Hi, I'm Leah and you're live with Newsround on CBBC. On today's show: | :00:00. | :00:11.
Why this former Strictly Come Dancing champ's making a sporting | :00:12. | :00:15.
comeback. And the pig weigh-in for the tiny | :00:16. | :00:37.
panda. This is Newsround. Next, a US military helicopter has | :00:38. | :00:41.
crashed on the Norfolk coast. It happened last night when the | :00:42. | :00:44.
aircraft was carrying out a low flying training exercise. Emergency | :00:45. | :00:46.
services say four people have been killed and an investigation into | :00:47. | :00:49.
what caused the crash has begun. Accord and has been placed around | :00:50. | :00:52.
the scene. This is ordinary procedure in cases like this. It is | :00:53. | :01:01.
for the public safety. And if anything in the news upsets | :01:02. | :01:05.
you, there's lots of help and advice on our website. | :01:06. | :01:13.
South Sudan is the world's newest country. Just two years old, it was | :01:14. | :01:16.
hoped its independence from Sudan would bring peace to an area that | :01:17. | :01:20.
had endured decades of war. But that's not been the case. For the | :01:21. | :01:23.
past three weeks violence has broken out between the government and rebel | :01:24. | :01:27.
groups, and there are fears the country could descend in to civil | :01:28. | :01:29.
war. South Sudan gained independence in | :01:30. | :01:31.
2011 after a war which lasted decades and killed 1.5 million | :01:32. | :01:33.
people. Today, the men that fought for their country's independents are | :01:34. | :01:38.
now fighting each other. In July, the country's president accused his | :01:39. | :01:44.
deputy of trying to seize power, dividing the country's army into two | :01:45. | :01:49.
sides. Now those sides are fighting to control the oil fields, which are | :01:50. | :01:53.
worth a lot of money. The international community fears the | :01:54. | :01:56.
world's newest country is on the brink of civil war. This is where | :01:57. | :02:01.
the fiercest fighting is taking place. Villages lie empty as people | :02:02. | :02:08.
flee their homes in fear. Estimates say there are about 200,000 | :02:09. | :02:12.
displaced people in the country, who have moved because of the violence. | :02:13. | :02:20.
60% of those are children. Even before the fighting started, South | :02:21. | :02:23.
Sudan had a lot of problems. Although the country has lots of | :02:24. | :02:27.
oil, most people are poor. One in three have no access to drinking | :02:28. | :02:31.
water, and one in every seven children will die before their fifth | :02:32. | :02:37.
birthday. However, there is hope the crisis can be resolved. After weeks | :02:38. | :02:41.
of uncertainty, the two warring sides have begun face-to-face | :02:42. | :02:43.
discussions for the first time and there are hopes the talks will | :02:44. | :02:50.
provide a peaceful solution soon. In America, there's been no let up | :02:51. | :02:54.
in the cold weather. Now all 50 US states are experiencing freezing | :02:55. | :02:56.
temperatures, including New York, Georgia, and Tennessee. It was minus | :02:57. | :03:00.
17 degrees Celsius in the small town of Hell, in Michigan. Weather | :03:01. | :03:03.
experts say they expect things to get better soon with temperatures | :03:04. | :03:06.
starting to rise in the coming days, although in Kentucky an escaped | :03:07. | :03:09.
prisoner turned himself in to get out of the cold! | :03:10. | :03:17.
It is so cold that I can barely feel my fingers. The thermometer is | :03:18. | :03:22.
giving us a reading of 10 Fahrenheit, about -12 Celsius. If | :03:23. | :03:29.
you want to get an idea of how cold it really is, take a look at this. | :03:30. | :03:33.
We poured water on a T-shirt less than five minutes ago, and now it is | :03:34. | :03:39.
completely solid. Sport, and Manchester United | :03:40. | :03:41.
suffered their third defeat in a row for the first time in 14 years last | :03:42. | :03:46.
night. A Ryan Giggs own goal set them on the way to a 2-1 defeat to | :03:47. | :03:50.
Sunderland in the first leg of their Capital One Cup semifinal. Nemanya | :03:51. | :03:53.
Vidic had pulled it back to 1-1, but a controversial penalty for | :03:54. | :03:56.
Sunderland gave them the win and got United boss David Moyes rather | :03:57. | :04:01.
upset. How could the linesman give that? The referee was looking | :04:02. | :04:08.
directly at it. The linesman had to look through the defender to give | :04:09. | :04:13.
the decision. Can't believe it. And he might have won Strictly Come | :04:14. | :04:16.
Dancing during his break from the sport, but gymnast Louis Smith's | :04:17. | :04:19.
announced he's making a comeback for the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow | :04:20. | :04:22.
this summer. The three-time Olympic medallist has decided to put off his | :04:23. | :04:28.
retirement in order to compete. I have never had more than two weeks | :04:29. | :04:33.
of in the sport since the age of four. To have a long time off, it | :04:34. | :04:38.
was nice but now it is time to get back in shape. | :04:39. | :04:40.
And last up, just enough time to show you some pictures of Bao Bao, | :04:41. | :04:44.
the baby panda at the Smithsonian National Zoo in America. Here she is | :04:45. | :04:48.
getting her weight checked by staff at the zoo. They're spending lots of | :04:49. | :04:51.
time with her to make sure she's used to being in contact with humans | :04:52. | :04:55.
and doesn't get scared by them. Bao Bao will make her debut in front of | :04:56. | :04:59.
public at the zoo later this month. That is all from me. The team is | :05:00. | :05:02.
back here later this afternoon. | :05:03. | :05:03. |
