Hello, I'm Leah, and welcome to Newsround. | 0:00:14 | 0:00:17
First this afternoon the UK government says it supports | 0:00:17 | 0:00:26
President Donald Trump's decision to fire missiles at Syria. | 0:00:28 | 0:00:30
Last night, America launched an attack on a Syrian military base | 0:00:30 | 0:00:32
because many countries and experts believe Syria used poisonous | 0:00:32 | 0:00:35
weapons, which is against the law, on a town earlier in the week. | 0:00:35 | 0:00:41
The Syrian government and its allies say it didn't. | 0:00:41 | 0:00:43
Now Newsround has been reporting on all the different things that | 0:00:43 | 0:00:46
have been happening in Syria for a long time. | 0:00:46 | 0:00:48
So here's Ricky with how we've come to this point. | 0:00:48 | 0:00:56
OK, so let's take a closer look at what's going on in Syria. | 0:00:56 | 0:01:00
The country is here in the Middle East. | 0:01:00 | 0:01:03
Close to Turkey, Lebanon and Iraq. | 0:01:03 | 0:01:07
The trouble began in 2011 and for six years heavy fighting has | 0:01:07 | 0:01:10
destroyed much of the country. | 0:01:10 | 0:01:14
Well, it's hard to give one clear reason. | 0:01:14 | 0:01:19
But we do know that there are different groups trying | 0:01:19 | 0:01:22
to take control of Syria. | 0:01:22 | 0:01:23
And they're against this man, Syria's President Assad. | 0:01:23 | 0:01:26
Rebel groups have all sorts of different ideas and views | 0:01:26 | 0:01:28
about the way the country should be run. | 0:01:28 | 0:01:31
There is also the group that calls itself Islamic State who are very | 0:01:31 | 0:01:34
extreme and also run parts of Iraq. | 0:01:34 | 0:01:42
Many countries have got involved in Syria's war. | 0:01:42 | 0:01:44
The biggest two are Russia and America. | 0:01:44 | 0:01:47
Russia supports the Syrian government and thinks | 0:01:47 | 0:01:49
President Assad should stay in charge. | 0:01:49 | 0:01:55
The US blames Syria's President for a lot of what's going on. | 0:01:55 | 0:01:58
But they haven't always been clear about what they | 0:01:58 | 0:02:01
want to do about him. | 0:02:01 | 0:02:02
Well, in the last few years many families have been forced | 0:02:02 | 0:02:04
to leave their homes. | 0:02:04 | 0:02:05
Hundreds of thousands of Syrians have died and millions more | 0:02:05 | 0:02:09
have left all together. | 0:02:09 | 0:02:11
This is part of the reason there are so many refugees from the country. | 0:02:11 | 0:02:15
The US President Donald Trump has ordered new attacks on Syria | 0:02:15 | 0:02:19
because he believes that President Assad used | 0:02:19 | 0:02:21
chemical weapons to kill many people in Syria. | 0:02:21 | 0:02:24
For many countries around the world using chemical weapons | 0:02:24 | 0:02:26
is totally unacceptable. | 0:02:26 | 0:02:32
But the Russians have criticised Trump's attacks and said that | 0:02:32 | 0:02:34
President Assad didn't use any chemical weapons. | 0:02:34 | 0:02:37
The UK government say they support America but right now British armed | 0:02:37 | 0:02:40
forces aren't involved. | 0:02:40 | 0:02:44
If you want to know more about what is happening in Syria | 0:02:44 | 0:02:49
there's lots of information in our online guide, | 0:02:49 | 0:02:53
which also explains what chemical weapons are and why there's such | 0:02:53 | 0:02:55
shock and anger when they're used. | 0:02:55 | 0:02:58
And if you're worried by this story or by anything you see in the news, | 0:02:58 | 0:03:01
there's also loads of advice over at Newsround online. | 0:03:01 | 0:03:07
Now, is it ever OK for you to take time off school to go on holiday? | 0:03:07 | 0:03:11
It's a question we've been asking you today after the top court | 0:03:11 | 0:03:14
in the UK ruled that it wasn't. | 0:03:14 | 0:03:22
Loads of you have got in touch with your views about this. | 0:03:22 | 0:03:24
Thanks for all your comments, guys. | 0:03:43 | 0:03:51
And finally, Harry Styles' first ever song without the rest | 0:03:51 | 0:03:53
of One Direction has come out today. | 0:03:53 | 0:03:55
So we asked some of you what you really thought of it. | 0:03:55 | 0:03:57
# It's a sign of the times #. | 0:03:57 | 0:04:00
It wasn't what I expected. | 0:04:00 | 0:04:01
I expected something a bit better. | 0:04:01 | 0:04:02
Sad but lively at the same time. | 0:04:02 | 0:04:04
If I was with my friends I would really listen to it | 0:04:04 | 0:04:07
because it is really slow. | 0:04:07 | 0:04:09
One Direction was more like happy and joyful and it made better songs, | 0:04:09 | 0:04:12
then when they separated, because when they separated they all | 0:04:12 | 0:04:15
started releasing sad songs. | 0:04:15 | 0:04:18
I like it but I feel like his voice goes too high. | 0:04:18 | 0:04:27
I like that he is not part of a group no more, | 0:04:36 | 0:04:39
he is doing it solo by himself. | 0:04:39 | 0:04:41
I would give it two out of five. | 0:04:41 | 0:04:43
Two out of five. | 0:04:43 | 0:04:44
3.5 out of five. | 0:04:44 | 0:04:45
Three out of five. | 0:04:45 | 0:04:46
4.5 out of five. | 0:04:46 | 0:04:47
Four out of five. | 0:04:47 | 0:04:48
One out of five. | 0:04:48 | 0:04:50
Newsround's back in the morning, guys. | 0:04:50 | 0:04:51
Have a great weekend. | 0:04:51 | 0:05:01 |
