Lots of people have had to leave their homes to sleep in schools

Lots of volunteers are helping to cook,

:00:47.:00:49.

Our reporter Nazia's been to one of those special centres.

:00:50.:00:53.

I'm at the Greystone Community Centre in Carlisle where lots

:00:54.:00:58.

of people have been coming together, donating towels, clothes,

:00:59.:01:01.

Hundreds of families have been here overnight.

:01:02.:01:06.

Gareth is here from the community centre.

:01:07.:01:08.

What has it been like over the past few days?

:01:09.:01:11.

We opened late on Friday night and people have been coming ever

:01:12.:01:14.

Children have been bringing their own toys

:01:15.:01:19.

for other children to play with, families have been been bringing

:01:20.:01:22.

It has been a tremendous community effort.

:01:23.:01:25.

The water has just went over the radiators,

:01:26.:01:33.

it has been making the couches float and we had all of the tables

:01:34.:01:39.

What is it like to see all this here?

:01:40.:01:47.

It's just really satisfying that people are actually helping us and

:01:48.:01:50.

In the kitchen, if you take a look over here, lots of warm food being

:01:51.:02:03.

A local company has just called to say they're going give free pizza

:02:04.:02:08.

Take a look at this, the most important thing - lots of cake!

:02:09.:02:13.

I've been trying to help my brother because he's been flooded

:02:14.:02:17.

out and he had to get wellies so we are able to help him.

:02:18.:02:23.

Your house is OK, but you're telling me your friends'

:02:24.:02:26.

It's really devastating because they've had to leave most

:02:27.:02:33.

How nice is it to come here to help out?

:02:34.:02:38.

It's really nice because everyone is trying their hardest to help

:02:39.:02:41.

other people, even if they haven't got flooded, they're trying to

:02:42.:02:44.

help people that have, trying to keep them safe and everything.

:02:45.:02:50.

But with more flooding expected in some areas later,

:02:51.:02:53.

some families who have stayed in their homes are trying to

:02:54.:02:56.

The BBC's Fiona Trott is in one street in Carlisle in Cumbria.

:02:57.:03:10.

More than 1400 properties without power. Imagine spending the night

:03:11.:03:16.

here in this street with no electricity, no heat, but that is

:03:17.:03:19.

out there what around half the residents here have done. They have

:03:20.:03:23.

decided to stay, but at least when they walk up this morning, they are

:03:24.:03:28.

waking up to the floodwater going away and the way people were talking

:03:29.:03:32.

last night, you get the impression they want to start some kind of

:03:33.:03:36.

clean-up operation today. One house has already started doing that and

:03:37.:03:41.

have pumped 5000 litres of floodwater and raw sewage.

Palace took the lead but he saved a point with a late strike.

:03:53.:03:57.

:03:58.:03:59.

Well, one animal lover called Charlie got a big surprise

:04:00.:04:01.

for Christmas when his mum found a lizard in the christmas vegetables

:04:02.:04:04.

The RSPCA said they couldn't pick it up on Christmas Day,

:04:05.:04:08.

but when I heard them say they couldn't pick it up I thought they

:04:09.:04:12.

They said that if we got the right stuff and the right crickets

:04:13.:04:16.
