Hi, guys. I'm Leah. He's Ore and you're with Newsround. | :00:28. | :00:31.
We've been busy all day sorting through the day's biggest stories, | :00:31. | :00:33.
and we've lined up some of this for you. | :00:33. | :00:37.
Including my Wild 5 mission to clean up our beaches... | :00:37. | :00:40.
And Harry's big Jamaican jolly looks like fun, but what's he | :00:40. | :00:44.
really doing there? First to the war in Afghanistan and | :00:44. | :00:47.
the news today that six British soldiers have been killed there. | :00:47. | :00:50.
They were on patrol in the south of the country, when their armoured | :00:50. | :00:53.
vehicle was hit by an explosion. All their families have been told. | :00:53. | :00:57.
It brings the number of British troops killed during the war there | :00:57. | :01:00.
to more than 400. British soldiers have been fighting | :01:00. | :01:05.
in Afghanistan since 2001. They're among the international troops in | :01:05. | :01:09.
the country working to keep out a terrorist group called the Taliban. | :01:09. | :01:12.
In recent months the numbers of British troops being killed in the | :01:12. | :01:18.
conflict had slowed down - until last night. | :01:18. | :01:21.
Six soldiers had been on patrol in one of the military's most hi-tech | :01:21. | :01:28.
tanks, a Warrior, when they were hit by a blast. The soldiers were | :01:28. | :01:34.
in a very heavily-armoured vehicle. It's called a Warrior, caterpillar | :01:34. | :01:39.
tracks, weighs 20 tonnes. They went off the highway, standard procedure, | :01:39. | :01:45.
and were moving through a sparsely populated area, and were hit by an | :01:45. | :01:50.
explosion. It must have been huge because it killed everyone inside. | :01:50. | :01:56.
The Warrior is built to be tough. It has stroox it can go offroad to | :01:56. | :02:01.
difficult place and is armed by a cannon as its main weapon. Last | :02:01. | :02:04.
year I went out to Afghanistan to see what life is like for troops | :02:04. | :02:09.
there and the kind of protection they have. Our equipment is amazing, | :02:09. | :02:13.
and the vehicles we have are so well protected now. You could very | :02:13. | :02:17.
easily drive around everywhere and not suffer too much in the way of | :02:17. | :02:20.
casualties. That's why this news has come as such a shock. Many | :02:20. | :02:25.
people have been paying tribute to the dead soldiers. This is a | :02:25. | :02:29.
desperately sad day for our country and desperately sad, of course, for | :02:29. | :02:33.
the families concerned. It is a reminder of the huge price that | :02:33. | :02:37.
we're paying for the work we're doing in Afghanistan. | :02:37. | :02:40.
The soldiers had only been in Afghanistan for less than a month. | :02:40. | :02:44.
All British combat troops are set to withdraw in the next two years, | :02:44. | :02:49.
but today's news is a reminder that the fighting is far from over. | :02:49. | :02:53.
There is lots of info on Afghanistan over on the Newsround | :02:53. | :02:56.
website. You can find out why the war | :02:56. | :03:01.
started in the first place with our guys. | :03:01. | :03:11.
:03:11. | :03:12. | ||
OK. Yesterday he was racing the fastest man in the world and now | :03:12. | :03:15.
Prince Harry's been using his feet to show off his moves in Jamaica. | :03:15. | :03:19.
The Prince was wearing a pair of blue suede shoes and joined in the | :03:19. | :03:20.
dancing at a youth centre in Kingston. | :03:20. | :03:24.
Harry is on an official visit to the country as part of the Queen's | :03:24. | :03:26.
Diamond Jubilee celebrations. I think that dance move is what we | :03:26. | :03:31.
call the bogle. He's not really doing it justice! | :03:31. | :03:34.
Yesterday we told you about a whale that had washed up on a beach in | :03:35. | :03:36.
Skegness and the big mission to remove it. | :03:37. | :03:40.
Sadly, it had died when it appeared on the sand. It's now finally been | :03:40. | :03:42.
removed after being lifted onto a lorry. | :03:42. | :03:49.
Plastic bags, cotton-buds and even a kitchen sink. Not my shopping | :03:49. | :03:53.
list but just some of the junk that washes up on our beaches everyday | :03:53. | :03:57.
across the UK. The problem is so bad over the last eight years beach | :03:57. | :04:00.
litter has increased 135%. So today on Wild 5 coastal I head to the | :04:00. | :04:10.
