Hello, you're live with Newsround just after 5.00pm. Taking you | :00:23. | :00:28.
through to the Easter weekend. You've got Leah and Ore keeping you | :00:29. | :00:31.
up to date today. Coming up: There'll be no baby pandas for | :00:32. | :00:34.
Britain this year. And, forget carrying around a phone, now all | :00:34. | :00:38.
you need is a pair of digital glasses. | :00:38. | :00:43.
First, the weather. Britain has been hit with snow and rain in the | :00:43. | :00:47.
past week - but believe it or not the county is also in the middle of | :00:47. | :00:49.
a big water shortage. Twenty million people in England | :00:49. | :00:52.
are being told they aren't allowed to use their hoses because there's | :00:52. | :00:57.
just not enough water around. I've been digging up the details. | :00:58. | :01:00.
Digging! If you live in the north you don't | :01:00. | :01:04.
need me to tell you it's been freezing. This week, loads of snow | :01:04. | :01:09.
has fallen and it's left over 1,000 homes without electricity. Power | :01:09. | :01:13.
cables were brought down by the weather. In the south, though, it's | :01:13. | :01:17.
a totally different story. Believe it or not, the last two- | :01:17. | :01:21.
year period has been one of the driest on record and in some places | :01:21. | :01:23.
it's officially being called a drought. | :01:24. | :01:27.
If you live in these areas, the Government says you have got to be | :01:27. | :01:31.
smarter about how you use your water and that means using a hose | :01:31. | :01:36.
to water the garden, wash your car or even fill up your paddling pool, | :01:36. | :01:42.
is out. Anyone caught could have to pay 1,000 punishment. | :01:42. | :01:46.
How come this is happening when there's been so much rain and snow? | :01:46. | :01:49.
At the moment we have dry conditions in the south. We have | :01:49. | :01:53.
had a quarter less rain than you normally expect. In the north and | :01:53. | :01:56.
west we have had more rain. The reason for that, most of the | :01:56. | :01:59.
weather comes from the west over the Atlantic Ocean, it's very wet, | :01:59. | :02:03.
it's very moist and so if you live on the west you get more rain. But | :02:03. | :02:06.
if you live on the east that air that weather has travelled over | :02:06. | :02:09.
land, so it's drier, therefore you get less rain. | :02:09. | :02:13.
What's got a lot of people angry is the amount of water wasted by | :02:13. | :02:19.
leaking pipes. Around 3 billion litres of water are lost every day, | :02:19. | :02:24.
that's the equivalent of 1,300 Olympic-sized swimming pools. But | :02:24. | :02:28.
water companies say they are working hard to to fix them. Big | :02:28. | :02:32.
sports events have been let off the hosepipe ban. The people organising | :02:32. | :02:35.
the Olympics will be able to water the grass at all the different | :02:35. | :02:41.
venues. But for all you guys living in the areas hit, chances are you | :02:41. | :02:45.
won't be able to use your hose all summer. | :02:45. | :02:49.
OK. Sad news if you're fans of Sweety and Sunshine, as time has | :02:49. | :02:52.
run out for the world's most famous panda duo at Edinburgh Zoo. Female | :02:52. | :02:56.
pandas can only breed for 36 hours a year so the last two days have | :02:56. | :03:00.
been really important. Months of planning went into it and one very | :03:00. | :03:02.
secret weapon, as Joe's been finding out Oh well, maybe next | :03:02. | :03:10.
year. In this box is a panda breeding | :03:11. | :03:14.
secret weapon. The precious cargo has travelled more than 200 miles, | :03:14. | :03:20.
and now it's being taken to the lab for special top secret analysis. So, | :03:20. | :03:24.
this is it. The sample. Yeah. What's inside here? There we go. | :03:24. | :03:33.
Where is it? That's it. OK. Ever since Edinburgh zoo's famous pandas | :03:33. | :03:37.
arrived last year keepers have been preparing for them to breed. But | :03:37. | :03:41.
it's notoriously difficult to get pandas to have babies as they can | :03:41. | :03:45.
only breed for about 36 hours every year. Keepers have been waiting for | :03:45. | :03:49.
them to be ready to get pregnant and the clues to when this will be | :03:49. | :03:53.
are in her we,. That's where scientists at this laboratory come | :03:53. | :03:58.
in. They are animal poo and wee experts and have been examining the | :03:58. | :04:01.
wee for months. How many samples like this have you received from | :04:01. | :04:07.
