Hi, I'm Ricky. | 0:00:17 | 0:00:18
Coming up on Newsround. | 0:00:18 | 0:00:19
Schools are shut by snow again! | 0:00:19 | 0:00:21
The Japanese volcano
blowing its top. | 0:00:21 | 0:00:22
And we meet some very
curious penguins. | 0:00:22 | 0:00:30
First up, it might be March 8th, | 0:00:33 | 0:00:35
but there's been more snow
today in parts of the UK! | 0:00:35 | 0:00:38
Part of North Wales, Yorkshire,
Lancashire and Merseyside | 0:00:38 | 0:00:39
are just a few of the places
which had to shut schools | 0:00:39 | 0:00:42
because of the snow. | 0:00:42 | 0:00:43
Which only means one thing. | 0:00:43 | 0:00:47
Snow day. | 0:00:47 | 0:00:50
Hi, I'm Aila. | 0:00:50 | 0:00:51
And I'm Ivy. | 0:00:51 | 0:00:52
And we live in Leeds. | 0:00:52 | 0:00:54
Our school is closed today
so we've been sledging! | 0:00:54 | 0:01:02
School sent us a message and it
said school is closed. | 0:01:10 | 0:01:14
We've decided to go
outside and play. | 0:01:14 | 0:01:17
We made a snowman
and had a snow fight. | 0:01:17 | 0:01:25
Thanks for all of those. | 0:01:26 | 0:01:28
Today is International Women's Day -
a day to celebrate the amazing | 0:01:28 | 0:01:30
achievements of women
all over the world. | 0:01:30 | 0:01:32
We spoke to a group of women who've
achieved some incredible | 0:01:32 | 0:01:38
things, to see what advice they had
for young girls growing up today. | 0:01:38 | 0:01:41
Take a look at this. | 0:01:41 | 0:01:43
Hi, Newsround. | 0:01:43 | 0:01:44
Hello everybody there at Newsround. | 0:01:44 | 0:01:45
My advice for all of you young girls
watching Newsround right now is... | 0:01:45 | 0:01:48
For International Women's Day
we spoke to six amazing women. | 0:01:48 | 0:01:54
Millie, Lauren, Anita and Yasmin,
Kimberley and Ellie to see | 0:01:54 | 0:01:56
what they had to say. | 0:01:56 | 0:01:58
Being a girl can be
difficult in so many ways. | 0:01:58 | 0:02:01
I feel like there's one major
challenge that maybe some | 0:02:01 | 0:02:04
of you that are watching Newsround
might have faced and | 0:02:04 | 0:02:06
that is comparison. | 0:02:06 | 0:02:07
You shouldn't compare
yourself to anyone else. | 0:02:07 | 0:02:11
We live in a crazy selfie generation
and there's so much pressure put | 0:02:11 | 0:02:14
on the way that you look and the way
that you present yourself that | 0:02:14 | 0:02:17
sometimes the really good stuff
that's going to make you soar | 0:02:17 | 0:02:20
and make dreams come
true gets overlooked. | 0:02:20 | 0:02:26
So, I'm 17, a year away
from being an adult officially, | 0:02:26 | 0:02:29
and I would give the advice
to my younger self | 0:02:29 | 0:02:31
of just not being scared. | 0:02:31 | 0:02:38
Not mind so much about
what other people say | 0:02:38 | 0:02:40
about you or think about your ideas. | 0:02:40 | 0:02:42
Don't let anyone hold you back. | 0:02:42 | 0:02:43
We are all individuals,
we all have different lives. | 0:02:43 | 0:02:45
I think you have that one life,
you've got to live it and you've | 0:02:45 | 0:02:49
just got to enjoy everything you do. | 0:02:49 | 0:02:52
The way you dress,
the music you listen to, | 0:02:52 | 0:02:54
the things you write about,
the things you read, they're | 0:02:54 | 0:02:56
personal to you and if they're
important | 0:02:56 | 0:02:58
to you, they're important. | 0:02:58 | 0:02:59
Don't worry so much
about fitting in with | 0:02:59 | 0:03:01
everybody else, just stick
to | 0:03:01 | 0:03:02 | |
what you're doing. | 0:03:02 | 0:03:03
You're pretty cool. | 0:03:03 | 0:03:04
You can always do it. | 0:03:04 | 0:03:05
You can do it. | 0:03:05 | 0:03:06
Just do it! | 0:03:06 | 0:03:07
Just keep your eyes on the prize. | 0:03:07 | 0:03:10
Stop caring what other people think. | 0:03:10 | 0:03:13
Happy International Women's Day,
Newsround! | 0:03:13 | 0:03:20
Great advice for everyone. | 0:03:20 | 0:03:23
Next, it's six months
since Hurricane Irma swept | 0:03:23 | 0:03:25
across the Caribbean islands. | 0:03:25 | 0:03:26
It was the worst hurricane
there's ever been. | 0:03:26 | 0:03:27
BBC reporter Paul Blake is visiting
the British Virgin Islands to find | 0:03:27 | 0:03:30
out how the area's recovering. | 0:03:30 | 0:03:32
Hey, Newsround. | 0:03:32 | 0:03:34
Over the last six months
people here in the British | 0:03:34 | 0:03:42
Virgin Islands have been busy
rebuilding and cleaning up after | 0:03:44 | 0:03:46
Hurricane Irma. | 0:03:46 | 0:03:47
The hurricane spread a lot of debris
and rubbish all across the | 0:03:47 | 0:03:51
islands, bits of people's houses,
their boats, their cars. | 0:03:51 | 0:03:53
And workers have been
busy collecting it and | 0:03:53 | 0:03:56
moving it to a dump
away from other people. | 0:03:56 | 0:03:59
But a lot of houses and offices
are still heavily damaged | 0:03:59 | 0:04:01
and the builders are working every
day to try to repair them. | 0:04:01 | 0:04:04
Meanwhile all the schoolkids
are back in class, | 0:04:04 | 0:04:06
but many are attending schools that
are not their own because their | 0:04:06 | 0:04:09
classrooms are still damaged. | 0:04:09 | 0:04:10
A lot of people here
hope the workers can | 0:04:10 | 0:04:13
begin to repair some
of the school buildings soon. | 0:04:13 | 0:04:15
A lot of progress has been made
in the British Virgin Islands, | 0:04:15 | 0:04:18
but there is still
a lot of work to do. | 0:04:18 | 0:04:20
The next hurricane season begins in
less than three months, and people | 0:04:20 | 0:04:23
here say they want to be as prepared
as possible for the next storm. | 0:04:23 | 0:04:27
Now it's not often you see a volcano
really blow its top. | 0:04:27 | 0:04:29
But check this out! | 0:04:29 | 0:04:32
These explosive eruptions are coming
from Mount Shinmoedake | 0:04:32 | 0:04:34
in southwestern Japan. | 0:04:34 | 0:04:36
It's the volcano's first major
eruption in seven years. | 0:04:36 | 0:04:41
Incredible! | 0:04:41 | 0:04:47
And check out these nosey
penguins in Antarctica. | 0:04:47 | 0:04:49
The camera was left
on the ice by an explorer | 0:04:49 | 0:04:51
who was part of an expedition team. | 0:04:51 | 0:04:53
And the penguins just
couldn't help themselves - | 0:04:53 | 0:04:55
posing for a bit of a selfie
down the lens. | 0:04:55 | 0:04:57
Look at them
having a good old nosey! | 0:04:57 | 0:04:59
That's it from us. | 0:04:59 | 0:05:01 |