:04:10. | :04:15. | ||
A seal caught up in fishing nets, a turtle tangled in plastic, and it's | :04:15. | :04:20.
all because of this - tonnes and tonnes of rubbish - not great to | :04:20. | :04:25.
look at, but examples of how our mess is swamping our coastline and | :04:26. | :04:31.
washing up on our beaches. On some beaches around the UK, the Marine | :04:31. | :04:35.
Conservation Society say for every step we take, there's at least two | :04:35. | :04:40.
pieces of litter. There's concerns that some of our best loved marine | :04:40. | :04:43.
wildlife could be under threat because of it. We all like to go to | :04:43. | :04:47.
the beach on holiday. On the beach we might leave a bit of litter | :04:47. | :04:50.
there, so a lot of it does come from the public. It also comes from | :04:50. | :04:55.
shipping, so ropes and nets can be lost at sea, and also from fly- | :04:55. | :05:00.
tipping as well, so people dumping things on the beach like, I don't | :05:00. | :05:05.
know, old tyres and things like that that they shouldn't really be | :05:05. | :05:08.
leaving there. This is why beach pollution makes it on to the Wild 5 | :05:08. | :05:18.
:05:18. | :05:18. | ||
card - plastic litter on beaches has increased 135% since 1994. The | :05:19. | :05:21.
good news is beach pollution is entirely preventable. These guy | :05:21. | :05:27.
from the Marine Conservation Society's Beach Watch Campaign are | :05:27. | :05:31.
making sure litter doesn't stick around here very long. Every month | :05:31. | :05:35.
they pick a beach they're concerned about and head out to clean it up. | :05:35. | :05:40.
And today they've got me as a helping hand. | :05:40. | :05:44.
I mean, the frustrating thing - we have just found this bottle top. We | :05:44. | :05:48.
have found loads of glass. We can do our best to clean this area, but | :05:48. | :05:53.
when the tide comes in, it will bring in a whole heap of new | :05:53. | :05:55.
rubbish, and that's just really lame. | :05:55. | :06:01.
To show you how big the problem is, this is how much rubbish was found | :06:01. | :06:06.
inside the stomach of a beached Minke whale. As you can see, it has | :06:06. | :06:11.
a massive impact. That whale had obviously eaten all of this rubbish | :06:11. | :06:15.
found out at sea. Nobody is saying you shouldn't have fun at the beach, | :06:15. | :06:20.
but the next time you're here, by jumping your junk in one of these, | :06:20. | :06:26.
it goes a long way to protecting our wildlife in our seas and on our | :06:26. | :06:28.
beaches. Thank you very much. What have we | :06:28. | :06:31.
got on tomorrow? We travel to Orkney. We're trying | :06:32. | :06:34.
to find out why harbour seals are declining. | :06:34. | :06:37.
Bosses at Rangers Football Club have been meeting to try and sort | :06:37. | :06:40.
out the Scottish side's money problems. A deal to clear their | :06:40. | :06:43.
debts fell through yesterday and it looks like players will now need to | :06:43. | :06:48.
take huge pay cuts. Some reports say the club's biggest | :06:48. | :06:51.
stars are being asked to lose a massive chunk of their wage. Two | :06:51. | :06:54.
players have already left the club because of it. It's all because | :06:54. | :07:04.
:07:04. | :07:06. | ||
Rangers owes 50 million in tax. Here's one to get jumpy about! | :07:06. | :07:10.
A two-day frog conference kicked off in Cambridgeshire today. | :07:10. | :07:13.
A whole load of experts will try and work out how to cut the number | :07:13. | :07:16.
of frogs and toads killed each year crossing roads. They're looking at | :07:16. | :07:19.
the possibilities of using toad- crossings and toad-tunnels to keep | :07:19. | :07:29.
:07:29. | :07:33. | ||
them safe. Want to keep those toads safe!! A few years ago that might | :07:33. | :07:37.
have been what I would like, but I am trying to cut down on the | :07:37. | :07:39.
calories. Finally, imagine being able to have | :07:39. | :07:43.
a piece of cake whenever you wanted? Cake lovers in America now | :07:43. | :07:46.
can after this cupcake vending machine was installed by the owner | :07:46. | :07:49.
of a bakery in LA. There are now plans for three more | :07:49. | :07:51. |