Scotland? We have had 122. This is just a few of them. It's about a | :04:07. | :04:10.
coke bottle's full which isn't that much. One the samples are tested, | :04:10. | :04:13.
the results are plotted on this graph to predict when the pandas | :04:13. | :04:17.
should be put together. The lines are two different chemicals in the | :04:17. | :04:20.
body and we are looking for when they cross over one another. You | :04:20. | :04:25.
have this pattern here. Breeding pandas in captivity is rare, maybe | :04:25. | :04:28.
one in every ten years, so there's lots of people involved to get it | :04:28. | :04:33.
right. Why does it have to be so precise? Why can't we put them | :04:33. | :04:37.
together? The pandas can be aggressive and we need to put them | :04:37. | :04:44.
in together at the right time. There is always next year. Best of | :04:44. | :04:48.
luck to you. Now to the coolest pair of glasses | :04:48. | :04:50.
on the planet! They look pretty normal right? But that's where | :04:50. | :04:53.
you'd be mistaken. Because these specs can check the weather, access | :04:53. | :04:56.
maps, search the internet, take photos and even start video chats! | :04:56. | :04:59.
You won't find them in the shops yet but the creators, Google, says | :04:59. | :05:06.
users can control the glasses with their voice. | :05:06. | :05:11.
Interesting, cool, isn't it. Yesterday was our big 40th birthday. | :05:11. | :05:14.
It was. To celebrate, we've been looking back at what's happened in | :05:14. | :05:16.
each decade since Newsround started. Today, Hayley revisits the decade | :05:16. | :05:26.
:05:26. | :05:33. | ||
which gave us smartphones, Harry Today I am rewinding the clock back | :05:33. | :05:37.
to the year 200, that's why I am in front of this landmark that was | :05:37. | :05:43.
built specifically to celebrate the new millennium. Our top stories... | :05:43. | :05:46.
This was what Newsround looked like ten years ago, the decade of the | :05:46. | :05:50.
gadget. They changed how we watch TV, listen to music, play games and | :05:50. | :05:54.
kept in touch. Phones went from looking like this, to like this. | :05:55. | :05:59.
And forget having a games console, computer TV and mobile, just one | :05:59. | :06:05.
gadget could do all that and more. As far as films, it was all about | :06:05. | :06:09.
one waving wizard and Newsround was there right from the start. Only | :06:09. | :06:13.
one TV programme, ours, was allowed on to the movie set for a series of | :06:13. | :06:17.
world exclusive interviews. I found out that you could audition by | :06:17. | :06:21.
sending a picture of yourself and some information to Newsround. | :06:21. | :06:25.
Harry Potter hit the cinemas in 2001, the series was soon to become | :06:26. | :06:31.
the most successful in film history. One of the big stories we covered | :06:31. | :06:37.
was the death of the Queen's mum. In April April 2002, at the age of | :06:37. | :06:40.
101 the Queen mum died and the nation went into mourning. She had | :06:40. | :06:45.
lived for more than a century and survived two world wars. When her | :06:45. | :06:50.
husband, King George VI, died in 1952, her daughter Elizabeth became | :06:51. | :06:54.
Queen. Before the funeral Prince Harry and Prince William joined a | :06:54. | :06:57.
procession behind the coffin. Schools around the country joined | :06:57. | :07:01.
in a two-minute silence to show their respects. Not everyone in | :07:01. | :07:04.
Britain agrees about whether the Royal Family is a good thing, but | :07:04. | :07:07.
the death of the Queen Mother united the country. | :07:07. | :07:11.
Not everything that made it on to Newsround this century was quite so | :07:11. | :07:15.
important, though. I will leave you with a taster of some of the | :07:15. | :07:20.
stories that probably didn't make headlines anywhere else. | :07:20. | :07:24.
They've rather unusual rubbish collectors in Sicily. Donkeys. Six | :07:25. | :07:28.
of the animals have replaced trucks there to save money and help the | :07:28. | :07:33.
environment. In other news, a runaway cow has caused chaos in a | :07:33. | :07:38.
German city, she broke out of the farm on went on the rampage, | :07:38. | :07:41.
causing 17,000 worth of damage. Every night this week we will be | :07:41. | :07:45.
looking back at what else has changed since we have been on air. | :07:45. | :07:50.
So tune in on CBBC. Definitely do that. If you miss | :07:50. | :07:53.
Hayley's full report you can check it on the website. While you're | :07:53. | :07:56.
there, check out our guide to why we eat chocolate eggs at Easter. | :07:56. | :08:00. |
