Afternoon everyone. | 0:00:02 | 0:00:03
Leah here with Thursday's Newsrond. | 0:00:03 | 0:00:05
Stick around we've got loads of good stuff on the way including: | 0:00:05 | 0:00:08
The tasty snack elephants are going wild for. | 0:00:08 | 0:00:13
And Newsround's in the US bringing you the latest | 0:00:13 | 0:00:15
in virtual reality gaming. | 0:00:15 | 0:00:20
But first. | 0:00:27 | 0:00:28
They make their way each winter from the Arctic in the North Pole | 0:00:28 | 0:00:28
to parts of northern Europe. | 0:00:31 | 0:00:32
But recent storms here have blown hundreds of little auks | 0:00:32 | 0:00:34
onto the shores of eastern Scotland. | 0:00:34 | 0:00:36
Luckily they're being given a helping hand to get | 0:00:36 | 0:00:38
back on track. | 0:00:38 | 0:00:48
When they're at sea, they're in their element, | 0:00:51 | 0:00:57
but once these tiny birds touch the ground, they're in big trouble. | 0:00:57 | 0:01:00
These birds are designed to be on the sea, | 0:01:00 | 0:01:02
so obviously, they can't walk and run across land, | 0:01:02 | 0:01:04
they can only stand up and move a short distance before | 0:01:04 | 0:01:07
they're exhausted. | 0:01:07 | 0:01:08
So when these birds land in people's gardens or in fields, | 0:01:08 | 0:01:11
that's them stuck. | 0:01:11 | 0:01:12
The team at the Scottish SPCA wildlife centre | 0:01:12 | 0:01:14
in Alloa normally rescue just four or five of these birds in an entire | 0:01:14 | 0:01:17
year, but in the last few days, they have cared | 0:01:17 | 0:01:19
for hundreds of auks. | 0:01:19 | 0:01:20
They are doing their best to feed them up and release them. | 0:01:20 | 0:01:23
He's quite feisty, he's biting, so he looks | 0:01:23 | 0:01:25
really good for getting released again, hopefully. | 0:01:25 | 0:01:27
He is quite strong. | 0:01:27 | 0:01:28
They breed in the Arctic and migrate for the winter to the North Sea | 0:01:28 | 0:01:31
They breed in the Arctic and migrate for the winter to the North Sea off | 0:01:31 | 0:01:35
Scotland, but the strong winds have blown them inland. | 0:01:35 | 0:01:37
The charity say if you do find one, call them to give the birds | 0:01:37 | 0:01:40
and the best chance of survival. | 0:01:40 | 0:01:42
If you think the weather's been a bit grey here in the UK, | 0:01:42 | 0:01:45
take a look at these incredible views from northwest China. | 0:01:45 | 0:01:47
Thick fog swamped Urumqi City almost completely hiding | 0:01:47 | 0:01:49
the 80 metre high buildings. | 0:01:49 | 0:01:50
On the roads people had to be extra careful and lots of flights | 0:01:50 | 0:01:53
had to be cancelled. | 0:01:53 | 0:01:58
Space now and Tim Peake is preparing to become the first ever British | 0:01:58 | 0:02:01
astronaut to do a spacewalk. | 0:02:01 | 0:02:02
Right now he's on the International Space Station orbiting 400 | 0:02:02 | 0:02:05
kilometres above earth but next Friday he'll take those first | 0:02:05 | 0:02:07
nerve-wracking steps outside the craft. | 0:02:07 | 0:02:08
So what does it take to walk in space? | 0:02:08 | 0:02:10
Jenny's been finding out. | 0:02:10 | 0:02:18
The International Space Station, floating in orbit 250 miles | 0:02:18 | 0:02:20
above the Earth. | 0:02:20 | 0:02:24
In just a few days, its hatch will open and two astronauts, | 0:02:24 | 0:02:27
Tim Peake and Nasa's Tim Kopra, will step outside the craft | 0:02:27 | 0:02:29
