Good afternoon everyone - it's Martin here with Newsround | :00:00. | :00:00.
for you this Tuesday afternoon, and here's what's on the way. | :00:00. | :00:09.
Find out how you count up all the animals in a zoo. | :00:10. | :00:14.
We've heard a lot about the long and dangerous journeys that many | :00:15. | :00:28.
refugee children have been taking to get to Europe. | :00:29. | :00:32.
Many of these children are travelling alone. | :00:33. | :00:35.
Today a group of politicians and charities say that more of them | :00:36. | :00:38.
should be helped to come and live in the UK. | :00:39. | :00:42.
Over the past year we've seen thousands of people | :00:43. | :00:47.
leaving their homes in countries like Syria in the Middle east | :00:48. | :00:51.
where war has destroyed towns and cities. | :00:52. | :00:54.
They've travelled huge distances in search of a more a peaceful | :00:55. | :00:57.
Many of them are children, who have even ended up doing some | :00:58. | :01:03.
Like 11-year-old Safid, who spoke to Newsround last year. | :01:04. | :01:09.
He got separated from his dad as they travelled | :01:10. | :01:12.
It took him a whole year to get to northern France, | :01:13. | :01:17.
There are thousands of other children in the same situation. | :01:18. | :01:23.
The UK Government has already said it will take in. | :01:24. | :01:26.
20,000 Syrian refugees from camps in neighbouring countries | :01:27. | :01:29.
But a group of politicians thinks the government should be helping | :01:30. | :01:36.
children who have already made it to Europe. | :01:37. | :01:44.
And on and what we are saying is that our country, the UK, should | :01:45. | :01:52.
allow 3000 of these children to come and live here in safety. | :01:53. | :01:53.
I've come to this school to find out what some of you think about this? | :01:54. | :01:58.
The UK right now, more or less, is his fool. Countries like Germany | :01:59. | :02:07.
have taken in over 1 million people and we should be able to match that | :02:08. | :02:12.
and help out. The benefits would be they would have a better future, but | :02:13. | :02:17.
the problems would be that there would not be enough room in the | :02:18. | :02:24.
schools. I think politicians should make Syria safer for the children. I | :02:25. | :02:28.
would tell the politicians to care about the world, not just the UK, | :02:29. | :02:32.
because even though they are Prime Minister of the UK they should do it | :02:33. | :02:37.
for the entire country to show that we care. The Government has told | :02:38. | :02:43.
Newsnight there helping three home vulnerable refugee children from | :02:44. | :02:44.
Syria. And they also told us | :02:45. | :02:46.
that they are giving money to create Nasa have confirmed that British | :02:47. | :02:49.
astronaut Tim Peake will be taking part in a space walk next week | :02:50. | :02:53.
on Friday 15th January as part of his mission on board | :02:54. | :02:56.
the International Space Station. It's the start of a brand new year | :02:57. | :02:59.
so lots of places are trying to catch up on those | :03:00. | :03:02.
all important jobs. Today I've been to meet | :03:03. | :03:06.
the team at Chester Zoo, who've got a pretty big | :03:07. | :03:08.
task on their hands. It's a busy job being a zookeeper, | :03:09. | :03:11.
the animals need feeding, But today is especially busy | :03:12. | :03:15.
because every mammal, reptile, bird, fish and bug | :03:16. | :03:21.
is being counted by hand by a team It is a really exciting day every | :03:22. | :03:35.
year. Obviously we see the breaths and the animal coming and going | :03:36. | :03:40.
throughout the year, but today release that today's release at him | :03:41. | :03:44.
because we know that what we got. It is with the exciting but it can be a | :03:45. | :03:46.
challenge as well. It certainly is tricky and it's even | :03:47. | :03:46.
busier this year because of a couple There are now over 15,000 creatures | :03:47. | :03:50.
all great and small at Chester Zoo. Counting the bigger animals | :03:51. | :03:54.
like elephants and rhinos isn't too difficult but how do you count | :03:55. | :03:58.
hundreds of butterflies, It can be difficult and sometimes we | :03:59. | :04:10.
take for those of inclusion help us count them but we sit and count each | :04:11. | :04:13.
one by looking in the enclosure or we can do a senseless, for example, | :04:14. | :04:17.
for the butterflies were recorded butterflies released into the house. | :04:18. | :04:21.
We have a rust -- rough estimate of what we've got and we go back and | :04:22. | :04:25.
confirm everything we've got on paper. It will take it well, so if | :04:26. | :04:34.
might add better crack on. One, two, three, four. One... | :04:35. | :04:40.
More than 100 artists have been busy creating fantastic ice sculptures | :04:41. | :04:42.
in China for an annual festival which opens today. | :04:43. | :04:45.
Thousands are expected to visit the exhibits, | :04:46. | :04:48.
which includes a 51 metre high castle. | :04:49. | :04:52.
That's all from me and the Newsround team this afternoon. | :04:53. | :04:55.
Ayshah will be back tomorrow morning at 7.40am. | :04:56. | :04:58. |
