0:03:580:04:02

They are really, really brilliant creatures.

0:04:020:04:04

I like them because they are very wise and to me they seem like,

0:04:040:04:08

I don't know, they seem to know everything.

0:04:080:04:14

Thanks, Newsround.

0:04:140:04:19

As well as speaking to children, I've been to a nature reserve to try

0:04:190:04:22

and track down some elephants myself.

0:04:220:04:25

But it wasn't easy.

0:04:250:04:26

Luckily, we had ranger David to help us

0:04:260:04:28

and he had a pretty gross way of doing it -

0:04:280:04:33

by examining their poo.

0:04:330:04:36

Don't forget, you should never touch animal poo.

0:04:360:04:38

David is an expert and he knows what he's doing.

0:04:380:04:41

What is it you can find out about an elephant from the poo?

0:04:410:04:44

You can definitely see here is a very good example.

0:04:440:04:47

You can see some nice, fresh dung.

0:04:470:04:53

You can still see it is nice and moist in the inside

0:04:530:04:56

and moist on the outside.

0:04:560:04:57

Not slimy.

0:04:570:04:58

You can see dung, dried out.

0:04:580:05:00

You can always follow the fresh dung and

0:05:000:05:02

you know that the elephants are close by or not very far, often.

0:05:020:05:05

See you can use them to track them?

0:05:050:05:07

Yes, definitely.

0:05:070:05:08

You can also see some nice sticks.

0:05:080:05:10

Sticks and pieces of grass, tree bark, and that shows

0:05:100:05:14

exactly what they were eating.

0:05:140:05:15

And you are not afraid to touch it?

0:05:150:05:17

No.

0:05:170:05:18

Because I'm not going to lie, I'm not very keen.

0:05:180:05:20

It's just grass and sticks with a little bit of water in between

0:05:200:05:24

and it has got a little bit of a smell but, yeah,

0:05:240:05:27

it's not very gross.

0:05:270:05:29

There you have it, elephant poo.

0:05:290:05:32

Thanks, Jen.

0:05:320:05:33

Finally, weather forecasters say the most

0:05:330:05:36

powerful hurricane in the Caribbean for almost ten years will reach

0:05:360:05:39

Haiti in the next few hours.

0:05:390:05:40

It's predicted that Hurricane Matthew will cause winds

0:05:400:05:43

of up to 140mph and up to 40 inches of rain.

0:05:430:05:50

That's all from me.

0:05:500:05:52

Newsround's back at 4:20pm with Naz.

0:05:520:05:55

Bye.