into nothing but infinite miles of space. | 0:02:29 | 0:02:36
Their mission? | 0:02:36 | 0:02:38
To replace a broken solar unit bolted onto the outside of the ISS. | 0:02:38 | 0:02:41
A simple job? | 0:02:41 | 0:02:43
Absolutely not. | 0:02:43 | 0:02:45
They'll be travelling at 17,500 mph and if that doesn't make things | 0:02:45 | 0:02:47
difficult enough, they'll be wearing 160-kilogram spacesuits. | 0:02:47 | 0:02:52
And even though they're weightless in space, | 0:02:52 | 0:02:54
they're big, bulky and very tricky to work in. | 0:02:54 | 0:03:00
You've got to imagine that they're up there, | 0:03:00 | 0:03:02
orbiting the Earth at 17,000 mph in a tin can, basically, | 0:03:02 | 0:03:04
in the vacuum of space. | 0:03:04 | 0:03:07
And they're all protected within that environment, | 0:03:07 | 0:03:08
but they've got to step outside into that near vacuum of space | 0:03:08 | 0:03:11
and sort of float there, outside the station. | 0:03:11 | 0:03:13
So it is difficult. | 0:03:13 | 0:03:17
It will actually take them a few hours just to get suited up. | 0:03:17 | 0:03:20
They've got to put the special suit on to go outside and then they'll be | 0:03:20 | 0:03:24
out there for about six hours doing the job. | 0:03:24 | 0:03:26
To get them ready for their task, the astronauts will breathe pure | 0:03:26 | 0:03:29
oxygen for two hours before leaving the ISS. | 0:03:29 | 0:03:32
This will get rid of another gas in their bodies, | 0:03:32 | 0:03:35
called nitrogen, that can cause problems when they're | 0:03:35 | 0:03:37
in their spacesuits. | 0:03:37 | 0:03:40
To stop them floating away into the void, they'll be attached | 0:03:40 | 0:03:42
to each other and to the craft by a 26-metre steel line. | 0:03:42 | 0:03:46
Tim's underwater training has prepared him well for the mission | 0:03:46 | 0:03:49
and he's looking forward to the challenge. | 0:03:49 | 0:03:50
He even tweeted about his excitement, saying he was thrilled | 0:03:50 | 0:03:52
to be doing his first ever spacewalk. | 0:03:52 | 0:04:00
If you want to know more about that amazing spacewalk, | 0:04:00 | 0:04:02
get to the website where there's loads of exciting stuff on Tim Peake | 0:04:02 | 0:04:05
and his time at the International Space Station. | 0:04:05 | 0:04:09
On the website you can also learn more about the future of gaming. | 0:04:09 | 0:04:17
Some of the biggest tech companies are at a huge gadget show in | 0:04:17 | 0:04:20
Las Vegas. | 0:04:20 | 0:04:21
Big news this year are virtual reality headsets and Ricky | 0:04:21 | 0:04:24
is at the show checking out all the latest tech offerings | 0:04:24 | 0:04:26

Tomorrow he's taking a look at drones and robots. | 0:04:28 | 0:04:30
Now, we're all working through those holiday leftovers, | 0:04:30 | 0:04:32
but Christmas treats aren't just for humans. | 0:04:32 | 0:04:34
These elephants, have been munching on Christmas trees. | 0:04:34 | 0:04:37
The elephants liked the taste and smell so much, the huge snack | 0:04:37 | 0:04:42
was gobbled up in 15 minutes. | 0:04:42 | 0:04:43
Zookeepers at Berlin's Tierpark say the trees are a nutritious addition | 0:04:43 | 0:04:46
to their usual diet. | 0:04:46 | 0:04:50
That's all from me, Newsround's back tomorrow | 0:04:50 | 0:04:51
morning at 7.40. | 0:04:51 | 0:04:52
Bye for now. | 0:04:52 | 0:04:58 |
